CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Page 6: Environmentaal Graphic Design

PROBLEM: How do printing presses and

graphic designers (free-lance or in agencies)

recycle paper in Mexicali?

6

Page 7: Environmentaal Graphic Design

SUBPROBLEM: Why recycle? What is recycled paper? Is there interest and understanding of this event? How do printers/ printing presses save paper? Is ink an element that determines the recycling process? How much paper can they waste a day?Why use recycled paper?Where does all that paper go?Do Graphic designers notice the standard size of paper when they are designing? How many times can you recycle a recycled paper?

7

Page 8: Environmentaal Graphic Design

JUSTIFICATION: We decided to investigate about this topic, because we are currently having an ecological imbalance that is affecting our world, at the point that we are completely destroying it. It is known that recycling is one of the main ways to give a maximum use to prime material that is why for us, and for many other people, this topic is way too important.

As designers we have access to many resources and materials that could be recycled and also look for other alternatives to help our ecosystem. This can also help our clients save some money, and as graphics designers, we stay with a personal satisfaction.

8

Page 9: Environmentaal Graphic Design

“Design is a powerful conduit for change. As the messages, arti-facts and experiences we create pass through the hands, minds, and hearts of people, we have an opportunity to weave sustain-ability into the broader fabric of culture and to shift consumption and lifestyle aspirations to a more sustainable basis for living. In

order for individuals, societies, economies and the planet to flour-ish, we must support environmental responsibility, social equity, economic health, and cultural vitality and recognize that they are

inextricably linked.” (Living Principles, 2009)

Page 10: Environmentaal Graphic Design

HYPOTHESES:The printing presses in Mexicali don’t have a recycling culture.

Many Graphic Designers don’t respect the standard size of paper.

The sustainable printing presses are expensive, so the community won’t invest for this service.

There is a lack of communication between Graphics designers and the people of the printing presses to use most of the paper in the final product.

10

Page 11: Environmentaal Graphic Design

LIMITATION OF STUDY:One of the limitations of this research is that there was a lack of infor-mation because is a new topic, this can bring an incomplete investiga-tion. But we complement doing interviews and survey, that in a way answer our questions, but it limits our dimension because we can’t see what others do.

11

Page 12: Environmentaal Graphic Design

ASSUMPTIONS:There is a lack of interest by the graphic designer and the printing presses on the problem of recycling paper, since they waste an enormous amount of paper daily.

Some of the main concepts used throughout this research, are:

a) Eco-Friendly: Characterized by the interdependence of living organisms in an environment.b) Environment: Is a term describing the relational position of a species or population in its ecosystem to each other.

12

Page 13: Environmentaal Graphic Design

c) Graphic Design: A way of communication with visual elements and information to present an idea or concept.d) Paper: A material made of cellulose pulp derived mainly from wood or rags or certain grasses.e) Printing Presses: Is a mechanical device for applying pres-sure to an inked surface resting upon a medium (such as paper or cloth).f) Recycle: Involves processing used materials into new prod-ucts to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh, raw materials.g) Virgin Paper: Paper which has no recycled content.

CHAPTER 2: METHODOLOGY

Page 16: Environmentaal Graphic Design

POPULATION:There are 200 printing presses in Mexicali according to Sec-cion Amarilla (www.seccionamarilla.com.mx, retrieved March 23, 2010.) We chose a population of five printing presses, four freelance graphic designers, and two agencies.

DESIGN OF THE STUDY: During this report we decided to do an interview to some design agencies, graphics designers and printing presses; and a survey to the students of the bachelor of graphic design in CETYS University, Campus Mexicali. This was to achieve better information focus on different points of view, because being a student is not the same as a Graphic Designer; the knowl-edge that you get in school and the one that you get with experience is different. Also, printing presses and design agencies will provide a different perspective of the same problem or situation. The interviews for agencies and designers are mostly integrated by open-closed questions in which the informants can develop their ideas and provide complimentary information. The surveys are made up of short an-swer and closed (YES/NO) questions.

18

Page 19: Environmentaal Graphic Design

19

DATA ANALYSIS AND REPORTING DATA:The information was analyzed according to the subproblems; we used in-formation that was relevant and fresh. Since environmental design is new and a constantly-changing subject there are not many books about this topic, so we supported our research with information from magazines, ar-ticles and websites to produce our framework.

CHAPTER 3: THEORICAL FRAMEWORK

Page 22: Environmentaal Graphic Design

22

As we all know, there are few persons interested in the impact that recycling can produce, because they think that with so little actions, there are not big changes, and this way they live it back, not understanding the importance that recycling has. One of this research’s main topics is recycling, so it’s fair to start explain-ing what it is. It’s the process that involves used materials to create new products, that also helps our planet preventing the waste of useful material parts.

