Meet Nina—Former EIS Moscow East Student

We are proud that our former students have fond memories of their time with us at EIS. This week we hear from Nina who has gone onto successfully completing her degree and is now working in the world of Communication. Nina kindly answered some questions about her memories of EIS East.

When were you at EIS? Nina attended EIS in Year 10 January 2010 and left after completing A Levels in the Summer of 2014. Where in the World are you now? Nina’s family continues to travel between Slovenia and Moscow. Since finishing her A-levels at EIS Nina completed a BA in Media Communications in Vienna, Austria and a MA in Society, Culture and Media in Leeds, UK. This year Nina started a job as a Communications Coordinator with an international company in Budapest, Hungary. What did you enjoy most during your time at EIS? Nina and her parents appreciated the help to make the transition from the Russian schooling system to the International one; making the change as smooth as possible. This continued to help Nina throughout her time at EIS. Nina enjoyed going to school and making friends from different countries. She also enjoyed art and developing her creative side; also producing work that she was proud of. How did EIS help you to become the person you are today? By broadening Nina horizons and expanding her worldview. Her parents also believe that it made Nina more independent, as she had to travel across Moscow by herself to get to school on time. Since leaving school what successes come to mind? Nina said that there are a couple so it was hard to choose: Nina completed both degrees with honours and also wrote an article for a university newspaper whilst studying in the USA. Final thoughts from Nina… “I joined EIS in the middle of the school year with very limited English. I enjoyed the accommodating atmosphere and the size of classes, which were small enough to allow every teacher to provide every student with the attention they needed. In years 12 and 13, I appreciated that the teachers trusted us to be responsible enough with our studies and preparations for exams, but were still there for us and ready to help. I would say that EIS helped improve my English language skills, which allowed me to have a wider choice when applying to universities. The structure of the curriculum (the need to choose 4 subjects for A-levels) also allowed me to pay attention to my interests and strengths and focus on them either later on at university or in my spare time.”

Subject Focus Geography

YEAR 9 The Year 9s have been studying different types of industry this week, exploring the different sectors of industry and what jobs fit into which sector, as well as looking at how industry has changed over time and how industry sectors differ from the developed world to the developing world. Some excellent explanations were given for these changes in industry sectors across nations, demonstrating a secure understanding of what can be quite a challenging topic. This is a subject area that comes up in the IGCSE Geography course so they will hopefully be well prepared for when this unit comes up next year!

The first element of change is awareness. You cannot change something unless you know it exists. The aim of our Geography lessons at EIS, is to make our students aware, so they can go out into the world and make the changes needed to bridge the divide, bring people together and make our world a better place.

“The study of Geography is about more than just memorizing places on a map. It’s about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that ex-ists across continents. And in the end, it’s about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people to-gether”.

------ Barack Obama -----

Together with AWARENESS, this is exactly what we want to teach our students at EIS: to bridge divides and bring people together. Secondary students have not just studied and covered their curriculum this term, but we have also been focusing on global events. Current events, like the outbreak of the Coronavirus, the eruption of the Taal volcano in The Philippines, the devastating bush fires in Australia and the flooding in the UK have been looked at in class. Daily updates are important to make sure our students are aware and informed and kept up to date about these events. As the epidemic spreads across neighbouring China and Europe, our students need to be reassured that they are safe from the disease and what steps they need to take to protect themselves from it.

YEAR 7 In addition to the current events, our Year 7 students have focused on Glaciers and the impact of Global Warming on the glaciers. We looked at what we could do to help slow down the process and the eventual reversal of it in order to save our planet.

YEAR 8 The Year 8 students looked at World Population and Migration and the impact our ever growing population is having on our planet. This highlighted issues like pollution, over-crowded cities, the impact on our natural resources and the creation of social issues. We also touched on the subject of forced migration and how many people in the world are affected by this, the reasons why they are forced to migrate and the hardships faced.

YEAR 10 & 11 The Year 10 and 11 students are focused on the IGCSE programme and the Year 11 students are in full preparation for their up-coming final exam.

Even though we were not able to share our

performances for International Women’s Day with our

parents and friends, we were able to record our

students performing their songs, dances and music. A

big thank you to our music teacher Miss Oxana.

Amazing Watercolours is a new club open to young artists from Years 1-6.

