up for yourself.

A friend recently had to go in thehospital for a couple of days. When he received his bill whichthe insurance company paid, henoticed he had been charged$8 for

a can of Sprite. That’s a hell of amarkup. No bar in town rips youoff like that.

Another friend was in the hospitaland noticed a strange doctor cameinto the room with his doctor. Heasked who the person was andwas told he was another doctorjust making the rounds with hisdoctor.

He asked and was told that thedoctor was being paid for the visitas well. Since that doctor neverdid anything or askesd about thepatient he thought it was strangehe was there.

When he received the bill, it wasclear why he was there. The hos-pital charged my friend’s insur-ance company for the visit – avisit that included walking in theroom, never saying a word andthen leaving with the other doc-tor.

With all this bull going on it’s no

wonder Medicare is going broke. This crap has got to stop.

It’s time for the people tospeak up– each voice matters.I understand the upcomingPresidential election is going tohave a special new line to makeyou vote on. It’s going to say“none of the above”.

Are we not sure this election is notthe third remake of the movie“Dumb and Dumber”?

At least Trump earned his moneyand didn’t steal and cheat to get itlike Hillary

Does the scamming never end?

I have been getting meds filled ata local national drug chain. Withmy insurance my co-pay is $33. Inoticed I was being given thegeneric brand – no big deal.

The last time I had it filled I askedthe druggist if the generic cost $33how much more was the namebrand? To my surprise he said $33.

I was getting the cheaper genericbut was being charged for thename brand product. To say I wasa little miffed is an understate-ment.

I told him to to empty the genericproduct and fill my script with thename product. Just think of themillions and millions of dollarsthe drug chain made doing this.Yes, the product is chemically thesame and does the same job butdrug chains fill orders with a prod-uct that cost them much less andcharge you the full price. Youdon’t get the full price break theydo. Just another way theAmerican public is getting rippedoff by corporate America.

The next time you get a scriptfilled ask what’s going on. Stand

...I haven’t been to Englandsince my sophomore year incollege. (I had a fantastic time, but that is neither here northere.) But, as I briefly men-tioned last week, I was born inBedford and still have relativesthere (mostly cousins... moreon that later). Despite the factthat I haven’t been to the landof my birth in a very long time,my daughter is planning on astop there during a Europeantrip next summer. She recentlydiscovered that she, like me, isa dual citizen. It has to do withthe fact that the Brits havealways considered me fullyBritish. My daughter is a dualcitizen because my year ofbirth occurred well before achange in citizenship require-ments. She was tickled by thisand was looking forward tothe advantages of having aUnited Kingdom passport asshe traveled across Europe

next summer...

...Most of those “advantages”disappeared last Thursday. When the UK voted to leavethe European Union – by a 52%to 48% margin – it ushered in awave of uncertainty that willtake months (if not years) toreach some degree of clarity.

Stock markets worldwideplummeted last Friday,

dropped even further this pastMonday, and stabilized a bit

on Tuesday. (The day Enigma“goes to press.”) The implica-tions for those traveling fromthe UK to its former EuropeanUnion-mates (or vice versa)are unknown. Current specula-tion is that neither the UK northe EU will require travel visasfrom the other. Both are huge-ly dependent on tourism andbusiness travel back and forth.Passports will no doubt berequired for anyone goingfrom one to the other. Thesmooth sailing between the UKand the countries remaining inthe EU is a thing of the past. Itsucks for my daughter... and alot of other people...

...The turnout for the national

What Brexit Means?

ENIGMA JULY 2016 8

Page 9: Enigma 7/01/16

referendum was 71.8%, withmore than 30 million peoplevoting. It was the highestturnout in a UK-wide votesince the 1992 general elec-tion. Voters were given twoclear choices: “Leave” or“Remain.” How completelyBritish. The referendum quick-ly gained the nickname,“Brexit” for “British Exit,”though numerous non-Britsthought some guy namedBrexit was running for office...

...On the surface, the UK’sdecision to Leave seems miredin fear, racism, xenophobia, and ignorance. Young votersfelt betrayed by the older gen-eration’s delusion of the long-past days of a formidableBritish Empire. The ironyescaped almost no one. Britishcolonialism ran rampantworldwide for centuries as the

Brits thrust their language andculture on those countries itsubjugated. Yet it was fear ofimmigration that triggered theUK’s exit from the EU. As Imentioned above, I haven’tbeen back to Bedford since Iwas in college. So I asked mycousin, Lisa (whom I recently“friended” on Facebook), whatshe though the implications of“the vote” would be in herlife...

…”I haven’t got a clue,” Lisatyped back. “It’s all unknownterritory at the moment. I did-n’t vote, but would have voted‘out’ if I had. I’m not racist, butwe are overrun with immi-grants. Our National HealthSystem is broken because ofthis. I have waited six monthsfor a simple procedure in thehospital. It was costing thecountry millions to stay in the

EU. Hopefully this will balanceout what we lose by not beingin it.” …

...Lisa pretty much nailed it. Noone in the United Kingdom hasa clue what the post-EU futurewill hold. There have beenrumors of an effort to getanother referendum in frontof the voters. There have alsobeen rumors of as many asnine current EU countriesworking on their own exitvotes. There has been specula-tion that the EU was planningto turn itself into some kind ofEuropean “superstate” with anactual central government, one army, one currency (theEuro is currently used by 19member countries), etc.Needless to say, the “super-state” plans are on hold fornow...

