28 MIDDLE EAST Have We Learned from Afghanistan, Libya and Iraq?

Fredi Winkler

Dear Friends of Israel,The elections have started in the USA

and the world is watching intently, to seewhat develops in the primaries. In 2008,Barack Obama entered the elections withan anti-war message. That message was

well-received by the American people, whowere tired and frustrated with the seemingly

endless war in Iraq. Now however, as the eight-year presidency of President Obama is nearly finished, theworld has in many ways become less secure, since the USAwithdrew its troops from the Middle Eastern war zones, asObama promised. There are many indications that the strategy chosen by

Obama isn’t exactly making the world a safer place. The fear of fanatical Muslim terror that continues to spread

will very likely be an important topic in the general election, and could even be decisive to winning the primaries. To this day, the people of Israel have never elected a

woman to that position of leadership, because that officer isalso the commander-in-chief of the military. Considering thecurrent, uncertain state of affairs around the world, securityconcerns will undoubtedly play an important role in the elec-tions.During a recent television interview in Israel, an expert in

Islamic and Arab affairs was asked how long the inter-Islamic conflict might last. Without hesitation, he said itcould go on for thirty years.Thirty years is notably similar to the “Thirty Years War” in

Europe, which was also a religious war and brought incon-ceivable misery to Europe. The expert clearly drew a parallelbetween the current religious war in the Islamic world andthe religious war that took place during the Reformation inEurope. In contrast to the religious war during the

Reformation, which was limited to Europe, the religious war in theIslamic world is of global proportions, so to speak, because theworld has become a global village and because the Muslims carrytheir fight to the peaceful nations.A newspaper article entitled, “The United States Needs to

Resume Leadership in the Global War on Terror,” written by ahigh ranking veteran of the Iraq War, calls for a change in theAmerican strategy. The Iraq War veteran wrote that the United States should recon-

sider its treaties with tyrannical Arab nations, such as Saudi Arabiaand the Gulf states, because their ideological aspirations of acaliphate are no different from those of the ISIS terrorists. He alsosaid that the United States should reconsider Turkey’s member-ship in NATO, as their usefulness is a thing of the past. In fact, it’squestionable if NATO itself is even still relevant in these times, since the end of the “Cold War.”Instead of these more dubious agreements, the USA should seek

an alliance with the Kurds, as they are the only group who has suc-cessfully fought against ISIS.The writer did not mention Israel at all in this context, likely

because Israel has not yet directly engaged in the fight againstISIS. It has been said that some ISIS fighters have stated that theydo not fear the US or anyone else, except Israel. The future of the conflict in the Islamic world could strongly

depend on who becomes president of the United States and howthat person rates the importance of American leadership in worldaffairs. No matter what, for those of us who know and love God’s Word,

we know that God will carry out His plan, and all indications arethat this plan is in progress.

In the knowledge that God is in control,Shalom,

Everywhere the exact oppo-site is taking place of whatIsrael is hoping for: peace. Allthese antichristian develop-ments will very soon be per-sonified in the highest poten-tial of evil: the Antichrist.

The increasing world-embrac-ing enmity toward Israel

belongs to the shadow ofArmageddon. This is why it isimportant to know the basic rea-sons for the enmity toward Israel. It will be clear to all that ultimate-ly, the following prophetic wordsof the Lord Jesus are not justrelated to Israel: “Ye shall be hat-ed of all nations for my name’ssake” (Matthew 24:9).

The deepest roots of the contin-ual Middle East conflict can befound in Genesis 3:15, where theLord God says, “And I will putenmity between thee and thewoman, and between thy seedand her seed.” Israel’s centuries-long conflict finds its beginningin its particular election. TheLord expresses this very clearlyin Isaiah 42:6, “I the Lord havecalled thee in righteousness, and

will hold thine hand, and willkeep thee, and give thee for acovenant of the people, for a lightof the Gentiles.” If Israel is calledto be a light of the Gentiles, thenit must of a necessity be separatedfrom the Gentiles. The first sepa-ration is described in chapters 11and 12 of the book of Genesis. Here the Lord on the one handrejected the nations as vessels ofsalvation (the tower of Babel),and on the other hand chose Israelthrough Abraham to bring salva-tion: “I will bless thee… and thoushalt be a blessing” (Genesis12:2).

