There were two significant

'firsts' as far as the numbers

for the year 2014. One hap-

pened December 13, 2014, 12-13-

14 and the other was the

longest night in decades. The

year 2014 was about getting in

touch with the deeper mean-

ing of life and analyzing your

personal situation. However,

the Universal energy for 2015

is extremely different and

should prove to be an unusu-

ally lucrative time for most

people in the next few

months.

If you are open to receiving

wealth and taking advantage

of promising opportunities

this can very well be your year

for turning your finances

around to a more positive

flow. Every nine years we

(mankind) collectively have

the opportunity to take

advantage of the special posi-

tive energy that flows from

Universal Source in the way of

wealth, success and business

savvy.

CCHHAARRTTSS:: UUNNIIVVEERRSSAALL YYEEAARRwwiitthh tthhee 88 EEnneerrggyy

• 1961 was pure 80/8 energy

(this year was pregnant with

possibilities and marked a

new beginning for money

issues)

• 1889, 1898, 1988 and 1997

were concentrated 8 energy

wealth, success, business

savvy, money, material gain

• 1952, 1970 and 1979 were all

17/8 or 71/8 energy individual

or personal analysis of

wealth, success, business

savvy, money and material

gain

• 1907, 1943, 2006 were all 26

or 62/8 energy finding bal-

ance, cooperation, and using

arbitration tactics in a respon-

sible way focused on family

and close circle of friends in

order to gain wealth, success,

business savvy, money and

material gain

• 1925 and 2024 are a very

unique 44/8 master energy

extremely practical, hard-

working approach to acquir-

ing wealth, business savvy,

success, money and material

gain... in the year 2024

extreme hard work will be the

only way to attain the attrib-

utes of the 8 energy of wealth,

money and success

• 1916, 1934, 2015, 2033 are all a

35 or 53/8 energy using a cre-

ative and fun approach to

finding wealth, success, busi-

ness savvy, money and materi-

al gain while taking advantage

of the many opportunities that

come along... this year, 2015

and the year 2033 to come are

unique in that they should

bring money and success with

less effort than one would

usually experience plus the

possibilities of many really

good opportunities.

In past years with energy sim-

ilar to this year lets look back

and see how this energy was

enjoyed as far as historical

success. In the year 1916 Albert

Einstein completed his "theory

of relativity". 1934 marked the

"First New Deal" which was

the first big step toward end-

ing the Great Depression

which was from 1920 through

1940.

By the end of 2014 we have

seen a slow and steady

increase in the economy with

jobs beginning to open up

again. Economists predict this

trend to continue its uphill

climb this year. Time will tell.

The Universal energy is there

to spur this along so hopefully

the experts are correct and

things in general will get bet-

ter.

ENIGMA JANUARY 1 2015 4

Meaning of the Year2015 - What to Expect

By the Numbers

Page 5: Enigma 1/01/15

Help is there from Universal

energy this year to boost you

in the area of your personal

finances and abilities to gain

success. How you can best use

this energy now becomes

more personal. This is how it

works. Each one of us has

what is called "Personal Year

Energy". This energy or a little

extra boost should be a signif-

icant help if used wisely. To

make the best use of your own

energy you must have infor-

mation.

To find your own Personal

Year you just need to do a lit-

tle simple math. The formula

is the number of the month

you were born added to the

number of the day you were

born plus this years' 8. So, if

you were born on January 1st

for instance you would add

1+1+8 which is 10. Reduce your

answer to a single digit which

in this case is 1+0=1 and this

single digit is your Personal

Year Energy. As another exam-

ple, if you were born on

December 31st you would then

add 12+31+8=51. Reducing this

down to a single digit would

be 5+1=6 with 6 as your

Personal Year Energy in 2015.

The following Personal Year

Chart will give you the mean-

ing of your own number and

how it relates to the 8 energy

of the year 2015. Add your

month and day to 8 and then

look up the single digit you

find in the following chart.

PPEERRSSOONNAALL YYEEAARR CCHHAARRTT

1. This is your year to use your

own initiative on your behalf

as far as your finances are

concerned. It will have extra

drive to take the lead and use

y our own creativity toward

financial success and an

increase in your material

wealth. You are on your own

right now so your best bet is

to follow your own instincts.

2. This is the year of coopera-

tion with others and finding

the peaceful solution to all sit-

uations. To make the best use

of your financial success this

year it is wise for you to listen

to the advise of others and be

the support to their efforts

rather than taking the leader-

ship role. Opportunities that

come your way can be best

used with the assistance of

others. You must find the bal-

ance in all things to increase

your wealthy at this time.

year is your best road to suc-

cess. If you are a person of

faith then rely more heavily

on this during this time period

than usual. At any rate, have

faith in your own abilities to

decipher your best course of

action. Find time for yourself

so you can think the course

you are currently taking.

8. Money, money, money is on

your mind this year. If you

relax and use your own cre-

ative ideas you should do

well. You should be making

very positive steps toward

your personal success and

material gains this year. Hard

work is always a part of gain-

ing wealth but this period of

time for you more about using

your talents wisely. Financial

issues should flow naturally

for you this year.

9. Thinking about the better-

ment of your environment

and the well-being of others

will help you make the best

use of the burst of energy

toward your financial affairs

during this time period. Have

compassion for others, for

your community and fellow-

man. Helping others or even

volunteering in your commu-

nity should help more than

working hard on your own

financial stream of income.

This is your year to make a

difference for others.

There you have it, the unique

energy of 2015 and how to

make the best use of this little

boost toward your personal

wealth and success. Enjoy this

year and put it to good use.

