The iconic chapel at St. Dorothy’s Episcopal Camp and Retreat is 105 years old and is a lovely place for services or quiet meditation.

I first experienced St. Dorothy’s as a guest at a women’s retreat. I walked the beautiful grounds, ate the tasty

food, and enjoyed the fellowship of

other women while contently sinking into one of the comfy couches in Lyd-ia House. The next time I vis-

ited was to bring my daughter to

camp. Feeling quite nervous, she was greeted by Katie, the bubble-blowing camp director, and was assured that even the pickiest of eaters find deli-cious food to eat at St. Dorothy’s.

And that’s the truth: everyone finds nourishment here, whether it’s spiritual, social, physical or, yes, nu-tritional. Campers, retreat-goers, sol-itary visitors, and most especially our Health Campers find a place of ease and comfort, fun and joy. When I un-derstood the gifts that St. Dot’s offers, I decided to dedicate a portion of my volunteer-life to its mission. I have joined the Board of Directors in order to strengthen the development pro-gram. While it’s true that this is not an easy time for nonprofits, and some funding streams to St. Dot’s have gone dry, it’s more important to remember

there are a great many untapped re-sources in the nearby community and in the community of campers, old and new. It’s these new opportunities that I hope to help us find in order to main-tain the camp’s wonderful grounds, buildings, programs, and people. I also hope to help the camp grow and meet new and exciting challenges.

I hope you will join me in support-ing St. Dot’s. I welcome your sugges-tions and assistance!

From Feb. 8-March 31, a team from AmeriCorps National Civilian Corps lived and worked at St. Dorothy’s to help re-duce hazardous wildland fuels. Now eight months later, corps member Tim Wetzel, 19, reflects on his time with us.

I miss the ocean. I have been immersed in the lives of the people of Sonoma County, and I have fallen in love. The area is filled with hikes, redwoods, and the coast. I cannot describe this place in words, or by any other means. The Pacific Ocean sweeps out from the coast like a giant blue carpet swallowing the horizon. The coastal hills come and go like sleeping giants. The redwoods are filled with a sense of peace and rest. The roads resemble giant black serpents stretching across the country side. The cities are built of love and a sense of community that can only be felt in small towns.

The people in this place are welcoming and easy go-ing. The community has just the right personality to be at peace here. No one seems to be angry with anything

but misuse of the land and each other. Nothing here seems to be rushed;

everything seems to take as much time as it needs to be completed. Work here seems more like a vaca-

tion than work. The scenery is pay enough for most people. Families

seem happier and more con-nected here than anywhere I have ever seen in my life. What is there not to fall in love with in this place of Sonoma County?

Savory Scones

Peel and dice shallots and scallions. Saute them in olive oil until translucent. Splash some white wine and steam onions a few more minutes until wine evaporates. Spread on sheet pan to cool. Set aside.

Whisk together egg and buttermilk in large mix-ing bowl. Add cooled shallots and scallions, and grated cheeses to buttermilk mixture. Grind plenty of black pepper into bowl.

Measure dry ingredients into a food processor. Pulse a few times. Cut cold butter pats into flour mixture and pulse a few more times just to incorporate butter.

Add flour mixture to milk, egg, cheese, and onions. Stir lightly, just to fold together wet and dry. Turn the dough onto a lightly-floured surface. Knead a few times. Divide into 4 portions. Shape each portion into 1-1/2” high disks. Cut with dough cutter or chef’s knife into 6 wedges per disk, or smaller if desired. Round biscuit cutters work great too!

Arrange scones on baking pan that has been covered with a sheet of parchment and sprayed. If time allows, cooling the scones in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before baking is optimum. Make an egg wash (1 yolk + 2 tbsp. cream or milk) for the tops. Brush on top of scones. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Bake at 450 for 20-30 minutes. After 15 minutes, rotate pan from top to bottom shelf for even browning. Serve hot with your favorite baked egg dish. Makes 24 scones. ~ Diane Larkin, Head Cook

I would like to invite you to come and get your hands dirty with me. There is a job for everyone: whether you are good at organizing records, tak-ing inventory, building, or digging, St. Dorothy’s needs your help. Consider an hour of service on your next vestry retreat, a youth service-orient-ed deanary weekend, a volunteer component to your next family retreat, an Eagle Scout project, or a multi-day stewardship project.

With advance notice (preferably about one month), the St. Dorothy’s staff will guide you and your group in your volunteer efforts. Check the box at right to see what needs you can help meet.

The first year of the Burly Club was a success! A total of 6 members joined, with many more inquiries and i n t e r e s t e d p o t e n t i a l members.

In 2011, St. Dorothy’s will continue to reap the benefits of the club. There will be two teams of AmeriCorps NCCC members working at St. Dor-othy’s from January to April. In the true spirit of Burliness, membership dues will support the work of Ameri-Corps teams at both St. Dorothy’s and

the Bishop’s Ranch. Fuels reduction will continue to be a priority here, and the chainsaws, safety equipment, and

maintenance tools purchased with Burly Club dona-

tions will be used here at St. Dor-othy’s and at the

Bishop’s Ranch to reduce the fuel load, improve trails, and rid the Ranch of noxious/invasive species.

We welcome into Burliness: Tim Fox, The Rev. Catie Green, Ri-ley Hatch, Richard Kemink, Scott Rhoades, and Bill Slocomb.
