Classes have selected a country of their own to focus on and learn things about over the last few weeks. On Thursday at 10am the classes will be part of a parade showing their countries colours. It will be quite a short assembly however everyone is welcome to come and have a look. In respect to recent events in Christchurch NZ we will also be holding a minute silence. The new music program is well on the way to being organised. Some parents who went to our school as kids may have actually played the instruments that we have in our storeroom in the band that existed at the time. Angie Brace played the "C" horn (whatever that is!). We are looking at having our old school instruments serviced and made available for the children participating in the Music in Schools program beginning this year. We're almost there! I really think that this is a great thing for our school and for our community. It creates an opportunity for families that didn't previously exist in Kyogle, that is, for their children to learn to read and play music with all the cognitive and social benefits that this brings. If we can combine this meaningfully with Mr Nolan’s band, we are then exposing the children to the joys of playing music with others. This builds social skills and increases the likelihood that they will continue with their musical practice. It also creates a way for sharing their music with the broader community. It gives them something to give! Drew children have been settling beautifully into ‘Big School’, learning all the different rules and routines that are part of primary school life. The children are enjoying all the different learning areas that school has to offer and particularly look forward to creative arts and sport. English Each morning we spend the first hour working in small groups experiencing hands on skills and rich literacy activities. Each group gets explicit teaching time with Mrs Cole and Mark. We spend the next hour learning the foundations required to begin writing. We are currently learning to: think of an idea for writing, vocalise our sentence and write some known sight words or first sounds. Mathematics After lunch we practise our counting and number skills and explore a range of new maths concepts. We work as a whole class in pairs and in a variety of groupings as we experience new games and activities to enrich our mathematical understanding.

Principal’s Message

Hi All, To help celebrate the diverse community in which we and the rest of the world live, we will be celebrating Harmony Day this Thursday, 21 March.

Now’s your chance to have a say in school matters! The Annual General Meeting for the P&C will be held Wednesday, 20 March

from 5:30pm. All parents, carers, and community members are welcome and all office positions will be declared vacant. Due to families moving away, we are currently without a Treasurer and Secretary and we are also seeking a new Uniform Shop Coordinator. If you have any questions about the roles, please feel free to contact current office bearers Angie Brace, Helen Black or Jill Runciman for more information.

Many hands make light work, so we’d love to see new faces join the P&C to assist at whatever capacity they are able - baking, crafting, fundraising, administrative support, etc. Any amount of help you can provide - no matter how big or small - is welcome. It doesn’t have to be a huge commitment!

This year’s fete will be held on Friday, 10 May and will include a stall for Mother’s Day gifts. To assist in the planning of the fete contact Joy Newman at the school.

Kyogle Public School celebrates Harmony Day every year to foster values of inclusiveness and diversity in our school community. Thursday, 21 March is the national date for Australia's Harmony Day,

which celebrates the country's cultural diversity. It coincides with the United Nations' International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Harmony Day is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background. We will be celebrating Harmony Day with each class picking a country to focus on for the weeks preceding Harmony Day. It would be really good if parents could support Harmony Day by helping their student source some simple ‘dress ups’ relevant to the country picked by their class. It may just be the colour of their flag or an orange t-shirt which is the Harmony Day colour. On Thursday, 21 March there will be a Harmony Day assembly in the morning when the students ‘parade’ in their costumes. All Welcome! Just as a reminder class countries are:

We are very lucky to have The Lismore Conservatorium Youth Jazz Orchestra come to our school this Friday to perform for the whole school. They will be performing after recess in the Hall.

Everyone welcome.

Thank you to the Parents that have volunteered to assist this program to start. We are hoping to be able to continue through all the classes , but will need more volunteers for this aim to be sustainable. Sessions run for one and a half hours on a Monday and/or a Tuesday morning with Parents helping small groups cook a section of the meal . The meal is shared on a long table with the whole class. It will be a fun and bonding experience for all involved. If you or a Grandparent can spare time just for your class it would be greatly appreciated. Dieticians will assist with the groups. Proposed class days are:

Announcements

Congratulations to the following students who recently participated at the Ballina Pool in the Regional PSSA Swimming Championships. This was the last carnival prior to the State selection representatives. The senior girls relay team were just beaten and missed selection by less than one second. All competitors performed exceptionally well and were wonderful ambassadors for our school. A very special congratulations goes to Luke Barnett who was named in the Far North Coast Swim Team to compete in Sydney on April 11. A big thankyou also to all of the parents who have assisted with travel arrangements. Without your help, their participation may not have been possible.
