Joel:Yeah,sothestoryitfeelslike,youknow,it'sbeenjustafewyearsbackbutIactuallystarted,Ithinkbackin2010,IgraduatedschoolanddideverythingIwassupposedtodogrowingup,youknow,wenttocollege,gotadoublemajor,traveledabroad.AndIbasicallygraduatedinthemiddleofthe2009recession.AndsoIdidallthesethingsyou'resupposedtodogrowingup,gotalllikemyGPAs,and,youknow,learnedSpanishandtraveledabroad,didsports.AndthenIgraduatedandthenthenextthing,youknow,onthatchecklistisgogetajob.AndIgraduatedinthatrecessionandIcouldn'tgetajobforlikeninemonths.Andthisbasically,putmeinaworldwhereIwasjustquestioning,youknow,whatthenarrativethatIhadbeenfedforawhile.

Andit'salongstory.Iappliedtoabunchofdifferentplaces.Eventually,Igotturneddownatallofthem,eventuallywasapplyingtoplaceslikeStarbucksandcouldn'tgetcalledbackfromStarbucks.AndIwasbasicallysittinginmyparent'sbasementatthetime,youknow,wonderingifthiswasit,thisiswhatIsignedupfor,thisiswhatIdidallthisworkfor.SoIwenttoschoolgotthispieceofpaperfor.AndIjustfeltbadformyselfforawhile.Ididn'treallydoanythingaboutitatfirst,IjustkindofwatchedabunchofNetflix,anddrownedinmyownsorrowforalittlebit.

ButIwaswritingdownallthesethingsthatIwantedtodo,IwasstillprettyaspirationalaboutthesethingsIactuallywantedtodo.AndIsawsomefriendsofmine,youknow,startingbusinesses,gettingjobs,travelingtheworld.AndIwantedtodoallthesethings,butIcouldn'tevengetajobatStarbucksandeverythingseemedreallyimpossibleforme.AndsowhileIwaswatchingNetflix,Iwaskindalikemakingthislistforawhile.AndIthinkIendedupeventuallyrunningoutofNetflixshowstowatch,itwas2009,2010notalotofstuffonthere.Andeventually,youknow,Ifinished,youknow,kindofescapingintotheworldofNetflixandtookanotherlookatmylist.Andallthestuffonmyliststillseemedprettyimpossible.Ididn'thaveanymoney.Icouldn'ttraveltheworld,Icouldn'tstartmyownbusiness,Icouldbarely…youknow,Icouldn'tevengetajob.

Butoneofthethingsonmylistwasrunatriathlon.AndIdidn'thaveanexcuseforwhyIcouldn'trunatriathlon.AndsoIdecided,youknow,there'snoexcuseformenottoputonmyshoesandrunaroundtheblock.Andthere'snoexcuseformenottogetonlikemycrappyoldMiddleSchoolmountainbikeandridearoundtheblockandstarttrainingforthisthing.AndsoeventhoughIdidn'tknowanythingabouttriathlons,IdecidedIwasgoingtosignupanddoit.AndIsignedupforanindooroneatLifeTimeFitnessbecauseIdidn'twannadrownintheopenwaterswimofanormaltriathlon.AndIwasreallynervousaboutit.Ididn'treallyknowanythingabouttriathlons.ButIsignedup,Ididit,andtrainedfortwomonths,andIdidit.AndIrememberthinkingattheendofthat,"Youspentsomuchtimetellingyourselfthatthiswasimpossible.Whatotherthingsouttherecouldyouactuallygooutanddoifyoujusttrainedforitandwentforit?"

Andsothatkindofbecameliketheincitingincidentformetogooutand,like,startlookingatthislistthatIhadmadethatIthoughteverythingfeltimpossible,butlike,whatifIwentoutandactuallytriedtodoit.Andsothatwaskindoftheoriginstory.Andsofromthere,Ijustkindofstartedchallengingmyselftodolongerandlongerraces.Istartedrealizing,onceIstartedpushingmyselfthatIcouldgoalotfartherthanIeveranticipated.AndthenItookthatsametypeofmindsetandappliedittolikemyjobsearch.AndtheneventuallyhowIapproachedacoupleofthefirstjobs,Iwasabletoactuallygetandworkmywayup.Andtheneventually,youknow,leavingandstartingmyownstuff.

