Current events: fall activities • There are very few US Thanksgiving Activities. Most are lazy ones.

• Watch football• Watch a Thanksgiving parade• Eat

• But there are many fall time activities!• Fall festivals• Hay rides• Bobbing for apples• Picking pumpkins and other fruit/vegetables• Paint or carve pumpkins (for Halloween) • Corn mazes • Viewing the fall foliage

Synchronous (Real-time) Communication When technology is used for chatting simultaneously with others• Benefits • Can create incentive to learn a foreign language • Less threatening, more enjoyable• The teacher is not the focus•No wait time (unlike email, etc.)• Fewer problems with turn-taking or being interrupted (unlike face-to-face conversations in class)

Asynchronous Communication

• When technology is used to communicate, but not simultaneously with others• Benefits • Slows down communication, allowing more time to read, process, reflect and respond • Anxiety is decreased among some students• Authentic reasons to communicate, relevant topics•No time difference worries

Teaching Methodology in CMCCan vary greatly between classrooms

Lee Students in two different classrooms chatted about topics that interested them, which were decided upon during week one.

Chung Students from Korea and Canada worked on tandem projects related to their languages and cultures.

Limitations on CMC

• Students can disregard accuracy• Large chat rooms may be confusing or overwhelming for learners• Students not used to technology may be negative

• Not to be used as the sole basis of a class• Works best when part of a larger class

Integrating CMC into English Class Can be paired with other activities to improve English

Lee Students were first introduced to the weekly topic, had a chat room session, followed by a tailor-made English lesson based on the students’ errors. Students later had face-to-face discussion and worked in small groups on an activity related to the topic.

Yuan Non-native university professionals took part in an individual one hour chat room session and had a one hour meeting with Yuan each week.
