ANNOUNCEMENTS

We had a very moving and well-attended Noche de César Chávez event last Friday. In addition to the opportunity to share “comida y conversación,” Chiara Arroyo and Colleen Londoño presented a slide show about the annual Edison César Chávez service project assisting Corazon de Vida orphanages. They showed photos from the trip that approximately 50 Edison families took earlier this month to deliver supplies and visit the children at the orphanage and spoke about the visits that college students from Corazon de Vida have made to Edison. Jacqueline Fuentes and our 2

nd grade teachers and students shared an amazing concert that brought

down the house! A combination of some original text created by the students and set to music, and a collection of meaningful songs, culminating with Somos Americanos and the students holding up flags of the Americas and the UFW flag created an emotional and beautiful program – with two encores! Thank you Maestras Fuentes, Jimenez, Melendez and Martinez. The 2

nd grade songwriting residency was made

This week we are preparing for our annual production of the 5th

Grade Play. The play, Cambia Todo Cambia, shows the power of theater over the ages – from ancient mythology and fables, through Shakespeare, to the Diary of Anne Frank. Things Change is inspired in the ever-evolving history of humankind and its theatre. By re-telling these tales on stage, our students can appreciate the dilemmas of extraordinary characters and the eras they lived in. As the 5

th graders’ time to bid farewell to Edison

approaches, more than ever, the musical theme of the play reflects on the natural process we all go through in which everything changes. We are grateful to PS Arts and the support of SMMEF which makes Edison’s 30-week K-5 Theater program possible. Edison is fortunate to have had this program and our wonderful theater arts teacher Martha Ramirez Oropeza for over 10 years. Theater classes are conducted entirely in Spanish and provide our students with another way to grow their Spanish language arts skills, and develop public speaking skills and self-confidence. Thank you also to parents Pilar Guzman (producer) and Annie Dunn (costumes) for their important work on the play. Please come join us for the Thursday evening, March 26 performance from 6:30-8:30 pm. in the Edison cafetorium.

Social Dynamics: Developing & Facilitating Social Skills in your Child -- Bobby Verdugo, LCSW of the UCLA School Function Program will be presenting this workshop for Edison parents on Wednesday, March 25 at 8:30 am in Room 208.

School Smarts Academy continues on Monday mornings at 8:30 am and Reflective Parenting Class (in Spanish) continues on Tues. mornings at 8:45 am.

Special Site Council Meeting – Friday, March 27 at 4:00 pm.

Edison Jogathon – Wednesday, March 25 is the deadline to turn in Jogathon pledges and qualify for prizes. –including very cool jogathon t-shirts featuring the Edison Eagle and the grand prize limo lunch!

Menchies Fundraiser – When you visit Menchies Frozen Yogurt on Ocean Park between March 20-31 and mention this Edison fundraiser, a percentage of your purchase goes to the Edison PTA.

Thank you Edison ELAC! – Deep appreciation to the Edison ELAC, especially Vice-President Magali Giovanini and Consuelo Perez and Sofia Ramirez who pulled together a delicious dinner for Noche de César Chávez in record time -- tamales, pupusas, arroz, frijoles, aguas frescas y postres! Not only did we all enjoy fellowship and great food but the proceeds from the food sale netted about $500.00 for the PTA and SMMEF.

SMMEF Announces Spring Fundraisers –Nearly 32% of Edison families have now made a direct donation to SMMEF (supporting instructional assistants, literacy coach, K-5 Theater and K-2 Music programs, and professional development for our teachers). Won’t you join the 107 Edison families who have contributed so far? Also Sunday, April 26 from 10:00 am to 2:00 p.m. SMMEF is hosting a second annual private Pier Party at Pacific Park. Tuvimos un conmovedor y bien asistido evento de Noche de César Chávez el viernes pasado. En adición a la oportunidad de compartir “comida y conversación,” Chiara Arroyo y Colleen Londoño presentaron una presentación de fotos sobre el proyecto anual de servicio de César Chávez de Edison asistiendo a los orfelinatos de Corazón de vida. Mostraron fotos del paseo que aproximadamente 50 familias de Edison tomaron a principios de este mes para entregar los materiales y visitar a los niños en el orfelinato y hablaros sobre las visitas que los estudiantes en la universidad de Corazón de Vida han hecho a Edison. ¡Jacqueline Fuentes y nuestras maestras de 2º grado y los estudiantes compartieron un concierto sorprendente que “tumbó la casa”! ¡Una combinación de algunos textos originales creados por estudiantes y puestos a música, y una colección de canciones significantes, culminando con Somos Americanos y los estudiantes mostrando banderas de las Américas y la bandera de UFW crearon un programa emocional y hermoso – con dos repeticiones! La obra, Cambia Todo Cambia, demuestra el poder del teatro a través de los tiempos – desde la mitología antigua y las

