This infographic represents a non-exhaustive timeline of Lutheran hymnals published in English in America, beginning with the first hymnals published in English by the various synods, following through with only the major publications (no supplements, chapel hymnals, children’s hymnals, etc.). The timeline attempts to show influences.

The solid lines trace the order of the hymnals in each synod. The dotted lines trace influences (especially in terms of included orders of service and rites) from each hymnal.

No covers were immediately available for the first four hymnals chronologically, so the images merely represent the hymnbooks.

Technically The Lutheran Hymnal was produced as a result of the four synods in the Synodical Conference, but the influence of the WELS and especially the LCMS outweighed the other two smaller church bodies.