- Penny L. Lee

3. Creativity reigns supreme

for you this year especially in

the area of your finances. Use

you instincts and your intu-

ition and let your unique

ideas shine. Appreciation of

what you already have and a

respect for the beauty in all

things will increase your

potential to attract money

into your life this year.

4. Look on the practical side

of things especially where it

relates to how you earn and

use your money. Hard work

and wise management of your

financial affairs will help you

toward the success you desire,

especially during this next

year.

5. The problem you may face

this year is an over-abun-

dance of opportunities. Use

your own intuition and weigh

your opportunities well

before leaping. Choose the

best one or two and concen-

trate on these to make the

best use of this years unique

momentum toward financial

success. If you leap into each

new interesting opportunity

you will sabotage yourself and

render all of your efforts inef-

fective.

6. Your family and close circle

of friends play an important

part in your success and abili-

ty to attract money this year.

It will be your responsibility

to look out for your loved

ones and help or make deci-

sions on their behalf during

this time period. Ignoring your

responsibilities will adversely

affect your road to success.

7. Analyzing any opportunities

that may come your way this

Every American fears the words taxaudit.

A letter from the I.R.S., especiallyone ordering a tax audit, willunnerve even the calmest person. But, for a small business owner whodoes all of their own recordkeepingit's not just scary, it could spell dis-aster.

If you receive an I.R.S. audit letter, call your tax accountant and set animmediate appointment; represent-ing clients at tax audits is part of atax professional's job. It will beyour job to locate and furnish all ofthe documents needed to win thataudit. If you have kept audit-proofrecords, that will be easy.Because most small business own-ers have no bookkeeping training, few realize how easy it is to keepaudit-proof records. Some end upturning recordkeeping into a com-plicated computer-driven chore, and many simply ignore everythinguntil tax time.

Business recordkeeping doesn'thave to be complicated or time con-suming. There are only two thingsyou need to do to make beating atax audit easy. The first is to adopta recordkeeping system that issuper simple; the second is to learn

exactly what the I.R.S. expects fromthe small business owner at taxtime.

Recordkeeping for a one or two-person business is done primarilyto satisfy the I.R.S., so why not keepaudit-winning records. Follow theseten simple rules during the tax year, and you'll not only be ready for atax audit, but you'll simplify yourrecordkeeping duties as well.

Rule # 1 - Document Income.Absolutely all business income, including all cash & tips, must bedeposited into a separate checkingaccount used only for businessfunds. Do this and all you'll need attax time are 12 bank statements tototal your income.

Rule #2 - Keep a Paper Trail. Everypenny spent or charged for yourbusiness needs a paper trail. If areceipt is not provided you canmake your own; be sure to includeall of the necessary details.Working from expense receipts sim-plifies the recordkeeping processfor a small business owner.Rule #3 - Record Barter Exchanges.Every business barter exchangerequires a paper trail assigningvalue to your time, or the productthat you traded. The value of a

barter exchange is the same amountyou would charge if it had been acash sale.

Rule #4 - Track Every Expense.Sorting expense receipts is easy, when you use the business expensealphabet. From advertising to Ziplocbags, if you use it in your businessthere's a place on your tax return todeduct that expense.

Rule #5 - Depreciate Equipment. Anyequipment purchased that has anexpected life of 2+ years must bedepreciated or expensed at taxtime. It is important to keep a list ofall business equipment purchased, the date you bought it and the pricepaid, with your tax records.

Rule #6 - Log Your Miles. Unlessyour car is used only for business, keep a small notebook in your carfor tracking business miles. If youdon't keep a mileage log, and areasked to furnish one for a tax audit, you will fail the audit.

Rule #7 - Track Inventory. The I.R.S.considers all items that you make orbuy for resale to be inventory;inventory costs cannot be deducteduntil that inventory is sold.Inventory expensing is easy onceyou learn how to calculate the cost

per item value.

Rule #8 - Get Educated. No matterhow good your tax professional is,if you don't provide all of the nec-essary information and figures yourtax return will be wrong.

Rule #9 - Plan Ahead. Tax lawschange every year. During yourannual tax visit ask if there are anynew changes that affect you, whattax laws are in the works, howthose will affect your business, andwhat you can do now to lowerfuture taxes.

Rule #10 - Keep Everything. Withoutreceipts you will fail a tax audit.Box or bag all of your tax receiptseach year, and keep them for a min-imum of six years. If you get anaudit letter from the I.R.S., simplytake the box or bag containingreceipts for the year being auditedwith you when you meet with yourtax professional.

I can't tell you not to worry about atax audit, we all do. But, if you'vefollowed these ten rules, thereceipts and the audit should be inthe bag!

Confrontations between pro-

testers and police depart-

ments broke out nationwide

after the police officers who

caused the deaths of unarmed

black men were not indicted

by grand juries. Michael

Brown in Ferguson, Missouri…

shot in the street by officer

Darren Wilson. Eric Garner in

Staten Island, New York… who

died in an ambulance after a

chokehold by officer Daniel

Pantaleo. The outrage and

confusion was nationwide

and, as a result, protests (and

full-fledged riots) were as

well…

…But at a time when a lot of

police departments ratcheted

up the “us versus

” rhetoric and took a heavy-

handed approach to dealing

with protesters, Nashville’s

police force distributed coffee

and hot chocolate to demon-

strators and kept arrests to a

minimum. This mellow

approach to community polic-

ing didn’t sit well with one

Nashvillian, who wrote a letter

of complaint to police chief

Steve Anderson…

…”I have a son who I have

raised to respect police offi-

cers and other authority fig-

ures,” the letter writer

explained, “but if he comes to

me today and asks “Why are

the police allowing this?” I

wouldn’t have a good answer.”