SoImpossible,yeah,that'skindoftheoriginstoryofImpossible.ButkindofthemissionofImpossibleistousehardphysical,difficultchallenges,totransformyourmindsetandtransformthewayyouboth,youknow,seeyourself,butalsoseetheworld.And,youknow,byputtingyourselfinthosesituationswherethey'rehard,difficultoryou'renotquitesureifyoucandothem,youpushthroughandyou'reabletodothemanyways.Youkindofcomeouttheothersidewithadifferentperspectiveonwhatyou'recapableof.Andsothatwastheoriginstory.Butsinceyouknow,I'vedonealotmore,youknow,Igot…Ibasicallytrickedmyselfthroughtriathlonsintobecomingarunner,starteddoingalotofultramarathons,endedupdoingseveraldifferentracesforcharity.AndIthinktodaywe'veraisedalmost$300,000fordifferenteducationalnon-profit.Sothat'skindof…youknow,it'sbeeneightornineyearsorso,butthat'slikethequickcoupleminuteoverviewofhowitgotstarted.

Katie:Ilovethatstorysomuch.AndIlovethatyouaredoingthisalsotohelpcharitiesaswell,andtobringawareness,that'samazing.Foranyonewhoisn'tfamiliar.SoI'veranatriathlonandthatistome,atremendousaccomplishment,it'snosmallfeat.Younowrunultramarathonscanyoujustdefinewhatthatisforanyonewhodoesn'tknow?

Joel:Anultramarathonisanythingbeyondanormalmarathon.Soifyourunanormalmarathon,andthenyoulikerunhome,oryourunthe7-Eleven,oranything,it'stechnicallyanultramarathon.Buttypically,mostultramarathonsareanywherebetweena50K,whichisabout31miles,and100miles.Butnowpeoplearegettingcrazyandthey'relike,peoplearedoing200-mileraces,multi-dayraces.Andyouknow,kindofonceyoudiveintothisworld,peoplegetreallynuttyreallyquick,buttypicallyanultramarathonstartsat50K,anditwillgo,youknow,asfaraspeoplewillletitgo.

Katie:What'sthelongestoneyou'veeverrun?

Joel:SothelongestthatonethatIdidwasthe100KinAntarctica.

Katie:Wow.Soyoupickedthecoldestplacetorunthelongest…

Joel:Yeah,soitwas62milesIthinkthatwasthatone,so.Butyeah,like,onceyougetintothespace,it'slike,okay,it'slike100K,buttherearedefinitelypeoplewhodo100-mileracesallthetime.Andthenitjustraisesyoursightsonwhat'spossibleandwhatpeopleactuallydooutthere.Andthatwasoneofthemind-blowingthingsformewas,youknow,IkindofkeptmyselfbeforeIevergotinthisworldIwaslike,Idon'tevenknowifIcandoatriathlon.AndsoIdidn'tevendolikeasprinttriathlon,Ididanindoortriathlon.Andonceyoukindofpeekintothisworld,itjustkeepsgoingandgoingandgoing.Andyourealizewhatpeoplearecapableofwhentheydecidetodoit.

weresupposedtocheck.AndI'veheardthisstorysomanytimes.Andit'ssomethingIthinkaboutquiteabitasaparentnow,becauseI'mgonnahavekidsbeforetoolong,whoareattheageofdecidingtogotocollegeornot.AndIgetthefeelingthattheeducationsystemhasdrasticallychangedevensincewewerethere.Andcertainly,sinceourparentswerethere.SoI'mcurious.Now,beingontheoutsideofthis,andhavingcreatedthisentrepreneuriallifeandthiscareerthathelpedpeople,doyouhaveadifferentperspectivelookingbackon,forinstance,goingtocollege,education?Andwouldyoudoitagain?Orwouldyoupursueotheroptionsearlier?

Joel:SothewayI'vesaiditformyselfisIthinkwe'relikethelastfewyearswhereyoucouldkindofmakethecaseforcollegeifyoulike.EvensinceIgraduatedcollegehasgoneupdramatically.AndIjustdon'tseetheROIonitlikefromafinancial…like,peoplewannatalkabout,okay,there'sanexperienceand,youknow,youcouldtalkaboutthat.IthinkIwouldhavemuchratherjusttakenthemoneyandlike…orevenhalfthemoneyandputittowardslikeexperimentingindifferententrepreneurialmanners.BecauseallthethingsthatIdidinschoollikenothingreallywassuperactionable.IthinkIprobablycouldhavepaidbetterattentioninlikeaccountingclass,andIwouldactuallyhavebeenprobablythemorelike,usefulclassthatIhadtaken.ButIrememberwetooklikeaclassonentrepreneurship,anditwasaboutputtingabusinessplantogetherandpitchingpeople,andit'slike...andIhaven'tdoneabusinessplanlikethatyet,youknow,mostofmystuffhasbeenbootstrapping.Soit'sbeenmuchmoreaboutlike,gaininganaudienceandbuildingtrafficandcreatingproductsthatpeopleresonatewith.

