INTRODUCTION
„‟My community My Commitment (Exploring the sense of environmental and community
engagement as future designer)‟‟ is an environmental- community related issue in our
local community project. The issue have to be genuine and any solution provided must
have an impact to the environment and community.
In a group of 10, we explored the understanding of sustainability ( environment and
community engagement ) and our role and responsibility as a designer, reflected
throughout the execution of this project. Therefore, in participating in this project we are
asked to engage with the theme and embrace, examine and reflect on the notions of
community as its active member. Though interactive and dynamics exercises, we
gained a deeper understanding of environment and our responsibility to community,
practice solving real –world challenges using creative ideas.

INTRODUCTION TO SITE
Good Samaritan Home Founded in January 1999 by Albert Ong a former pastor and YM his wife, Good Samaritan Home (GSH)
cares for the children such as these-who come from families where parents have abandoned them, or
where a parent is unable to cope with the divorce, or where the child has lost one or both parents.
GSH today is a home to 30 boys and girl whose age ranges from 1-22 years old. The home seeks to not
only provide for their physical and material needs, but also to minister to their emotional and
psychological needs especially in the light of their broken family backgrounds.

PROJECT STATEMENT
Good Samaritan Home ( GSH) is an orphanage with 36 orphans (aged ranged from 3 to
17 years old), who came from families where parents have abandoned them, or where a
parent unable to cope with divorce, or where the child has lost one or both parents. In
addition, pets such as dog, rabbits and goose donated by donors served as
entertainments for the orphans, were placed at the main entrance of the orphanage.
The first sight when we arrived at Good Samaritan Home was the untidiness of the
garden occupied with unwanted old boxes, crates and pots and also a dog shelter which
was in terrible condition. After having brief conversation and interview with Mr. Robert,
he led us into the house and showed us around. The condition in the house was still
acceptable without much spaces left for improvements or enhancement and the
furniture was still in good condition. Whereas, the garden and the dog shelter located at
the main entrance was a bit chaotic in terms of arrangement and tidiness.
From what we have observed, right next to the entrance of the orphanage was a small
garden planted with various type of herb plant and trees. Kind- hearted donors donated
herb plants which were fenced by Panasonic Company two years ago and formed a
neat garden. However as time goes by, the garden looked messy because of the fallen
leaves with broken pots and unwanted polystyrene boxes abandoned right behind the
fencing. We also have interviewed an orphan named James (aged 13) and noticed that
the children often play with the dog (Breed=Golden Retriever) named Golden sheltered
right beside the small garden formed using old steel bed frames which is mostly rusted.
After a discussion among our group members, we have come out with a few ideas of
improving the current condition of the orphanage. Due to space limitation, we concluded
that we could not do much with the interior spaces or by adding more furniture to
improve the space quality of the orphanage as the existing furniture is still in good
condition. Moreover since the garden is created and sponsored by Panasonic Company,
we are not allowed to make changes to the garden. However, we could help to
rearrange and clean up the garden. Besides, we decided to design a sustainable shelter
for the dog Golden. While cleaning up the garden and installing the dog shelter, we
would be involving children as well to promote environmental awareness and attitudes
and educating them on the importance of greenery which is crucial for the future as well
as some installation techniques which might benefit them in the future. Another
community aspect is to involve children in t-shirt design while interacting with the
children and promote environmental awareness among themselves, this activity benefits
them by initiating their creativity in deigning as well.

Problem:
The dog shelter is located at right next to the entrance of the orphanage home to
accommodate the house pet, Golden (breed=Golden Retriever). The dog shelter which
is formed using old steel bed frames that are mostly rusted is unfit to shelter a dog
despite it being a fairly large space where much improvements can be potentially made.
The fencing only covers up both sides of the space leaving the front and back exposed
which may cause unwanted consequences in the long run. In addition, the roof covering
is barely enough to shade the pet under sunny day not to mention during rainy days.

Problem:
The garden along the entrance of the house has become a major eyesore to visitors.
Unwanted broken pots, crates and polystyrene boxes abandoned right behind the
fencing are accumulated around the area in addition to the already messy and
unmaintained garden causing the compound to be susceptible AEDES breeding
from the stagnant water.

DESIGN PROPOSAL
1. Shelter for dog
The purpose of the design is to provide a sustainable shelter for the dog. The
materials proposed are unwanted Meranti Woods donated by wood factory as the
ventilated wall with screw joinings; Polycarbonate sheet as the roof covering and
concrete for its footings at all sides (sponsored cement and sand). The design will be
2160mm in length, 1635mm in width and 1350mm in height.

After cleaning and beautifying process, the garden looks tidier. In addition, new design

ACTIVITIES
1. T- Shirt Designing to promote creativity
As a architecture students, we would like to promote creativity skill. To do so, we
had T-shirt designing to enhance the creativity of the children. Meanwhile, T-shirt
designing is a gift from us to the children.