fábulas, hasta Shakespeare, al Diario de Anne Frank. Este cambio es

inspirado en la continuamente evolucionando historia de la humanidad y su

teatro. Al re-contar los cuentos en el escenario, nuestros estudiantes pueden

apreciar los dilemas de los personajes extraordinarios y las eras en las

cuales vivieron. Mientras se acerca el tiempo de la despedida de los

estudiantes del 5º grado, más que nunca, el tema musical de la obra refleja

sobre el proceso natural que todos pasamos cuando todo cambia. Estamos

agradecidos con PS Arts y el apoyo de SMMEF los cuales hacen posible el

programa de teatro de 30 semanas para los estudiantes de K – 5 grado.

Edison es afortunada de tener este programa y a nuestra maravillosa maestra

de artes de teatro Martha Ramírez Oropeza por más de 10 años. Las clases

de teatro son conducidas completamente en español y les provee a nuestros

estudiantes con otra manera de aumentar sus habilidades del Idioma

Español, y desarrollar habilidades de hablar en público y confianza propia.

Gracias también a las mamás Pilar Guzman (productora) y Annie Dunn

(vestuario) por su trabajo importante en la obra. Por favor vengan y

acompáñenos el jueves, 26 de marzo, para la presentación de 6:30 – 8:30

Dinámicas Sociales: Desarrollando y Facilitando Habilidades Sociales en su hijo/a–Bobby Verdugo, LCSW del Programa de Funciones Escolares de UCLA estará presentando este taller para los padres de Edison el miércoles, 25 de marzo a las 8:30 a.m. en el salón 208.

Academia de Inteligencias Escolares –Continúa los lunes por las mañanas a las 8:30 am y la Clase de Reflexiones para Padres (en español) continúa los martes por las mañanas a las 8:45 am.

Dear Edison Families of Students in Kindergarten Through Grade 4: If you are planning to have your child or children continue to attend Edison next year, please fill out and return the form below by next Friday, April 18th. That may sound like a lot of time, but it’s actually only the Friday after we return from Spring Break. Getting an accurate count of projected enrollment for next year affects the number of teachers that SMMUSD authorizes for our school and the way that we configure classes (i.e., how many classes we need and at what grades). So your response helps us make the best plans for our students. I appreciate your candor and will treat your response as confidential in case you have not yet told your child about an upcoming move. For families who reside within the SMMUSD, returning the attachment below is enough for your child to continue at Edison. You do not need to renew an intra-district permit if you live outside the immediate Edison neighborhood. When you enrolled at Edison, we became your home school. For families who do not live in the SMMUSD and whose child/children are attending Edison with an interdistrict attendance permit, there are April 18. Second, you do not need to reapply for an interdistrict permit through your home district, but you must return a Verification of Continuing Enrollment to SMMUSD. These forms have already been sent to families with children attending on permit and are due to SMMUSD by June 1, 2015. If you have misplaced the form, you can get another on the district website (www.smmusd.org) . Go to Quick Links, Permits and then print, sign and return. If you do not have access to the Internet, our community liaison Yoly Gutierrez can help you (310) 828-0335, ext. 61-307. If you are enrolling a sibling in Kindergarten and live outside of SMMUSD or if you used to reside in SMMUSD but have moved outside the district, you will have to apply to your district of residence for an exit permit and fill out a permit application with SMMUSD. Estimadas Familias de Edison de Estudiantes en los Grados Kindergarten hasta 4º:

Si ustedes están planeando que sus hijos continúen asistiendo a Edison el próximo año, por favor complete y

entregue la forma de abajo a más tardar el próximo viernes, 18 de abril. Eso parece ser mucho tiempo,

pero es actualmente el primer viernes después de que regresamos de las Vacaciones de Primavera.

