Rental of Environmental Equipment

Renting equipment is a smart choice

Our rental equipment fleet includes pumps, water quality meters, samplers, PIDs and remediation equipment. It is probably the largest, with the widest selection of environmental monitoring equipment to hire, in the UK.

Every piece of equipment is field-proven, robust, reliable, accurate and stable. We do everything we can to ensure it reaches you on time and ready to go: clean, calibrated, quality checked, charged and working accurately. We include ‘quick start guides’ to keep you on track and when the equipment is returned we check it again to ensure the quality and accuracy of your results are reliable. We back this up with a very detailed procedure controlled equipment audit where copies of any reports are forwarded to you to verify your research results.

Renting equipment for environmental research is a smart choice. It makes so much sense that more and more consultancies are relying on our rental facilities.

Measuring Water Levels

Diver® - the jewel of level loggers

Diver® level loggers are small, smart and easy to use. Tens of thousands of these data-loggers are in place, worldwide. Each is accurately, reliably and conveniently recording water level, temperature and, if needed, conductivity; 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

This smart, reliable monitoring technology complements our e-Sense range of remote sensingdata-loggers, instruments and modems for the automatic measurement, registration and management of groundwater information.

For complete flexibility Diver® level loggers can be read and programmed onsite or linked to a telemetry system for stress-free remote offsite management. There are various designs available including ceramic Divers for corrosive environments and the option for the measurement of electrical conductivity. Divers are the only instruments in this class to come with a 3 year warranty.

For accurate data, obtained simply and effortlessly the small, reliable and easyto use Diver® level logger range works consistently in any environment.

Environmental Pumps

A pump for every eventuality

Whether you are sampling, developing or purging there are some hard and fast rules to adhere to when selecting a pump: know your head of water, the size of your well, flow rate, presence of suspended solids, potential for pump to run dry and whether you need to move product.

With more than 30 years in the business if you tell us the field conditions, restrictions and requirements we will be able to offer you the right pumping solution whether it’s a peristaltic, impeller type, bladder or total fluid pump.

When it comes to pumps we’ve made it our business to know what’s what. So whether you’re remediating, sampling or purging; your head of water is 5 or 500 metres; you have a high, low or no flow rate and the volume of suspended sediments is unknown – we’ll have the right pump, to hire or buy, for you.

No Purge SamplingNo purge sampling can save time and money

It’s easy to see why no purge sampling devices are gaining acceptance: they save time and money, the logistics are simple and above all it’s green technology. Like most newtechniques it would appear that there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution as some no purge samplers are good for VOC’s and others for inorganics.

After many years of internal research Van Walt has identified two products which address no purge sampling requirements: the Snap Sampler and Sorbisense. The Snap Sampler, now used extensively by companies like Shell, DuPont, Eastman-Kodak and Chevron, takes an instant ‘snap’ sample at a point in time. This sample can be depth specific and, importantly, is never exposed to the atmosphere. Alternatively Sorbisense collects a time interval profile, absorbing the sample over a period of time.

Since 2001, in the USA, the use of no purge sampling has outgrown any othergroundwater sampling technique and I believe that soon this will becomeacceptable practice in the UK and Europe as well.

Micro-purgingEnvironmentally friendly environmental monitoring

“As purging can generate large quantities of potentially contaminated groundwater requiring disposal or affect contaminant distribution in the ground, the use of low-flow purging or micro-purging may be considered as an alternative in order to reduce disposal volumes.”

British Standard 10175:2011

Hurray for the environment because with this now accepted technique you can sample more quickly, in smaller volumes creating far less environmental impact than the previous high flow sampling techniques. We have bladder or peristaltic pumps and water quality meters to measure stability of parameters such as pH, DO and turbidity – full micro purging solutions available to buy or rent.

Soil Moisture

TDR for the accurate determination of soil moisture levels by volume

The determination of soil moisture is important not only for agriculture and horticulture but increasingly in geographical, environmental and archaeological research.

There are three main technologies: Capacitance, TDR and by radioactive source. The latter, done with the Neutron Probe has more or less become obsolete because of safety considerations. Of the remaining two technologies, Capacitance has a place where relative measurements are acceptable but it’s only TDR that can seriously be considered for research purposes when absolute measurements are required.

The award winning TRIME®-TDR, as offered by Van Walt, produces very high frequency pulses which penetrate deep into the soil to generate the greater accuracy. Uniquely a TDR pulse also works accurately for the ‘more difficult’ soils such as clays and peats.

Whereas TDR technology is extremely complex, in practice the TRIME®-TDR makes soil moisture determination quick, easy and accurate. We offer several options from simple manual systems to complex integrated network solutions, with or without telemetry.

TRIME®-TDR technology allows you to determine soil moisture quickly, accuratelyand with ease. These systems are produced by an award winning, high technologyfamily business near Karlsruhe. Quite simply: German quality at its best!

Soil Augers

Simple and efficient – don’t ignore the usefulness of these hand tools

It’s easy to be seduced by mechanical devices but we’ve found that a sample will often be retrieved more quickly and with less effort with the right hand auger if you remember the important principles: sample per layer, never mix your soil horizons and be sure to avoid the contamination of deeper layers.

The auger, in its many guises, is both simple and extremely efficient. This technology is not new: augers have been around for half a century but still have an indispensable role in environmental research both above and below the water table. So whether you need an ‘Edelman’ type of hand auger that is easy to use, surprisingly effective, quick, light and cheap or a gouge or liner sampler for undisturbed samples, or perhaps a percussive window or windowless sampler, Van Walt can help you decide and ensure you have what you need.

Humble in application yet sophisticated in its usefulness, a good soil auger, whether you’re a geologist, archaeologist, hydrogeologist, work in agricultural, environmental monitoring, education orhorticulture – will form the backbone of your soil sampling research.

SedimentThe right equipment for the job

Whether you classify sediment as soil or all soils as sediment what’s certain is to collect samples when the soil is weak and non-cohesive, will be challenging. Retention of a sediment sample can be difficult as the sample will need to be enclosed or captured in a liner. Poor samples lead to errors in analysis and inaccurate conclusions.

Using the right equipment will save you time, money and mistakes. We have gouge augers and Russian corers for peat soil. For wet sediments, samples from below the water table or capturing the water/sediment interface our selection of piston type samples like the Multisampler, Beeker Sampler or Stitz Corer are ideal or, for a quick river or sea bed surface sample, a Van Veen Grab is easy to deploy.

Sediments are tricky to sample and only the right sampler will give you the desiredresults. There is no ‘Swiss Army Knife’ solution to sediment sampling and that’swhy we offer you a choice.
