Heat engine- Devices converting heat energy into motion are commonly

referred to simply as engines.

Types-

There are two type of engines

1. Internal Combustion Engine

2. External Combustion Engine

Page 4: Engines

Internal combustion engine- Combustion takes place inside engine called I.C.Engine.

Examples. Jet engine, Automobile Engine etc.

External combustion Engine- Combustion takes place outside engine

Examples. Turbines, steam locomotive etc.

Classification on the basis of cylinder

1. Single cylinder engine

2. Multi cylinder engine

1. Single cylinder engine- A single cylinder engine is a basic piston engine configured of an internal combustion engine.

Example. Motorcycles, auto rickshaw, scooter, moped etc.

Page 9: Engines

2. Multi cylinder engine- It consist multiple cylinder and balancing of all piston is very complicated as compare to single cylinder engine

Page 10: Engines

These multi cylinder engine may be of different types

Some of them are

1. Two cylinder engine

2. Three cylinder engine

3. Four cylinder engine

4. Five cylinder engine

And many more.

Arrangement of cylinder can be

Straight twin engine

V- twin engine

Flat twin engine

U-engine

Page 11: Engines

Two cylinder engine- It consist two cylinder configured to rotate crankshaft. Each piston revolve crankshaft at 360’

Page 12: Engines

Three cylinder engine- These type of engine consist of three cylinder and crank throws at 120’.

Page 13: Engines

Four cylinder engine- Consist of four cylinder

Page 14: Engines

Five cylinder engine- Five piston works at same time these types of engine is called five cylinder engine.