Let us consider first Israel’sconflict with her neighbors. Theunceasing battle with the Arabnations is actually a family quar-rel. The present-day Jordan is theterritory of the Moabites andAmmonites, the descendants ofthe two sons of Lot from hisunion with his daughters (Genesis19:37-38). The family conflict ofAbraham, the father of Israel, began when he included Lot, theson of his deceased brotherHaran. We read in Genesis 12:4“And Lot went with him.”Because Lot at that time wentquite a distance with Abraham,

Why Does Israel Have So Many Enemies?

the conflict today between theseed of Abraham and the descen-dants of Lot is the most harmless.

Who are the Egyptians? Theyare direct blood relations of Israel. They would never have been thisif Abraham had waited for theLord and the fulfillment of Hispromise, but he listened to Sarai(Genesis 16:2). He took Sarai’sEgyptian maid Hagar to be hiswife, and Ishmael was born to her.We see that the conflict betweenthe Ishmaelites, who are EgyptianArabs, and Israel is essentially awar over heritage. Ishmael wantsto be the heir. The Lord had said toAbraham that He would blessIshmael, “But my covenant will Iestablish with Isaac, which Sarahshall bear unto thee at this set timein the next year” (Genesis 17:20-21).

Of what descent are the Syrians, the particularly cruel enemies ofIsrael? They descend, according toGenesis 22:20-21, from Abraham’sbrother Nahor. This name means, among other things, “snorting.”Another meaning is “envious.”

Nahor did not leavewith his brother toreach the PromisedLand.

Thus, Israel hadto endure continual family feuds. We know of Amalek, the illegiti-mate son of Jacob’s brother Esau, the father of the Edomites. TheAmalekites (or Agagites) were bit-ter enemies of Israel. This is clearfrom the book of Esther, where theAmalekite Haman—one Englishtranslation of his name is “illustri-ous”—the favored servant of theworld ruler Ahasuerus, decided toexterminate all Israel. It was the“final solution” of that time(Esther 3:5-6). But all enemies ofthe Jews failed and perished.Whoever touches this peopletouches her calling, touches herGod, which is why the Lord said,“He that toucheth you toucheth theapple of his eye” (Zechariah 2:8).The Egyptian Pharaoh, the Jew-hater of olden times, who alsoimagined the final solution in hisown way—namely, through themurder of all the newly born

Pharaoh, as Haman and also Adolf Hitler, planned purposefully the completeliquidation of Israel. We need have no illusions. Even if, as now, Israel has a briefrespite, Israel’s hating relatives have only her annihilation in view.

Hebrew baby boys—ultimatelyperished in the Red Sea with his“600 chosen chariots” and hiswhole army! (Exodus 14:7-31).

Pharaoh, as Haman and alsoAdolf Hitler, planned purposeful-ly the complete liquidation ofIsrael. We need have no illusions.Even if, as now, Israel has a briefrespite, Israel’s hating relativeshave only her annihilation in view.

Thus we come to a secondgroup of enemies of Israel. Theseare the non-Semitic nations, theanti-Semites or the nations assuch. No one should be horrifiedat the UN and EU’s anti-Israelstatements. How can we expect apro-Israel attitude from a decadentand demoralized Europe, whichloves the darkness, the swamp ofimmorality, more than the light?

Truly, Israel has no light but aglorious calling, for her highestpotentate, Jesus Christ—the Sonof God and the Son of Israel, whofirst was born in lowliness inBethlehem, and then later went toCalvary to reconcile the world toGod, thus fulfilled Israel’s callingin a perfect way—will return visi-bly in Israel. This is why in thesurrounding countries, near andfar, evil is maturing at a frighten-

ing pace: political hypocrisy, betrayal of Israel by her “friends,”blazing hatred, general moraldegeneration, rioting and rebel-lion, clenched fists at any form ofauthority, wars and rumors of war, everywhere the exact opposite ofwhat Israel so longs for: peace. Allthese antichristian characteristicstogether will very soon be person-ified in the highest potency ofevil, the Antichrist, who willbecome visible on this earth. Thiswill be the last and decisive colli-sion in the Middle East. The shad-ow of Armageddon is becomingmore threatening.

