The SC13 workingin a project of 27,920 mof stone columnsfor a cultural center, Greece.

The SNFCC will house the Greek National Opera,

the Greek National Library and a large urban park.

    This 187,800 m2 project will have a cost o US$803

million, nanced entirely by the Stavros Niarchos

Foundation, and once completed in 2015 it will be

turned over to the Greek State.

The Renzo Pianos Building Workshop has created

an emissions neutral acility. The environmentalqualities o the Cultural Centre are crucial to the

    design.

The top o the complex emerges rom a hilltop and

cantilevers out over the slope and is covered with a

*LEED is a national certifcation system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to encourage the

construction o energy and resource-efcient buildings that are healthy to live in. It is a voluntary, market driven

building rating system based on existing proven technology

The positive thing about the machine

is that it is built for constructing stone columnswith a very sophisticated electronic system and

a good data log system. Stone columns can

reach diameters up to 80 or 90 cm depending

on the ground conditions with good quality and

    continuity.

As part o its sustainability plan, the SNFCC eatures

a canal that unctions as anti-fooding protection

or the site, as well as a water recycling system that

    provides or on-site irrigation.

A green roo above the structure oers shade and

cooling, and a 2.5 acre solar photovoltaic system will

be set atop to generate power or both the library

and opera. One o the goals o the complex is to

    achieve LEED Platinum certication*.

    The Italian-Greek joint venture, Impregilo-TERNA,

has undertaken the construction o the Stavros

    Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC).

Enviprosystems SA has been appointed as sub

contractor or the ground treatment and oundation

    works.

The ground treatment works will involve the

    construction o 9975 meters o 600 mm diameter

stone columns and 17945 meters o 800 mm

diameter stone columns. The main equipment used

to achieve this important quantity o stone columns

was the PTC Stone Column rig SC13.

The stone columns were built ollowing a 2x2m

triangular grid and their depth was determined by

the soils conditions. The Vibrolance penetrated the

soil up to the layer containing clay sand with gravel.

Detailed inormation concerning the stone column

characteristics and the scope o the work done can

be seen in the ollowing table:
