State of Tyler County Breakfast The Wetzel County Chamber of Commerce and the Sistersville Genesis HeathCare Center joined
forces last Thursday (8/22) to present the 2019 State of Tyler County Breakfast. This annual event
brings prominent individuals in their fields together to speak before an audience made up of those
who are stakeholders in the future of the county and provides for an opportunity to network and
make connections that might further the goal of advancing the county.
Ryan Thorn, Director of Economic Development for Senator Joe Manchin kicked
off the event with a brief overview of what the Senator has been doing in
Washington. He then read a short statement written by Senator Manchin saying
that he regretted not be able to attend himself. After his remarks, Mr. Thorn
opened the floor to questions with the caveat, that no one ask if the Senator has
plans to run for Governor.
The Superintendent of the Tyler County School system, Shane
Highley spoke next. He spoke about the progress the school system had made of
the previous year and about several of the upgrades that have been made, or are
planned for local schools. He also highlighted the free meal program available for
all students and how important that is for proper development. He wrapped up by
talking about the new holistic approach that the school system is adopting.
Eric Vincent and Eric Peters, two of the counties commissioners
also spoke. Eric Vincent provided a broad overview of the financial
state of the county which he touted as much improved. Eric Peters,
meanwhile, spoke as a member of the Tyler County Development
Authority and informed those in attendance about the plans and
programs they have across the county.
The Final speaker of the morning was Dr. Charles Zelek, Senior Economist with the U.S.
Department of Energy. Dr. Zelek spoke about the status of the fossil fuel industry in the upper
Ohio Valley. He spoke about the importance of the resources currently being extracted from out
area and the potential impact of a cracker plant on the region. The
emphasis of his speech was about the importance of keeping and
processing these products in our area and some of the impediments
making it uncertain whether that would be a possibility or not. He
also spoke about the impact that not realizing the full potential of
our local resources would have not just locally, but nationally.