With this I have mentioned thethird and largest circle of enemiesof Israel: the restored RomanEmpire with the Antichrist at itshead. In this last conflict atArmageddon, however, it will notbe tanks, aircraft or artillery thatwill be decisive, but the appear-ance of the Lord Himself—andwith Him the called, chosen andfaithful (Revelation 17:13-14).

In spite of all this, we know thatIsrael will survive. Howevernumerous the enemies may be,Israel will survive because Jesusis coming again.(NAI1214/728)

THE FLESH AGAINST THE SPIRIT(Stations of Life)

By Norbert Lieth

Numbers 33 lists 40 placesbetween the exodus from

Rameses and the arrival of theIsraelites in the plains of Moab40 years later. In this issue, wewant to compare a station ofthe wandering in the wilderness

of Israel with our own life. TheBible says of the time of thewandering, “Now all thesethings happened unto them forexamples; and they are writtenfor our admonition, uponwhom the ends of the world arecome” (1 Corinthians 10:11; cf.Romans 15:4). Numbers 33:16-

17, “And they removed fromthe desert of Sinai, and pitchedat Kibroth-hattaavah (whichmeans “the graves of lust”).And they departed from Kibroth-hattaavah, and encamped atHazeroth.” What had happened? The

people had lusted after flesh, meat. How did this comeabout? They had let them-selves be influenced by thenon-Israelites, who had leftEgypt with them. Instead ofruling over them, they were theones who were ruled over.“And the mixed multitude thatwas among them fell a lusting:and the children of Israel alsowept again, and said, Whoshall give us flesh to eat?”(Numbers 11:4).Moses was so helpless that

he confessed, “I am not able tobear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me”(verse 14). We often come to apoint where the flesh or lust ofthe flesh wants to rule over usbecause it is always with us,and we say like Moses, “I can’tgo on. I can’t bear it anymore.”God gave Moses a com-

mand, to show him how hecould bear the lust of theIsraelites. He was to choose 70elders, and the Lord would putHis Spirit on them (Numbers11:16-17, 25-29). Later on, inthe camp of the Israelites therewere two men who were alsofilled with the Spirit, whichJoshua complained about. ButMoses replied, “Would Godthat all the Lord’s people wereprophets, and that the Lordwould put His Spirit uponthem!” (Numbers 11:29).That is the point! If the

whole people were under theleadership and obedience ofthe Spirit, it would not be ruledby the lust and deception of theaccompanying non-Jews. Thetwo men were not in the taber-nacle but remained outside inthe camp, and were filled withthe Holy Spirit. This is to sayto us that we should not onlybe spiritual in certain times andplaces (for instance, inchurch), but also in the“camp,” that is in our dailylives, at home, at work and atschool.A little later, a wind blew

from the Lord which brought

quail from the sea. Thepeople who were lustingafter flesh gathered themgreedily and began to eatthem. But while the fleshwas still between theirteeth, they were afflictedby a plague. The place ofthe event was later called“graves of lust,” becausethe people who lusted wereburied there (Numbers11:34). The lust of the fleshwas punished. Thus we see on the one

side the working of theHoly Spirit, and on the oth-er side the cry of the peoplefor flesh, and their lust. There are only these twopossibilities: order throughthe Spirit of God, or theresults of the lust of theflesh, “For if ye live afterthe flesh, ye shall die: but ifye through the Spirit domortify the deeds of thebody, ye shall live”(Romans 8:13). The great problem was

that the majority of theIsraelites did not make anyroom for the working of theHoly Spirit, but held fast to

Egypt and let themselvesbe deceived by the non-Israelites. So God made theshocking statement throughthe prophet Ezekiel, “Butthey rebelled against me,and would not hearkenunto me: they did not everyman cast away the abomi-nations of their eyes, nei-ther did they forsake theidols of Egypt” (Ezekiel20:8).It took God three days to

liberate His people fromEgypt, but 40 years andmore to free them from theidols of Egypt. The journeyto the Promised Land undernormal circumstanceswould last for 11 days(Deuteronomy 1:2), butbetween Israel and thereaching of the promisestood not the distance butthe condition of theirhearts. And many of themdied. It is tragic when a person

clings to sin so long untilhe dies of it in a “grave oflust.” Israel’s situationsymbolizes the battle of theSpirit against the flesh,

THE FLESH AGAINST THE SPIRIT (Stations of Life)

