Tightening ProcedureTo obtain the target load of 85% compression ofmaximum deflection, perform the following:

Tighten the packing flange nuts alternately andevenly, keeping the packing flange parallel with thevalve flange, until the Belleville springs arecompressed 100% (or completely flat), as detectedby a rapid increase in nut torque. Refer to theinstruction manual for ENVIRO-SEAL packingsystems for sliding stem valves if you need furtherassistance.

For graphite ULF packing, loosen each packingflange nut 1/4 turn (90 degrees rotation).

The ‘‘target load’’ of 85% compression has nowbeen reached.

1. The “springs flat” procedure described above isthe preferred method of adjusting ENVIRO-SEALGraphite ULF packing. However, the torque valuesin table 1 can also be used as a guideline for 85%spring compression. These values are based ongenerous lubrication of the packing studs and nutswith Never-Seez lubricant. Loosening of the packingflange nuts is not required when these torques areused.

2. Refer to the appropriate valve and actuatorinstruction manuals when connecting the valve tothe actuator. Under normal conditions, the packingnuts should not require re-tightening.

Design EUD, EUT-2, EWD, and EWT-2 Valves—Form 5329, September 1993

Inverted Globe Valve Applications(Actuator below valve)Due to space restrictions in your application, youmay be required to mount the valve/actuatorassembly in an inverted orientation, with the actuatorpositioned below the valve. If so, the followingprocedures will help you with disassembly andassembly techniques.

WARNING

With the valve/actuator upside down, components may drop duringdisassembly or assembly. Be carefulnot to position yourself below thevalve in the path of falling parts.

To avoid personal injury or propertydamage caused by componentsdropping, follow the instructions onthis errata sheet.

As the bonnet/plug/cage is loweredfrom the valve body, the center ofgravity will be above the lifting points.Take care to prevent the assemblyfrom tipping over as it is lowered.Either leave the actuator attached tothe plug and bonnet, attach straps tothe stem, or provide other means toprevent tipping.

Disassembly1. Provide adequate support to the actuator whileremoving it from the bonnet.

2. Provide adequate support to the bonnet whileremoving the bonnet nuts.

3. Be aware that the bonnet/plug/cage may tip overas they are lowered from the valve body. Makeprovision to prevent tipping.

4. Be aware that the cage and seat ring may notcome out with the bonnet and plug/stem assembly. Ifthis occurs, make provision to support these parts,as they may fall out unexpectedly.

Assembly1. Start this assembly procedure with the plug/stemassembly already installed in the bonnet.

2. Put the gaskets and cage onto the bonnet andplug.

3. Place the seat ring with the seat ring gasket ontothe cage, if applicable with the valve design.

4. Raise this bonnet/plug/cage assembly up into thevalve body. Make provision to prevent tipping ofthese parts as they are being raised into the valvebody.

5. Torque the bonnet nuts.

6. Mount the actuator.

Additional Specifications

For specifications such as materials, port diame-ters, valve plug travels, yoke boss diameters, andstem diameters, refer to the Parts List

1. The pressure or temperature limits in this manual and any applicable standard limitations should not be exceeded.2. For temperatures above 450F (232C), a buttwelding-end CF8M (316 stainless steel) valve body with a Class 600 pressure/temperature rating must be derated; contact your FisherControls sales office or sales representative for details. Since ANSI standards do not allow use of intermediate ratings for flanged valve bodies, a Class 600 flanged-end CF8M valvebody with B7 bolting must be limited either to 450F (232C) or to inlet pressures consistent with Class 300 ratings.3. There are two different Class 900 8 x 6 in. valve bodies, one for use only with Cavitrol III cages and the other for use with all other constructions. A Class 900 valve with Cavitrol IIIcage can take full Class 900 pressure drops. For information on other 8 x 6 in. constructions that can take full Class 900 pressure drops, contact your Fisher Controls sales office orsales representative. All other trim constructions are limited to Class 600 pressure/temperature limits even though installed in a Class 900 valve.

Refer to separate manuals for instructions coveringthe actuator and accessories.

Only persons qualified through training or experienceshould install, operate, and maintain these valves. Ifyou have any questions about these instructions, con-tact your Fisher Controls sales office or sales repre-sentative before proceeding.

DescriptionThese single-port globe-style valves have cage guid-ing, clamped seat rings, and push-down-to-close valveplug action. Valve configurations are as follows:

Design EWD: Balanced valve plug with metal-to-met-al seating for all general applications over a widerange of pressure drops and temperatures.

C-seal trim is available for Design EWD valves, class300 and 600, in sizes 6x4x2-1/2, 6x4, 8x4, 8x6, 12x6,10x8, and 12x8.

With C-seal trim, a balanced valve can achieve high-temperature, Class V shutoff. Because the C-seal plugseal is formed from metal (N07718 nickel alloy, Incon-el 718) rather than an elastomer, a valve equippedwith the C-seal trim can be applied in processes with afluid temperature of up to 1100F (593C), providedother material limits are not exceeded.

Design EWS: Unbalanced valve plug with metal-to-metal or optional metal-to-PTFE seating for all generalapplications requiring better shutoff capabilities thancan be obtained with the Design EWD valve.

