Thesis:

• Create interest, provide background, orient the reader, and assert the purpose of the paper (thesis statement).

• Include the title of the novel and the author’s name. The title of the book should be italicized. EXAMPLE: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

• Background biography or sketching of the historical moment you are discussion (the depression or Civil Rights era).

• Your thesis statement should include 1. the novel title and author (if they have not previously been mentioned), 2. your opinion on how research of bio or historical moment sheds new light on the literary qualities/elements of the novel, and 3. how you’re going to prove your point (roadmap). • THESIS STATEMENT: Catcher in the Rye by J.D.