“Now these things were ourexamples, to the intent weshould not lust after evilthings, as they also lusted”(1 Corinthians 10:6). “Forthe flesh lusteth against theSpirit, and the Spirit againstthe flesh: and these are con-trary the one to the other: sothat ye cannot do the thingsthat ye would” (Galatians5:17; cf. Romans 8:4, 9, 13).Certainly, every Christian

can have his own under-standing of freedom inChrist within a Biblicalframework. For some aglass of wine is too much, and others find nothingwrong with it. One personhas no TV in the house; theother watches a limitedamount of TV. For some ahead covering is mandatory,

for others not. One is morebroad-minded and the othernarrow-minded. One has apronounced sense of humor, and the other is more seri-ous. Every Christian has hisor her idea of freedom andpersonal limits. And we maynot make our subjectiveattitude a law for others(Roman 14).For the case in which we

really are living in the flesh, the Lord has given us a con-science, the Bible, the HolySpirit and the Church. Weknow how to differentiatebetween freedom and sin.We know also that we maynot use grace as a cloak forsin. It is about things whichwe know are not good, butsin and lust of the flesh. and have a guilty con-science, and so burden our-selves and others. These arethings that leave us nopeace, and we are alwayslooking for an excuse for.How long did God take to

get us here where He wantsus? What do we put in Hisway, and what do we takewith us? What do we not letgo of? Is it the “mixed mul-titude,” the non-Christians?Is it the world that we letdeceive us?“And the mixed multitude

that was among them fell alusting: and the children ofIsrael also wept again…”(Numbers 11:4). In NewTestament language this is,“For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and thelust of the eyes, and thepride of life, is not of theFather, but is of the world”(1 John 2:16).Is it not also true, that what

we carry with us from ourold life and are not preparedto let go of, continuallybecomes a snare? A grave oflust? We often stumble overthe flesh because the Spirit

does not rule over us, and weare stuck and cannot makeany progress. “Walk in theSpirit, and ye shall not fulfillthe lust of the flesh”(Galatians 5:16). “They thatare Christ’s have crucifiedthe flesh with the affectionsand lusts” (verse 24).It is also possible that we

have not given up ourselves,i.e. let go; that we cling toour lives, our attitude, ourreligion, although we knowthat we should let go of our“hobbyhorse” and give it toJesus in order to really live.It is not that we are commit-ting “suicide,” but are sur-rendering our lives to Jesus.Moses let go and gave uphimself, in that he admitted,“I am not able to bear all thispeople alone.” And then Godintervened and workedthrough His Holy Spirit.“Stand fast therefore in the

liberty wherewith Christ hasmade us free, and be notentangled again with theyoke of bondage” (Galatians5:1).(NAI415/687)

The Beth Shalom work of theMidnight Call, with the Ho-

tel Beth Shalom in Haifa, Israel, was not really brought into exis-tence by Midnight Call Ministry, but began through the Lord’sleading. The Beth Shalom Associ-ation and the first guesthouse onHatishbi Street already existed, thanks to the Beatenberg BibleSchool and its connection to Is-rael. Dr. Gertrud Wasserzug, head of the Bible school at thattime and chairwoman of the BethShalom Association, was elderlyand was looking for someonesuitable who would take over thework and continue it. Shethought Wim Malgo, who was a

former graduate of BeatenbergBible School, was the right manfor it, especially as Israel playedan important part in his preach-ing. So it came about that theBeth Shalom work became a partof the ministry of Midnight Callin the year 1968.

As Beth Shalom was an alreadyexisting independent association,it could not simply be integratedinto the ministry of the MidnightCall, but remained within theministry as a separate organiza-tion. This resulted in that, be-sides the magazine Midnight Call, the magazine News from Israelwas produced, which soon be-came very popular and at times

The house in Haifa at that timewas not large enough to make ahotel out of it. Then the possibil-ity arose of buying a propertyfrom an elderly Christian lady, who wanted to spend her lastyears in Switzerland. The boardof the Beth Shalom Associationdecided to pull down the existinghouse and to build a new one.

