No distracting designs or words are permitted. Girls: Hair must be clean and well groomed, out of the eyes. NO EXTREME colors or highlights. Per this policy, long hair for boys is not permitted (past the shirt collar) and mohawks are considered distracting designs. Spring Break is a good time to take care of issues like these. If you have any questions regarding this policy, please let me know. Congratulations to all of our students who have participated in Confirmation and who will be participating in First Communion! The entire St. Nicholas School community is with you in thoughts and prayers as you celebrate these wonderful milestones in your walk with Christ. PLEASE KEEP READING, THERE IS MORE!!

April 16, 2014 Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s), Here is a look at important dates coming up:

Friday, April 18-Friday, April 25 – Spring Break, school resumes Monday, April 28 Thursday, May 1 – School Belles uniform fitting 2:45-4:00

School Curriculum Night 7:00pm Enrollment for the 2014-2015 school year is ongoing! If there are any families that are currently attending St. Nicholas Academy who plan to return next year and have not registered, you need to do so ASAP! There are some classes, including Kindergarten, that are at or close to capacity! I encourage you all to get your registrations in immediately!!

Progress Reports for the 3rd Trimester will came home YESTERDAY! Please make sure to get those signed and returned to school by tomorrow. I would like to make sure to advise everyone to check the Student Handbook regarding the Uniform Code and HAIRSTYLES. There have been a few students - mainly boys - pointed out to me that are very much “riding the line” per the policy this year. The policy on page 11 states:

HAIR: Boys: Hair must be clean and well groomed, out of the eyes. NO EXTREME colors or highlights. Hair must be trimmed above shirt collar.

On another Handbook note – I have seen a lot of phones and other devices in my office lately. We have a policy of the use of phones and other electronic devices that is on page 26. Students are not allowed to use phones and other electronic devices during the school day – this includes before school in the cafeteria! Phones and devices will be confiscated and – most of the time – returned to the student at the end of the school day. If it is a constant and habitual issue, the device will be confiscated and held until a parent/guardian can come and pick it up OR be held until the end of the school year. I highly caution anyone that brings these types of items to school. St. Nicholas Academy is not responsible if any of these items is lost or becomes missing. Each family is receiving an order form for uniforms for next school year. Please make sure to use our school code when ordering so you get the correct colors and plaid on our uniform items. School Belles is also having a sale at this time – more information can be found here: http://www.schoolbelles.com/pdf/AprilSale2014.pdf. FYI – this is from the Archdiocese of Cincinnati: All persons who have attended a VIRTUS® Protecting God’s Children Training Session must keep up with the continuing education component of VIRTUS® by reading all monthly VIRTUS® Training Bulletins. If a person falls behind by three or more Bulletins (whether in consecutive months or not) he / she must “catch up.” If the same person does catch up, but then falls behind by three or more Bulletins a second time, the cleric, employee or volunteer will need to attend another VIRTUS® live Training Session before he / she can have further contact with children. The Office of Safe Environment will send out reminder e-mails on or about May 1, 2014 and again on or about June 1, 2014 to all persons who are three or more VIRTUS® Bulletins behind asking them to “catch up” with their reading. All persons who are still behind by three or more Bulletins as of July 1, 2014 will be suspended in VIRTUS®. No suspended person can have any contact with children until after he / she attends a new VIRTUS® live Training Session, has his / her VIRTUS® User Account reactivated, and then “catches up” with all previously unread Bulletins. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish each of you a blessed and happy Easter! Enjoy the time with friends and family and celebrate the resurrection of our Lord! Also make sure to remember the days leading up to Easter – Holy Thursday and Good Friday. While Easter is a wonderful celebration, our Lord suffered greatly leading up to his crucifixion and we should be thankful for his suffering for our sins. I hope you have a good rest of your Lenten experience and a good Spring Break next week. We’ll see you back at school on April 28 rested and ready for a strong finish to the school year. Thanks for all you do!

Mr. Fightmaster

Lenten Snapshot #2 Dear Jason,

The United Nations has designated March 22nd as World Water Day. For those living in extreme poverty, including the students and families our Sisters serve in Africa, every day is a struggle for clean water.

This Lenten Snapshot focuses on the plight of orphans our Sisters care for in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

At our Congolese missions, older orphans help care for smaller children. All the children — even those as young as three or four — participate in the never-ending challenge of procuring food and clean water. In the Congo, if a child does not work, that child does not eat. It's as stark and dire as that. In the harsh climate and collapsed economy of the Congo, older children work in the fields and gardens, while the younger ones haul water and prepare juice to sell in exchange for food.

Our Sisters teach the children how to take charge of their lives and become creative, resilient

members of society.

It is difficult to grasp that three-year-olds must work for food. Toddlers head off into fields to pick corn and walk long distances with buckets of water. This is the harsh reality of impoverished people all over the world. Orphans and abandoned children, all too common in war-torn areas of Congo, are especially vulnerable. Without our Sisters, whom many orphans call "Mama," hundreds of children would be languishing.

Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur have been caring for orphans since our foundress Julie Billiart rescued abandoned street children at the close of the French Revolution. Today, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, our Sisters shelter, feed, care for and protect orphans. The first five years of life are perilous for any impoverished child, but they are especially so for impoverished Congolese children. Access to clean water and ample food helps create a supporting environment for the care of these children.

We are most grateful for your support in helping our Sisters care for, educate and provide clean water to their students in Africa, especially Congo, during this Lenten season.