...I admit it seems like a totalcop-out to say that any addi-tional speculation is prema-ture. I wasn’t planning onreturning to Bedford any timesoon. Britain has neverclaimed to be a “melting pot”and has always been somewhathostile towards immigrants.Part of that comes with being asmall island nation. Part of itcomes with ruling the world atone time and now... so totallynot. The England I used to livein exists only in my memories.I hope my daughter gets to gothere someday and make somememories of her own. I hopethe country is safe and saneenough for her to do that... nomatter what kind of passportshe is carrying...

The Illinois lottery announced aman with the appropriate surnameGambles won the drawing for thesecond time — playing the exactsame numbers. Larry Gambles, 65, ofMatteson, won a $1,050,000 LuckyDay Lotto jackpot prize by matchingall five numbers in the June 7 draw-ing. Gambles said his numbers, 01-06-12-14-25, have proved lucky forhim in the past — including a previ-ous lotto drawing. “Nine years ago, Iwon $50,000 playing the numbersfrom the jerseys of my high schoolbasketball team. I’ve been playingthe same numbers ever since. I can’tbelieve they paid off again!”

Gambles said. The retired schooladministrator offered some advicefor other lottery jackpot hopefuls:“Pick your favorite numbers andstick with them. It worked for me!”Unfortunately for Gambles, sincethe state of Illinois still doesn’t havea budget, he won’t be getting paidoff any time soon.

Police in Colorado were met with asurprise when a group of people onhorseback passed through a DUIcheckpoint. Lakewood police sharedphotos of the three equestrian trav-elers and noted that even horses arerequired to adhere to the check-point. “Well, this was a first for aDUI checkpoint - but we are inGolden, so maybe we shouldn’t be

surprised...” they wrote in anothertweet. The Lakewood police did notreport arrests of any of the horse-back riders they encountered onWednesday. The Denver Postreported a 45-year-old Coloradoman was arrested on suspicion ofDUI while on horseback in 2013. I’msure that arrest was in the interestof public safety and not revenuegeneration, because of all the drunkequitation related deaths.

A taxpayer watchdog group called‘Open the Books’ has just publisheda report which shows that there arenow more non-military governmentemployees who carry guns thanthere are U.S. Marines. I know we asa country recently suffered a

tragedy involving a mass shooting, and I am not going to argue againstsome reasonable gun controlreform, but no one can deny theOlympic level of hypocrisy here. The“Militarization of America” reportfound civilian agencies spent $1.48billion on guns, ammunition, andmilitary-style equipment between2006 and 2014. So who is carrying allof these firearms? Well, for exam-ple, the Food and DrugAdministration includes 183 armedspecial agents. Health and HumanServices now has a special divisionof armed Inspector General Agents. The EPA spent $3.1 million on guns, ammo, and equipment, including

drones, night vision, camouflageand other deceptive equipment, andbody armor. In case they catch any-body dumping used motor oil in ariver, or something. Overall thereare now over 200,000 non-militaryfederal officers with arrest andfirearm authority, carrying aroundmilitary grade weapons and equip-ment, surpassing the 182,100 person-nel who are actively serving in theU.S. Marines Corps. Your govern-ment is trying to tell you that you,the citizenry, cannot be trusted withcertain types of firearms and certainamounts of ammunition, meanwhilefielding a literal army of bureau-crats and pencil-pushers armed withpump-action and semi-automaticshotguns, semi-automatic M&P15s,and H&K 416 rifles. Now don’t youfeel safer?

A Tesla owner in Kazakhstanshowed off his car’s ability to tra-verse a flooded tunnel and thevideo caught the attention of CEOElon Musk. Sanzhar Altayev posted avideo to YouTube showing whathappened when he drove his TeslaModel S through a flooded tunnelfilled with stalled and stranded cars.Altayev’s car begins to float and isable to make it to the other side ofthe flood, where it drives away ondry land. “When Tesla enters flood-ed tunnel it starts to float! Anyweather is grace with Tesla! Shameto skeptics!” Altayev wrote. Thevideo caught the attention of TeslaMotors CEO Elon Musk, who con-firmed the car’s capabilities. “We*def* don’t recommended this, butModel S floats well enough to turn itinto a boat for short periods of time.Thrust via wheel rotation,” Musktweeted.

A bounce house took flight from aNew York state family’s yard andsoared on the wind until eventuallycolliding with some power lines. Therented bounce house was beingused for a birthday party at aNiagara County home when a gust ofwind carried the inflatable structureaway while no children were inside, the residents said. A video capturedby the family shows the bouncehouse flying high into the air. “Iseveryone accounted for?” awoman’s voice asks in the video asthe bounce house soars overhead. The bounce house can then be seenflying toward some power lines anda transmission tower. “It’s going tohit the power lines!” a man’s voicesays. A mother wants $40 million frompeople who attended a party forfailing to protect her drunk daugh-ter. The New York mother is suingthe owners of a house in theHamptons and 100 unidentifiedguests because they did not realizethat her daughter drowned in apool. 29-years-old Olya Lipina diedduring an all night party. Her bodywas found only around noon thenext day, floating in the pool. Thedeath was ruled accidental. Now,her mother, Alla Lipina-Skyba fromBrooklyn, has filed a civil lawsuit. However, she is not only suing thehomeowners, Daniel and LindaFiner, and Laura Edith Kreft, but sheis also suing the 100 party goers, claiming that they were negligent byallowing her daughter to get sodrunk.

