We feel good about the positive outcomes that we see in the community we serve:

Sabathani is proud to present the 2010 Annual Report to our many supporters and friends who

help to keep us a vital resource in the community. Each and every one of you deserves our sincerest

thank you for making a difference in the lives of nearly 27,000 people who look to Sabathani for food,

clothing and a myriad of programs that strengthen their lives. We are truly grateful for your loyalty

and continued confidence.

Because of you, Sabathani continues to be a strong community organization where:

Ouroverallgoalistohelppeopletacklebarriersintheirlivesandbecomeself-sufficient.

• Anewpubliccomputerlabthankstobeingoneof11communityprogramsintheUniversityofMinnesota’scommunitybroadbandaccessproject.Asapartner,wehave15newcomputersloadedwiththelatestsoftware.Wealsoreceivetechnical

assistanceandfreetrainingclassesofferedtoourprogramparticipantsbytheUofM.Thankstothisinitiative,weareabletolessenthedigitaldivideinourcommunitybyofferingcomputeraccesstothosewithoutahomecomputer.

A highlight that is truly worth celebrating.

SabathaniprimarilyservestheCentralandBryantneighborhoods.MostofthefamiliesservedbySabathanihaveamedianfamilyincomeof$30,000ayearandareAfricanAmericanwithLatinosataclosesecond.Issuesaffectingourcommunityincludeunemployment/underemployment,hunger,housing,education,languageandcrimeandviolence.

Thedemandforfood,clothingandhouseholditemsishigh.Morethan90percentofthefamiliesweservecomeforbasicneedsservices.Trendsweseearethatfamiliesareingreaterneedoffood,pastparticipantsarereturningforserviceduetopooreconomicconditionsandhardtimesaredrawinganewcropofnon-traditionalparticipantstoSabathani–thosewhohaveneverbeforeusedsocialservices.

Thesegmentofourcommunity’spopulationneedingfoodisgrowing.

Fiftypercentofourfoodshelfusersarechildren,and20percentareseniors.

Sabathani’slong-standingpolicyhasbeentonotdenyservicetoanyone.Theneedforfundingisever-presentbecausesomanypeoplerelyonSabathani’sservicesdaily,andthenumbersofpeopleweareservingaresteadilyincreasing.

Overtheyears,SabathanihasbecomeasettlementhouseforthemanyimmigrantfamiliesmigratingtotheTwinCitiesviaSouthMinneapolis.Inthelate1970s,theareaattractedalargenumberofSoutheastAsianfamilies.Bythemid-1990s,Latinofamiliesbeganmigratingtothiscommunity.SabathaniwascreatedtoserveAfricanAmericanfamiliesatatimewhentheirneedswerenotbeingmet.SabathaniremainscommittedtoaddressingthedisparitiesfacingAfricanAmericans,butweareevolvingtomeettheneedsofadiversemulti-culturalcommunity.

SabathanihasoccupiedtheformerBryantJuniorHighSchoolbuildingsince1979.Thevisionthenandtodayistohaveabuildingcommunityofcombinedservicesthatwouldserveabroadrangeofcommunityneeds.PeoplecometoSabathaniforamyriadofprograms,culturalenrichment,communityinformationandsocialengagement.

Collaborationishowwedeliverourmission.Sabathanileasesofficespacetoothernonprofitsandencouragesentrepreneurshipbyallocatingsometenantspaceforsmallbusinessessuchashairsalons,foodserviceoperatorsandagiftandclothingshop.Sabathaniconsidersitstenantstobecollaborativepartnersprovidingaddedvaluetothebuildingcommunity.

First Access Health CenterTheFirstAccessHealthCenterisanintegratedhealthandwellness

programthatprovidescommunity-basedaccesstomedicalanddentalservicesandteachespeopleabouthealthylifestylesthroughdiet,exerciseandhealthychoices.

TheCenterfeaturesapediatricmedicalanddentalclinicwithwalk-inhoursavailable.PeoplecanalsoenrollinexerciseclassessuchasZumba,Kettlebells,YogaandKickboxing.Duringthespringandsummermonths,gardenerscanpurchaseaplotinSabathani’scommunitygardenandenjoygrowingtheirownfruitsandvegetableswhilelearningthevalueofcreatingfreshfoodsources.TheoverallgoaloftheCenteristoreducethehealthdisparitiesthatdisproportionatelyaffectpeopleofcolorinSouthMinneapolis.

First Access isalsoaculturallycompetentprogram.SpecialattentionhasbeengiventocreatingawelcomingatmosphereforLatinoprogramparticipants.Sabathanihasalsoestablishedcross-culturalrelationshipswithseveralprogramsinthebuildingtoaddressfurtherneeds.

StudentsintheMinnesotaInternshipCenterareexcitedaboutshowinganewgardeningproject.TheCenterisatenantpartnerinSabathani’sbuilding.

Senior Center TheSeniorCenterisdevotedtohelpingsenioradultsmaintain

independence.TheCenterprovideson-siteculturallycompetenthealthclinicsincludingweeklybloodpressurechecks,adiabetesmanagementprogramcalledClubSugar,exerciseclassesandmore.Sabathani’sSeniorCenteroffersprogrammingbeyondtraditionalservicesfoundinmanyseniorcenters.

Club SugarDuetotheprevalenceofdiabetes

intheAfricanAmericancommunity,ClubSugarwasinitiatedin2009asapartnershipbetweentheSabathaniSeniorCenterandtheUniversityofMinnesota’sMedicalSchool.TheClubisfacilitatedbyUofMmedicalstudents.ClubSugarnowhasmorethan80members.About40diabeticandpre-diabeticparticipantsandtheirfamilymembersmeetmonthlytodiscussconcernsrelatedtodiabetesmanagement.

Eachmonthamedicalstudentgivesapresentationonarelevantsubjectandleadsaninteractivediscussionontopicssuchasdietandexercise,thecorrelationbetweenhighsugarlevelsandeyesight,circulation,andperipheralarterialdisease.Aftereachsession,ahealthylunchisserved.Clubmembersalsohavetheoptionofparticipatinginaminiexerciseclassandhavingtheirglucoselevelchecked.

“ClubSugarhasbeenhighlysuccessfulbecauseitisparticipantinitiatedandprovidesagreatlearningexperienceforthemedicalstudents,”explainsGeorgiaMarinkov-Omorean,SeniorCenterProgramManager.

“IhavefoundtheClubtobeveryhelpfulandinformative,”saidColeridgeHendon,whois91yearsoldanddiabetic.“Itteachesyouhowtolive.Ithinkit’snice.”

Seeingthemodel’ssuccess,theUniversityisconsideringstartingaClubSugaratUniversity-FairviewHospitalandperhapsothersites.

ASeniorCenterparticipantgetsavisionscreeningaspartofClubSugar’sdiabetespreventionandawarenessefforts.

Senior Center highlight truly worth celebrating.

• TheSeniorCenterlaunchedmulti-generationalprogrammingwiththeHorizonsYouthProgramandaneighborhoodtheatregroup,Diversity Alive!.Twenty-fiveseniorsand17youthsparticipatedintheproductioncalledIt’s a Dance Thing.Itwasanentertaininglookatthegenerationalgapbetweenyoungpeopleandseniorsatafamilyreunion.Theperformancetookplaceinourauditoriumandwasattendedby300communitymembersincludingstaffandboardmembers.TheSeniorCenterandHorizonsYouthProgramhavemorecreativeprojectsplannedinthepipeline.

Horizons Youth ProgramHorizonsYouthprovidesafter-schoolandsummerlearningforchildren

fiveto13yearsold.Horizonsprovidesreading,writing,math,computerskills,artsandcraftsandsocialdevelopment.

Horizonsprimarilyservesfamiliesinthecommunitywhowanttheirkidstodevelopacademicskillsandcompetenciesinasafe,qualityout-of-schooltimeprogram.Thefocusisonbuildingtrustrelationshipsbetweenprogramparticipantsandthestaffandvolunteers,behaviormodificationandencouragingapositiveattitudeaboutschool.

Turningaroundnegativebehaviorsandpoorattitudetowardschoolisproventobeakeycomponentinlearningandearningbettergrades.Theuseofpeerleadersprovidesbuilt-inopportunitiesforleadership.Learningsocialskillssuchasdecision-makingiseffectiveinachievingpositivebehaviorsinprogramandinschool.

JoeyandStaceyDurenaresiblingswhoattendedSabathani’sLifeSkillsChildCareandHorizonsYouthprograms.Theseprogramshaveprovidedafirmfoundationfortheireducationalachievementandfutureemploymentsuccess.

“Havingmychildreninalearningenvironmentwheretheyweresafeandwellcaredformadeitpossibleformetoworkandattendschoolwhentheyweresmall,”theirmotherSharonTurnersays.“Stacey was already speaking Spanish and logging onto the computer at age 2-1/2. I remember the first word she learned to type was the password, ‘future.’ ”

TurnercreditsSabathani’syouthprogramsasthelaunchingpadfortheirloveoflearningandacademicsuccess.StaceyisnowajunioratWashburnHighSchoolinMinneapoliswithplansofattendingtheUniversityofMinnesotatomajorinbiology.Hergoalistobecomeaveterinarian.JoeygraduatedfromSouthHighSchoolin2008,andattendedCHPInternational,Inc.-JobCorps,oneofSabathani’stenantorganizations.HeisnowattendingMinneapolisCommunityandTechnicalCollege,whereheisstudyinggraphicwebdesignandinteractivemedia.Hiscareeraspirationistobecomeagraphicdesignerintherecordingandmediaarts.

JoeyandStaceydevelopedaninterestandpassionforgardeningandagriculturewhileparticipatinginaHorizonsYouthgardeningproject.TheirloveforhorticulturehastransitionedintoemploymentandparticipationwiththeUofM’sLandscapeArboretumprogram,wheretheyhavebothbeenemployedsincetheywere12yearsold.JoeyandStaceyarenowages21and16andarestillverymuchinvolvedwithSabathani’sprograms,wheretheyvolunteertheirtimeandtalents.

andhadnofamilymembersshecouldturntoforhelp.AFamilyResourcesNavigatorwasabletoassistMariafinanciallytoalleviateherimmediatecrisiswithfundingprovidedbytheBeverlyFoundation.ShewasalsoabletohelpMariathroughtheprocessofnegotiatingwithherlendertohavehermonthlymortgagepaymentslowered,whichallowedhertokeepherhome.

MariareceivedassistancefromSabathani’sfoodandclothingshelfforemergencyfoodandtoobtainschooluniformsforherson,Allen.*ThroughSabathani’sFirstAccessCenter,Allenwasabletogetasportsphysicalexamination,aflushotandotherrequiredimmunizations.ThefamilywassuccessfullymatchedinSabathani’sAdoptaFamilyprogram,whichhelpedthefamilyenjoytheholidaysdespitetheirhardships.
