This is accomplished by providing interest-based programs that meet industry standards.

Course Description: Anyone who deals with any phase of business can benefit from an understanding of basic accounting principles covered in this first-year course. Students planning to attend college will find a high school introduction to the subject helpful. Students planning to operate their own business will find this course a must. Students will learn how to work with journals, ledgers, balance sheets, and income and capital statements of a self-owned business. You will assume the role of an accountant for a small fictional business. You will also do some of your accounting work on a microcomputer.

Articulation: This course is Bibb County approved and articulated with Central Georgia Technical College’s program. Course Prerequisites: Computer Applications Career Pathways: Courses must be completed in the order listed below.

Members have the opportunity to go on field trips, participate in competitive events, perform community service, interact with the business community, and attend state and national conferences. Classroom Procedures:

1. Print only with permission. When I want you to print, I will instruct you to do so. Upload ALL of your work to Edmodo. No excuses for “I forgot to save/upload…”

2. At the beginning of each class, please check your computer, mouse, book, and desk. If anything is misplaced, broken, or dirty, you must tell me so that you will not get in trouble for something someone else has done.

3. Internet games and Internet use is on an as-needed basis with permission only. Non-negotiable! 4. Clean up your trash and push your chair under the table as you leave each day.

Attendance: Due to the nature of this course, it is imperative that you attend class daily. Almost all of the work assigned in this course is completed in class. Attendance has a direct correlation with your grade. The more often you are in class, the more likely you will succeed in the class. The Bibb County Board of Education policy on attendance will be upheld. Make-up Policy: It is your responsibility to get make-up work from me if you are absent. Make-up work must be completed within five school days. Most, if not all work, will be posted on Edmodo. Re-do Policy: Students who score a 69 or lower on a test or project may redo the test within five school days for a maximum score of 70.

Directions: 1. Using the Access database template (see next page), students will create a

database of various countries. 2. Students will research at least five different countries on three different

continents. The United States may not be included and two students can not research the same country.

3. Using the database of information, students will then create a brochure highlighting the research gathered.

Foreign Countries 1. Launch Access. In the opening dialog window, select Create a new

database using blank Access database. When the File New Database window appears, name your database “Country Profile” and save it to a location accessible to all your students.

2. When the database window opens, double-click on Create table in Design view.

3. Create fields for Country, Capital, Population, Religion(s), Landmarks, Map, Flag, Famous People, Official Language, Industries, Main Exports, Main Imports, Currency, Agricultural Products, WTO Member, UN Member and Sources.

4. Click in the Data Type cell for the Map field. Click the drop-down button and select OLE Object from the list. Repeat this step for the Flag field.

5. By default, text fields hold only 50 characters, but you will want more room than this for several fields. To increase file size, click on the field to display Field Properties at the bottom of the screen, and select the General tab. Increase the field size value to 255.

6. Close the table. You will be prompted to assign a primary key, but you don’t need to because the database will contain only one table.

7. Now design a form for entering information into the table. In the Database window, click Forms in the Objects column, then double-click on Create form by using wizard.

8. In the sequence of Form Wizard dialog boxes, select all available fields in your table, then choose columnar layout and a style for your form.

9. In the final Form Wizard dialog box, confirm a title for your form, select Modify the form’s design, then click Finish. The form will appear in Design view.

10. To prevent images you import into the database from being clipper or distorted, select the Picture field by clicking on it, then select Properties from the View menu. Select the All tab, click in the Size Mode field, and select Zoom from the dropdown list. Close the Properties window.

11. Make any other changes you would like to the form in Design view, either by selecting and dragging objects to different locations, or by editing properties as in Step 10.

12. Close and save the database. Now students can create records for the countries they have chosen.

• WHEN HE WAS BORN HE WAS GIVIN UP FOR ADOPTION , DON’T THINK I WOULD’VE DID THAT. AFTER THEY GAVE HIM UP FOR ADOPTION THEY GOT MARRIED AND HAD ANOTHER BABY. HE DIDN’T FIND OUT ABOUT HIS BIOLOGICAL PARENTS UNTIL HE WAS 27 YEARS OLD. A MAN AND WOMAN BY THE NAME OF CIARA&PAUL ADOPTED HIM WHEN HE WAS AN INFANT. AS HE WAS GETTING OLDER PAUL WAS SHOWING HIM HOW TO WORK AND FIX AND DO DIFFERENT THINGS TO ELECTRONICS. WHEN HE WAS IN ELEMENTARY HE WAS SO SMART THAT THEY WANTED TO ADVANCED HIM ON TO HIGH SCHOOL, BUT PARNET DECLINED THE DECISION. AFTER HIGH SCHOOL, HE ENROLLED AT REED COLLEGE IN PORTLAND, OREGON. HE DROPPED OUT OF COLLEGE AFTER SIX MONTHS AND SPENT THE NEXT 18 MONTHS DROPPING IN ON CREATIVE CLASSES. THEN LATER HE RECOUNTED HOW ONE COURSE IN CALLIGRAPHY DEVELOPED HIS LOVE OF TYPOGRAPHY.