About ten years ago a stray dogwandered up my driveway. Littledid I know this scrawny, dirty, funny looking canine wouldbecome my beloved friend. I waspreparing to go on a motorcycletrip to Key West and just returnedfrom a friend’s house. I pulled inthe driveway and as I stopped thecar I saw this rough looking dog“lumbering” up the driveway. Iasked my girlfriend suspiciously(she had a habit of rescuing dogs)“Where’d that dog come from?” shesaid she didn’t know. Of course weput some food out for him and sheput a blanket down by the garagefor him. He ignored the blanketand slept on the concrete frontporch right by the front door.

Luckily it was April and it was notvery cool. I was very busy prepar-ing for the trip and did not have

much time to attend to our caninehobo. I did look out the front doorand saw the dog roaming the neigh-

borhood with one of my dogs.

This was the beginning of the“dawn patrol”. I told my girlfriend“Hey, Fido’s out there playing withDaisy.” She asked, “What did youcall him? “ The name stuck. Wellyou know the old saying, “Onceyou name ‘em, you’re keeping ‘em.”That’s what happened. While I wason my trip I called my girlfriendand asked what she wanted to dowith the new dog. Dumb question.

When I got home the new dog‘Fido” and I quickly bonded. He atea lot and his weight jumped rapid-ly from thirty something to arounda hundred. He was not overweight. He was just a big dog. The vet said

nied by Daisy my small terrier andBuddy the Chihuahua. Daisy wouldlead as if the scout making sure noenemy squirrels were waiting toambush us. Fido would stay closerto me as I was the Captain. I wouldfrequently carry Buddy as he wasnot very good at staying in forma-tion. Meanwhile Blue or back inthe day Sally, and or Puck broughtup the rear. It was apparent Fidogreatly enjoyed these outings. Ourmorning walks became a relaxingmorning routine especially after Ihad retired and was not so rushed.Just this spring on a peaceful morn-ing I realized how much I enjoyedthese walks with The Dawn Patrol.I didn’t know then it was all aboutto change.

Fido had another medical problemlast year (2015). I came home onenight to find him having troublebreathing. He went outside and itquickly got worse. I rushed him tothe emergency animal hospital. They sedated him and got him sta-bilized. I was very scared. The nextday the vets told me he had aparalysis of the larynx and wouldprobably require surgery but hewas too overweight. Fido did notlook overweight but the surgeonwanted me to get 20-30 pounds offof him. I had to put him on specialfood and greatly reduce his foodintake. He lost weight. It was obvi-ous he felt better. He now ran and

abused him. Now just to look atFido he appeared to be “not toobright”. However, he quicklylearned that as there were severaldogs in my “pack” if he wanted toget attention he would bring me or

guests a shoe. He would not chewthe shoe or damage it (unless youcount a little drool as damage) butbring it to you happily wagging histail. When you tried to get the shoehe would quickly lower his headand move away as if to play keepaway. This turned into a ritualgame whenever I returned home. One day he was carrying a pair ofmy boots in his mouth! Sometimeshe would sneak the shoe outsideand later I would find my some-times wet or cold shoe abandonedin the yard. What I sometimes con-sidered a bother I now sorely miss.

Fido liked to do “puppy rides”(going for a car or particularly ajeep ride) where he could sit in thefront seat and see out. I’ll alwaysremember one morning when Ipulled up to the window at aHardee’s drive-thru a girl workingthe window yelled to her cowork-ers, “Come look at this dog!” Hewas a BIG dog.

Fido made me laugh on so manyoccasions. One I particularlyremember happened one day as Iwas sitting outside reading. I hadFido on a leash. Suddenly Fidoleaped up and before I could grabthe leash he was running after apassing jogger. Now Fido wouldn’tbite a person. If people asked if hewould bite I’d reply, “He’ll bite a

biscuit.” However, this hapless jog-ger had his ear-buds in and wasoblivious to me yelling “No Fido”and “He’s friendly!” as Fido rapidlyapproached from behind. When hesaw this hundred- pound brindle

colored mass coming at him he seta new personal best for clearingmy cul-de-sac. As he turned thecorner I couldn’t help but burst outlaughing. Another Fido event thatI’ll never forget.

Eventually I would name my groupof dogs “The Dawn Patrol” becausethey reminded me of a World WarI airplane formation. Every morn-ing Blue, my three-legged dogwould wake me up early to go out.Fido would of course go accompa-

he was malnourished but like I saidhe quickly made up for that. Wekept the dogs inside the house incrates when we weren’t home. Inoticed Fido seemed very uncom-fortable in his crate. The problemwas the malnutrition had causedhis knee joints and legs to notdevelop properly. He could not liecomfortably in the crate. I immedi-ately decided no more crate forhim. However, due to the lack ofnutrition when he was young healways walked kind of bowlegged. When he ran it was in lopingstrides instead of fluid movementsbut it didn’t seem to bother him.