Design EWT: Balanced valve plug with either metal-to-PTFE seating (standard for all except Cavitrol IIIcages) for stringent shutoff requirements or metal-to-metal seating (standard for Cavitrol III cages, optionalfor all others) for higher temperatures.

SpecificationsTypical specifications for these valves are shown intable 1.

WARNING

Personal injury or equipment damagecaused by sudden release of pressureor bursting of parts may result if thevalve assembly is installed where ser-vice conditions could exceed the limitsgiven in table 1 or on the appropriatenameplates. To avoid such injury ordamage, provide a relief valve for over-pressure protection as required by gov-ernment or accepted industry codes andgood engineering practices.

CAUTION

When ordered, the valve configurationand construction materials were se-lected to meet particular pressure, tem-perature, pressure drop and controlledfluid conditions. Since some body/trim

material combinations are limited intheir pressure drop and temperatureranges, do not apply any other condi-tions to the valve without first contact-ing your Fisher Controls sales office orsales representative.

If hoisting the valve, use a nylon sling toprotect the surfaces. Carefully positionthe sling to prevent damage to the ac-tuator tubing and any accessories. Also, take care to prevent people from beinginjured in case the hoist or rigging slipsunexpectedly. Refer to table 4 for valveassembly weights. Be sure to use ade-quately sized hoists and chains orslings to handle the valve.

1. Before installing the valve, inspect the valve bodycavity and associated equipment for any damage andany foreign material.

2. Make certain the valve body interior is clean, thatpipelines are free of foreign material, and that thevalve is oriented so that pipeline flow is in the samedirection as the arrow on the side of the valve.

3. Install the control valve assembly in any orientationunless limited by seismic criteria. However, the normalmethod is with the actuator vertical above the valve.Other positions may result in uneven valve plug andcage wear and in improper operation. With somevalves, the actuator may also need to be supportedwhen it is not vertical. For more information, consultyour Fisher Controls sales office or sales representa-tive.

Note

If installing a valve with small internalflow passages, such as with WhisperTrim or Cavitrol cages, consider instal-ling an upstream strainer to prevent thelodging of particles in these passages. This is especially important if the pipe-line cannot be thoroughly cleaned or ifthe flowing medium is not clean.

4. Use accepted piping and welding practices wheninstalling the valve in the line. For flanged valve bo-dies, use a suitable gasket between the valve bodyand pipeline flanges.

Note

Depending on valve body materialsused, post weld heat treating may berequired. If so, damage to internal elas-tomeric and plastic parts, as well as in-ternal metal parts is possible. Shrink-fitpieces and threaded connections mayalso loosen. In general, if post weld heattreating is to be performed, remove alltrim parts. Contact your Fisher Controlssales office or sales representative foradditional information.

5. With a leak-off bonnet construction, remove thepipe plugs (keys 14 and 16, figure 20) from the bonnetto hook up the leak-off piping. If continuous operationis required during inspection or maintenance, install athree-valve bypass around the control valve assembly.

6. If the actuator and valve are shipped separately, refer to the actuator mounting procedure in the ap-propriate actuator instruction manual.

WARNING

Personal injury could result from pack-ing leakage. Valve packing was tight-ened before shipment; however, thepacking might require some readjust-ment to meet specific service condi-tions.

Valves with ENVIRO-SEALlive-loaded packing orHIGH-SEAL live-loaded packing will not require thisinitial re-adjustment. See the Fisher Controls instruc-tion manuals, ENVIRO-SEAL Packing System for Slid-ing-Stem Valves or HIGH-SEAL Live-Loaded PackingSystem (as appropriate), for packing instructions. Ifyou wish to convert your present packing arrangementto ENVIRO-SEAL packing, refer to the retrofit kitslisted in the parts kit sub-section near the end of thismanual.

Valve parts are subject to normal wear and must beinspected and replaced as necessary. Inspection andmaintenance frequency depends on the severity ofservice conditions. This section includes instructionsfor packing lubrication, packing maintenance, trimmaintenance, lapping metal seats, and ENVIRO-SEALbellows seal bonnet replacement. All maintenance op-erations may be performed with the valve in the line.

WARNING

Avoid personal injury or property dam-age from sudden release of processpressure. Before performing any mainte-nance operations:

Disconnect any operating lines pro-viding air pressure, electric power, or acontrol signal to the actuator. Be surethe actuator cannot suddenly open orclose the valve.

Use bypass valves or completelyshut off the process to isolate the valve

from process pressure. Relieve processpressure on both sides of the valve.Drain the process media from bothsides of the valve.

Vent the pneumatic actuator load-ing pressure and relieve any actuatorspring precompression.

Use lock-out procedures to be surethat the above measures stay in effectwhile you work on the equipment.

Note

Whenever a gasket seal is disturbed byremoving or shifting gasketed parts, install a new gasket upon reassembly. This is necessary to ensure a good gas-ket seal because the used gasket maynot seal properly.

Because of the care Fisher Controls takes in meetingall manufacturing requirements (heat treating, dimen-sional tolerances, etc.), use only replacement partsmanufactured or furnished by Fisher Controls.