(Chief Anderson made his

response public, but did not

identify the author of the com-

plaint.) “It is somewhat per-

plexing when children are

injected into the conversation

as an attempt to bolster a

position or as an attempt to

thwart the position of anoth-

er,” wrote Anderson. “While

this is not the type of conver-

sation I ordinarily engage in,

here are some thoughts you

may find useful as you talk

with your son.”…

…”First, it is laudable that you

are teaching your son respect

for the police and other

authority figures. However, a

better lesson might be that it

is the government the police

serve that should be respect-

ed. The police are merely a

representative of a govern-

ment formed by the people for

the people—for all people.

Being respectful of the govern-

ment would mean being

respectful of all persons, no

matter what their views.”…

…Chief Anderson actually

“gets” the intended role of

police in our country. The

increased militarization of

police departments since 9/11

has inspired many law

enforcement officers to imag-

ine themselves as front line

troops in an ongoing war

against a mostly imaginary

threat of domestic terror

attacks. These heavily-armed

“warriors” are increasingly

deployed in no-knock raids

against petty criminals with no

history of violence… often as

a result of an anonymous tip.

The results are often cata-

strophic…

…At a time when tensions

were running high among pro-

testers and Nashville’s police

officers, Chief Anderson chose

to look at demonstrators in his

jurisdiction as citizens who

had a right to peacefully

express their opinions. Instead

of deploying tear gas, his offi-

cers deployed cups of coffee

and hot chocolate. Police offi-

cers tend to talk a lot about

“respect.” I think it’s safe to

say that most of Nashville’s

protesters came away from

their police interactions with a

healthy amount of respect for

the officers they met…

ROCKCREEK, Ore. (UPI) - An Oregonman said he is searching for hisgirlfriend’s cat after he mistakenlysold a box spring that the felinewas using as a hiding place. RoyDufek of Rockcreek said in aReddit post he was selling two bedsets for his girlfriend while shewas at work last week and he didnot realize until later that his girl-friend’s cat, Camo, had apparentlybeen hiding inside a box spring hestrapped to the top of a buyer’scar. Dufek, who was in the process

of moving when he sold the items, said the man who purchased thebed set allowed him to search hishouse, but there was no sign ofCamo. The man said he had heardunusual noises while affixing thebox spring to the top of his car.Dufek said his posts on Reddit andCraigslist have resulted in an out-pouring of support and offers ofassistance, but so far there havebeen no confirmed Camo sightings.“People have told us stories oftheir cat that was gone a fewmonths, or a month, and found theway home. So that gives us hope,”

Dufek told The Oregonian. “Theonly issue is we don’t live at thatapartment anymore.”

PROVO, Utah (UPI) - A Utah manwho chugged a quart of eggnog in12 seconds to win a restaurant giftcard said he was also awardedwith a three-day stay in the hospi-tal. Ryan Roche, whose victory wascaptured in a video posted toYouTube, said he was challengedto the eggnog-chugging contest athis work Christmas party last weekand he had to beat a 22-secondrecord to win a gift card to Ruth’s

Chris Steak House. “I just openedup my throat, didn’t even swal-low,” he told KSL-TV. “I prettymuch poured it down.” Roche fin-ished off the quart in 12 seconds. “Igot done, and I was gasping, Icouldn’t breathe,” he said. Rochesaid his breathing troubles intensi-fied in the ensuing hours and hestarted feeling shaky and nau-seous. He said a friend who is inmedical school recommended hego to the hospital, where doctorssaid he was “dry drowning” from

Rochesaid he spent his first 24 hours inthe hospital in intensive care. “Itwas rough,” he said. He said hetook home the steakhouse giftcard, but it also came with a valu-able lesson. “Eggnog: not ideal forthe lungs,” Roche said. “Not onlydo I get a Ruth’s Chris gift card, butI got a three night’s stay in the hos-pital.”

DETROIT, MI - Being on the“naughty list” just got a littletougher, at least in Detroit where aman dressed as jolly old Saint Nickunloaded on two hapless souls at agas station. Because apparentlyreindeer run on unleaded andeven Santa can’t go to Detroitwithout packing heavy. Detroitpolice officials confirmed that thetwo victims were recovering fromgunshot wounds following the inci-dent. The festively dressed gun-man, who is now in custody, toldofficers that he felt threatenedafter arguing with the pair andshot both men. “An individual whowas dressed as Santa and twoother individuals got into somekind of confrontation,” saidOfficer Adam Madera. “Two of theindividuals went to their vehicle;they believe that Santa felt maybethat they were going to get aweapon. He then shot these indi-viduals.” Madera said that two off-

duty officers in the area engagedin a short foot chase with the sus-pect and directed him to an on-duty officer who made the arrest. The suspect’s name was not imme-diately released, but if you didn’tget any presents on Christmasmorning it probably means thename was Kringle.

