The family dynamic in Alexandra is based on the principle of shared responsibility. Alexandrians have a collectivist culture, which can be described as a prominence of interdependency.

The elderly hold much power in the community, but they only hope that the next generation grows to respect and love Alexandra as much as they do, continuing to gain knowledge and protect the land that they fought to keep.

| Context |London Road is a main road that connects Alexandra to other nearby areas. The main transportation , taxi

stops , are located along this road.

Entrepreneurship is greatly encouraged in Alexandra so many people in the community set up stands selling produce, meats, fish, jewelry, and clothing along London Road.

| Connecting Program to Necessities |There was great concern in the aspect of developing the youth and building a good foundation for long-term success in the future. Alex wants to truly encourage all employment aspirations and in order to achieve that, a solid base of skill sets are required. The community center has different facilities

that educate different age groups about various aspects in life. Some programs promote physical fitness and health while others train people to make a step

towards the professional field.

| Placing Program on the Site |Contextually, one major issue that needs to be addressed is the security of the property. The site is located on a very

heavily populated road, both vehicular transportation and foot traffic. Every nearby location also has a barricade similar to the one that currently surrounds the entire perimeter of the daycare center. My response is to create segmented areas that can stand completely alone programmatic at times and then, at other times, expand and connect to the rest of the spaces. Each

program will have access to a courtyard even if other parts of the building are closed for that period of the day.

Page 24: eNtokozweni Community Center

Each program has its own courtyard space so that they have

an their own exterior space

Parking should be tucked in for security purposes

| Courtyards and Garden |

Entry courtyard provided to allow a break from the heavy vehicular traffic of London Road

Courtyards and gardens help to bring the culture of Alex back into the community center by breaking up larger masses and encouraging interactive and

communal spaces.

| Layers of Thresholds |

Controlled and secure playgriound space

Layered threshold strategies will be applied to multiple sections of the program that allow for extension into the courtyards and gardens. Depending on the

intent, these thresholds will be able to transform and perform different duties for the users. The gardens will also be a source of food and provide the

community with nutrious produce.

| Sustainable Features |The threshold systems will address ventilation, shading, visibility, and public or private

filtration and help control cooling and heating for the multiple areas in the center. They will act as a sun shading device for any glazing that could be exposed to sunlight. They also aid in concealing all of the water cisterns that are located in

between multiple program spaces.