Consiguiendo una cuenta exacta de la registración para el próximo año afecta la cantidad de maestros que

SMMUSD autorizará para nuestra escuela y la manera en la cual configuramos las clases (por ejemplo, cuántas

clases necesitaremos y qué grados). Así es que su respuesta nos ayuda hacer mejores planes para nuestros

estudiantes. Yo les agradezco su sinceridad y trataré sus respuestas con confidencialidad en caso que ustedes

aún no les hayan dicho a sus hijos sobre una mudanza que se acerque.

Changes to the Edison PTA Bylaws

1. New school address.

2. Added two new Vice President positions:

a. Vice President of Vision for Student Success

b. Vice President of Director Room Representatives

3. Changed “Chairman” to “Chairperson” throughout bylaws in

order to make references gender neutral.

4. Updated Standing Rules to accurately reflect current duties of

each of our Vice Presidents.

5. Combined corresponding secretary position with recording

secretary position. Edison only has one secretary position.

6. Change Membership and Communications to one standing

committee rather than the two reflected in the old bylaws.

Cambios a los Estatutos de la PTA de Edison

1. Nueva dirección de la escuela.

2. Se agregaron dos nuevos Puestos para Vice Presidentes:

a. Vice-Presidenta/e de Visión para el Éxito Estudiantil

b. Vice-Presidenta/e de Director/a de Representantes de Salón

3. Se cambió “Chairman” a “Chairperson” en todos los estatutos para

hacer que apliquen la referencias a cualquier género.

4. Se actualizaron las Reglas Permanentes para reflejar correctamente

los deberes actuales de cada uno/a de nuestros/as Vice-

Presidentes/as.

5. Se combinó la posición de secretario/a correspondiente con la

posición de secretario/a de actas. Edison sólamente tiene una

posición de secretario/a.

6. Se combinó a Membrecía y Comunicaciones en un comité

permanente en vez de los dos como estaban reflejados en los

estatutos anteriores.

7. La posición de cuarto Vice-Presidente/a, Director/a de Educación

Especial se cambió a Director/a de Eventos Especiales.

8. El Concilio Estatal PTA agregó nuevos artículos a la sección de las

Reglas Permanentes para requistos fiscales.

The PTA has asked the Kinder Committee to help with Desserts and Drinks for this Thursday's fifth grade Play. So we are reaching out to our fellow Kinder parents to ask you to donate a baked good to have a bake sale, plus some aguas frescas to sell at the event. As always you are welcome to borrow the PTA drink jugs to bring your aguas frescas from home the night of the event. Queridos padres del Kinder,

ENROLLMENT INFORMATION: Grade level is determined by the grade the student will enter in August 2015. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning March 23, 2015. Classes are offered subject to enrollment and are limited to 20-25 students. Confirmation of classes will be sent to the student’s home address. Enrollment continues as long as space is available. NOTE: Unless enrolled, children may not visit classes as a guest. FEES: Tuition for the full program is $525 per child (or $500 if you register by April 17). Some classes have a materials fee in addition to the tuition that is non-refundable and non-transferable after May 30. ALL FEES MUST BE PAID BY JUNE 9. PRIMARY OCEANOGRAPHY #30 Grades 1-2 This very popular class is back for another year! Taught by a team of three experienced primary teachers, this course is an in-depth study of sea life. Students will attend research trips to the library and the Santa Monica Pier and even have visits from real marine scientists, all in order to gather knowledge and have hands-on experiences with sea life. Students will be encouraged to apply their knowledge of sea life in a variety of activities: sea life stories, sea life riddles, pop-up books, and under-the-sea murals, just to name a few! I (we) hereby forever waive, release, and discharge SMMEF, SMMPTA, SMMUSD, California State PTA (collectively, the “Released Organizations”), and any or all of their directors, officers, members, trustees, agents, employees, volunteers, any and all participants, owners, lessors and operators of the premises, and each of them, from all liability, claims, causes of action, demands for any damage, losses or injury to the student, the student’s property, or parent’s property of any kind or nature (collectively “liability”), arising out of participation in, or attendance at, the Program, and/or the employees of said organizations, including but not limited to losses caused by the passive or active negligence of the Released Organizations, and/or the employees of said organizations; provided, however, this waiver, release and discharge shall not apply to liability that arises from the gross negligence or willful misconduct of the Released Organizations.