Two Swiss couples directed thework in Israel at that time, butdid not want to remain in thecountry. The start of building wasplanned for October 1973, butthere was no one to direct thework. My wife and I were en-gaged to be married at that time, and after our wedding were askedto direct the work in Israel. We

arrived in Israel on September 28,and on October 9, to the surpriseof all, the Yom Kippur War began. The building was delayed untilthe spring of 1974 because ofthis. Finally, the new Hotel BethShalom was opened in October1975, after a building time of oneyear and six months.

From the beginning, one of themost important goals of the BethShalom work was to bring asmany people as possible to Israelfrom different places, through of-fering tours of Israel. That waythey could come to know andlove the land and the people. Inthe many years since the begin-ning of the Israel ministry, innu-merable people have come toIsrael, many of whom stayed inthe Beth Shalom Hotel. In the

first twenty years, especially inthe summer months, and on theJewish feast days many Israeliguests also came to us.

In the course of the Yom Kip-pur War, Beth Shalom and Mid-night Call created the ministry“Action for Israel,” which still ex-ists today. Through this, socialprojects in Israel are supported, the largest of which is the AssafHarofeh hospital.

In the now forty-one years ofthe Beth Shalom Hotel’s exis-tence, we have had two majorrenovations so that the hotel iskept up to date. At the momentwe are confronted with thequestion of whether we shouldrenovate and enlarge because in

the near vicinity, and even di-rectly beside us, new buildingsare being erected. For the firsttime, the city is giving permis-sion to build higher in order tomake the best use of the land. So, we are confronted withwhether or not we should alsotake advantage of this. It is nota decision to be taken lightly, and we are thankful for themany friends who are prayingabout this decision and evensupporting the Beth Shalomwork. We are convinced thatBeth Shalom, and with it thehotel in Haifa, has an importanttask to fulfill until our Lord Je-sus returns.

However, Israeli agriculturalresearchers have successfullymass cultivated another formof mycorrhizal fungi as a natu-ral method for boosting plantcrop yield and nutrition.

“Simply put, our mission isto cover the world’s arable land

When reading thevarious reports, such as pub-lished by Israel21c.org, one issurprised at the amazingachievements and new break-throughs, whether in agricul-ture or communication tech-nology. Israel is not dependenton anyone, but many nationsare beginning to realize theirdependency on Israeli know-how.However, something is lack-

ing, and that is Israel’s thirst for

true spiritual knowledge. Herewe are reminded of Amos8:11, “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I willsend a famine in the land, nota famine of bread, nor a thirstfor water, but of hearing thewords of the LORD.” Theopposite of famine is abun-dance. That, indeed, is takingplace right now, but the otherpart is yet to come: hunger andthirst for “hearing the words ofthe LORD.” 6194

UNLIKELY ALLIESPrime Minister BenjaminNetanyahu suggested that

many countries in theArab world now view theIsraeli-Palestinian conflictin a more realistic lightthan many countries ofthe European Union do.Speaking in an onstageinterview with CNN’sFareed Zakaria at the

World Economic Forumin Davos, Switzerland,Netanyahu said that

“Saudi Arabia recognizesthat Israel is an ally ratherthan an enemy because

of the two principlethreats that threaten them,Iran and Daesh,” he said, using the Arabic acronym

allowed to use any symbol identifiable withIsrael on their clothes or surfboards.

The hosts also said that should an Israeli wina gold medal the Israeli national anthem wouldnot be played.

“We have yet to receive visas, 24 hoursbefore our scheduled departure date and consid-ering the restrictions and difficulties the organ-izing committee has placed on us, we havedecided not to take part in the competition,”said chairman Gili Amir.

Commentary: Such blatant violationagainst the International OlympicCommittee’s own rules is not protested bythe rest of the world. Why not? BecauseJews can be treated differently. For Bible believers, this is significant

because it again proves Israel’s exception-ality. Israel tries desperately to be recog-nized like any other nation on the face ofthe earth, but the nations of the world sayno.Where did it all start? Over 3,000 years

ago, the Israeli leaders approachedSamuel, “…Behold, thou art old, and thysons walk not in thy ways: now make us aking to judge us like all the nations” (1Samuel 8:5). After Samuel explained thedisadvantage of being like all the othernations, we read in verses 19-20,

“Nevertheless the peoplerefused to obey the voice ofSamuel; and they said, Nay;but we will have a king overus; That we also may be likeall the nations; and that ourking may judge us, and goout before us, and fight ourbattles.”Later in history, on 14 May