• IN 1976, WHEN HE WAS 21, HIM AND WOZNIAK(DADDY) STARTED APPLE COMPUTERS. THE DUO STARTED IN THEIR FAMILY GARAGE, AND FUNDED THEIR ENTREPRENEURIAL VENTURE AFTER JOBS SOLD HIS VOLKSWAGEN BUS AND WOZNIAK SOLD HIS BELOVED SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR. Markets shut for consecutive trading days for first time

Hurricane Sandy, which made landfall Monday evening, will keep Wall Street closed a

second day.

The storm affecting roughly 50 million people as it thrashes the American East Coast

kept New York-based markets shut Monday, and the exchanges have confirmed they will

remain closed Tuesday – the first time the markets will be closed for consecutive regular

trading days since 1888.

Both the New York Stock Exchange and CME, which manages the New York Mercantile

Exchange, shut down operations before the storm arrived. Monday marked the first time

the financial markets have been shut down other than for a holiday since Sept. 11, 2001.

The last time the markets were shut down for a weather event was Hurricane Gloria in

1985.

Prior to Monday, there had been plans to allow electronic trading to go forward.

However, with public transportation also being closed, the hazards in getting people into

and out of New York City shut down even that option.

With markets shutting down, some major companies that were due to report earnings this

week are electing to postpone their announcements. Among those delaying earnings

were Acorda Therapeutic (NASDAQ:ACOR), Pfizer (NYSE:PFE), Thomson

Reuters (NYSE:TRI) and NRG Energy (NYSE:NRG). All will report later this week.

WALL STREET BRACES FOR THE STORM | Wall Street is preparing for Hurricane

Sandy. All stock and options markets in the United States will be closed on Monday

as the storm approaches New York. Financial firms like Goldman Sachs and

Citigroup, which have offices in the designated evacuation zones, are telling

employees to work from home.

This is the first time the New York Stock Exchange has closed trading for

weather reasons since Hurricane Gloria in 1985, DealBook’s Michael J. de la

Mercedwrites. The exchange had planned to stay open electronically while closing

its physical trading floor, but with the city going into emergency mode on Sunday

night, the N.Y.S.E. took the extra precaution. “It was a judgment decision based on

the safety of a lot of market participants, especially as the storm seems to be getting

more severe,” Lawrence E. Leibowitz, chief operating officer of NYSE Euronext, told

Bloomberg News. The Nasdaq and BATS stock markets are also closing.

Wall Street firms are implementing contingency plans. MostGoldman

Sachs employees are working from home, with some reporting to sites in

Greenwich, Conn., and Princeton, N.J., according to an internal

memorandum reviewed by DealBook. Morgan Stanley is having employees at its

lower Manhattan offices work remotely, according to The Wall Street

Journal. Citigroup,Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase and the Blackstone

Groupare also closing offices in Manhattan.

It is not clear when trading will open again. Officials warned that New York City

might be dealing with the storm until Wednesday.

RANDOM HOUSE AND PENGUIN TO MERGE | Two majorpublishing houses are

joining forces. Bertelsmann, the German owner of Random House, plans to

combine the publisher with Penguin, owned by the British media conglomerate

Pearson. According to the terms of the deal announced on Monday, Bertelsmann is

set to control 53 percent of the venture with Pearson holding the rest. The deal

comes as publishers try to protect themselves against the rising clout of Amazon

and other online retailers. The announcement says the two companies plan to invest

more in “new digital publishing models.”

FACEBOOK LOCKUP EXPIRES | What do Facebook’s employees think of the

company’s prospects? The market will soon find out as more than 270 million

shares become eligible to be sold. The shares, which amount to more than 10

percent of the total outstanding, are mostly controlled by employees.

The social network’s battered stock price got a lift last week after better-than-

expected quarterly results. But some analysts predict the rally could be short-lived.

“I would imagine that half of that stock will get sold,” Michael Pachter, a Wedbush

analyst, told CNBC. There is still more potential pressure coming in November,

when more shares can be traded.

Plans are changing due to the hurricane. A spokeswoman for Bloomberg TV said on

Sunday that Monday’s guest lineup was “in flux.” The schedule is thinner than usual

at CNBC, but Richard Kovacevich, Wells Fargo’s former chairman and chief

executive, is scheduled to appear at 4:30 p.m. Kweku Adoboli, a former UBS trader

on trial for fraud and false accounting, takes the stand in London. In Madrid, Prime

Minister Mariano Rajoy of Spain meets with Premier Mario Monti of Italy to

discuss the European debt crisis. Burger King Worldwide, which rejoined the

public markets in June, reports earnings before the market

opens. Herbalife andTumi Holdings report results Monday evening. Data

on personal income and outlays in September is to be announced at 8:30 a.m.

NOMURA SWINGS TO A SLIGHT PROFIT |

Nomura Holdings reported a small profit of 2.8 billion yen ($35 million) for the

recent quarter, compared with a loss of 46.1 billion yen in the period a year earlier.

The Japanese firm said it benefited from rising sales in its fixed-income business,

which helped offset weakness in its equities division. Still, the results fell short of

the 5 billion yen profit that analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News were expecting. “I

get the impression Nomura was just making ends meet,” Mitsushige Akino, an

investment manager in Tokyo, told Bloomberg News.