When Fido was around two yearsold it was apparent he was havingknee problems. He had surgerieson both knees at two differenttimes. After one of the surgeries Icould tell that his breathing wasnot right. He was breathing veryshallowly. I tried to not panic asone of the vet assistants had thevet look at him. The Vet tried to actcalm as after listening to hisbreathing she ordered him a shotand eventually he started breath-ing better. However, after we leftthere my girlfriend thought hestopped breathing and stopped atout regular vet’s office to have himchecked. Eventually the “BigGaloot” as I affectionately calledhim was walking great after physi-cal therapy. On that note it washilarious watching that big dogdoing hydrotherapy. It’s like hewas walking/ dog paddling on atreadmill in a big aquarium happilysplashing forward. Luckily for Fidohe didn’t have to swim because Ihad found out he couldn’t.

One day we decided to take oleFido swimming. He waded in withme and when he got to a drop offhe just sank. Thank god the waterwasn’t very deep. I had to grab himand pull him back to the shallowwater. Lesson learned.

Fido had received some hardknocks, sadly literally, prior tocoming to my house. His teethwere crooked, he had a big bumpon his head which the vet thoughtwas caused by some kind of blunttrauma and he looked slightlycross-eyed. We never knew if hegot hit by a car or if someone had

Many times I have told peopleabout Fido and all we’ve beenthrough and they often say “He waslucky he came to your driveway. Idisagree. I was lucky he came upmy driveway

There is an old saying “All Dogs goto Heaven “. Fido sure deserves it.

Thanks so much to Dr. YvonneWard of Northgate AnimalHospital, Fido’s vet for her greatmedical care and personal sympa-thy and attention during a devas-tating time.

ed time was set and thanks to agreat neighbor who hardly knewme Fido went to the vet for hisfinal time in the back of a vanwhere he had plenty of room. Fidoleft this world on May 25th at

approximately 4pm. with the peo-ple closest to him present. He wasburied in my yard on his Scooby-Doo blanket along with a stuffedsqueaky toy and one of my old ten-nis shoes. I gave him a last hugbefore we covered him up.

The Dawn Patrol still goes out butthey don’t stay gone so long. Icatch myself unconsciously lookingaround for Fido before realizinghe’s gone. I still get out of bed try-ing to avoid his big body but he’snot there physically. I miss him soterribly.

There is so much more I could tellyou about my friend and faithfulcompanion Fido but there are

space requirements. I just miss myfriend so much. If you are a petperson after you read this giveyour pet some attention. Take yourdog(s) for a walk whenever youcan. Spend some playtime with

played more and could climb thedeck stairs without panting.

Then late in April fate dealt Fido acruel hand. One night he was pant-ing very hard and I knew he feltbad. The following Monday I tookhim to the vet. He had blood workand x-rays done. The vet, Dr.Yvonne Ward, (of whom I cannotsay enough good things) warnedme about what she thought theprognosis might be. I took himback the next day for an ultra-sound. After the ultrasound shegave me the bad news. Fido hadcancer and it had spread to hisliver. She told me he only had aweek to a month to live. I was dev-astated. I was in denial at first. Then I vowed to let Fido have asgood a life as I could in the time wehad. We spent a lot of time sittingout in the yard. That was one of hisfavorite things. I sat in myAdirondack chair and he laid on hisScooby-Doo afghan. Several nightswe were out there until midnightor later. One night when he wasreally having a bad time we wereout there all night. I had peoplestay with him while I was at work.Time flew by while I was with himand dragged while I wasn’t. Finallyafter almost a month Fido didn’twant to eat. More telling he did notwant to go out. Up to that day if Iwent to the front door and asked ifhe wanted to go out he would leapup and run to the door. I had tocall the vet and make the worstdecision a person has to makeregarding their pet. I had vowedthat once he did not have quality oflife I would have to let him go butthis was about my friend and com-panion. It was horrible. The dread-

The Passing ofA True Legend

The week started out on a heavynote. Pat Summitt, legendarywomen’s basketball coach at theUniversity of Tennessee passedaway at the age of 64.

I remember as a kid when ourfamily moved from up north tothe Tennessee valley. It wasquite a culture shock for sure, but being the new kid in a newcity/state I almost immediatelybegan cheering for “my” home-town team in college sports theUT Vols.

That ended quickly. At a youngage I was turned off by the Vols.It had nothing initially to do withthe teams but the fans. Still tothis day I have never understood

fair-weather or bandwagon fans. You know who you are. Youcheer for the team when theywin but after only one loss youturn on the team, the coachesand so on and so forth. My firstwitnessing of this was when BillBattle was the head coach of thefootball team.

“Back in the day” the Vols wentto a bowl game every year –unlike today where everyoneseems to go to a bowl and theyseem to be running out of teamsto put in all the bowl games now,it was a select few that went to abowl game. During the Battle erathe Vols never went to one of the“big” bowl games but they playedin ones like the Liberty Bowl andDave Weinthal

Page 24: Enigma 7/01/16
Page 25: Enigma 7/01/16

smaller ones like that. This did-n’t sit well with boosters whothought “their” Vols should beatBear Bryant and the like everyseason. I was put off when thenews reported that movingtrucks were sent to Battle’shouse after the season. He didn’torder them an angry booster did.

And then there’s the hardcorefan who despite his or her teamwinning would cuss because“they sucked’ because they didn’twin by 30 points. I realize allsports teams have those kinds offans but where I live I’m literallyengulfed by them. And the ironyof that is a lot of these hardcorefans not only did not attend UT,a lot did not even attend college.