Packing Lubrication

Note

ENVIRO-SEAL or HIGH-SEAL packingdoes not require lubrication.

If a lubricator or lubricator/isolating valve (figure 2) isprovided for PTFE/composition or other packings thatrequire lubrication, it will be installed in place of thepipe plug (key 14, figure 20). Use a good quality sili-con-base lubricant. Do not lubricate packing used in

oxygen service or in processes with temperatures over500F (260C). To operate the lubricator, simply turnthe cap screw clockwise to force the lubricant into thepacking box. The lubricator/isolating valve operatesthe same way, except open the isolating valve beforeturning the cap screw and then close the isolatingvalve after lubrication is completed.

Packing Maintenance

Note

For valves with ENVIRO-SEAL live-loaded packing, see the Fisher Controlsinstruction manual, ENVIRO-SEAL Pack-ing System for Sliding-Stem Valves,Form 5306, for packing instructions. Forvalves with HIGH-SEAL live-loadedpacking, see the Fisher Controlsinstruction manual, HIGH-SEAL Live-Loaded Packing System , Form 5263, forpacking instructions.

Key numbers refer to figure 3 for PTFE V-ring packingand to figure 4 for PTFE/composition packing, unlessotherwise indicated.

For spring-loaded single PTFE V-ring packing, thespring (key 8, figure 3) maintains a sealing force onthe packing. If leakage is noted around the packingfollower (key 13, figure 3), check to be sure the shoul-der on the packing follower is touching the bonnet. Ifthe shoulder is not touching the bonnet, tighten thepacking flange nuts (key 5, figure 20) until the shoul-der is against the bonnet. If leakage cannot bestopped in this manner, go to the Replacing Packingprocedure.

If there is undesirable packing leakage with other thanspring-loaded packing, first try to limit the leakage andestablish a stem seal by tightening the packing flangenuts.

If the packing is relatively new and tight on the stemand if tightening the packing flange nuts does not stopthe leakage, the valve stem may be worn or nicked sothat a seal cannot be made. The surface finish of anew valve stem is critical for making a good packingseal. If the leakage comes from the outside diameterof the packing, the leakage may be caused by nicks orscratches around the packing box wall. If performingany of the following procedures, inspect the valvestem and packing box wall for nicks and scratches.

Replacing Packing1. Isolate the control valve from the line pressure, re-lease pressure from both sides of the valve, and drainthe process media from both sides of the valve. If us-ing a power actuator, also shut-off all pressure lines tothe power actuator and release all pressure from the

WARNING

To avoid personal injury or propertydamage caused by uncontrolled move-ment of the bonnet, loosen the bonnetby following the instructions in the nextstep. Do not remove a stuck bonnet bypulling on it with equipment that canstretch or store energy in any othermanner. The sudden release of storedenergy can cause uncontrolled move-ment of the bonnet.

Note

The following step also provides addi-tional assurance that the valve bodyfluid pressure has been relieved.

4. Hex nuts (key 16, figure 21, 22 or 23) attach thebonnet (key 1, figure 20) to the valve body (key 1, fig-ure 21, 22 or 23). Loosen these nuts approximately1/8 inch (3 mm). Then loosen the body-to-bonnet gas-keted joint by either rocking the bonnet or prying be-tween the bonnet and valve body. Work the prying toolaround the bonnet until the bonnet loosens. If no fluidleaks from the joint, proceed with bonnet removal asdescribed in the following steps.

CAUTION

To avoid damage to the seating surfacecaused by the valve plug and stem as-sembly dropping from the bonnet afterbeing lifted part way out, temporarily

install a valve stem locknut on the valvestem when lifting the bonnet. The lock-nut prevents the valve plug and stemassembly from dropping out of the bonnet.

5. Completely remove the hex nuts (key 16) and care-fully lift the bonnet off the valve body.

6. Remove the locknut and separate the valve plugand stem from the bonnet. Set the parts on a protec-tive surface to prevent damage to gasket or seatingsurfaces.

7. Remove the bonnet gasket (key 10, figure 21through 23), and cover the opening in the valve bodyto protect the gasket surface and prevent foreign ma-terial from getting into the valve body cavity.

8. Remove the packing flange nuts, packing flange, upper wiper, and packing follower (keys 5, 3, 12, and13, figure 20). Carefully push out all the remainingpacking parts from the valve side of the bonnet usinga rounded rod or other tool that will not scratch the

packing box wall. Clean the packing box and the metalpacking parts.

9. Inspect the valve stem threads and packing boxsurfaces for any sharp edges that might cut the pack-ing. Scratches or burrs could cause packing box leak-age or damage to the new packing. If the surfacecondition cannot be improved by light sanding, replacethe damaged parts by following the appropriate stepsin the Trim Maintenance procedure.

10. Remove the covering protecting the valve cavityand install a new bonnet gasket (key 10, figure 21through 23), making sure the gasket seating surfacesare clean and smooth. Place the stem and valve pluginto the valve body and slide the bonnet over the stemand onto the stud bolts (key 15, figure 21, 22, or 23).