CLEARWATER, Fla. (UPI) - A westFlorida woman faces felony assaultcharges after she reportedlyattacked her grandmother fordenying a Facebook friendrequest. Deputies arrested RachelAnne Hayes, 27, early Thursday foraggravated battery on an elderlyperson. According to authorities,Hayes slapped the 72-year-old mul-tiple times at a home inClearwater, Fla. WFLA reports thewoman was Hayes’ grandmotherand that Hayes’ arrest affidavitindicated alcohol was a factor inthe assault. The attack allegedlystemmed from an argumentbetween the two over Hayes’Facebook moniker. Hayes’ grand-mother refused to accept herfriend request unless the namewas changed, according to author-ities. Hayes initially left the resi-dence but returned, and in theensuing argument she slapped hergrandmother multiple times at thethreshold of a door before the eld-erly woman was able to retreatinside. Deputies arrived on sceneand arrested Hayes, who wasreleased from the Pinellas Countyjail on $10,000 bond. Hayes’ jailrecords show prior arrests for

alcohol related incidents, includ-ing a DUI last year, violation ofprobation in relation to the DUIand a September charge of disor-derly conduct for urinating in pub-lic.

SHERIDAN, Wyo. (UPI) - Authoritiesin Wyoming said a man was shot inthe arm when his dog stepped on aloaded gun in the back seat of hispickup truck. Johnson CountySheriff Steve Kozisek said RichardFipps, 46, of Sheridan, was stand-ing next to his pickup truckMonday when his dog climbedfrom the front seat to the backseat and stepped on the loaded.300 Winchester Magnum, whichdid not have its safety activated. The gun fired off a round thatstruck Fipps in the left arm,Kozisek said. Kozisek said evi-dence from the scene and state-ments from two employees whowere working with Fipps at thetime of the incident support Fipps’version of events. Authorities saidFipps’ injury is not considered life-threatening, but there is a chancehe could lose his arm.

Like the comedian Jim Gaffiganpointed out, a lot of our holidaytraditions seem like the actions ofa drunk. Who chops down a treeand drags it inside their house(without drinking a 12 pack of beerand a half pint of whiskey first)? But our holiday oddities seemquaint and homey compared tosome of the bizarre things they doto celebrate Christmas around the

world. In Catalonia, families gath-er around the “caga tio,” a logthat’s decorated with a cartoonface and plied with treats in theweeks before Christmas. OnChristmas day, the children sing asong and beat the log with sticksuntil it ‘poops’ out presents (cagais the Catalonian equivalent of‘caca,’ and means ‘pooping’). InAustria, the Christmas season kicksoff on Dec. 5 with KrampusnachtKrampus, St. Nick’s demonic polaropposite, is a goat-horned devilthat shakes fistfuls of rusty chainsat passing children. According tolegend, naughty kids are snatchedby Krampus and dragged to hismountain lair. In more recentyears, the custom has morphedinto a sort of Halloween inDecember, giving people a chanceto dress up and parade around intheir ghoulish costumes. In theNetherlands, the Dutch add a littlefear to their holiday celebrationswith Zwarte Piet. In a rather racistcustom that has persisted to thisday, Zwarte Piet, or Black Peter, isSanta’s slave who abducts Dutchchildren that misbehave, takingthem back to Spain, where it issaid that Santa and Peter spendtheir off-season. In a scene manyAmericans would find shocking, the Dutch dress up as Black Peter, donning black face and Afro wigs,in order to accompany Santa. Sodon’t be too critical if Dad dressedup at Santa this year and smelled alittle like scotch and cigarettes. Itcould be a lot worse.

The Woman in Black 2: Angel of

Death PG-13

Hammer Films goes in for a sec-

ond round of fright with this fol-

low-up to The Woman in Black

from a story idea by original

author Susan Hill. Tom Harper

directs.

NNOOWW SSHHOOWWIINNGG

Annie PG

Annie is a young, happy foster kid

who’s also tough enough to make

her way on the streets of New

York in 2014. Originally left by her

parents as a baby with the prom-

ise that they’d be back for her

someday, it’s been a hard knock

life ever since with her mean fos-

ter mom Miss Hannigan. But

everything’s about to change

when the hard-nosed tycoon and

New York mayoral candidate Will

Stacks – advised by his brilliant

VP, Grace and his shrewd and

scheming campaign advisor, Guy

– makes a thinly-veiled campaign

move and takes her in. Stacks

believes he’s her guardian angel,

but Annie’s self-assured nature

and bright, sun-will-come-out-

tomorrow outlook on life just

might mean it’s the other way

around.

Big Eyes PG-13

Walter Keane became a house-

hold name in the 1950s, when his

oddly emotional and best-selling

paintings of big-eyed children

made him a coveted TV talk show

guest. But was the art really his?

His wife Margaret claims that

Walter’s only contributions to the

work were his signatures, and

Keanes subsequent legal battle

will destroy their marriage and

lead to a jaw-dropping court

showdown that will prove once

and for all who the real artist is.

Big Hero 6

Robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada

learns to harness his genius—

thanks to his brilliant brother

Tadashi and their like-minded

friends: adrenaline junkie Go Go

Tamago, neatnik Wasabi, chem-

istry whiz Honey Lemon and fan-

boy Fred. When a devastating

turn of events catapults them into

the midst of a dangerous plot

unfolding in the streets of San

Fransokyo, Hiro turns to his clos-

est companion—a robot named

Baymax—and transforms the

group into a band of high-tech

heroes determined to solve the

mystery.

Exodus: God and Kings PG-13

Ridley Scott’s Biblical epic

Exodus: Gods and Kings stars

Christian Bale as Moses who, as

the film opens, fights alongside

his brother Ramses (a shaved-

headed Joel Edgerton), to help

defend Egypt, which is ruled by

their father, Seti (John Turturro).