As I got into college the intensityheated up as there was alwaysthat “little brother” feelingbetween Tennessee and other UTcampuses like UTC and UTMartin. And the whole time noone was ever happy with thefootball or basketball team –except one – the Lady Vols.

I was never much a fan of ladiesbasketball or women’s sports ingeneral. But I started playingattention to Pat Summitt. Whileevery sports program in collegewas getting in trouble for grades, discipline and all out hooliganry. It seemed like on almost a week-ly basis we would read about aUT player being arrested orkicked off the team. But not theLady Vols and women’s team ingeneral. Not only was Summitt awinner on court but off as well. The one shining good example ofsports at UT and just about everyother sports program was PatSummitt’s.

Summitt’s team except for theirwins never drew any attentionoutside of Knoxville except insports circles. As the behavior inmen’s sports got worse as well asthe men’s GPA women’s sports –especially basketball started to

get more and more popular. Andthere are many reasons for that.

Sure, it’s easy to cheer for a win-ner. We all love that and that’swhat Summitt was – a winner. But she actually redefined thesport. By the 1990s men’s basket-ball was basically a glorified ver-sion of every man for himself. There was and is no real strategyjust a bunch of individuals goingfor a dunk being a ball hog.Everyone wanted to be aSportsCenter highlight.

The woman’s game became somuch more superior because ofoffensive strategies, ball han-dling and actually knowing howto take a jump shot - basic bas-ketball fundamentals like pssingthe ball to an open (wo)man. They play as a team not a bunchof individuals. And this showsnot only on the court but thecommunity as well. Coaches likePat Summitt are responsible forthis as they mold the young mindof the young ladies into responsi-

towards men’s college athletics(trust me, I’m still a fan) the moreand more I paid attention to PatSummitt and the Lady Vols. Sheis one of the few people and theleader of a program that I cansay nothing negative about. PatSummitt was a class act and awinner.

I had my first encounter withSummitt in the late ‘90s as theLady Vols were in the SEC basket-ball tournament I was covering. There was an aura around her.Everyone seemed to be mystifiedby her and she had this sterngaze as she coached. Despite thestern, ice cold gaze she wasalways very cordial to thosearound her and the press. Thisshowed because you will neverread anything negative about heror her teams.

I got to go a handful of Lady Volsgames and her reception was asif the Pope or some other digni-tary were present. She neverseemed phased by the adorationand her ego was always in check.People could learn a lot from herby the way she treated everyone. There are not enough goodwords in my vocabulary todescribe my admiration of

ble adults. I never heard of anyscholastic issues with her playersor any behavioral issues. Theremay have been one or two afterthey got out of school and intothe real work but never on Pat’swatch.

The more and more distain I had

Summitt.

And while at times I thought she

was stoic she would do some-thing completely out of the ordi-nary to show she was regular folkand one of the gals – a truesport. Back in the day whenBruce Pearl was coaching themen’s basketball team he showedup to support the Lady Vols onegame painted orange cheering onthe team. Summitt took note. She returned the favor showingup to a men’s game dressed as acheerleader and sang “RockyTop”.

We all know her accomplish-ments and titles and how sheactually for all intents and pur-posed created the lady’s basket-ball program.

She and I do share one thing incommon. I, too coached lady’sbasketball and actually have abetter winning percentage. I wasundefeated as a coach. Granted,it was one game and I was in sev-enth grade.

The coach of my junior high boysand girls team was called upon tohelp officiate the game because

of some unforeseen reason oneof the officials couldn’t make itand unless one was found the

game would be cancelled.Having been trained in officiat-ing and the fact his father is actu-ally in the NBA Hall of Fame, ourcoach put on the stripes. Hehanded me his clipboard and toldme I was in charge. This was inthe era when women’s basketballwas played with six players withthree on each side of the center-line. Very old school and archa-ic by today’s standards I realize. We won, so I do have one thingin common with Summitt.

Lady Vols basketball hasn’t beenthe same since she retired fol-lowing the 2011 season. The LadyVols have been the one UT teamI have always cheered for –except when they played myalma mater. Not that I was evera big fan of lady’s basketball butI used to pay attention to theteam because of Summitt forwhat she meant to sports, theuniversity and the world as awhole. There will never beanother like her.

“So, who are you vot-ing for?” Is the ques-tion I’ve been askedmost lately. Well, it’shard to say, but Idon’t believe much ofwhat I see in themedia or on the vari-ous candidate web-sites, on either side. Idon’t trust careerpoliticians, the sys-tem, or even if myvote will be counted(a voting machinehacked or some voterfraud event). Most votersagree - the game is rigged, the media is jacked, andpoliticians never do whatthey say anyway. Why vote?

Yes, I know it is my civicduty, I vote, and agree to themajority rule, even thoughmy candidate or propositiondoesn’t win. I must, we allmust agree in advance tothat, and when we partici-pate in all these shenanigans, that’s basically what we areagreeing to. What if I toldyou that philosophicallyspeaking that; Our right tovote, it is trick? Okay, I won’tgo that far, but let me helpyou out of your naïve brain-washed thought process for aminute.