Andso,forme,fromaneducationstandpoint,Ithinkeducation,likeabasiceducation,isreally,reallyimportant.Andthat's,youknow,thestuffthatwedowithPencilsofPromise,asfarasmakingsurepeoplehave…youknow,under-resourcedareasaroundtheworldhavethechancetolearntoreadanddomath.Andyouknow,learnthesereallybasicskillsthatwekindoftakeforgranted.Butthenwhenitgetstothishighereducation,andyouknow,there'ssomeplaceswhereIthinkbeing…youknow,ifyou'regonnabealawyer,youhavetodowhatyouhavetodo,ifyou'regonnabeadoctor,youhavetodowhatyouhavetodo.ButforwhatIwenttoschoolfor,andIkindofwasoneofthoseguysthatwentintoschool,andIwaslike,"Idon'tknowexactlywhatIwannado,"youknow,allthesecareersthatpeoplehavehadpickedoutsincethirdgrade,I'mnotoneofthoseguys.Therewasneveranymessagingforthatpersonforme.

AndsoIwouldn'thave…Idon'tthinkIwouldhave,ifIhadthechancetogobackandyouknow,spendthatmoneyagainandspendthosefouryears,IthinkIwouldhavedoneitinadifferentway.And,youknow,withcostsgoingupthewaytheyhave,evensinceIgraduated,Idefinitelydon'tthinkIwouldspendthemoneythatthey'rechargingthesedaysunlessitwasajustatop-tierschool.Andatthatpoint,you'rejustbasicallybuyingintothegroupofpeoplethatyou…youknow,thenetworkthatyouwannabein.Andsowecango...I'vegotthiswhole…youknow,I'vegotamuchlongerrantonthat,butIjustdon'tseetheROIforthetypesofclassesthatItook.AndIthinkthere'salotofotherwaysthatIcouldhaveinvestedthattimeandenergyandlearnedskillsthatwerealittlebitmorepractical.

Katie:Yeah,Iagreewithyouwholeheartedlyonthat.Andassomeonewho'salsoareallygoodstudent,andIwasverygoodatthegameoftakingtestsandallofthatinschool,likeIdidwhatIwassupposedtodointheeducationside.Andthenintheadultworld,andespeciallyintheentrepreneurworld,IrealizedtherewerestillalotofskillsIhadtolearnonthefly,andespeciallythingsliketoleranceforfailureandresilience.Becausethosethingsarenotbuilt,andatleasttheyweren'tbuiltintomyeducation,especiallyifyou'readecent

studentandyoudon'thavetofailveryoften.Ifeellikethat'ssomethingthatwasreallyabigjumpformeatthebeginningofmyentrepreneurialjourneyandinparenthoodbecausethere'salotofstrugglesbuiltinthereaswell.Andit'ssomethingIknowyoutalkaboutquiteabitis,youknow,buildingresiliency,andhowdoyoudevelopthattoughmindset.AndIthinkforalltheparentslistening,that'ssomethingreallyimportanttoimparttoourkidsthatareprobablynotgettingnecessarilyfromtheeducationsystem.Solet'stalkmindsetalittlebitandhowyouwereabletomakethatswitchpersonally,andthennowhowyouhelppeopledothesame.

Joel:Yeah,sooneofthecorethingsthatItalkaboutisliketryingtogetpeopleoutoftheirheadandintotheirbodies.And,youknow,alotofpeoplehavedigital-relatedjobs.Sothey'redoingjobswherethey'resittingbehindacomputerallday,or,youknow,evenifthey'renot,they'relookingattheirphoneallthetime,andwelivesomuchofourlives,inourhead.Andwehaveallthesementalstressesthatjustliveinyourheadthey'renotlikeoutinreallife.And,youknow,evenlike100yearsago,ifyou'relikeactuallystressedatyourjob,itwasbecauseyou'redoingphysicallabororsomething.Andatleastthenyou'dgetlikesomesortofendorphinrushfrom,youknow,theactualphysicalworkout.Andsopeopleendupbeingstressedallthetime,mentallyfromthesedifferentsituations,butthey'renotabletolike,getitout,they'renotabletodoanythingwithit,becausethey'rejustlikeconfinedattheirdesk.