1948, the Declaration ofIndependence for the found-ing of the State of Israelincluded the words, “Weappeal to the United Nationsto assist the Jewish people inthe building-up its State and

to receive the State of Israelinto the comity of nations.”That is Israel’s desire eventoday. For us as Bible believ-ers, particularly those whoread and believe the prophet-ic Word, we see clearly thatIsrael is different. They arethe only nation in the world toqualify for the definitionexceptional. 6197

Putin Closest Friend of Israel?RUSSIA

Love him or hate him, RussianPresident Vladimir Putin’s mili-tary intervention in Syriaunquestionably upended MiddleEastern politics. Putin supportedSyrian President Bashar al-Assad,established several military basesin Syria, created a de-factoRussian-Shi’ite axis, confrontedTurkey and forced the West to re-engage with him.

While all the region’s majorplayers feel the influence ofRussia’s military campaign, onecountry overlooked by commen-tators analyzing Russia’s Syriancampaign is Israel. Israel’s inter-ests vis-à-vis Russia run wideand deep and are impossible forIsrael to ignore. The history of the Israeli-

Russian relationship is compli-cated, to say the least. The SovietUnion supported the creation ofIsrael in 1948, but then tiltedtowards the Arab world in theearly 1960s and even threatenedto attack Israel in both the 1967Six Day War and 1973 YomKippur War.With the emergence of Putin,

though, Israel found the closestthing to a friend it’s ever had inMoscow. Israel and Russia sharea common fear of terrorism, andin 2014 Putin was one of the fewworld leaders to support Israel’sOperation Protective Edgeagainst Hamas, saying “I supportIsrael’s battle that is intended tokeep its citizens protected.” In2005, Putin became the firstRussian president to ever visitIsrael, visiting the Western

Wall—Judaism’s holiest site—aswell as Israel’s Yad VashemHolocaust memorial, wherePutin observed a moment ofsilence. The Russian presidenteven reportedly purchased anapartment in Tel Aviv for histhen-84-year-old Jewish Germanteacher.Despite Putin’s positive dispo-

sition towards Russian Jews, giv-en the history of anti-Semitismin Russia, Israeli leaders surelyunderstand that a serious deteri-oration in the Moscow-Israelrelationship could hurt the sta-tus of the country’s relativelysmall Jewish population. Thisoffers Israel yet another reason tomaintain good relations with theKremlin. After Russia annexed Crimea,

Israel abstained from voting on aUnited Nations resolution con-demning Russian actions—which in UN-speak is actuallyequivalent to voting against it.The U.S. State Department

issued a statement noting it was“surprised Israel did not join thevast majority of countries thatvowed to support Ukraine’s terri-torial integrity in the UN.”

NEWS INBR IEFTAKING BACK LANDIsrael confirmed it wasplanning to appropriate alarge tract of fertile landin the occupied WestBank, close to Jordan, amove likely to exacerbatetensions with Westernallies and already drawinginternationalcondemnation. The appropriation covers154 hectares (380 acres)in the Jordan Valley closeto Jericho, an area whereIsrael already has manysettlement farms built onland Palestinians seek fora state. It is the largestland seizure since August2014.The land, in an area fullyunder Israeli civilian andmilitary control andalready used by Jewishsettlers to farm dates, issituated near the northerntip of the Dead Sea.

-reuters.com21 January 2016

Despite American criticism, shortly thereafterIsrael also agreed on the installation of a specialencrypted communications line betweenNetanyahu’s and Putin’s offices. Given theUnited States’ strong opposition to Putin’s moveon Crimea, Israel’s willingness to defy its closestally indicates the extent to which Israeli leadersseek to maintain a good relationship withPutin.

-blogs.reuters.com14 January 2016

Commentary: This is not surprising consid-ering that the bulk of Israelis are of Russian(Soviet Union) heritage. To play both cardsis Israel’s only choice. Their motive is crystalclear: support from the East as well as theWest. There is no need for 100% allegianceto one side or the other. Israel, although tinyin comparison with the rest of the world, isdestined to lead; they are well capable ofassociating with different camps.Meanwhile, Russia’s 200,000 plus Jews

will have to move to Israel one day. That alsoapplies to the 5 million plus Jews in theUnited States. Prophecy will be fulfilled, “AndI will plant them upon their land, and theyshall no more be pulled up out of their land

which I have given them, saith theLORD thy God” (Amos 9:15). 6199(For more on Israel’s place in prophecy, read Are We Really Living in the LastDays? ITEM #2277.)