Last time the Democratsswore that Barack Obamawas the best person for thejob; Hillary took a far second

place, as Obama and Oprahtold us that Bill Clinton was aracist. Now the Democratssay that Hillary is the bestperson for the job, really?Last time they said she wasn’teven as good as Obama. If soand since Obama has beendisaster, now they want theirlast time - distant secondplace - candidate to continuetheir democrat tradition. Tothis I would say; No ThankYou.

Now they tell us that Hillaryis great for women’s rightsand Bill Clinton will help herwith the economy? Well, firstoff I’d had enough of leftisteconomics and when itcomes to women’s rights -screw Bill - no don’t. Heshould be up on charges likethe other Bill, Bill Cosby. I’vehad enough of the leftistmedia propping up ridiculouscandidates and telling usthey are the best for

America. They say Hillary hasexperience - experience atwhat I ask; “corruption, usurping authority, selling us

out to a global gov-ernment overlay?WTH? No ThankYou.” Am I beingtoo harsh? Maybe, but at the CoffeeShop, localStarbucks, that’sbasically whateveryone was say-ing, mind you I wasat the LibertarianTable group, a cou-ple of Democratsand one hardenedRepublican. What

do you think?

A lot of my formative yearswere spent listening to theradio either as an activity orpassively as I did homeworkrode/drove in a car – you getthe idea. Two bands that Iremember most from my youthof turning the dial are theDoobie Brothers and Journey.

I have a longer history with theDoobies. They were the coolband when I was still in ele-mentary school. Just the name“doobie” was enough.Granted, we were still kind ofyoung to grasp the slang fromwhich the name came from andthose that did in class wereconsidered the “cool” kids andwe pretended we knew butnever participated (honestly).I remember trying to sing alongto “Black Water” with my budsRobbie and Eric but didn’t doas good a job. The Doobieshad a distinctive sound thatwas more rocking than a lot of

the stuff that was on the radioat the time like Elton John andSeals & Croft. For referencethis was the beginning of theera know as “yacht rock” thatwe were stuck with until discobefore punk and new wavesaved us.

As I got into high school Iremember a great change insound as the band soundedsmoother or more “jazzy”. Aguy named Michael McDonaldtook over for original leadsinger and band co-founderTom Johnston. I wasn’t surewhy the change in singers andsince this was the pre-Wikipedia days had no realdesire to do anything but takeit at face value.

The Doobie Brothers blew upagain this time even biggerwith tons of radio airplay bestselling singles and even aGrammy. McDonald, a much in

demand singer for duets andbacking vocals – some may ormay not remember him fromhis days with Steely Dan.

After about three or four yearsof constant success and over-saturation the Doobies dis-solved. Rock and roll went onand actually got more diversi-fied. The Doobies did reformin 1987 with Johnston back atthe helm and started touring arecording again. IN my opin-ion they were never the same.Time had passed them by. Ihad moved on. My movedthem into my nostalgia folder. To be honest the less I listen to

them the more I appreciatethem more when I do hear oneof their songs. Good memo-ries.

I had a love/hate relationshipwith Journey. I really lovedtheir rocking songs but loathedtheir ballads. I’m not a softguy. I also thought Steve Perryhad a bad haircut as well – asif he were a member of SpinalTap. I really hated Perry’s solostuff especially “Oh Sherrie”.When I was in school I workedat a restaurant with two girlsnamed Sherrie when the songcame out and sure enough I lit-erally heard suitors sing the

damn song to serenade them.Yep, I was literally living in aRyan Reynolds rom-com.

But when they rocked – theyrocked. Two of my favoritesongs are “Wheels in the Sky”and my go-to party song,“Anyway You Want It”. I reallydo love the latter. Whenever itcomes on the radio I will auto-matically look around theroom wherever I am, even ifit’s just in my car start wigglingmy shoulders and yell in mybest Rodney Dangerfield voice,“Hey! We’re all gonna getlaid!” In case you missed thepop culture reference that’sfrom “Caddyshack” that fea-tured the song and the millionone-liners from the legendarycomic. The song always bringsa smile to my face because ofthat. It’s a great rock partysong up there with Kiss’ “Rockand Roll All Night”.

Much like the Doobies, Journeyran out of steam as the ‘80sprogressed. Perry had thehuge solo album and guitaristNeal Schon did some work with

Jan Hammer who is mostfamous for the theme of“Miami Vice”. The band was onhiatus from ’87 to ’95. Whenthey got back together Perrywas no longer with them anddrummer Steve Smith departedas well. Their fortunes werefew and far between as thelandscape or rock changeddrastically as alternative rockruled the charts. They becamemore of a curiosity and nostal-gia act than a force to be reck-oned. After using two singerthey did what bands seem todo this day and searchedYouTube for their new leadsinger. That is where theyfound the Pilipino-born ArnelPineda. There was a documen-tary done about this and is aninteresting watch so I won’tspoil it for you. Pineda broughtenergy to the band that hadbeen missing for decades and ayouthful vigor that made thebad sound more like Journeyagain instead of a really goodJourney cover band. To makematters even better he couldhit the same notes as Perry andquite frankly sounds an awful

lot like him.

