• What is that underlying ingredient in tea that makes you crave for it so bad, that makes you an addict of the cuppa? No.

•It's not your genes but caffeine instead.

• Though the intake of caffeine is known to be helpful, if consumed in excess quantities it can have a reverse effect on you.

Caffeine is a member of the xanthine family. Caffeine is odourless, has a bitter taste and mixes easily with water.

It makes you alert, stimulates metabolism and contributes to an increase in dopamine levels in the blood, which greatly affects your mood.

• The amount of caffeine in a cup of tea varies according to the type of tea leaves used and also the method used to prepare it.

• On an average, tea leaves have about 3% caffeine by weight, although this can range from 1.4% to 4.5%.

• How much caffeine is present in your tea is also decided by factors like the type of soil used, the position of the tea leaves on the plant, the type of tea plant and the way it is grown.

• The preparation is important too

• Tea leaves that are big release less amount of caffeine whereas it is just the opposite with the smaller tea leaves.

• In addition to this, the amount of time the leaves are boiled or soaked in water also affects the amount of caffeine present in your tea.

• If you want to cut the ratio of caffeine from your daily dose of tea, boiling your tea leaves in cooler water is advised.

• Do the opposite if you want extra caffeine in your tea.