EXTENDED DAY CHILD CARE FOR CHILDREN ATTENDING THE 2015 PTA SUMMER ADVENTURE PROGRAM

Child Development Services will offer child care to all students attending The PTA Summer Adventure Program will be in Room 18 at Franklin Elementary, in Room (TBA) at Point Dum Elementary and in Bungalow 407 at Will Rogers Learning Academy. Child care will be open from 7:00-8:30a.m. and from 12:30-6:00p.m. every day of the program, beginning Monday, June 16 – Friday , July 17. (Child care will be CLOSED on Friday, July 3th). The child care program includes the following activities: arts and crafts, weekly trips to swimming pool, local trips, and enriching indoor and outdoor activities. Enrollment will be on a first- come, first- served basis, determined by the date your child’s registration is received. You may choose from these three enrollment options:

PARENT/GUARDIAN’S APPROVAL AND STUDENT WAIVER

____________________________________ has my (our) permission to participate in the SUMMER ADVENTURE program (the “Program”), sponsored by the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation (“SMMEF”) and the Santa Monica-Malibu Council of PTAs (“SMMPTA”), from June 15 to July 17, 2015, at Will Rogers Learning Community from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily.

In consideration for my (our) child’s participation in the Program, I (we) assume all risks in connection with the child’s participation in the Program and agree to indemnify and hold harmless SMMEF, SMMPTA and the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (“SMMUSD”) from any claims and liabilities arising out of my (our) child’s participation in the Program.

I (we) hereby forever waive, release, and discharge SMMEF, SMMPTA, SMMUSD, California State PTA (collectively, the “Released Organizations”), and any or all of their directors, officers, members, trustees, agents, employees, volunteers, any and all participants, owners, lessors and operators of the premises, and each of them, from all liability, claims, causes of action, demands for any damage, losses or injury to the student, the student’s property, or parent’s property of any kind or nature (collectively “liability”), arising out of participation in, or attendance at, the Program, and/or the employees of said organizations, including but not limited to losses caused by the passive or active negligence of the Released Organizations, and/or the employees of said organizations; provided, however, this waiver, release and discharge shall not apply to liability that arises from the gross negligence or willful misconduct of the Released Organizations.

I do hereby certify that to the best of my (our) knowledge and belief, my (our) child is in good health.

In case of illness or accident, permission is granted for emergency treatment to be administered. It is further understood and agreed that the undersigned will assume full responsibility for any such action, including payment of costs.

I (we) hereby advise that the above-named child has had the following allergies or medicine reaction(s) which could limit participation, or unusual physical condition(s) which have been made known to a treating physician and may limit participation (if none, please write the word “NONE”):

Field Trip and Permission The Extended Summer Day Care Program may include field trips and/or walking excursions. Date, time of departure/return, method of transportation and destination will be posted. The method of transportation for these will be school district buses or the Santa Monica ! Big Blue Bus. " I understand that my child is to accept all rules and requirements governing conduct during each field trip or excursion. Pursuant to provisions of Education Code 35330. I hereby release the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District from all liability arising out of or in connection with the Extended Day Care Summer Program field trips. Child Development Services

EXTENDED DAY CHILD CARE FOR CHILDREN ATTENDING THE 2015 PTA SUMMER ADVENTURE PROGRAM

Child Development Services will offer child care to all students attending The PTA Summer Adventure Program will be in Room 18 at Franklin Elementary, in Room (TBA) at Point Dum Elementary and in Bungalow 407 at Will Rogers Learning Academy. Child care will be open from 7:00-8:30a.m. and from 12:30-6:00p.m. every day of the program, beginning Monday, June 16 – Friday , July 17. (Child care will be CLOSED on Friday, July 3th). The child care program includes the following activities: arts and crafts, weekly trips to swimming pool, local trips, and enriching indoor and outdoor activities. Enrollment will be on a first- come, first- served basis, determined by the date your child’s registration is received. You may choose from these three enrollment options:

Morning Only (7:00-8:30 a.m.) $180.00 Afternoon Only (12:30-6:00 p.m.) $645.00 Morning & Afternoon $820.00

There is a $50.00 non-refundable registration fee for all children who have not enrolled or re-enrolled in School Age Programs for the 15/16