During battle, Moses saves

Ramses life, causing Ramses to

fear that his brother will one day

be King because it fits with a

prophecy handed down by one of

Seti’s trusted spiritualists. Soon

after Seti’s death, Moses, who is

actually Jewish and not Egyptian,

is banished. However, he

becomes the leader of the Jewish

people and leads a rebellion, with

the help of a wrathful God,

against that Egyptians.

Horrible Bosses 2 R

After barely escaping with their

lives when their plans to murder

their bosses goes out of control,

Nick, Dale and Kurt decide that

they’ll be better off launching a

business of their own. But a slick

investor has other plans, and

when he manages to snake their

successful venture right out from

underneath them, the three

friends launch a not-very-well-

thought-out plan to kidnap the

investor’s adult son and trade him

for control of their company.

Interstellar PG-13

A group of explorers make use of

a newly discovered wormhole to

surpass the limitations on human

space travel and conquer the vast

distances involved in an interstel-

lar voyage.

Into the Woods PG

A witch tasks a childless baker

and his wife with procuring magi-

cal items from classic fairy tales

to reverse the curse put on their

family tree.

Night at the Museum: Secret of

the Tomb PG-13

Get ready for the wildest and

most adventure-filled Night At the

Museum ever as Larry (Ben Stiller)

spans the globe, uniting favorite

and new characters while

embarking on an epic quest to

save the magic before it is gone

forever.

Penguins of Madagascar PG

born…they’re hatched. Discover

the secrets of the greatest and

most hilarious covert birds in the

global espionage biz: Skipper,

Kowalski, Rico and Private. These

elitists of the elite are joining

forces with a chic undercover

organization, The North Wind.

Led by handsome and husky

Agent Classified (we could tell you

his name, but then…you know),

voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch.

Together, they must stop the vil-

lainous Dr. Octavius Brine, voiced

by John Malkovich, from destroy-

ing the world as we know it.

The Gambler R

Lit professor and gambler Jim

Bennett’s debt causes him to bor-

row money from his mother and a

loan shark. Further complicating

his situation is his relationship

with one of his students. Will

Bennett risk his life for a second

chance?

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five

Armies PG-13

Peter Jackson takes cues from the

appendices of The Lord of the

Rings to expand New Line

Cinema’s Hobbit adaptation with

this third film completing the epic

tale of Bilbo Baggins, as played by

Martin Freeman.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay

Part 1 PG-13

Katniss Everdeen leads the dis-

tricts of Panem in a rebellion

against the tyrannical and corrupt

Capitol. As the war that will

determine the fate of Panem

escalates, Katniss must decipher

for herself who she can trust and

what needs to be done, with

everything she cares for in the

balance.

The Interview

Dave Skylark and his producer

Aaron Rapoport run the popular

celebrity tabloid TV show

“Skylark Tonight.” When they dis-

cover that North Korean dictator

Kim Jong-un is a fan of the show,

they land an interview with him

in an attempt to legitimize them-

selves as journalists. As Dave and

Aaron prepare to travel to

Pyongyang, their plans change

haps the two least-qualified men

imaginable, to assassinate Kim

Jong-un.

Unbroken PG-13

After a near-fatal plane crash in

to Iraq with only one mission: to

protect his brothers-in-arms. His

pinpoint accuracy saves countless

lives on the battlefield and, as

stories of his courageous exploits

spread, he earns the nickname

“Legend.” However, his reputa-

tion is also growing behind

enemy lines, putting a price on

his head and making him a prime

target of insurgents. He is also

facing a different kind of battle

on the home front: striving to be

a good husband and father from

halfway around the world. Based

on the book by Chris Kyle with

Scott McEwen and Jim DeFelice.

ENIGMA JANUARY 1 2015 22

With the Dallas Cowboys leading

their hated NFC East rivals

Washington Redskins, 20-7, on a

Dan Bailey field goal in the second

quarter, Cowboy head coach Jason

Garrett called a play that summed

up his attitude about a supposedly

“meaningless game. His team had

come to the nation’s capital to play

football.

Garrett called for an onside kick

that was a perfectly executed

catching Washington completely

by surprise. Dallas safety Barry

Church easily recovered the ball.

With a pro-Cowboy crowd chanti-

ng “Let’s go Cowboys!” the team

did just that. Six plays after the

recovery, running back DeMarco

Murray capped off 49-yard drive

with a slicing 9-yard run through a

bewildered Redskins defense. This

division rival had cost Garrett’s

team home field advantage and a

first round bye earlier in the sea-

son with an improbable 20-17 over-

time win in Jerry World. They were

not going to slow down the

momentum that was driving this

team into the playoffs.

The “21st Century Triplets” – Dez

Bryant, Tony Romo and Murray –

made their predecessors proud in

this game. Bryant’s two brilliant

touchdown receptions in the first

quarter set the tone for the game.

After the Redskins had jumped to a

surprising 7-3 lead on the strength

of DeSean Jackson’s 69-yard catch

and run for a score, Bryant took it

upon himself to return the favor.

On the ensuing drive, the wide

receiver took a quick out pass

from Romo, stiff-armed the

defender and raced 65 yards to the

end zone for the lead. It was a jaw-

dropping play that demonstrated

just how physical, and fast, the

dangerous receiver has become.

After a quick three and out, it was

time for the DeMarco Murray

show. It started with a ten-yard

pass reception from Tony Romo.