Note

Proper performance of the tighteningprocedures in step 11 compresses thespiral wound gasket (key 12, figure 21through 22) or load ring (key 26, figure23) enough to both load and seal theseat ring gasket (key 13, figure 21, 22 or23). It also compresses the outer edgeof the bonnet gasket (key 10, figure 21through 23) enough to seal the body-to-bonnet joint.

The prelubricated stud bolt nuts (key 16,figure 21, 22 or 23), referred to in step11, can be identified by a black filmcoating on the nut threads.

The proper bolting procedures in step11 include—but are not limited to—en-suring that bolting threads are clean, and evenly tightening the nuts onto thestuds in a criss-cross pattern. Becauseof the bolt-up characteristics of spiralwound gaskets, tightening one nut mayloosen an adjacent nut. Repeat thecriss-cross tightening pattern severaltimes until each nut is tight and thebody-to-bonnet seal is made. When theoperating temperature has beenreached, perform this torquing proce-dure once again.

11. Install bolting, using proper bolting proceduresduring tightening so that the body-to-bonnet joint willwithstand test pressures and application service condi-tions. Use the bolt torques in table 4 as guidelines.

12. Install new packing and the metal packing boxparts according to the appropriate arrangement in fig-ure 3, 4, or 5. Place a smooth-edged pipe over thevalve stem and gently tap each soft packing part intothe packing box.

13. Slide the packing follower, upper wiper, and pack-ing flange (keys 13, 12, and 3, figure 20) into position.Lubricate the packing flange studs (key 4, figure 20)and the faces of the packing flange nuts (key 5, figure20). Install the packing flange nuts.

14. For spring-loaded PTFE V-ring packing , tight-en the packing flange nuts until the shoulder on thepacking follower (key 13, figure 20) contacts the bon-net.

For graphite packing, tighten the packing flange nutsto the maximum recommended torque shown in table6. Then, loosen the packing flange nuts, and retightenthem to the recommended minimum torque shown intable 6.

For ENVIRO-SEAL or HIGH-SEAL live-loadedpacking, refer to the note at the beginning of thePacking Maintenance section.

For other packing types, tighten the packing flangenuts alternately in small equal increments until one ofthe nuts reaches the minimum recommended torqueshown in table. Then, tighten the remaining flangenuts until the packing flange is level and at a 90–de-gree angle to the valve stem.

15. Mount the actuator on the valve assembly, andreconnect the actuator and valve stem according tothe procedure in the appropriate actuator instructionmanual.

Trim MaintenanceFor C-seal construction, see the appropriate C-sealsections in this instruction manual.

Except where indicated, key numbers in this sectionare referenced in figure 21 for Design EWD construc-tions, figure 21 for restricted trim detail, figure 22 forDesign EWS constructions, and figure 23 for DesignEWT constructions. Refer to figures 25 and 26 forCavitrol III constructions and to figure 26 for WhisperTrim III.

Trim Removal1. Remove the actuator and the bonnet according tosteps 1 through 5 of the Replacing Packing procedure.

CAUTION

When lifting the valve plug stem (key 7)and attached valve plug (key 2) out ofthe valve, be certain that the cage (key3) remains in the valve (key 1). This willprevent cage damage that might becaused by the cage dropping back intothe valve after being lifted part way out.

Use care to avoid damaging gasket seal-ing surfaces.

Each graphite piston ring (key 6) in aDesign EWD valve is brittle and in twopieces. Use care to avoid damage to thepiston ring(s) caused by dropping orrough handling.

The surface finish of the valve stem (key7) is critical for making a good packingseal. The inside surface of the cage orcage/baffle assembly (key 3) or cage re-tainer (key 31) is critical for smooth op-eration of the valve plug and for makinga seal with the piston ring (key 6) or sealring (key 28). The seating surfaces ofthe valve plug (key 2) and the seat ring(key 9) on a metal-seat construction arecritical for tight shutoff. Assume allthese parts are in good condition andprotect them accordingly, unless in-spection reveals otherwise.

2. Remove the packing flange nuts, packing flange, upper wiper, and packing follower (keys 5, 3, 23, and24, figure 20). Carefully push out all the remainingpacking parts from the valve side of the bonnet usinga rounded rod or other tool that will not scratch thepacking box wall. Clean the packing box and the metalpacking parts.

3. Inspect the valve stem threads and packing boxsurfaces for any sharp edges which might cut thepacking. Scratches or burrs could cause packing boxleakage or damage to the new packing. If the surfacecondition cannot be improved by light sanding, replacethe damaged parts.

4. Remove the load ring (key 26) from a 10 x 8 or 12x 8-inch valve or the cage adaptor (key 4) from anyrestricted-trim valve through 8 x 4 inches, and wrap itfor protection.

5. On a 4-inch (102 mm) travel valve with WhisperTrim I cage or on any 8 x 6 or 12 x 6-inch valve withWhisper Trim III cage, remove the bonnet spacer (key32) and bonnet gasket (key 10) on top of the spacer. Then on any construction with a cage retainer (key31), remove the cage retainer and its associated gas-kets. A Whisper Trim III cage retainer has two 3/8-inch16 NPT tappings in which screws or bolts can beinstalled for lifting.