Who thought I would ever seethose two titans perform, espe-cially on stage together? Myhigh school and college dayswere lean so I could not seethem then and quite franklythey were rarely within drivingdistance. But that’s one of thenicer things about getting older– they along with a lot of actsfrom my child and early adult-hood tour together now. It’slike buying that cassette or CDthat had two albums on it fromtwo different artitsts. Back inthe bay you would find thoseCDs in discount stores likeHill’s or Kmart or in the cutoutbin at Record Bar. Journey, TheDoobie Brothers and DaveMason played to a full houserecently at LakewoodAmphitheatre in Atlanta.

Mason opened the show. He’sone of the co-founders of the

popular ‘60s band Traffic thatalso featured Steve Winwoodand Jim Capaldi. The rock androll Hal of Famer had a rela-tively successful solo career

with one big hit “We JustDisagree” and despite still writ-ing and recording he is oftenmore of a curiosity or theanswer to a trivia question. He’s the guy that everyoneknows o him but aren’t fullyaware of his music.

Mason is much like the charac-ter “Where’s Waldo?” He hasrecorded, written with some ofthe biggest names in music his-tory all after his songwritingprowess and guitar work.During the course of his 50year career he’s been in thestudio with the Stones,Hendrix, Clapton, McCartneyand George Harrison to name afew.

Mason’s short set was punctu-ated by one familiar song afteranother and if he didn’t writethem he played on the originalrecording. In the mix werethree Traffic songs “Feelin’

Alright” made more famous byJoe Cocker, his solo work and“All Along the Watchtower” thesong Jimi Hendrix madefamous that was written by Bob

Dylan. What most people don’tknow or remember is Masonplayed on the recording com-ing up with the opening guitarriff.

Mason and his band were tight.Unfortunately the sun was stillout when they started and peo-ple were still arriving andmulling around, not giving himthe attention he deserved. Hedid well despite the transientcrowd.

Next was The Doobie Brotherscomplete with original front-man, writer and guitarist TomJohnston. Also in tow wereoriginal guitarist PatrickSimmons and keyboard playerJohn McFee who has been withthe Doobies since 1979.

The original lineup and songsare less polished and more live

them perform with Lou Gramm. But when I closed my eyes Ireally couldn’t tell the differ-ence without Steve Perry.Unlike other acts it seemedoriginal instead of karaokeversion of the band.

The band of course was tight. With Smith back in the fold itwas pretty much the lineupfrom 1980 and their so-called“glory days”. Pineda brings ayouthful energy to the bandthat might have been otherwisemissing. Purists will still bitchto a degree because Perry is nolonger singing but the averagefan will not be able to tell thedifference.

Neal Schon took center stage anumber of times with his handyguitar work. Many generationsgrew up on his riffs and chordsas he helped define the soundof the band.

The set started song with

I’ve read their story and like Iwrote earlier I even watchedthe documentary on the bandfinding Pineda on YouTube. This incarnation of Journeywas special to watch for manyreasons namely the return oforiginal drummer Steve Smithto the fold. Smith left the band20 years ago but due to legalissues with Deen Castronovorejoined the band permanentlylast year.

Listening to Pineda sing is trulyamazing – at least to me. Ihave always been one of thosewho don’t like bands that losetheir famous lead singer. Whatwould the Stones be withoutMick or IXS without MichaelHutchence. The latter triedwith and it did not work well.Van Halen tried it but there aredefinitely two divided campson that. I saw Foreigner earli-er in the year and while it wasgood it just wasn’t the same tome. Of course I never saw

than the Michael McDonald eraDoobies. The legendary rock-ers put on a clinic as they asthey were in full stride fromthe beginning of “Jesus Is JustAlright” to the last chord of“Listen to the Music”. Theband performed heavily fromtheir early work and evenworked in a Michael McDonaldera song, “Takin’ It To theStreets”. All the favorites werethere such as “Black Water”,“Long Train Runnin’” and“China Grove” as well as songslike “The Doctor” when theyreformed with pretty muchtheir original lineup in the late‘80s.

The show was a lot of fun towatch as many had been lulledinto complacency with theband’s late ‘70s, early ‘80ssongs with McDonald that weregreat in their own right butlacked the energy of the bandfrom its inception. Despiteover 45 years of rock and rollthey still know how to engagethe crowd.

Journey was the headliner. Ihad never seen them performlive before I was either tooyoung or a poor college kidbefore Perry left the band andthey went onto rock and rolllimbo.

Rhino

I apprehensively slipped TheMonkees’ new album GoodTimes into my CD player. Yousee, I have been a lifelong fanof the band. I still remember asa toddler my mother setting mein front of our Tv next to myteenage sister as the RV showcame on. I was instantlyhooked. I could sing along pret-ty much word for word withsongs like “Stepping Stone”,“Daydream Believer” andPleasant Valley Sunday” before Iknew my ABCs and 123s. I wasan unabashed fan even as crit-ics started to pile on them call-ing them the “Prefab Four”.They fought back learning toplay their instruments andtoured, and eventually wrotetheir own songs even thoughthey did not have the sameimpact as the songs that putthem in the public eye.

I bought Justus a while back. That was The Monkees’ lastrelease in 1996 of original mate-rial. It was hard to listen to attimes and that’s a lot comingfrom someone who has been anunabashed fan longer than mostof you have been alive. Thealbums sounded an awful lotlike they had a chip on theirshoulder still trying to prove tothe world they were legitimatemusicians and songwriters.