Two rush plays by the back netted

nine yards. On third and one, with

Washington stacking the line,

Romo again handed off to NFL’s

leading rusher who found a gap

behind two of his All-Pro linemen,

center Travis Frederickson and

guard Zack Martin, for 32 yards. In

the process, he broke Emmitt

Smith’s 19-year old record for most

rushing yards in a season. Dez

Bryant would cap this record shat-

tering drive when he made a spec-

tacular 23-yard touchdown grab on

the next play. It was Bryant’s 16th

TD reception of the year breaking

the franchise mark of 15 set by

Terrell Owens in 2007. It also

solidified the player’s hold as the

NFL’s leading touchdown receiver.

The Cowboys scored on their first

Cowboys Shit IntoPlayoff Mode

Page 23: Enigma 1/01/15

five drives to build a 27-10 lead. It

would have been six straight drives

if running back Lance Dunbar’s

nifty 76-yard touchdown run had

not been called back on a holding

penalty by tight end Jason Witten.

In the second half, it was time for

the Dallas defense to take its turn

in the spotlight. After a two-yard

run by Robert Griffin III made the

score 27-17, linebacker Bruce

Carter made his presence known

as he intercepted the ball twice

deep inside Cowboy territory to

nullifying key scoring drives.

DeMarco Murray was finally pulled

from the contest deep in

Washington territory after his

four-yard run gave the back 100

yards for the day. It was the 12th

time the All-Pro had reached the

century mark breaking Emmitt

Smith’s mark also set back in 1995.

The Cowboys settled for a field

goal. It was time to rest the

starters.

Dallas defensive tackle Terrell

McClain stripped Griffin of the ball

on the Washington 5-yard line on

their next possession. The pigskin

landed perfectly in teammate

Anthony Spencer’s hands for his

first ever NFL touchdown. With

just over two minutes left in the

contest, RGIII tried to lead his

team on a face-saving scoring

drive and looked like he might suc-

ceed. Unfortunately, receiver

Jordan Reed fumbled the ball after

getting a first down. Dallas safety

J.J. Wilcox recovered. On the next

play, Cowboy QB Josh Weeden

handed the ball off to Joseph

Randall who broke through a blitz-

ing Redskin secondary for a 65

yard touchdown run and the final

score, 44-17.

On this record franchise setting

day, there was little to celebrate

inside the Cowboy locker room

other than a job well-done. The

team, said Jason Garrett, had set

its sights on a higher goal.

CCoowwbbooyy NNootteess –– Many sports pun-

dits were saying Dallas had noth-

ing to play for against the

Redskins. Jason Garrett knew dif-

ferently. Back in 2007, his first sea-

son as offensive coordinator, the

Cowboys went into their last game

of the year against Washington

sporting a 13-2 record, home field

advantage throughout the playoffs

and a first round bye. The team

had nothing to play for and many

players sat out the game.

Washington’s second-string quar-

terback Todd Collins led the

Redskins to a 27-6 victory. Dallas

rushed for a franchise low 1 yard in

the game. Two weeks later – after

Romo and Witten had jetted off to

Cabo San Lucas during the bye

week – the Cowboys were defeat-

ed by eventual Super Bowl champi-

ons the New York Giants. This loss

extended the Cowboys drought of

playoff wins to eleven years and

tied the NFL record of 6 straight

playoff games lost. This all hap-

pened despite the fact Dallas had

13 players named to the Pro Bowl,

an NFL record.

The Cowboys have become the

sixth team to go undefeated on the

road since the NFL went to a 16-

game schedule. The previous five

teams all went to their respective

conference championship games.

Four of those teams played in the

Super Bowl. Don’t think for one

minute that Jason Garrett wasn’t

aware of that stat going into the

Washington game.

For the first time in 21 years, the

Dallas Cowboys finished up their

most troublesome month,

December, with a 4-0 record. The

offense average 41 points per con-

test and outscored opponents 165-

79. The offense finished the regu-

lar season scoring 467 points, the

second highest in franchise histo-

ry. Tony Romo has thrown only

nine interceptions this year to go

with his 34 touchdown tosses.

Colts Look to PlayoffsTitans Look to 2015

2014 mercifully came to an end

Sunday for the Tennessee Titans.

Sunday the Titans lost their tenth

in a row and 14 out of 15. Good

riddance might be more apt. The

Titans put up a descent fight

against the division winning

Indianapolis Colts but even they

took it easy on them y benching

their marquee players at the half.

The Colts walked away with a 27-

10 win ending the regular season.

Look for an all new Titans team

next season as coach Ken

Wisenhunt pretty much alluded

to in his post game conference.

Over the coming months there

will be a lot of unemployed and

Theoretically the offense got

slightly better as the quarter-

back(s) was only sacked 37 tines

this season compared to 50 in

2013. The problem is the QB is

getting too many clean shots

taken at him. Jake Locker, who

was playing on borrowed time

finished the season on IR. Zach

Mettenberger, supposedly the

“future” of the franchise also fin-

ished the season on the IR after

less than a half dozen games.

Charlie Whitehurst missed a num-

ber of games due to game day

injuries. The line still needs a lot

of work.

The running game dropped ten

overall dropping from 14th the

season before. Many of the stats

are similar between 2013 and 14

with the exception of turnovers.

They went from forcing 24 fum-

bles last season to only seven this

year. “The way we have it set up

right now, there’s plenty of time

to assess that. There’s nothing

really you can do until March, so

we’ll get a chance to go back and

look at it. That’s what you have to

do, you can’t make an emotional

decision now, you have to go

back through it and look at all of

the things you have to do better

and why they didn’t work and

where you can get better,” said

Whisenhunt.

traded players as the Titans had

their worst season since the early

‘80s when they won a combined

six games over a three year

stretch. The coach is safe. This is

his first year at the helm and he

has had success everywhere he’s

been as an offensive coordinator

and briefly as head coach of the

Cardinals where he took them to

their first Super Bowl six years

ago.

