This portfolio gives a general overview of my work as a student at the Technical University of Delft. My motivation is based in the added so-

New Living Concepts

Re-interpretation of the allotmentgarden in the city, as part of a new living strategy. A to be redevelopped old industrial area and station, witch is transformed into a high density green living environment.

This project was part of an exposition in “The day of the Architecture” on 27 june 2010 in the “T.O.P.” at Delft. For more information on this project visit http://www.groengedacht.nl (Dutch).

designing through scales

“The Garden Strip” was part of the graduation project. In this building, the main focus was on architecture and durability. Besides ecological durability, social durability was realized by using allotment gardens which visitors could enjoy. Gardening as a shared activity, binds dwellers and visitors.

The building stacks dwellings, and allows gar-dening on the roofs . By connecting the garden on the roof with routes that connect to the pub-lic space, The Garden Strip allows visitors to en-ter the gardening community.

Waveconceptual challenge

In this bachelor 6 project, “Wave”, I designed a fl oating administrative building for the foun-dation “De Veerhaven” in Rotterdam. During the bachelor I had the chance to experiment with different design strategies. In the search for a method of my own, working with clear con-cepts helped me direct my design.

The building contains functions like a restaurant and small exposition space for visitors. Being part of an old harbor, wood and copper was used to blend in with the character of the sur-rounding.

important to me. These vary from quick studies to real show models.

The book is the main focus of design. By play-ing with transparency, the steel mesh and the minimal use of color emphasize the individual books. The design resulted in a detailed model that represented the endresult 1:20.

Bookrentalmethods of presentation

This design was part of the 2nd semester of the master. Sitting in the train, I took part in a survey. I was asked if I would be intrested in borrowing books at the station if they were available. I took thisidea to create a “portable” borrowing station for books.

Besides using programs like Adobe, Autodesk and Maya 3d, tactile presentations are still very

The fl oor and roof consist of 600mm x 600mm panels, enough for one person to stand on or under. The artifi cial light is integrated within these panels and is dynamically adjustable. In this design, the light creates an effect of depth, almost as if pages are randomly put on top of eachother. This breaks the geometry, allowing changing interpretations of the interior.

Urban Thermeliving and leisure

Part of the master 1 requirements, was designing with a fi xed vol-ume of 40m x 40m x 40m. We re-interpreted the bathouses from an-tiquity in a modern context. This building is situated in the Heijplaat, an old industrial harbor. The “Urban Therme” contains dwellings that revolve around a bathing route, and connect to public baths.

creating new public space

In this Master 2 project, an excisting old prison building is integrated within a new public program. A continuous passage leads trough new spaces containing exposition halls, auditoria and a tourist of-fi ce. The added volumes emphasize and border the square, by working with height differences these borders are broken.

research

Research played an integral part throughout the design progress of the graduation project. The goal was to search for the essence of the allotment garden. Visiting the gardens and the garden communities made it clear that the garden was disappearing from within the city to the edges.

The wealthy and sick 19th century citizen es-caped the industrial city, to recover from T.B.C. in a place with plentiful suply of clean air and sun. To address this need, the balcony was developed. Doctors, architects and investors worked intensely together to create sanatoria. The emergence of concrete coincided, and great new architecture was build.

History Thesiswriting

During my study I enjoyed writing several essays, with my history thesis being the most important. It was meant to deepen the understanding of the graduation project in a historical sense.

Following a short thread on the development of the balcony and fl at roofs, I encountered the Swiss village Davos. Historically its known as the “Capital of tuberculosis of Europe”.

The question is, do we wish for this to contin-ue? Is there no place for the allotment garden within the city? The research became the start-ing point of transforming the allotment garden concept to include it in high density city plan-ning.

About me:As an architect I get my energy from the added social value in my work, by improving our living environ-ment by design. In my graduation project I could implement these ideals, starting from a concept and fi nishing with an urban and architectural design. In my traineeship at Heren 5 Architecten, I further spe-cialize myself in housing and architecture.

Education:

2001-2009 Architecture - Technical University of DelftGraduated 6-11-2009, department “Dwelling”. The graduation project wascalled “Allotment gardning as a strategy for new living concepts”. (Graded 9/10)1994-2000 High School “Van der Capellen Scholengemeenschap Zwolle”

Experience:

■ 2010-present Trainee at “Heren5 architecten”After my graduation I started a traineeship, working in an offi ce with a consumer approach on architec-ture. Here I could help in desigining projects, ranging from housing to multifunctional care homes.■ 2009 – presentFreelancer, name “Groengedacht”As a freelancer various assignments, including

- Exposition at IFOU 2011 in Singapore. - Exposition T.O.P. Delft 2010.

Languages: Dutch-native, English-excellent, German-intermediate, French-beginnerSoftware: I am skilled in Vectorworks, Atlantis, AutoCad, MS Offi ce, Maya, AdobeWriting skills: Excelent.

As a student assistant I could help in organizing an interna-tional symposium promoting africa and its contempary archi-tecture:

- Acquisition of speakers, exposition “Bamboo”, partici-pants of a workshop and tutors.- General organization and communication.- Creating and managing workshop “Bamboo and Loam”.

Organizing a students workshop during the symposium “African Persopectives.

Organizing a workshop during the symposium African Perspectives, one of my responsibilities.

Letter of recommendation

“Dear madam/sir,

As Professor at the TUDelft, department Building Technology, I was responsible for my part within the symposium “Af-rican Perspectives”. We have been looking for a student assistant who could support the department, a go-getter. Niels Lyklema was introduced, and worked in full satisfaction for our department from 1 October 2007 till 1 February 2008.

Next to supporting activities, he took on an exposition Bamboo and a work-shop Bamboo and Loam. Niels dem-onstrated that he could work indepen-dently and with enthusiasm. Soon he “put his shoulder to the wheel”, as to streamline the technical aspects too. In a short period he gathered a group of people around himself, profession-als and interested. He showed that he could develop contacts and maintain good alignment with others troughout the department.

In our progress interviews he informed me short and concise about his work. He demonstrated not only being able to work targeted, but showing initiative too by delivering his own propositions. The symposium became a profound success, and thanks to Niels.

It was a pleasure to have had Niels working in our department, I can highly recommend him.