6. Remove the cage or cage/baffle assembly (key 3)and the associated gaskets (keys 10, 11, and 12).With full-capacity constructions that have FGM gasketsets, a shim (key 53) is used instead of the cage gas-ket (key 11). If the cage is stuck in the valve, use arubber mallet to strike the exposed portion of the cageat several points around its circumference.

Lapping Metal Seats

CAUTION

To avoid damaging the ENVIRO-SEALbellows seal bonnet assembly, do notattempt to lap the metal seating sur-faces. The design of the assembly pre-vents rotation of the stem and anyforced rotation will damage internalcomponents of the ENVIRO-SEAL bel-lows seal bonnet.

With metal seat constructions, seating surfaces of thevalve plug and seat ring (keys 2 and 9, figures 23through 25) can be lapped for improved shutoff. (Deepnicks should be machined out rather than ground out.)Use a good quality lapping compound of a mixture of280 to 600-grit. Apply the compound to the bottom ofthe valve plug.

Assemble the valve to the extent that the cage (andcage retainer and bonnet spacer, if used) is in placeand the bonnet is bolted to the valve. A simple handlecan be made from a piece of strap iron locked to thevalve plug stem with nuts. Rotate the handle alternate-ly in each direction to lap the seats. After lapping, re-move the bonnet, and clean the seat surfaces. Com-pletely assemble the valve as described in the TrimReplacement portion of the Trim Maintenance section, and test the valve for shutoff. Repeat the lapping pro-cedure if leakage is still excessive.

Valve Plug MaintenanceExcept where indicated, key numbers in this sectionare referenced in figure21 for Design EWD valveplugs, figure 11 for Design EWS valve plugs, and fig-ure 23 for Design EWT valve plugs.

CAUTION

If replacing the piston ring (key 6) orseal ring (key 28), be careful not toscratch the surfaces of the ring groovein the valve plug or any of the surfacesof the replacement ring, or the replace-ment ring may not seal properly.

1. With the valve plug (key 2) removed, according tothe Trim Removal section, proceed as appropriate:

For the Design EWD carbon-filled PTFE pistonring, the ring is split in one place. If there is visibledamage, spread the ring slightly, and remove it fromthe groove in the valve plug. To install a carbon-filledPTFE piston ring, spread the ring apart slightly at thesplit, and install it over the stem and into the groove inthe valve plug. The open side must face along the

stem, depending on flow direction, as shown in view Aof figure 21.

For each Design EWD graphite piston ring, the ringcan be easily removed since it is in two pieces. A newgraphite piston ring is furnished as a complete ring.Use a vise with smooth or taped jaws to break thisreplacement ring into halves. Place the new ring in thevise so that the jaws will compress the ring into anoval. Slowly compress the ring until it snaps on bothsides. If one side snaps first, do not try to tear or cutthe other side. Instead, keep compressing the ring un-til the other side snaps. Be sure to match the brokenends when installing the ring in the valve plug groove.

For the Design EWT two-piece seal ring, the ringcannot be reused as it is a closed ring, which must bepried and/or cut from the groove. Then the elastomericbackup ring (key 29) can be spread slightly and re-moved.

To install a new two-piece seal ring, apply a generalpurpose silicone-base lubricant to both the backup ringand seal ring (keys 29 and 28). Place the backup ringover the stem (key 7) and into the groove. Place theseal ring over the top edge of the valve plug (key 2) sothat it enters the groove on one side of the valve plug.Slowly and gently stretch the seal ring, and work itover the top edge of the valve plug. The PTFE materi-al in the seal ring must be permitted time to cold-flowduring the stretching procedure; so avoid jerkingsharply on this ring. Stretching the seal ring over thevalve plug may make it seem unduly loose when in thegroove, but it will contract to its original size after in-sertion into the cage.

For the Design EWT spring-loaded seal ring, thering used on a valve plug having a 5-3/8 inch (136.5mm) or less port diameter may be removed undam-aged by first working the retaining ring (key 27) offwith a screwdriver. Then carefully slide the metalbackup ring (key 29) and seal ring (key 28) off thevalve plug (key 2). The spring-loaded seal ring usedon a valve plug having a 7-inch (178 mm) or greaterport diameter must be carefully pried and/or cut fromits groove. Therefore, it cannot be reused.

A spring-loaded seal ring must be installed so that itsopen side faces toward either the top or the bottom ofthe valve plug, depending on flow direction, as shownin view A of figure 21 or 23. To install a spring-loadedseal ring on a valve plug with a 5-3/8 inch (136.5 mm)or less port diameter, slide the seal ring (key 28) ontothe valve plug followed by the metal backup ring (key29). Then install the retaining ring (key 27) by insertingone end in the groove and, while turning the plug, press the ring into the groove. Again, be careful not toscratch any surfaces of the ring or plug.

To install the seal ring on a valve plug with 7-inch (178mm) or greater port diameter, lubricate it with a gener-al purpose silicone-base lubricant. Then gently stretchthe seal ring, and work it over the top edge of the

valve plug. The PTFE material in the seal ring must bepermitted time to cold-flow during the stretching proce-dure; so avoid jerking sharply on the ring. Stretchingthe seal ring over the valve plug may make it seemunduly loose when in the groove, but it will contract toits original size after insertion into the cage.