SUSTAINABILITY, COMMUNITY & DESIGN
Material used:
1.Timber – Meranti Wood
For the timber life cycle, it started from the forestry. Trees are being cut and transport to
sawmill. The timber will be process by the wood industry and cut into the sizes
according to the customer‟s requirement. The timber are varying used. It can be used
for residential and industries. Timber are long lasting and low maintenance are needed.
The unwanted timber can be recycle to produce recycle paper and plywood.

CARBON FOOTPRINT: Economically reduce the carbon footprint and environmental impacts of buildings by using more timber and wood products in our dog shelter design. We timber that we used is Meranti Wood. It has lower carbon and environmental impacts than comparable building materials and it also produce lower energy and lower impact process. In addition, timber also provides simple solutions that meet regulatory requirements. Timber in building reduces carbon emissions in three ways. The carbon stored in growing trees is retained and stored in the timber for at least the life of the building. Using wood instead of energy intensive, materials avoids the emissions associated with producing those materials and increased timber use supports the economic expansion of forests through the landscape. Forests are significant carbon sinks. Total life cycle greenhouse gas emission savings gained from preferring timber in building can be as high as 28%.
2. Plastic –Polycarbonate
For the plastic life cycle, it started from the processing of raw materials. The raw
materials are being process and package by the factory. Its product are then being
distribute to the market. The product used will be sent to landfill or recycle. Lastly, the
recycle plastics will either used it as a new recycle products or being process again
through the life cycle.

The single most important factor in reducing the impact of embodied energy is to design long life,
durable and adaptable buildings.
The graph below, based on CSIRO research, shows levels of embodied energy for materials
used in the average Australian house.

Materials with the lowest embodied energy, such as concrete, bricks and timber, are usually
consumed in large quantities which we used as the footing and the structure of the dog shelter.
Materials with high energy that we used for the dog shelter which is polycarbonate (plastic) is
used in much smaller amounts.

GBI ASSESSMENT:
There are six criteria in Green Building Index (GBI) Assessment: Energy Efficiency
(EE), Indoor Environment (EQ), Sustainable Site Planning and Management (SM) ,
Materials and Resources (MR), Water Efficient (WE) and Innovation. From this project,
we had fulfilled the criteria of Innovation by designing a dog shelter with reuse timber
that provided by a wood factory. In addition, we fulfilled the criteria of energy efficiency
by including natural lighting and ventilation into the design of dog shelter. Also, the
material chosen for the dog shelter design according to the criteria of Materials and
Resources which are long lasting and low maintenance.

CONCLUSION
This project required us to identify an environmental-community related issue in our
chosen site. We need to provide solutions according to the issue with bringing positive
impact to the environment and community. Our chosen site is Good Samaritan House
which located in Klang. It‟s an orphanage house with total of 26 orphanages.
The main issue in the orphanage house is the environment. The garden which just
located outside the house is messy. The unwanted boxes and flowers pots are placed
unorganized that lead to water accumulation. This creates an unhealthy environment to
the kids as many mosquitos can be produced. Besides, messy garden is also a major
eyesore to the visitors when people enter the house. To solve this issue, we worked as
a team with some kids to clean and beautify the garden.
The dog house that located in the garden area was built by weak and rust fencing with a
roof covered barely enough to provide shading and rain. We noticed that the kids like to
walk around the dog house area and play with the dog. Incident might be happened if
the kids didn‟t pay attention when they are playing. To solve this issue, we decided to
rebuild the dog house to ensure the kids‟ safety.
For the garden, we focus on provide a clean and healthier environment. We had cut the
overgrown plants, replant the plants in the new flower pot, collect and classified the
unwanted boxes and rubbish and also tidy up the garden area. The kids helped us
during the process of cleaning up garden. The kids are seldom having the opportunity to
do cleaning and thus, we included them in to let them have the experience of garden
cleaning.
For the dog house, we used sponsored meranti wood to replace the old fencing and
used polycarbonate for the roof. We designed the dog house in a way that can protect
the dog from sun and rain. We chosen the wood to build the dog house were because
wood can provide cooling effect and it is harder and long lasting. We put on shellac to
protect the wood against mould growth, provide resistant to UV ray and weather, and
prevent it from cracking when exposed to weather. We used the UV polycarbonate as it
can filter the UV ray and hotness into the interior. This dog house will be low
maintenance and it is long lasting. It can act to beautify the garden besides than provide
proper shade to the dog. It did not bring negative impact to the environment.