A lot of changes need to come

first to the defense. The Titans

went from averaging just under

24 points allowed per game to 28

points a game this season. The

2014 Titans defense ranked 27th

Page 25: Enigma 1/01/15

ENIGMA JANUARY 1 2015 25

there are a lot of areas that we

got to improve in and we are

going to work to do that. One

thing that has been consistent

with our guys is their effort and

you know that’s a big thing,” said

Whisenhunt.

“We needed to come out and win.

Chuck (Pagano) talked about it

and I think we all knew it. To get

a victory was huge. It really was,”

said Luck.

“You know, it’s been a tough

year. Last few practices we had

during the week, we knew they

were the last few this year. As

hard as it’s been and I know it’s

only my first year here but you

make some bonds in the locker

room for sure. It’s tough it’s over.

You almost want to keep going

but it has been tough, no doubt

about it,” said Whisenhunt.

- Dave Weinthal

Luck literally got half of his pass-

ing yards on one play hitting

Reggie Wayne on a 80-yard pitch

and catch. “It was a great catch,

it was awesome. He contorted his

body between two guys and then

to keep his feet in bounds and

keep on running, he is remark-

able. For him to perform like

that, it’s special,” he said.

Despite the loss Tennessee stayed

close most of the game remaining

within one score most of the

game before giving up ten unan-

swered points in the fourth with

former Titan Matt Hasselback

throwing one final touchdown

pass with 3:18 to play.

“Well, OK, not the finish that we

wanted from the standpoint of

score, but I am happy with the

way our guys fought and battled

today. Even when things weren’t

going great for us they hung in

there and they battled and they

fought, scrapped and obviously

you don’t do that,” said

Whisenhunt.

Well, the game against the Colts

pretty much mirrored the season.

Andrew Luck in his only half of

work threw for 160 yards and two

touchdowns passed Peyton

Manning’s rookie record for pass-

ing yards and became only the

fourth quarterback to throw for

over 4,000 yards and 40 touch-

downs in defeating the Titans.

The Colts bounced back soundly

after being embarrassed by the

Cowboys the week before when

they didn’t get into the end zone.

Getting back on the right tack

was important for Luck and the

Colts as they prepare for the off-

season. “Win most importantly.

That was our goal. It was a good

win and I thought we did some

good stuff offensively. Obviously,

it wasn’t perfect. It’s always

tough to get a win on the road

but we did some decent things,”

he said.

places overall this season com-

pared to 2013. It’s been a few

years since the running game was

feared in the NFL. An aging Chris

Johnson was shipped out and a

youth movement took over.

Bishop Sankey, the rookie out of

Washington led the team in rush-

ing with 569 yards but averaged

only 3.7 yards a rush. Once again

a lot of the trouble with the

offense could relate to a weak

offensive line that opened very

little holes for the running game

and was full of holes when pro-

tecting the QB.

“When you get to the end of a

season as tough as this one, you

need to take a little time and go

back through it. You know, it was

tough. It was tough for our fans. I

think one of the things you have

to understand is that we are

working pretty hard. We are

working hard every week, trying

to get a win. It hurts. That’s the

worst part of this. It hurts when

It was obvious at the Georgia Domethat I wasn’t the only one thatheard this bit of news. TheCarolina Panthers had a whole lotof fans in attendance and theywere cocky. For the second gamein a row it seemed that the visitorshad outnumbered the home teamfans and were as loud at times ifnot louder. Even Cam Newtonlooked cockier than ever – if thatwas at all possible. The Panthers scored 24 unan-swered points the rest of the way.Matt Ryan threw two pick 6’s witha third one called back because ofa penalty and the usually surehanded Roddy White fumbled awaythe ball after a long reception thatset up another Panther.

The feeling I got while being on thefield was that the Falcons alreadyknew the fate of their coach andnothing they were going to do wasgoing to change that. It was partanger, dismay and disbelief theway they played. It was as if theywere protesting the newsannounced yet in the processthrew their coach under the bus.Of course this wasn’t the first blun-der in Arthur Blank’s 12 years onowning the team.

Granted, Blank is one of the bestowners in not only the NFL, butprofessional sports in general. Forthe most part he has kept his noseout of the team’s operations andhas spent money where and whenit needs to be spent. I think hepulled the plug prematurely on DanReeves and Jim Mora pandering tothe players and fans.

In my humble opinion Blank is oneof those guys that wants to be likedand popular. Most people do, Iguess, but he makes these big deci-sion with no logic or reason. Thereare tons of opinions on everythingespecially sports but he firedReeves during a losing season thatwasn’t the coach’s fault. QB Mike

Vick missed most of the seasonbecause of a preseason injury andthe team went from a playoff teamto a double-digit losing team. Itwasn’t the coach’s fault. To magni-fy the issue Blank famouslywheeled Vick around in a wheel-chair on the sideline of a gamesomething he would regret a cou-ple of years later when is star QBwas sent to Leavenworth.

Then there was the Jim Mora era.Mora was a surprise pick, but witha new GM (Rich McKay) with asound track record and no past his-tory as an NFL coach maybe thismight work. Sure enough theFalcons won the NFC South for thefirst time and hosted their firstplayoff game since the Super Bowlrun of 1998. They won in a big wayand lost in the NFC championshipgame to the Eagles.

