Principal’s Message
Welcome to week 5. Things have been flying along as usual with the final classroom carpet put down last week. We now have some really lovely learning spaces for our kids to flourish in.
We do on occasion - with a very small number of children - reach the end of our behaviour system and unfortunately a short suspension can be the result. As stated in State Policy a short suspension will be imposed for continued disobedience or aggressive behaviour (including bullying and online bullying). A long suspension will be imposed for physical violence resulting in injury, possession of a prohibited weapon, firearm or knife, possession of illegal substance or serious criminal behaviour. Fortunately we don’t have to go here very often and are driven by state policy when required to do so. The vast majority of our students will never have to be concerned with this level of consequence.

6S has started the year with a bang. We have formed our literacy and
maths groups and are now working at student’s individual ability. The
students are motivated and are working very well together. We have
also started our fitness program. We are training twice a week and
working hard to beat our personal bests. After our training session on Fridays we
have been rocking out using Just Dance to finish the week on a high note.

What’s happening
Kyogle Public School celebrates Harmony Day every year to foster values of inclusiveness and diversity in our school community. Thursday, 21 March is the national date for Australia's Harmony Day, which celebrates the country's cultural diversity. It coincides with the United Nations' International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Harmony Day is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background. We will be celebrating Harmony Day with each class picking a country to focus on for the weeks preceding Harmony Day. It would be really good if parents could support Harmony Day by helping their student source some simple ‘dress ups’ relevant to the country picked by their class. It may just be the colour of their flag or an orange t-shirt which is the Harmony Day colour. On Thursday, 21 March there will be a Harmony Day assembly in the morning when the students ‘parade’ in their costumes.

Community Announcements
Kyogle Public School is lucky enough to have some Student Dieticians working at the school for the first half of the year. They will be running ‘Kids in Kitchen,’ which will eventuate with cooking classes with the kids in their classroom. Children who have hands on cooking experiences are more likely to eat fruit and vegetables and, in the long term, develop healthy eating habits. To make this program successful we need community support of Parents, Grandparents or interested community members. The Dieticians will be running a workshop on how to help kids become familiar with cooking, covering topics such as safe cutting of food, how to read a recipe and healthy food choices. After this workshop the trained volunteers and Dieticians will run a few sessions of ‘kids in the kitchen’ with their children’s class or other classes. This will be followed by a shared lunch of what was cooked. The workshop will be running (tentatively) on Tuesday,12 March from 9.30am - 12.30pm. Please talk this up amongst your friends and help us to get this program happening in the school. A note will be going home this week to sign up, or phone Sue at the school.
Registration forms available form the office.
