E.O. Smith High School offers students a wide breadth of education to prepare them for the future. We host active academic departments, an agricultural training program, and a number of student clubs and extra-curricular activities. Our Library Media Center and computer labs reinforce and enhance our education programs. We have a sports program - our mascot is the Panther - and an active alumni community. We encourage our students to develop the motivation and capacity for lifelong learning.

Welcome to E.O. Smith!

EOS students come together to make up a multi-dimensional and dynamic student body. They arrive at E.O. Smith from all over the area – Ashford, Mansfield, Willington, Columbia, Coventry and Windham – and they bring with them unique backgrounds, interests and passions. This unique assembly of talented individuals create a school culture that supports the individual as well as the collective school community.

From offerings in academics and the arts, to athletics, and leadership, there are many opportunities for our students to pursue a passion and excel. We are diligent in providing experiences to our students which lay the foundation for them to display their talents here at E.O. before sharing them on a national stage.

Students who attend EOS are among the most inquisitive and creative students I’ve ever met, and they take advantage of everything we have to offer. The result? Success in their pursuits in life.

❝When you come to EO Smith, you become part of the family. We’ve assembled many of the best teachers and coaches in the area, and we’ve put together a terrific support staff and guidance department to help you find your path to success.”Principal Lou DeLoreto

◗ ACADEMICS

6 E D W I N O . S M I T H H I G H S C H O O L

We strive to provide unique opportunities for our students to excel in their academic pursuits. Our proximity to and partnership with the University of Connecticut allows students to take courses on the nearby university campus.

EnglishThe English curriculum reflects the importance of sound language preparation to meet the demands of college and vocational preparation, as well as daily life and leisure in a world dependent upon rapid and effective communications. There’s an emphasis on developing strong reading, writing, speaking, thinking, and study skills. The program recognizes the responsibility of helping students develop into informed, mature human beings. Students also have opportunities for personal and creative expression.

MathematicsMathematics is critically important in a rapidly changing and technologically oriented world. In this program, every student learns to apply critical thinking skills in solving problems of everyday

life, compete in the high-performance workplace, develop connections among topics both within mathematics and between disciplines, and acquire an appreciation for the beauty and intrinsic order of mathematics. The program teaches the value of mathematics, and encourages student confidence in his or her own ability to become mathematical problem solvers, communicate mathematically, and reason mathematically.

Library Media CenterThe Library Media Center collection of instructional materials is designed to enrich curriculums, meet students’ interests and needs, support reading literacy and promote inquiry using a wide range of informational formats. Teachers and students are encouraged to meet and collaborate with librarians, to brainstorm topic ideas, ask questions, and jointly investigate any research question - sharing in the discovery process.

Music & ArtsThe music department provides students a means for self-expression and an appreciation of music, and can also prepared them for careers in music-related fields. Classes are offered to students with a variety of skills and are adapted for youngsters with special needs. As a critical part of discovering who we are, the arts and art classes encourage a high level of creativity, discipline, and performance skills, as well as an understanding of the connections between the arts, other disciplines and daily life.

ScienceThe science program of studies emphasizes student skill development in areas related to problem solving, creative thinking and analytic thought. Our focus is to gain a deeper understanding of the nature of scientific thought and activity. Laboratory study includes exploration through inquiry, making models, prediction and analysis of natural phenomena. Students are expected to have an understanding of the processes as well as the laws and theories of science.

Social StudiesThe social studies curriculum is designed to prepare students to participate effectively in a democratic society. Through a challenging learning environment that responds to changes in the school, national and global community, students gain knowledge and skills with which they can grow as individuals, adapt to an interdependent and changing world, and value differences among individuals and cultures.

Agri-Science and TechnologyThis program encompasses four areas of agricultural education: Animal Science, Plant Science, Natural Resources, and Agriculture Engineering. During the first year, students explore all four before focusing on one of those for the remainder of their high school career. The agri-science program applies academic rigor to a hands-on approach to learning, setting students up for success in both college and career, and offers the opportunity to earn professional certification in more than 20 disciplines.

Health and Physical EducationThe goal of Physical Education is to have students leave E.O. Smith with the skills and knowledge necessary to participate in a variety of physical activities, to maintain a healthy lifestyle, to understand the various effects of physical activity on one’s mind and body, and to develop interpersonal skills, and exhibit positive character traits during physical activity.

World LanguagesThe World Languages Department follows the national standards for Foreign Language Learning and fosters a knowledge and understanding of other cultures. Students can learn to speak in French, German, Latin or Spanish and can participate in multilingual communities.

The Depot CampusThe Depot Campus follows a philosophy of educating “one student at time,” providing a non-traditional education for students who need a smaller and more personalized instructional setting. Learning is grounded in authentic "real world" internship experiences and individualized learning plans are derived from students’ interests. Students stay with the same teacher/advisor for the entirety of their high school experience and, instead

of traditional grades, students are expected to demonstrate their mastery of specific learning goals through exhibitions, portfolios and public presentations. Students are evaluated on their work by their entire educational team, and the advisor writes an in-depth narrative report each quarter.

Career and TechnicalThe Career and Technical curriculum encourages students to explore careers in technical fields such as computer graphic production, technology, marketing, accounting, computers, video production, engineering, allied health, teaching, law, business administration, CAD, architecture, culinary arts, child development and human development. The program provides training and support for students in business law, technical and personal skills.
