Three Rivers Kiwanis, Milo-BrownvilleApril 7, 2010 Regular Morning Meeting

The meeting was called to order at 6:45 AM. There were nineteen members present at the morning meeting at Hobnobbers’s. We had an inter-club from Dover with seven members. We had three guests, Crystal Macomber, and Bonnie’s cousins, Dillon and Will.

Eben led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Herbie offered the Morning Prayer. Crystal has a birthday tomorrow the 8th and Jeremy Finson’s birthday is April 12th. Also, two couples will be celebrating their anniversaries next week: Richard and Pauline Mullins on April 13th and Neil and Barb Hamlin on April 14th. We collected ten happy/sad dollars – Lois Trask returned safely from Italy; happy to see all the signs of spring, bulbs pushing up and robins returning from the south; Eben had his first golf outing of the year.

The nominating committee officially announced the positions that will be voted on at our annual meeting, April 14th. This is the second announcement: Virgil Valente and Jim Macomber have both agreed to run for additional terms as board members and Frank Cochrane has agreed to run for one of the Board positions. Richard Mullins has agreed to run for the position of Vice President.

Other announcements: Auction and Canoe Race committee meeting will be at Ethelyn’s on Monday the 12th; Variety Show Committee met on April 5th and has Lois running the food table, Tom Harrigan and Dick Mullins handling the ticket sales and Jim Macomber arranging for the advertising; Bike Rodeo is coming up and is being handled by Jim Macomber.

Our speaker was Dana Mosher, Executive Director of Camp CaPella. After a couple of years of being closed the camp is now back in full swing. Thanks to a very generous gift from Warren Buffet’s sister, Doris Buffet, the camp is looking forward to many years of providing enjoyment for people with disabilities. Their mission is to provide quality of life experiences for people with disabilities and their families by providing year-round educational experiences. They are located in Holden on Phillips Lake, twelve miles south of Bangor. We got to see a short slide presentation showing the campers having fun, swimming, doing group activities and generally having a good time. Any support that Kiwanis or its members can make would be greatly appreciated.

Our speaker next week will be Dick Martin of the Milo Recreation Department.March 31, 2010 Fifth Wednesday Evening Meeting

We met at Hobnobber’s for dinner and fun. There were ten members, one guest, Mrs. Leeman, and six Inter-Clubbers from Dover. After a delicious dinner, we celebrated everyone’s birthday with a Yankee Swap. The gifts were appreciated by all.

We did not have a formal meeting, so we were on our way home by 8 o’clock. Thank you, Ethelyn, for the wonderful birthday cakes and for planning the event.

Respectfully submitted, Nancy Harrigan, Secretary

Milo Free Public Library News

By Judith D. MacdougallLast Friday, April 2, the librarians held their monthly luncheon at

Elaine’s Café. This was a very special time because the date was also Pam’s birthday. What a surprise for her when the staff members arrived with birthday bags and cards. When I had called to remind them of the date, I clued them in that it was her birthday. I thought they might want to bring cards, but they also brought surprise gifts. Pam was flabbergasted! Dearle stopped by for about 20 minutes, but then she had to hurry off for an appointment. Unfortunately Rochelle had to work, but since she was working at Elaine’s, she took a break and visited with the 4 of us who were actually having luncheon. My birthday gift to Pam was a cake. I had ordered a chocolate birthday cake from Elaine’s early in the week as a surprise for Pam. While singing “Happy Birthday” the restaurant staff brought in the cake decorated with Pam’s name. Pam cut the cake for us and also shared it with the waitresses. Just as lunch was winding down, Josie came in with a birthday card and wished Pam well. She had had to baby sit unexpectedly. I had hoped that we could all be together for the luncheon, which would have made it perfect, but as I thought about it, everyone was there at one time or another to wish Pam well and actually that was as perfect as life gets. What a fantastically fun time we had!

This week we chose Extreme Pet books from a box of preview books we received from Lookout Books. I chose the 6 books in the series thinking some patrons (especially small ones) would enjoy looking at the books and dreaming about an exotic pet even if they didn’t have a hope of getting one.

While I was browsing through the books when I wrote them up , I discovered some interesting facts that I didn’t think you could get along without, so I decided to share them in this column.

In the book about Rats I learned that baby rats are called “kittens”. Now that seemed bizarre to me. I also learned that female rats can have from 2-20 “kittens” in a litter. The book also went on to inform me that rats are very friendly and want to play with their owners every day. No thank you.

In the Piranha book it was explained that piranhas have very sharp jaws and triangular teeth that lock together like a trap. There is no known case of a piranha killing a person despite the horror stories of a person falling into a piranha infested river and soon becoming a skeleton. Perhaps no one ever lived to tell the real tale.

