STANDARD PROCEDURE FOR II SPANIEL FIELD TRIALS

1. The idea of a Spaniel Field Trial is to demon-

tstrate the performance of a perfectly trainedSpaniel in the Field. The performance of aSpaniel in Field Trials should not differ fromI that in any ordinary day's. shooting, except that

I in the Trials a dog should do his' work" in amore nearly perfect way. ',' +-:» .j-

2. The f~nction o{~ hunting Spaniel is to walkat heel (or on a leash) until bidden to seek game. When so ordered, he should seek game in abrisk, quiet manner thoroughly quartering thedesignated cover within gunshot in the line ofquest without unnecessarily covering the groundtwice. When game is flushed, dogs should dropor "hup" to flush or command and, if game isshot, should retrieve at command only, but notuntil the Judge has instructed the handler. Dogsshould retrieve quickly and briskly when orderedto do so and deliver tenderly to hand. Theyshould then drop or "hup" until given furtherorders. Spaniels which bark and give tonguewhile questing are objectionable and should beseverely penalized.

3. If a dog, following the line of a bird or rabbit,is getting too far out he -should be called offthe line and later he should-again be cast backon it. A dog which causes his handler and gunto run after him, while line running, is out ofcontrol. Handlers may control their dogs byhand, voice, or whistle, but only in the quietmanner that would be used in the field. Anyloud shouting or whistling is evidence that thedog is hard to handle and, in addition, is dis-turbing to the game.

4. A dog should work to his handler and gun atall times. A dog which marks the fall of abird, uses the wind, follows a strong runnerwhich has been wounded, and will take direc-tion from his handler is of great value.

5. When the Judge gives a line to a handler anddog to follow, this must be followed and thedog not allowed to interfere with the othercontestant running parallel to him.

6. The Judges must judge their dogs for gamefinding ability, steadiness, and retrieving. Ingame finding the dog should cover all hisground on the beat, leaving no game in histerritory and showing courage in facing cover.Dogs must drop to wing and shot and obey all

commands. When ordered to retrieve theyshould do this tenderly and with speed. NoTrials for Spaniels can possibly be run withoutretrieving, as that is one of the main purposesfor which a Spaniel is used.

7. In judging a Spaniel's work Judges should giveattention to the following points, taking themas a whole throughout the entire performancerather than giving too much credit to a flashybit of work.Control at all time, and under all conditions.Scenting ability and use of wind.Manner of covering ground and briskness ofquesting.

Perseverance, and courage in facing cover.Steadiness to flush, shot and command.Aptitude in marking fall of game, and abilityto find it.

Ability and willingness to take hand signals.Promptness and style of retrieve and delivery.Proof of tender mouth.

8. The Guns should shoot their game in a sports-manlike manner, as they would in a day'sshoot. The proper functioning of the OfficialGuns is of the utmost importance. The gunsare supposed to represent the handler up to thetime the game is shot, although not interferingin any manner with his work or that of thedown brace. They are supposed if possible, un-less otherwise directed, to kill cleanly and con-sistently, the game flushed by the Spaniels at apoint most advantageous to a fair trial of theirability, with due regard to the dogs, handlers, judges, gallery and other contingencies.

9. Care should be taken not to shoot so that thegame falls too close to the dog. If this is doneit does not afford a chance for the dog to showany good retrieving ability and often results ina bird being destroyed. The guns should standperfectly quiet after the shot, for otherwise theymay interfere with the dog and handler. Whena dog makes a retrieve no other birds or gameshould be shot unless ordered by the Judge forspecial reasons. The gun must also keep him-self in the correct position to the handler andothers.

10. It has been repeatedly proven that the mostefficient gun and load for this work, in all fair-ness to the dogs, handlers and those responsiblefor the trial, is a well choaked twelve gaugedouble gun, and a load of not less than threedrams of smokeless powder, and one and one-eighth ounces of number six chilled shot. It isearnestly requested that all guns will be guided Ithereby, for the good of the sport ..·.·(t_I_I_~~I_Cl_'_O_O_)_O_I'_II_n_II_0_()_()_(I_(I_()_O_o..-l.:.
