Episode IV: A New Hope (1977)

Episode IV in the George Lucas epic, Star Wars was actually the first to be shot and released. The plot follows the life of a simple farmboy, Luke Skywalker, as he and his newly met allies (Han Solo, Chewbacca, Ben Kenobi, C-3PO, R2-D2) attempt to rescue a rebel leader, Princess Leia, from the clutches of the Empire.

Within R2-D2’s memory banks are the plans to the Empire’s flagship weapon the “Death Star”, these plans allow the rebellion to attempt to destroy the Death Star and turn the tides to return the galaxy to Jedi rule.

Luke makes his journey from a kid working on his uncle's farm to hero as the very British sounding track “The Throne Room / Finale” scores the presenting of medals by Princess Leia.

Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Fleeing the evil Galactic Empire, the rebels abandon their new base on Hoth, Princess Leia, Han Solo and the droids R2-D2 and C-3P0 escape in the damaged Millennium Falcon. During their escape the Falcon’s encounter with an asteroid field is made even more frantic by William’s tense piece “The Asteroid Field”. The crew of the Millennium Falcon survive but are tricked into capture by Darth Vader when they dock at the Cloud City of Bespin.

Meanwhile Luke Skywalker travels to the marsh planet of Dagobah, where he is instructed in the ways of the Force by the ancient Jedi master Yoda. Yoda’s subdued power and mischievousness is portrayed by “Yoda’s Theme”. After Luke has a vision that his friends are in danger he leaves for Cloud City to rescue his friends, it is there that while dueling with Darth Vader, Luke learns that Vader is in fact his father.

Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi (1983)

As the Emperor himself oversees the construction of the new Death Star by Lord Darth Vader and the evil Galactic Empire, smuggler Han Solo is rescued from the clutches of the vile gangster Jabba the Hutt by his allies, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Chewbacca.

The rebels travel to the moon of Endor on which the empire has built a shield generator to protect the new Death Star while it’s being constructed. They enlist the help of the moon’s inhabitants, the Ewoks and together they battle against the Empire’s army of Storm Troopers. During this epic battle John Williams uses fanfares, wood percussion and playful motifs in the cue “The Forest Battle” to depict the primitive fighting methods of the Ewoks. Eventually the generator is destroyed and the rebel fleet is able to destroy the new Death Star and bring peace to the galaxy.

Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)

A peace loving Planet “Naboo” is threatened by the Galactic Trade Federation, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi travel to Naboo to warn the Queen of the galactic fallout which is to follow. When Naboo is attacked, the ruler, queen Amidala and a Gungan called Jar Jar Binks evade capture along with Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

During a “pit stop” to repair their ship, they land on a planet called Tatooine where they meet a slave boy called Anakin Skywalker. Qui-Gon Jinn notices that Anakin displays signs of being a Jedi while he wins a “pod race”, as the drivers prepare for this race we hear “The Flag Parade”. Young Skywalker is asked to leave his home and mother to train to be a Jedi knight with Qui-Gon Jinn, winning the pod race allows him to do this, it’s during the emotional separation that Williams uses “Anakin’s Theme” with poignant effect.

Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi confront one of the Dark Jedi behind the invasion, Darth Maul, a three way lightsaber fight rages on as “Duel of the Fates” underscores the action. Meanwhile Darth Maul’s master Darth Sidious continues to lead the invasion as a "phantom" behind the scenes.

Episode II: Attack Of The Clones (2002)

Set 10 years after the events in "The Phantom Menace", Padmé Amidala is now a Senator representing her homeworld. A faction of political separatists, led by Count Dooku, attempts to assassinate her. There aren't enough Jedi to defend the Republic against the threat, so Chancellor Palpatine enlists the aid of Jango Fett, who promises that his army of clones will handle the situation.

Meanwhile, Obi-Wan Kenobi continues to train the young Jedi Anakin Skywalker, who fears that the Jedi code will forbid his growing romance with Amidala, this romance is made even more evident with John William’s tender music “Across the Stars”. Because of the conflict between the Jedi and Count Dooku’s clone army, the Galactic Republic finds itself at the brink of a civil war.

Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith (2005)

After three long years of relentless fighting, the Clone Wars are nearly at an end. Chancellor Palpatine has been taken hostage by the nefarious General Grievous, leader of a droid army, the mechanized battle troops of the Separatist Alliance. Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker take on a desperate rescue effort to free Palpatine and destroy Grievous.

Meanwhile, back on Coruscant, Chancellor Palpatine has grown in power. His sweeping political changes transform the war-weary Republic into the mighty Galactic Empire. To his closest ally, Anakin Skywalker, he reveals the true nature of power and the promised secrets of the Force in an attempt to lure him to the dark side.