The Monkees needed to realize

that they are loved for whomthey are (were) – four funnyguys with different personali-ties who made a generationlaugh and sang some of themost infectious pop music everrecorded. We didn’t care if theyplayed their own instruments orwrote their own songs. Ofcourse these are the same crit-ics who call Elvis Presley the“King” even though he rarelywrote any of his songs or playedon his albums and praised allthe Motown acts who had asome of the best songwriters inmusic history. The Motownsound was engineered just likeThe Monkees except they had achoreographer for their stageshow and were all vocal groups– not out and out musicians. There were a few like MarvinGaye but not the Miracles,Supremes, Four Tops orTemptations. There was a littlebit of a double standard. Ofcourse a lot of that was jealousyover the fact The Monkees outsold the Beatles – which in away they were parodying ini-tially as “The Monkees” werelike a serialized version of “AHard Days Night”.

Much like fellow ‘60s pop cul-ture icon Adam West who foryears fought the “Batman”stereotype until coming to gripswith it a quarter of a centuryago, The Monkees seem to final-ly have come to grips with theirplace in pop culture history andmultiple generations love themand the songs they sang. Theyfinally realized they did nothave to prove anything to any-one and it showed on GoodTimes.

Good Times by far their bestalbum since their heyday of themid ‘60s. The album is a hybridof unreleased songs and newones written by some of today’smusical equivalent to the writ-

ers of their original hits. PaulWeller (The Jam, The StyleCouncil), Rivers Cuomo(Weezer), Noel Gallagher(Oasis), Ben Gibbard (Death CabFor Cutie), Andy Partridge (XTC),Adam Schlesinger (Fountains ofWayne) as well as songs byDolenz, Tork and Nesmith.

Infectious pop tunes fill thealbum like “She Makes MeLaugh” that is as close to awarm weather anthem and singalong you’re going to find. Thatbeing said Good Times is farfrom perfect. At times I thoughtI was listening to Mickey Dolenzand the Monkees as he monop-olizes the singing on the album.I finally realized I actuallymissed the late Davy Joneswhose ballads and pop songsperfectly balanced Dolenz’s popand rock vocal stylings. Themix was off as well. On toomany songs Dolenz’s vocalswere too far forward in the mixand comes off as if he wassinging karaoke instead offronting the band.

Jones makes a surprise appear-ance on the album singing leadon “Love to Love” an unreleasedsong originally written by Neil

Diamond and recorded 48 yearsago. Nesmith and Tork sing onesong a piece to break themonopoly with Nesmith singingthe slower, country-tinged bal-lad “Me and Magdalena” thatalso featured Dolenz written byGibbard.

“Whatever’s Right” the onlyBoyce/Hart song on the album isone of the best as it truly harksback to the origins of TheMonkees. Boyce and Hartwrote some if not most of myfavorite songs of The Monkeesand this fits great. The onlydrawback is the song is almostover before it begins as it clocksin at two minutes. “Our OwnWorld” is written by Schlesingerwho also produced the projectand it showcases the song-writer’s ability to understandwho the song was written forinstead of having the artistadapt to the writer. This song islight, poppy and catchy, not tomention charismatic and per-fectly compliments what TheMonkees are. Schlesinger wasable to capture the essence ofwhat The Monkees are andindeed gives the band the mate-rial they so longingly deserve.

Complacency is one of theworst things that can happen toa musician. Music is fueled byjoy, celebration, anger, fear andjust about any emotion but notcomplacency. Little Birds is thesecond release by Rick Bowersand the Majors. Having knownBowers for years back when hewas a young rock and roller thefirst release of his current bandwas hard to listen to at timesbecause of what I am complain-ing about.

There is emotion in music –good or bad. When songssound like you’re singing abouthow great everything is andhow you love your wife andkids (not literally but you getthe idea). That emotion wasmissing from the first album.Luckily Bowers learned fromthat mistake.

Little Birds is an upbeat rockingalbum that harnesses a lot ofenergy and comes across withsome really good rock songs. That being said some songsseem to have too much going onlike “Blue Eyes Blue”. There isso much instrumentation goingon that it is almost overwhelm-ing and almost overpowersBowers’ vocals that seem tohave a renewed energy.

“Stay With Me” is a charismatic“dirty rocker that assures theband is ready to rock and notrest on its laurels. Ironically(maybe not) the songs on thealbum remind me of JohnCafferty and the Beaver BrownBand from the Eddie and theCruisers soundtrack era mixingrock and blues in a way thatthey compliment each otherinstead of canceling each otherout.

“Little Birds” is as an upbeatpoppy song that could havebeen fleshed out a little betterwith more harmonies but as awhole is a fun song to listen to.

While the album is a good listenit does suffer from a couple ofshortfalls. The mix is too busyat times. There is a lot going onin the songs at times. Some ofthe songs could have benefitedfrom a simpler or more strippeddown mix. There are so manyplayers on some of the songsthat instead of diversifying whatthey do they at times canceleach other out as they seem tobe prone to playing over eachother. But then again that couldme and I’m picky. On somesongs it admittedly works fineothers not so much.

Bowers has come a long wayfrom his early days in bandslike Running Live that manyprobably don’t remember orknow about. His early stufffrom that era featured somebrilliant rock songs and withLittle Birds he has been able tomature as a musician while notsounding old and tired. Notperfect by any stretch of theimagination, but who is? This iswell worth a listen.