The following year they fell to 8-8after a 6-2 start and to 7-0 afteranother 6-2 start. Word got outthat Mora while being interviewedon radio said his “dream job” wasto coach Washington (college).Supposedly Blank didn’t find thishumorous and despite all of Mora’s

damage control was let go follow-ing the season.

It is time to note the activities ofthe team under Mora’s reign here. The inmates ran the asylum andBlank didn’t seem to matter as longas the stands were full and theywere winning games. The team hadtaken on a “thug-like” mentalityand there was a lot of dissention inthe ranks between players unseento those in the stands. Everythingwas about Michael Vick. Evenwhen interviewing other playersthey were often asked about thequarterback. I remember sitting ina press conference with WarrickDunn and he told the press therewas more to the team than the playof their quarterback.

No matter what the coaches didthey couldn’t succeed with Vickwho was a world-class athlete butnot much of a quarterback. And Iargued this point with my fellowphotographers and Falcons press inthe lunchroom on game day untilthe end finally came in early 2007when Vick ended up serving twoyears in Levenworth for hisinvolvement with a dog fighting

ring.

The team made what they thoughtwas a big splash in the coachingmarket by hiring Bobby Petrinoaway from Louisville where he hadjust signed a contract extension.Weeks after the hiring of Petrinothat’s when the news broke aboutVick. Petrino was left with threequarterbacks of limited potentialand no dynamic skills. One, ByronLeftwich was past his prime. Theteam was in chaos.

The preseason went well and fullof optimism as the Falcons finished3-1. But that was the highlight ofthe season. They started 0-3 scor-ing only 10 points combined in thefirst two games. During theirwhitewash loss to the Saints onMonday Night Football ironicallyPetrino’s last game as the coach,Roddy White lifted up his jerseyafter scoring one of only twotouchdowns they scored that nightdisplaying a t-shirt that read “FreeMichael Vick”. CornerbackDeAngelo Hall sported face paintwith the same message. Both werepromptly fined $10,000 by theleague. Petrino left after the game

leaving a farewell note in theteam’s lockers.

Back to ground zero. Who wouldthey hire? First they moved McKayinto the front office bringing inNew England Patriot wunderkindscout Thomas Dimitroff in as thenew GM. Hoping they would makethe splash with a marquee name ascoach they hired Mike Smith, defensive coordinator of theJacksonville Jaguars a perennialtop five defense. Who? I wasn’tsold, but going into the draft theyhad the number three oveall pickand if looked like they were gettingrid of the thug mentality asDeAngelo Hall and Jimmy Williamswere sent packing – just two exam-ples of problem children on theFalcons.

The Falcons took Matt Ryan withthe third overall pick of the 2008draft and offensive lineman SamBaker with the 21st overall pick thatwas received in the trade of Hall toOakland. After losing their firsttwo preseason games the Falconswon their last two. Ryan was okayin preseason but was he ready tobe thrown to the wolves yet?

Where the Falcons going to startChris Redman who had a string2007 season in mop up relief ofJoey Harrington and Leftwich? Theteam averaged barely 13 points agame in the preseason. It wasannounced that Ryan was going tobe the game one starter.

Not knowing what to expect onAtlanta’s first possession of thegame at the Georgia Dome Ryandropped back to pass on the firstplay of scrimmage. He hit MichaelJenkins over the middle for a 62yard score. The Dome erupted. Thus began the Ryan-Smith era. After being the embarrassment ofthe league the previous season allof a sudden the Falcons startedsurprising folks. Surprising every-one with an 11-5 record and makingtheir first preseason appearancesince 2004. The Falcons held a 17-14 lead over the Arizona Cardinalsbut could not hold the lead losingto the eventual Super Bowl repre-sentative 30-24.

The following year the Falcons didsomething they had never donebefore. They finished the seasonwith another winning record – 9-7.

In over 40 years in existence thiswas the only time they had back-to-back winning seasons.

Under Mike Smith they had fiveback-to-back winning seasons andfour playoff appearances includingfalling just ten yards short of theSuper Bowl in 2012.

Granted, the last two seasons havebeen a disaster but injuries are theblame for that and too much of a“win it now or never” attitude. Itwas almost as if Dimitroff felt pres-sure to win it all the next year orelse. That resulted in some badpersonnel decisions like signing apast his prime Steven Jackson, let-ting John Abraham to go and notsigning another effective pass rush-er. The Falcons fell to 4-12 withseven of those losses being onescore losses. A couple of othergames they were close or aheadgoing into the fourth quarter butdepth kept them from pulling outthe wins like in the previous fiveseasons.

This past season saw a lot of thesame problems with no defensivepressure on opposing quarterbacksand almost as many “name” playerson IR as the active roster. At 6-8going into Sunday’s game they stillwere only a victory from winningtheir third division title in sevenyears and fifth playoff appearance.

The Smith critics started raisingtheir voices loud last season callingfor his head as early as October 7after losing to the Jets on MondayNight Football 30-28 a they wentinto their bye week. 2013 was thefirst year Smitty had lost consecu-tive games as a head coach.

To me it seems as if Blank listenstoo much to sports talk radio as hegave in to the pressure of “popu-lar” opinion. Like a eulogy I willremember Smitty as the bestFalcons coach ever. Winningbecame expected under Smitty -not a novelty like in the past. Infact, I want to see where he goesnext. I think the Bears should takea look at him. He’s obviously goodat dealing with difficult situations.

The Falcons go into the off-seasonlooking for a new coach and hope-fully this firm “hired” to help withthe search picks a winner. Theysure gave up on one when they letSmitty go. He deserves a lot better.