Aside from environmental-community, we got included activities with the kids. We were
happy to get about 20 kids to join us for the activities. First, which was our main activity
was teach the kids to make their own shirt design by putting on the painting. They are
required to draw a tree with brush or their own hand. Through this activity, we can see
that how creative are the kids and their beautiful mind. They draw out the tress that they
like and other elements that represent themselves, for examples, their names, the
words “Good Samaritan Home”, the smiley face and etc. The whole activities are happy
and we also take this opportunity to understand more about them. Next, we have the
games session. The kids are so happy to have this game session. At the end, the kids
teach us the games that they always play.
Lastly, we have group photo session taking with the shirt that they had made.
Some of the kids kept find opportunity to talk with our group members. They kept said
“bye bye” to us the moment when we wanted to leave. We know each other even more
compared to the previous garden cleaning and rebuilding of dog house. We appreciated
the help and the participation from the kids.
In short, through this project we have the opportunity to work with the community
by using our creativities and knowledge about the environmental sustainability. Besides,
this project helps to increase our awareness of current environmental issues locally and
learnt the importance of creating environmentally sustainable product or services. We
are able to communicate with people and work in a team. Lastly, this project had bring
us joy, fun, passion and love.

FEEDBACK
Ronn Chua Chang Yeong:
It has been such an interesting experience running this environmental-community
service. Even though it was a long and challenging task, we finally completed the task
satisfyingly at the end. From this project, I learnt to be a better person in caring the
community and environment. In a team, I learnt to communicate with my group mate
and able to learn from their creativity and discipline while planning the tasks. As an
architecture students, we are able to solve the problems and improve the community
with our architectural skills. I am happy with my team and we wish to visit to the
orphanage home again.
Chia Wee Min:
Through this project, I have learnt to stand in client‟s place to discover the problems
faced and solve the problems with consideration to solve the problems in a long term
plan by determine the choices of material used, ways to solve the problems in an
effective way and to consider it as long term planning to solve the problems.
Eelyn Cheong Siew Ying:
In this project, the most unforgettable moment is the smiles of the children when we
play and have fun with them. After interact with the kids in the home, I understand and
realized that being happy doesn‟t mean that everything is perfect. It means that you
have decided to look beyond the imperfections. We need to appreciate what we have
before time forces us to appreciate what we had.
Teoh Hui Yu:
Through this project, I had learn the importance of environmental sustainability. A
product or services that we design should be environment sustainable and brings
positive impact to our environment and community. Next, I learnt that group work is very
important. Without a proper group work, we could not finished this project perfectly.
Lastly, is the passionate that we should have. At the end when we saw the final product,
which built by ourselves, the happiness was indescribable.

Vicky Lee Wei Kee:
I personally gained a lot from this project which greatly involves community services, for
instance giving back to the community (orphanage) and learnt to serve the community
with love and care while incorporating all the knowledge gained from the module
"Environmental Sustainable Design" together with our own creativity in creating a
sustainable architectural design for the benefits of the community. The satisfaction and
excitement I ever felt when the final product that we designed and constructed with our
own hands for the past few months and finally all our hard work has paid off. I feel so
proud of seeing the structure to be done perfectly, not only it improves the living space
quality of the dog. It was also a wonderful experience to get along and get to know and
understand the circumstances of the orphans while we were organizing activities with
them.
Wong Voon Yin:
Through this project, I am glad that I had the opportunity to participate on community
work for Good Samaritan Home. It help me to open my eyes and heart and become
more aware of the community. I learnt that how important is the integration between
Community, and Environment of designing one product. Through our months of hard
work, I am quite proud of my group and what we've provided to the community and the
environment. The smiles of the children and the moments we have spent together from
this project will always be an unforgettable moments.

Through this project, I have gained a lot of amazing experiences. From the beginning of
project on contributing our sustainable architectural knowledge learnt from Module of
Environmental Sustainable design (ESD) and other subjects to design a dog shelter
until constructed a real shelter for the dog according our design by using reused
materials, the feeling of stratification was deeply felt in our heart. I have learnt to be
grateful to my circumstance when our group having activities with the children and
helping them to improve their environment surrounding. I am very proud to my group
mates who are very creative on the designs and constructed to real things while having
spirit of teamwork to complete our tasks and being caring to the children who are
special in community.

Edwin Ho Khai Vun:
From this project I learn how to be more responsibility of an architect towards
environment and society. Besides, I also learn how to cooperate with each other when
come into group. From planning to doing work and giving back to the society, all these
we need each other‟s people helps and work together to get work done efficiently. Other
than that, I learn how to interact with the orphanage and give more love and care to
them.
Evon Low Siew Cheng:
I feel thankful and lucky for being able to do something for the kids in the orphanage.
This project has given me the opportunity to induce my creativity, to know the
importance of teamwork among group mates, building a doghouse from scratch,
redesign a garden and being able to work with kids.
Jovi Chin:
Throughout the course of this project, I am able to incorporate environmental
sustainability into practice more efficiently. My understanding of the overall concept of
sustainable architecture has been broadened from the environmental footprint to the
embodied energy one design carries. Academic context aside, I am able to understand
our local charity works better from being up close and personal with the association
itself. Being part of the cause, I'm glad that my field of study is able to benefit the
environment the the people living in it.