In our sessions, we learn both about traditional and modern techniques of water colour painting in a fun and exciting way. The children enjoy colour mixing, experimenting with various brushes and additional materials as they create their own unique works of art. This week we had a go at painting a blossoming cherry tree!

This week we had a chance to check how electromagnetic force works.

We did several experiments:

1. We placed piece of paper on the top of up-standing pencil, rubbed the rubber stick hard with fur to give it an electromagnetic force and when we placed stick near the paper the paper started to move.

2. 2. After we saw this force in action we wondered if it will work through a glass cup. All of a sudden we discovered that the paper did move under the force influence.

3. The same way thin water stream of water will move towards electromagnetic object such as balloon.

4. Making soap bubbles where very fun activity that surprised children as well.

Nursery and

Reception

Year 1 & 2 This week, we have enjoyed learning how to count in halves as well as twos, fives and tens. We have explored how you can make the same number using different groups and how you can write this into a number sentence. In English, we have explored the ai sound family (ai, ay, a_e, eigh) and practised reading and writing words containing these sounds. We have also discussed how fairytales and traditional tales travel around the world - by people telling them through pictures, actions and voice, regardless of the language. We learnt about a man called Pie Corbett, who helps children 'talk' a story before writing it down. We will learn a story using 'Talk for Writing' and tell it in our upcoming class assembly in a few weeks. In science and topic, we have been learning about animals around the world in their natural habitats. We have focused on animals under the sea and learnt some amazing facts about them!

Eyfs learned the sound “ie” making a tie for their daddy and singing a song The captain said,”/ie/-/ie/!”They role played being pirates, read cvc words, played with Y1&2 and enjoyed exploring a new online learning platform.

Please find your child's new Seesaw code at the front of their contact books. We have been practicing logging onto Seesaw and uploading videos and photos of our learning. See if your child can do this at home too!

Year 3 & 4

In English, we have learnt about Rabbit and Fuzzy Zebra Syllables! This might not sound like ways that will help us to read, but you will be surprised at how helpful these rules are to help us sound out and spell words - ask us what the rules mean! We have read about some scientists that want to change the calendar so that leap days don't exist any more. We read the article, and then decided that we like the current way of having an extra day every four years much better than the plan the professors were suggesting!

In Maths, Year 3 have been looking at angles, shapes, lines and perimeter. We have been using Right Angle Monsters to figure out if angles are 90', bigger than, or smaller than 90'. Year 4 has been exploring different ways of solving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division questions.

In Topic, we have each chosen a King or Queen from history who we want to learn more about. We are looking forward to learning about Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria, Cleopatra, Vlad the Impaler, Ivan the Terrible, Henry XIII, Peter the Great, and King Charles l.

In Science, we have been learning about fresh water versus salt water. Only about 1% of water on the earth's surface is flowing fresh water! We then learnt about underground water and aquifers. We had to build a new city, using clues from the soil, rocks, plants, and terrain to help us choose a location where our city would be able to get water.

Year 5 have been checking

out Seesaw this week; an

online learning platform.

They also overcame their

nerves to take part in the

Pi Day Times Table Bee.

In Maths students looked

at the grid method for

multiplication. Having

started wth TUxTU, they

progressed onto

progressively harder

questions. They looked at

how an estimation can be

used before calculating to

help them identify the

likelihood of their answer

being correct.

In English this week, students

continued their unit of short

stories. They explored a story

called hunted and discovered

that ‘story pegs’ can be used to

summarise paragraphs to given

an overview of what they are

reading about. They used this

concept to plan their own short

story with a twist.

This week in Maths, Year 6 have continued their work on data handling. They further developed their understanding of averages and learned about how and when they may be used in "Real world" situations. The children also worked with line graphs, examining how they can display trends in data over time. In English, the children took on the role of TV news reporters. They wrote and performed a news report based on the events of the 2015 earthquake in Nepal. To do this they had to conduct their own research into the event and also learn about the features of a television news report. Everybody did a great job!

Year 5

Year 6

Year 5 and 6 Science

In Science this week, Years 5 and 6 planned and conducted an investigation

into the flexibility of different materials. They considered ways they could test

each material while ensuring it was a fair test. They then worked in groups to

carry out the tests. As they went, the children recorded their observations

before drawing conclusions about the flexibility of each material.