Andso,forme,IfoundIwaslikehavingarealhardtimewhenIwasinmyparent'sbasement,tryingtolikedealwiththestressesoflifeandfiguringouthowto,like,navigatethisnewworld.BecauseIdidn'thaveanywaytolike…Ididn'thaveanyoutlet,Ididn'thaveanythingtodoortofocusthat,youknow,kindofenergyonanditjustkindofspiraledforlackofabetterword.Andsoforme,whatIfoundistakingonthesephysicallydifficult,hardchallenges,doeswondersforwhenteachingyouaboutdoinghardthings,whetherthey'reactuallyphysicalorthey'remental.OnceIrealized,like,Icangorun50miles,andit'sreallyhardandamile30,andmile40,andmile45,I'mgonnawannaquit,butIcankeepgoinganyways.Iwasabletotakethatmindsetandtakethattoprettymucheverythingelseliketoentrepreneurship,torelationships.Togorealizingthatlikejustbecausesomethingishardjustbecausesomething'spainful,doesn'tmeanit'snecessarilybad.Anddoesn'tmeanIcan'tdoit,itjustmeansit'sgonnabe,likeslightlypainfulforawhile.

And,youknow,whenpeopletalkaboutrunningtheseultramarathonsor,youknow,runningthesefardistances,youknow,theycouldsaylike,"Oh,it'ssofar,it'ssodifficult,Icanneverdothat."Butifyoulike,zoomout,andyou'relike,"Okay,well,I'mgonnabegoing,youknow,I'mgonnabemovingfor8hours,I'llbeinlike,maybealotofpainfor8hours,or12hoursor,youknow,16hours,orwhateverthenumberis."Butit'sjust16hours.Ittransformsyourperspectiveonwhatyou'reabletodoandwhatyou'reabletodealwith.Andwhenyougothroughthosethings,andthey'reactuallyphysicallydifficult,whereyou'relike,Irememberatmile45,when,like,mybackseizedupandlikeIdidn'tthinkIcouldkeepgoingandIjustwantedtogohomeandIquitandthenIdidn't.Youcantakethatreferencepoint,youcantakethatspecificmemorythatreal-lifethingthathappened,andremindyourselfinotherareasofyourlifethat,"IcangooutandIcandothishardthingtoo."

Andso,youknow,that'salothardertodoifyouneverhavelikerealphysicalexperiences,andyoujustliveinyourheadoryouliveonyourphoneoryouliveinyourcomputer.Andifyou'reableto,like,gooutintherealworld,haveareal,meaningful,difficultexperience,andbeabletopointtothat,it'saremindertoyourselfthatyoucandohardthings.Andforme,thatwasthebiggestthinglikeIstilldon't…youknow,whenIfinished

thatfirsttriathlon,partofmestilldidn'tbelievethatIdidit.Iwaslike,"No,youcouldn'tdothis,otherpeoplecoulddothis,butyoucouldn'tdothis."ButthenIhadliketheresultslistandIhadthetimes,andIpointeditonthesheet,andIwaslike,"Well,actually,youknow,nomatterwhatyouthinkaboutyourself,youjustdidthat.Soyouarenowthepersonthatcandothattypeofthing."Sowhat'sthenextthingthat'sonthelist?Andwhatcanyougodonext?

AndIthinkthat'sreally,reallyimportant,andreallyunderutilized.Where,likeIsaid,mostpeopleIthinkliveintheirhead,andthey'rescared…theygetstuckintheirhead.Becausesomuchofourstuffisonourphoneoronourcomputer,or,youknow,you'rejustprocessingitmentally.Andwhenyou'reabletoputitoutintothephysical,intotherealworld,there'ssomethingaboutitthatletsyoucompletelychangehowyoulookatacertainsituation,andwhatyou'recapableof.

Katie:Yeah,exactly,like,Ithinkthere'ssomuchrightnowthat'spopularaboutdoingalloftheinnerworkandthementalworkandthenhowthat'sgonnamanifestinyourlife.AndIthinktheonlythingreallywhyisabout,justdoingitwithyourbody,evenifyourmindhasn'tquitecaughtupandthenlettingyourmindlearnfromthat.AndlikeIsaid,I'veonlydoneatriathlon.Butthemindsetpartyoutalkedaboutactuallyjustremindedmeoflaborwithmybabies,becauseit'slikeyousaidat16hoursinmycase,usuallylike24hours.Butit'sjust24hours,inmymindItellmyselfthatlikeIcandoanythingfor24hours,Icandothis.Andthenthemindsetlikethatmentaltoughnessontheotherside,whenyouaccomplishitisincredible.Andyougettokeepthatwithyou.Andit'ssuchagoodreminderwhenyouhavestruggles,anyotherstrugglesthatcomeupthataresmallerthanthat,you'relike,"Well,Ialreadydidthat,so,ofcourse,Icangetthroughthis."