Lizards are carriers of salmonella and should not be kept in homes with children under 5 years, with pregnant women, or with sick and old people. They require very strict hygiene in their care.

In the Spiders book I learned that the Red Knee tarantula is a very popular pet. You may need a permit to keep a spider but they are quiet, clean and don’t need much room. The book also mentioned that spider silk is 6X stronger than steel of the same weight.

The Snakes info was not startling but you might like to know that the oldest snake on record was a boa constrictor named Popeye who died in the Philadelphia Zoo in 1977 at the age of 40.

The 6th book in the series is about Salamanders. The only interesting fact I noticed was that most salamanders start out as larva and transform to adult salamanders-two stages. Some salamanders are born live as 4 legged adults and one salamander spends all its life in the larval form. The Eastern newt has 3 forms. It begins life as a larva, becomes an eft on land and then after 5 years returns to the water.

These books would be helpful to anyone wanting to venture into exotic pet care. The Library Will Be Closed On MONDAY, APRIL 19 In Observance Of PATRIOTS DAY

Tony’s Travel Journal..Anthony Bourdain’s Thoughts…Zamboni Time Apr 10, 2010, 1:30 PM |

“I get a perverse and evil satisfaction out of putting members of my crew on camera at every opportunity. Their discomfort--particularly once the "vampire clip" microphone is attached to the inside of their shirt (and they have to remember that every trip to the bathroom might provide considerable amusement to the guy wearing the headphones in the other room) -- is exquisite. The shoe on the other foot as they say...Those used to heedlessly pointing the cameras at others are suddenly caught under its merciless and unwavering gaze. Every pimple, bad pant decision, errant hair, ill advised comment potentially the subject of timeless Comedy Gold.Producer Tracey Gudwin knows this all too well: her inside-out underpants captured forever on YouTube when I plucked a leech off her butt in Borneo. Cameraman Todd Liebler has been chased across the town square of a rural Chinese village by Asian fans shrieking "Mr. Clumsy-Man! MISTER CLUMSY MANNN!!!" -- famous as he is for a memorable blunder into plates on the Indonesia show. But knowingly putting down the camera, clipping on the sound pack and agreeing to take your colleagues to your home -- introducing them to your family, letting them wander freely in your small New England town, interrogating passersby, former schoolteachers, childhood friends -- that takes some guts. Especially knowing what Zach Zamboni knows about our work habits. His poor grandmother had to endure persistent on-camera interrogation from me about any possible episodes of peeping, fire-starting, or mistreatment of animals in Zach's early childhood (She neatly deflected my questions as smoothly and effortlessly as a mob lawyer).Zach's a born and bred Mainer -- raised in the small town of Milo -- and real proud of that fact. Unlike the rest of us on the crew, who, when a show is done, return to apartments in New York, Zach goes home, puts on a funny hat and -- I gather -- does all sort of Dinty Moore type stuff like chopping wood and sailing. Whenever I'd ask him about this while on the road, he'd be so insistent as to the glories of his home state that I finally challenged him to show us. For this, he will no doubt be punished.Generally, when you're proud enough to take me around a place for purposes of television, the reaction from fans runs along the lines of "How could you NOT take him to (fill in blank here)." Followed by vitriolic expressions of doubt that you were a "true" local.Zach will no doubt be taken to task by food bloggers (of which Maine has many) for NOT taking me to the "best" restaurant in Portland. By others for managing to avoid the lobster roll entirely. Or, perhaps, not being sufficiently foodie, chesty, or vivacious. To which I can only remind viewers that this show will never show "YOUR" Baltimore...or "the best" of anything. I felt no responsibility to have a maple syrup scene. This episode is about Zach's Maine. And frankly, the closer we got to Zach's little town of Milo -- and his family -- the happier I was with my time there. For me, Maine will always be a golden hour, post-breakfast, swacked on Crown Royal, shotgunning snowmen with Zach's cousin Bobby.I'm particularly honored that the brilliant, reclusive and extraordinary John Conte actually came out of his kitchen and sat down with us in the dining room. This is, I am assured, no small thing. And I am forever grateful for the original hardbound copy of "My Life and Loves" by Frank Harris that John just happened to have tucked among a pile of saute pans -- and which he gave me.

Zach, for all the days and hours we've spent together over the years in faraway places, has always been something of a mystery to me. He's a man who's always seemed happiest when dangling from the skids of a helicopter, strapping himself to the bow of a speedboat, or fiddling for interminable periods of time with lens adaptors, home made gyros or strings of jury-rigged lightbulbs. But I think I know something else about him now -- having seen it first hand: what makes him happy about being a Mainer”
