• The Oxford English Dictionary lists about 500 000 words and a further half-million technical and scientific terms remain uncatalogued.

• Like all languages, English is a mixture of dialects used by different groups that made up this nation in the past. This language comes in part from the Germanic languages (provided by the Anglo-Saxons in Northern Europe) and the French language (provided by the Normans from northern France).

• Bacon, casting, club, parking, hamburger, match, piercing, pull-over, shopping, stop, surf, handicap…

• Cassette, exemple, camera, accident, animal, excellent, table, atmosphere, automobile, college, fruit…

• And pigs might fly = Quand les poules auront des dents.

• A little bird told me = C’est mon petit doigt qui me l’a dit.

• It's raining cats and dogs = Il pleut des cordes.