Ilovetheideatoohowyoutalkaboutanimpossiblelist,becauseyouknow,likeeverybodyhastheirlikebucketlist?Butthat'slikethethingsyoudobeforeyoudie,whichiskindofdepressing.Ilovethisideaofanimpossiblelist,whichiskindoflikefunchallengestoconquer.SoI'mcurious,whataresomeofthethingsbothonyourownonerightnowandthatyouhavepeopleinyourcommunity?Likewhataresomepopularthingspeopleputonthisimpossiblelist?

Joel:Yeah,sotherealquickdelineationbetweenabucketlistandimpossiblelististhatabucketlist,kindofpeopletendtomakingabucketlist,andtheygetrealexcitedaboutmakingabucketlist.Andthey'relike,"Hey,here'sallthethingsI'mgonnadobeforeIdie"andtheymakeit,theygetallexcited.Andthentheygetrealexcitedwhentheymakeitandthentheydon'tdoanythingonit.

Katie:Itdoes.Andassomeonewhoalsodoesnotfeellikeanaturalrunner,andprettymuchanytimeIrun,I'mjustlike,"Oh,whenisthisgonnaend?"Imuchpreferweighttraining.AndI'vereadsomeinterestingstudiesactually,andfromcoachesindifferenttypesofsportsthatareusingreallyheavyweighttraining,actually,totraintheirenduranceathletesortheirsprinters.Becauseit'ssupposedtoactuallyincreasecertainmusclefibersandtheabilityto,Iguess,haveincreasedenduranceandfast-twitchfibers.Haveyouseenanyofthatdata?Orhasthatbeentrueinyourexperience?Likeareyouabletogetthosesamebenefitswithouthavingtodoasmuchendurance,becauseIknowthere'salsosomedatathatextremeenduranceandextremecardioallthetimecanbedetrimentaloverthelongrunaswell.

Joel:SoIfoundthattheweighttraining,actually,likemuscularlybalancedmeout,becauseI'mavery…like,ifyoulookatme,I'mveryquadandcalfheavy.I'mlikeveryhappywith,youknow,thewayIruneven,like,I'mjustaquadandcalfheavyperson.AndwhatactuallyIfoundout,youknow,thisfreakaccidentthathappenedinPatagonia,wasreally…itwasalittlebitofafreakaccident,butitwaskindofjustlikewaitingtohappen.Becauselongstoryshort,I'vesupertighthips,I'vekindofweakhamstringsandglutes.Andsowhatwashappeningwasmystridewasgettingoff.And,like,youknow,thiswouldhavehappenedonewayoranother.Butbasically,onehipwastighterthantheother,onestrideisalittlebitshorter.

Anditwasbasically,Iwasjustkindofreinforcing,like,onceyouhaveaweakmusculargrouporlikeaspecificarea,andyoudon'tdoanythingtoaddressit,itjustkindofdigsyourselfarut,ifyouwill.AndsowhathappenedwhenIstartedweighttrainingwasIstartedactuallyrebalancingmyselfalittlebit,Istartedbuildinghamstringandglutestrength.AndIstartedlikeactuallychangingtheway,bothmyformandkindofhowmyoverallrunninggait,liketheperformanceofmyoverallrunninggait.Andsothatonitsown,likebeyond,youknow,peoplewannadebatethemeritsofstrengthtrainingversuscardioandallthisotherstuff.

Andforme,Ifound…andIthinkyou'reseeingalotofrunnersreallystarttorealizethisisthatit'sreallyeasytodevelopbadhabitswhilerunning.Andifyou'reabletoputinthetime,eventhreetimesaweek,todosomestrengthworkalongwiththat,youreally…youkindofinsulateyourselffromalotoftheinjuriesthatrunnersgetfromjustrepetitiverunningoverandoveragain,becausethey'renevertakingthetimetoaddresstheweaknesses.Andsoifyoucandothatwithstrengthtraining,Ithinkthecomboisreallyawesome.Andforme,again,youknow,thegoalbeing,functionallyfittogooutanddoadventureintheworld.Ineedboth,you