Commentary: It is no longer asurprise that Israel is one ofthe leading countries when it

comes to high-tech. What isnoticeable is the languagetranslation. We know thatGod is the originator of thelanguage division. This isreported in Genesis 11, “Thewhole earth was of one lan-guage, and one speech.”Then in verse 7 we read, “Goto, let us go down, and thereconfound their language, thatthey may not understand oneanother’s speech.” To keepnations separated by lan-guages is God’s clear inten-tion. Now this obstacle isbeing detoured technologi-cally. Where will it lead? Toman’s independence fromGod, as was the case at thebuilding of the Tower ofBabel, “…Go to, let us buildus a city and a tower, whosetop may reach unto heaven;and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroadupon the face of the whole

earth” (Genesis11:4). 6203(For more on worldhistory, read Godand the Nations,ITEM #2206.)

Scenes from September 11, 2001,vaguely resemble those ofNovember 13, 2015: Terroristscarry out an unthinkable attack ina country that had not expectedone. Anger ensues after the shockand horror, and subsequently awar on terror is declared.Just over 14 years after the

attacks on the twin towers in NewYork City, after large-scale wars inAfghanistan and Iraq, and after therise of “Islamic State” (IS), peaceand an end to terrorism have hard-ly come about.“Political decision-makers are

evidently not willing to learn frommistakes made in the past,” saidMichael Luders, a political scien-tist and Islam scholar. He is refer-ring to military intervention inAfghanistan and Iraq. Internationalmissions in the Middle East,Central Asia and North Africahave not fostered stability, butinstead sped up the deteriorationof the nations affected.“Iraq is an example of how a

brutal dictatorship became a glob-al breeding ground for terrorism,”

Hippler said. The power vacuumthat had been left in Iraq and nowthe destabilization of Syria haveled to the formation of IS, andnow IS is also finding a home inLibya.France has stepped up its

airstrikes in Syria and Iraq.President Francois Hollandewants to defeat IS on a militarylevel and is campaigning fromMoscow to Washington for astrong coalition against the organ-ization. An overwhelming majori-ty in the House of Commonsapproved Britain’s participation inthe airstrikes in Syria.“Even though the IS is pursuing

an obvious strategy, the West isfalling into a trap,” Luders said.He said the best thing that couldhappen is that international forcesprevent IS from expanding itssphere of influence—“andairstrikes have achieved a substan-tial part of this goal.”Military operations would

quickly reach their limits in thebattle against IS. It is particularlyimportant that large groups of the

population in Syria and Iraqbecome involved, said WolfgangRichter, of the German Institutefor International and SecurityAffairs in Berlin. And, he said, there would need to be a Sunni-led alternative to groups such asIS, rather than governments heav-ily influenced by foreign interests.

Commentary: ISIS is garnishingthe headlines in the worldmedia. In spite of many militarysuccesses against this organi-zation, the intended target oferadicating ISIS has not beenreached. Why not? Becauseforeign forces (France, UK,Russia, USA, etc.) are foreignenemies. Historically, it hasbeen proven that foreign inter-vention unites the people in theopposite camp even more.It is our understanding that

eventually ISIS will be crippledand become an undergroundmovement depending on isolat-ed terrorist activity. But what the world should be

learning is that total unity of allnations is the only way to bring

this murderous organization toits end. What does it mean biblically?

It is a blessing in disguise forIsrael. While the world is occu-pied with defeating ISIS, Israelis gaining time and knowledgeto prepare for the seeminglyinevitable invasion by radicalIslamist entities; it is prepared tomeet any invasion with superiortechnology. When it comes to Israel, there

is no second guessing aboutthe outcome. Jeremiah 31:35-36 reads, “Thus saith theLORD, which giveth the sun fora light by day, and the ordi-nances of the moon and of thestars for a light by night, whichdivideth the sea when thewaves thereof roar; The LORDof hosts is his name: If thoseordinances depart from beforeme, saith the LORD, then theseed of Israel also shall ceasefrom being a nation before mefor ever.” 6204