CAUTION

Never reuse an old stem or adaptor witha new valve plug. Using an old stem oradaptor with a new plug requires drillinga new pin hole in the stem (or adaptor incase an ENVIRO-SEAL bellows sealbonnet is being used). This drillingweakens the stem or adaptor and maycause failure in service. However, aused valve plug may be reused with anew stem or adaptor except withCavitrol III trim.

Note

The valve plug and valve plug stem forCavitrol III trim are a matched set andmust be ordered together. If the CavitrolIII valve plug or valve plug stem is dam-aged, replace the entire assembly (key 2,figure 25 and 26).

2. To replace the valve stem (key 7), drive out the pin(key 8). Unscrew the valve plug from the stem oradaptor.

3. To replace the adaptor (key 24, figure 20) onENVIRO-SEAL bellows seal bonnets, place the plugstem assembly and valve plug in a soft-jaw chuck orother type of vise so that the jaws grip a portion of thevalve plug that is not a seating surface. Drive out thepin (key 36, figure 20). Reverse the plug stem assem-bly and valve plug in the soft-jaw chuck or vise. Gripthe flat areas on the valve stem just below the threadsfor the actuator/stem connection. Unscrew the valveplug/adaptor assembly (key 24, figure 20) from thevalve stem assembly (key 20, figure 20).

4. Screw the new stem or adaptor into the valve plug.Tighten to the torque value given in table 7. Refer totable 7 to select the proper drill size. Drill through thestem or adaptor, using the hole in the valve plug as aguide. Remove any chips or burrs, and drive in a newpin to lock the assembly.

5. For ENVIRO-SEAL bellows seal bonnets, grip theflats of the stem extending out of the top of the bel-lows shroud with a soft-jaw chuck or other type of vise.Screw the valve plug/adaptor assembly onto the valvestem. Tighten as necessary to align the pin hole in the

Trim ReplacementExcept where indicated, key numbers in this sectionare referenced in figure 21 for Design EWD construc-tions, figure 21 for restricted trim detail, figure 22 forEWS construction, and figure 23 for Design EWTconstructions. Refer to figures 25 and 26 for CavitrolIII constructions and to figure 16 for Whisper Trim III.

1. With a restricted-trim seat ring construction, installthe adaptor gasket (key 14) and seat ring adaptor (key5).

2. Install the seat-ring gasket (key 13), seat ring (key9), or disk seat (key 22). With a PTFE-seat construc-tion install the disk and disk retainer (keys 21 and 23).With a Class 900 8 x 6-inch Design EWT valve withCavitrol III cage, install the spiral wound gasket (key12) on the seat ring.

3. Install the cage or cage/baffle assembly (key 3).Any rotational orientation of the cage or assembly withrespect to the valve is acceptable. A Whisper Trim IIIcage designated by level A3, B3, or C3 may beinstalled with either end up. The level D3 cage/baffleassembly or Cavitrol III cage assembly, however, mustbe installed with the hole pattern end next to the seatring. If a cage retainer (key 31) is to be used, place iton top of the cage.

4. For constructions other than TSO (tight shutofftrim) , slide the valve plug (key 2) and stem assemblyor valve plug and ENVIRO-SEAL bellows seal assem-bly into the cage. Make sure the piston ring or sealring (key 6 or 28) is evenly engaged in the entrancechamfer at the top of the cage (key 3) or cage retainer(key 31) to avoid damaging the ring.

5. For TSO (tight shutoff) trim constructions , per-form the following steps (refer to figures 6 and 7).

Thread the outer plug onto the inner plug until theparts seat metal to metal, using a strap wrench or sim-ilar tool that will not damage the outer plug guide sur-faces.

Mark the top of the inner plug and outer plug withalignment marks in the assembled position.

1. Apply a suitable high-temperature lubricant to theinside diameter of the C-seal plug seal. Also, lubricatethe outside diameter of the valve plug where theC-seal plug seal must be pressed into the proper seal-ing position (figure 8).

2. Orient the C-seal plug seal for correct sealing ac-tion based on the process fluid flow direction throughthe valve.

The open interior of the C-seal plug seal mustface up in a valve with flow-up construction (figure 8).

The open interior of the C-seal plug seal mustface down in a valve with flow-down construction (fig-ure 8).

Note

An installation tool must be used toproperly position the C-seal plug sealon the valve plug. A tool is available asa spare part from Fisher Controls or atool could be manufactured followingthe dimensions given in Figure 9.

3. Place the C-seal plug seal over the top of the valveplug and press the C-seal plug seal onto the plug us-ing the C-seal installation tool. Carefully press theC-seal plug seal onto the plug until the installation toolcontacts the horizontal reference surface of the valveplug (figure 10).

4. Apply a suitable high-temperature lubricant to thethreads on the plug. Then, place the C-seal retaineronto the plug and tighten the retainer using an ap-propriate tool such as a strap wrench.

5. Using an appropriate tool such as a center punch, stake the threads on top of the plug in one place (fig-ure 11) to secure the C-seal retainer.

6. Install the new plug/retainer assembly with C-sealplug seal on the new stem following the appropriateinstructions in the Trim Replacement section of thismanual.

7. Install piston rings by following instructions in theTrim Replacement section of this manual.

8. Remove the existing valve actuator and bonnetfollowing the appropriate instructions in the ReplacingPacking section in this manual.

CAUTION

Do not remove the existing valve stemfrom the valve plug unless you are plan-ning to replace the valve stem.

Never reuse an old valve stem with anew plug or reinstall a valve stem after ithas been removed. Replacing a valvestem requires drilling a new pin hole inthe stem. This drilling weakens the stemand may cause failure in service. How-ever, a used valve plug may be reusedwith a new valve stem.

9. Remove the existing valve stem and plug, cage, and seat ring from the valve body following the ap-propriate instructions in the Trim Removal section inthis manual.

10. Replace all gaskets according to appropriateinstructions in the Trim Replacement section in thismanual.

11. Install the new seat ring, cage, valve plug/retainerassembly, and stem into the valve body and complete-ly reassemble the valve package following the ap-propriate instructions in the Trim Replacement sectionin this manual.

CAUTION

To avoid excessive leakage and seaterosion, the valve plug must be initiallyseated with sufficient force to overcomethe resistance of the C-seal plug sealand contact the seat ring. You can cor-rectly seat the valve plug by applyingthe full actuator load. This force will ad-equately drive the valve plug to the seatring, thus giving the C-seal plug seal apredetermined permanent set. Once thisis done, the plug/retainer assembly, thecage, and the seat ring become amatched set.

With full actuator force applied and thevalve plug fully seated, align the actua-tor travel indicator scale with the lowerend of valve travel. Refer to the ap-propriate actuator instruction manualfor information on this procedure.

8. Inspect the lower seating surface where the valveplug contacts the seat ring for wear or damage whichwould prevent proper operation of the valve. Also, in-spect the upper seating surface inside the cage wherethe C-seal plug seal contacts the cage, and inspectthe sealing surface where the C-seal plug seal makescontact with the plug (figure 12).

9. Replace or repair trim parts according to the follow-ing procedure for lapping metal seats, remachiningmetal seats, or other valve plug maintenance proce-dures as appropriate.

Lapping Metal Seats (C-sealConstructions)Before installing a new C-seal plug seal, lap the lowerseating surface (valve plug to seat ring, figure 12) fol-lowing appropriate procedures in the Lapping MetalSeats section of this manual.

Remachining Metal Seats (C-sealConstructions)See figure 13. A valve plug with a C-seal metal plugseal features two seating surfaces. One seating sur-face is found where the valve plug contacts the seatring. The second seating surface is found where theC-seal plug seal contacts the upper seating surface inthe cage. If you machine the seats on the seat ringand/or plug, you must machine an equal dimensionfrom the seating area in the cage.

CAUTION

If metal is removed from the seat ringand plug and a corresponding amountis not removed from the cage seatingarea, the C-seal plug seal will becrushed as the valve closes and theC-seal retainer will strike the seatingarea of the cage, preventing the valvefrom closing.

Trim Replacement (C-seal Constructions)1. Apply a suitable high-temperature lubricant to theinside diameter of the C-seal plug seal. Also, lubricatethe outside diameter of the valve plug where theC-seal plug seal must be pressed into the proper seal-ing position (figure 8).

ENVIRO-SEAL Bellows Seal Bonnet

Replacing a Plain or Extension Bonnetwith an ENVIRO-SEAL Bellows SealBonnet (Stem/Bellows Assembly)Except where indicated, key numbers in this sectionare referenced in figure 21 for Design EWD construc-tions, figure 21 for restricted trim detail, figure 22 forDesign EWS constructions, and figure 23 for DesignEWT constructions. Refer to figures 25 and 26 forCavitrol III constructions and to figure 26 for WhisperTrim III.

1. Remove the actuator and bonnet according tosteps 1 through 6 of the Replacing Packing procedurein the Maintenance section.

2. Lift out the cage.

3. Remove and discard the existing bonnet gasket.Cover the valve body opening to protect sealing sur-faces and to prevent foreign material from entering thevalve body cavity.

Note

The ENVIRO-SEAL stem/bellows assem-bly for Design E valves is available onlywith a threaded and drilled plug/adap-tor/stem connection. The existing valveplug can be reused with the new stem/bellows assembly or a new plug can beinstalled.

4. Inspect the existing valve plug. If the plug is ingood condition, it can be reused with the newENVIRO-SEAL stem/bellows assembly. To removethe existing valve plug from the stem, first, place theexisting plug stem assembly in a soft-jaw chuck or oth-er type of vise so that the jaws grip a portion of thevalve plug that is not a seating surface. Drive out ordrill out the pin (key 8).

5. Then, reverse the plug stem assembly in the soft-jaw chuck or vise. Grip the valve stem in an appropri-ate place and unscrew the existing plug from the valvestem.

CAUTION

When installing a valve plug on theENVIRO-SEAL stem/bellows assembly, the valve stem must not be rotated.Damage to the bellows may result.

