Evidence & Analysis for The GiverTheme: Sometimes you have to break the rules to help people.

Evidence: Jonas tried to give Asher the memory of color by grabbing on to him, even though it’s against the rules to touch people.

Possible Reasoning: This shows how Jonas wanted everyone to know about the memories, not just the Giver and himself.

If someone would break the rules to share something, then clearly they are committed to helping that person.

This suggests that Jonas is willing to break the rules to share the knowledge and beauty of the memories.

Theme: You need help to push against authority.

Evidence: Faber gave Montag the idea of burning the firemen and also gave him the ear device to listen in on conversations from afar to assess if they were an ally or not.

Possible Reasoning: This shows how Faber wanted to help Montag push back against the government’s laws against books.

If someone would break the laws and defy the government to help someone, then clearly they are committed to helping that person.

This suggests that Montag and Faber need each other to push against authority because Montag needs Faber’s knowledge while Faber needs Montag’s courage.