So why recycle? The demand of paper has lately increased. So if we analyzed this paper comes from wood, wood comes from trees and trees from the forest. This has meant the loss of many animal habitats and eco-systems. So day-to-day we put in danger many species that are important for this world. Recycling is a tool that will help us protect our surroundings. If we recycle, we save at least 30,000 liters of water plus 95% of air pollu-tion, but if we also used recycled paper in the process, we are saving about 20 to 70% less energy consumption than if we use virgin paper.

Page 23: Environmentaal Graphic Design

23

“Recycling usually entails melting, pulping, shredding, or otherwise reconstituting material, but that’s not always necessary. Many materials maintain enough structural integrity to reprocessed or, better yet, recon-textualized. Designers can look to waste streams as a source for inex-pensive alternative materials that often have built-in-back-story.” (Green

Graphic Design, 2008). We are going to focus exclusively in paper so we are going to intro-duce what it is, and how it’s made. “Paper is made from cellulose fiber, the source of which can be pulped wood, or a variety of other materials such as rags, cotton, grasses, sugar cane, straw, waste paper, or even elephant dung.” (Waste Online, 2006). In this country, wood pulp is the most common source material for the manufacture of virgin paper. After paper is used for first time it can be recycled and reused, but we have to be conscious that paper is not a recourse that will last forever. So paper cannot be recycled indefinitely, it can only be recycled four to six times, as the fibers get shorter and weaker each time. Some virgin pulp must be introduced into the process to maintain the strength and quality of the fiber, so no matter how much we recycle we will never eradicate the need for virgin fiber.

Page 24: Environmentaal Graphic Design

24

“When selecting paper, keep in mind that sustainability is not simply a matter of maximizing recycled content. Energy used in manufacture and

transport, chlorine content and other chemical content (such as lignin), sustainable forestry, and other factors should be considered. Proximity of the mill to the printer should also be considered: a recycled paper that is

shipped across the ocean is less sustainable than a sustainably harvested virgin-fiber paper that has to travel only a few miles.” (AIGA, 2010)

There are many types of biodegradable paper that can contribute to the good cause of preserving our planet, like: “Cotton paper: Cotton papers are superior in both strength and durabil-ity to wood pulp-based papers, which often contain high concentrations of

destructive acids.Totally Chlorine Free (TCF): Paper made from 100% virgin fiber (includ-ing alternative fiber from sources other than trees) that is unbleached or bleached with non-Chlorine compounds. TCF cannot apply to recycled

papers, because the source fiber cannot be determined.Processed Chlorine Free (PCF): Paper is made from fiber recycled from

Page 25: Environmentaal Graphic Design

25

post-consumer waste (PCW) and unbleached or bleached without Chlorine compounds. PCF paper is the most environmentally friendly type.

Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF): Paper made from virgin or recycled fiber that is bleached using alternative Chlorine compounds as a substitute for

elemental Chlorine.” (AIGA, 2010)

Paper is a very important tool for the graphic designer, because it’s one of the most important ways in which visual communication arrives to a costumer. For example: coupons, business cards, brochures and others. In this manner, our mayor is connected in many forms with printing presses.

Printing presses and offices are the principal collectors of paper waste, but this can’t be so harmful if they have ideas to recycle it. Many printing presses use waste of paper and transform them into sketching books or to leave some messages; in other cases, they contact whoever is dealing with normal waste, so they can provide recycling services. There is also another option- to buy in first instance, previously recycled products. The future of recycling ultimately depends on there being a market for the materials col-lected. Recycling is not just collecting materials and taking them to the

Page 26: Environmentaal Graphic Design

26

recycling bank, it is about “closing the loop” and buying recycled too. Paper mills cannot continue to produce recycled paper if people do not buy items made from it.There’s another way to help our planet and contribute also as graphic de-signers that is look for sustainable inks. Ink is “a liquid used for printing or writing or drawing”; there are many types of inks, but we are going to focus in the sustainable ones because there are biodegradable. “Indian ink that is a mixture containing soot and oil of lamps, combined with

donkey skin and musk to rectify the scent of the oil.The Soy ink is made from soybean oil that is environmentally friendly and

safe. It became an alternative used by the Newspaper Association of Amer-ica, replacing the standard petroleum based ink. The color from soy ink

creates sharp, bright images on newsprint. Then, printer’s ink that has a greasy in texture. And at last, dye-based ink can produce more color, based on density. While dyes have the tendency

to soak into the paper, they can potentially allow the ink to bleed at the edges.” (ezinearticle, 2010)

During the recycling process, we think that ink is an element that deter-mines if the paper can be reused or not. This has to be with the type of ink

Page 27: Environmentaal Graphic Design

27

that was administrated to the raw material. For example, the dye-based ink has more density than a soy ink, this way it’s harder to remove it from the paper and process it.“Sometimes the ink is not removed from the paper when it is reprocessed. The ink is dispersed into the pulp, discoloring it slightly, which is why recy-cled paper can have a grayish tinge. If the paper is to be de-inked, this can

be done in one of two ways, by washing or flotation.Washing is when the paper is pulped, chemicals can be added which sepa-

rate the ink from the paper and allow it to be washed away in the large amounts of water used. (The water can then be cleaned and re-used.) Flo-tation is when air can be passed through the pulp, producing foam which

will hold at least half of the ink and can be skimmed off.” (Waste Online, 2006)

Even if the dye-ink paper process involves chemicals and water, it’s less harmful for the environmental than processing new paper, this is be-cause in reprocessing, it’s using what they already have and just cleaning and in creating a new paper they have to cut more trees, using more water and energy.

Page 28: Environmentaal Graphic Design

28

READING PROCESS:Since the recycling topic is relatively new and in constant change, there are no updated books about it, so we decided to use maga-zines, articles and websites to achieve our goals.Basically all the articles we used were around 2008-2010, be-cause during these last years people started to interest about environmental graphic design.

35

OUR HYPOTESIS WAS:WRONG

At first instance,we thought that printing presses were not inter-ested on recycle, but doing some interviews we realized that we wrong, even if these places dont’ have the money to buy some ecological equiment, they try to reuse all the paper waste.

Page 36: Environmentaal Graphic Design

When you do a printing job, do you prefer to do it in a paper standar size?Yes, that way you save problems with the paper, don’t waste that much, also the printing price it’s not that expensive that if you ask for a design with cut and in a diferent size. Viva Income

Page 39: Environmentaal Graphic Design

39

OUR HYPOTESIS WAS:WRONG

As we can see in our interviews and surveys, graphic designer use the standard size of paper, because it waste less paper, and it’s cheaper than if you ask for another size, cutting paper includes an extra amount in the price.

Page 40: Environmentaal Graphic Design

40

The sustainable printing presses are expensive, so the community won’t spend for this service.

Page 42: Environmentaal Graphic Design

42

OUR HYPOTESIS WAS:RIGHT

Having an ecological printing equipment is a very expensive investment, even if there are a lot of costumer interested on a ecological printing press-es the selling price will be very high, and now how the economic situation is going, we think that this would not work right now.Even if there it’s not an ecological printing service, some presses tried to give you some advice of how to save paper and which is the best option for you and the job you are printing.

Page 43: Environmentaal Graphic Design

43

There is a lack of communication between

Graphics designers and the people of the printing presses

to use most of the paper in the final product.

When you do some printing test, do you use the other face of the paper? Yes, that way yo don’t waste paper and ink.

Alejandra Becerra¿Tú como agencia recomiendas algún medio ecológico al momento de imprimir?

Utiliza las dos caras de las hojas, lo que sobre sirve para notas, trata de imprimir en medidas estandar

You as a design agency, recommend an ecological printing option?Use both faces of the paper, what is waste can be use for notes, and always try to

print in a standard size.Viva income

46

¿Cuándo mandas a hacer un trabajo procuras que se hagan en las medidas estándar?Si, por lo general son medidas estándar, en dado caso de no ser así se trata de

ajustar para meter algún otro proyecto que se ajuste al espacio que sobre. When you do a printing job, do you prefer to do it in a paper standar size?

Yes, I mostly use standard sizes, but in other case I try to adjust the work, so I can print another job in the “waste” space.

¿Tú como agencia recomiendas algún medio ecológico al momento de imprimir?si, al momento de hacer pruebas de impresión es cuando por lo general se re-

utiliza el papelYou as a design agency, recommend an ecological printing option?

Yes, when you do printing test it’s when we usually reuse paper.Agencia El Mercado

Page 47: Environmentaal Graphic Design

47

OUR HYPOTESIS WAS:WRONG

As we can see, printing presses and agencies are in constant communica-tion with the graphic designer, so they can reuse, recycle and also save paper. They constantly work together so they can help the client and help our planet too.

Page 48: Environmentaal Graphic Design
Page 49: Environmentaal Graphic Design

CHAPTER 5: CONCLUSIONS

Page 50: Environmentaal Graphic Design

50

OTHER FINDINGS: We realized that other countries are proposing new ways to save our planet and also maintain the “old” ones; like separating the trash in different trash cans instead of throwing everything to the same. They are conscious that little actions do big things. Why can’t we do the same? Our world is ending and we think that we should take care of it, because it’s not forever

Page 51: Environmentaal Graphic Design

51

FUTURE RESEARCH: As it has been mentioned, this is constantly moving on, so we think that this would give an idea to those people who want to contribute to The Earth. This research is focused on paper as a material, but this research can be extended to other materials, such as cardboard, glass, plastics, and others.

Page 52: Environmentaal Graphic Design

52

CONCLUSION: The process was a little bit hard because it’s a new topic and there is not much information about it, so we had to support our research on what we had available. Because of that, we stayed a little short in the framework, but all the sub problems where an-swered with magazines, websites, interviews and surveys. English is not our native language so we had some problems with our grammar, but this also helped us to remember and improve our grammar and vocabulary skills. We learned that research is not a work of one day; you have to focus on what you are doing, spend time and effort to develop a good methodological research.