Do not grip the bellows shroud or otherparts of the stem/bellows assembly.Grip only the flat areas on the stemwhere it extends out of the top of thebellows shroud.

Note

The ENVIRO-SEAL stem/bellows assem-bly has a one-piece stem.

6. To attach the valve plug to the stem of the newENVIRO-SEAL stem/bellows assembly, it is necessaryto first attach the plug to the adaptor (key 24, figure20). Locate the adaptor. Notice that a hole has notbeen drilled in the threads where the plug screws ontothe adaptor. Secure the valve plug in a soft-jaw chuckor other type of vise. Do not grip the plug on any seat-ing surface. Position the plug in the chuck or vise foreasy threading of the adaptor. Thread the adaptor intothe valve plug and tighten to the appropriate torquevalue.

7. Select the proper size of drill bit and drill throughthe adaptor using the hole in the valve plug as a guide.Remove any metal chips or burrs and drive in a newpin (key 8) to lock the plug/adaptor assembly together.

8. Attach the plug/adaptor assembly to theENVIRO-SEAL stem/bellows assembly by first secur-ing the stem/bellows assembly in a soft-jaw chuck orother type of vise so that the jaws of the chuck or visegrip the flats of the stem extending out of the top ofthe bellows shroud. Screw the valve plug/adaptor as-sembly onto the valve stem. Tighten the plug/adaptorassembly until it is snug. Then turn the plug/adaptorassembly to the next pin hole in the valve stem. Drivein new pin (key 36, figure 20) to lock the assembly.

9. Inspect the seat ring (key 9). Replace, if necessary.

10. Place a new gasket (key 10) into the valve body inplace of the bonnet gasket. Install the new stem/bel-lows assembly with valve plug/adaptor by placing itinto the valve body on top of the new bellows gasket.

11. Place a new gasket (key 22, figure 20) over thestem/bellows assembly. Place the new ENVIRO-SEALbonnet over the stem/bellows assembly.

12. Properly lubricate the bonnet stud bolts. Installand tighten the bonnet hex nuts to the proper torque.

13. Install the new packing and the metal packing boxparts according to the appropriate arrangement in fig-ure 14 or 15.

14. Install the packing flange. Properly lubricate thepacking flange stud bolts and the faces of the packingflange nuts.

For graphite packing, tighten the packing flange nutsto the maximum recommended torque shown in table8. Then, loosen the packing flange nuts, and retightenthem to the recommended minimum torque shown intable 8.

For other packing types, tighten the packing flangenuts alternately in small equal increments until one ofthe nuts reaches the minimum recommended torqueshown in table 8. Then, tighten the remaining flangenut until the packing flange is level and at a 90-degreeangle to the valve stem.

15. Install the travel indicator parts and stem locknuts;mount the actuator on the valve body according to theprocedure in the appropriate actuator instructionmanual.

2. Lift out the cage. Remove and discard the existingbonnet gasket and bellows gasket. Cover the valvebody opening to protect sealing surfaces and to pre-vent foreign material from entering the valve body cav-ity.

Note

The ENVIRO-SEAL stem/bellows assem-bly for Design E valves is available onlywith a threaded and pinned plug/adap-tor/stem connection. The existing valveplug can be reused with the new stem/bellows assembly or a new plug can beinstalled. If the existing valve plug is re-used, and the adaptor is in good condi-tion, it may be reused also. However, never reuse an old adaptor with a newvalve plug. Using an old adaptor with anew valve plug requires drilling a newpin hole in the adaptor. This drillingweakens the adaptor and may causefailure in service. However, a used valveplug may be reused with a new adaptor.

3. Inspect the existing valve plug and adaptor. If theyare in good condition, they can be reused with the newstem/bellows assembly and they do not need to beseparated.

CAUTION

When removing/installing a valve plugon the ENVIRO-SEAL stem/bellows as-sembly, the valve stem must not be ro-tated. Damage to the bellows may result.

Do not grip the bellows shroud or otherparts of the stem/bellows assembly.Grip only the flat areas on the stemwhere it extends out of the top of thebellows shroud.

Note

The ENVIRO-SEAL stem/bellows assem-bly has a one-piece stem.

4. If the valve plug and adaptor are not in good condi-tion and must be replaced, the valve plug/adaptor as-sembly must first be removed from the stem/bellowsassembly and then the valve plug removed from theadaptor. First, place the stem/bellows assembly andvalve plug in a soft-jaw chuck or other type of vise sothat the jaws grip a portion of the valve plug that is nota seating surface. Drive out or drill out the pin (key 8).Drive out the pin (key 36, figure 20).

5. Then, reverse the stem/bellows and plug/adaptorassembly in the soft-jaw chuck or vise. Grip the flatareas on the valve stem just below the threads for the

actuator/stem connection. Unscrew the plug/adaptorassembly from the stem/bellows assembly. Unscrewthe valve plug from the adaptor.

6. To attach either the existing or a new valve plug tothe stem of the new ENVIRO-SEAL stem/bellows as-sembly, first attach the plug to the adaptor (if the valveplug was removed from the adaptor) as follows:
