WHI.34 Describe the concept of Enlightenment in European history and describe the accomplishments of major Enlightenment thinkers, including Diderot, Kant, Locke, Montesquieu, Rousseau, and Voltaire. (H)

WHI.35 Explain how the Enlightenment contributed to the growth of democratic principles of government, a stress on reason and progress, and the replacement of a theocentric interpretation of the universe with a secular interpretation. (H)

PURPOSE

The purpose of this unit to review the concepts and ideas learned about the Enlightenment during the previous school year. During this brief review unit the major ideas of Locke, Montesquieu, Rousseau, and Voltaire will be covered. Students will look at their impact on the American Revolution and society today and this knowledge will carry over into their study and understanding of the French Revolution in the following unit.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

At the end of this unit students will be able to understand and explain the significance of the Enlightenment period in terms of the impact it had on social justice, economic ideas, government and monarchies.

IMPACT

Enlightenment ideas are present everywhere today from the Declaration of Independence, the set-up of our government, our legal system, and common thoughts

and understanding about people and society. By knowing and understanding Enlightenment ideas one is able to trace and understand the origins of many aspects of our government and society, as well as the cause of many political and societal shifts that occur throughout this course.

Explain in detail the parameters of the social contract and how it connects to Enlightenment ideas.Enlightenment Newsletter:You are the host/hostess of a very popular and influential salon in Paris. At your last salon meeting you were fortunate enough to have a prominent Enlightenment thinker (Voltaire, Rousseau, Locke, Montesquieu) come visit and speak about their ideas. Unfortunately many people were not able to attend and they’d like to know all about the event. Create a newsletter that explains about your salon, the speaker and their ideas, and your opinions on them.
