It is easy to get caught up in the daily grind of work and the chaos going on in our evening news and forget about the real things in life that mat- ter to us most. I was reading an article the other day that talked about what being thankful actually means. While being thankful can mean many different things to each of us, the author (in my opinion) did an excellent job in detailing this. She talked about how being genuinely thankful re- quires a conscious effort to clear out our daily busyness and chaos that is around us and to pause and reflect on the people, things, events, second chances, or whatever it is that is meaningful to us. I hope this holiday season you to take a moment to put a pause on life and reflect on those things that you are thankful for. I am specifically thankful for all of our Arkansas ASHRAE volunteer officers, committee chairs, and committee members whom have worked so hard for our Chapter to bring value to your membership. There are many hours spent each month by these volunteers to put on programs, fundraisers, support our stu- dents, and promote various other ASHRAE activities. Next time you see one of these volunteers, please be sure to reach out to them and thank them for their time. The last few years the Arkansas ASHRAE Student Activity Chair has been successful in coordinating efforts of The University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, Arkansas Tech University, Arkansas State University, and University of Arkansas at Little Rock ASHRAE Student Branches to attend the ASHRAE Winter Conference. In order to send students to this conference, our Chap- ter has helped with fundraisers and coordi- nated donations from our vendors in order to make these trips / experiences happen for our students. This year will be no different. Josh Faulkner is coordinating a Pork Butt fundraiser. All proceeds will go towards sending these students to Orlando in Janu- ary. Please contact Josh Faulkner if you are interested in purchasing a Pork Butt to sup- port our Arkansas ASHRAE Students. So- ciety has recently made an amendment to the Constitution and Bylaws for Chapters. An Ad-hoc Committee comprised of Rus- sel Black, Ron McCarty and Chance Hol- lingsworth was developed to review the amendment and update our Constitution and Bylaws. Per the Constitution and By- laws (paragraph 10.2) if amendments are made by Society “Written copies of said amendments shall be sent by the chapter secretary to all members, or an officer of the Chapter shall read said amendments at the next succeeding chapter meeting.” A revised Constitution and Bylaws will be emailed out this month to all members as well as posted to our website. The amend- ment made by Society now includes a de- scription and definition for Grassroots Gov- ernment Advocacy Committee, specifically the inclusion of paragraph 8.3.1.7. Please do not forget about our membership pro- motion night on Thursday December 3, from 6:00 – 8:00 at Lost Forty Brewery. We hope to see you, your spouse/ significant other and a prospective ASHRAE member. There were many member requests to provide a continuing education seminar before the end of the year. With our very own Hamid Habibi giving us an ASHRAE Standard 62.1 up- date for our program this month, Mark Ely was able to procure an ASHRAE Distin- guished Lecturer, Hoy Bohanon, to follow this by covering more specifics of Standard 62.1 in regards to multiple space equations and demand control ventilation. Please be sure to secure your spot for this seminar by registering for this event. We hope to see you at our December meeting! The holidays are here which hopefully means great food, friends, and family for you! It is easy to get caught up in the daily grind of work and the

chaos going on in our evening news and forget about the real things in life that mat-ter to us most. I was reading an article the other day that talked about what being thankful actually means. Meeting Notes

The following are items that were discussed during the NWA ASHRAE Board of Governors meeting: Meeting began at 7:30am. Kim has new name tags to start being used at the monthly lunches. Davin noted that we need to push to get people more excited about ASHRAE. Davin also stated that the best way to bring in new people is to make ASHRAE fun. It's easiest to do that with Social events and YEA. Sam stated that everything is still way too vendor driven and vendors are going to get frustrated and tired of never help-ing with ASHRAE. Jim noted that he got involved in ASHRAE because the leader of his company informed him about it. He told everyone that we have got to go to the top of the companies to make the sales pitch, not the engineers themselves. Will talked about how ineffective having vendors try to sell ASHRAE to engineers. Debbie discussed that Star Chapter has some issues that need fixed. Debbie is also working with LR to make more payment options than PayPal. Davin talked about how much more difficult it is to register with Star Chapter compared to last year's RSVP method. Sam noted that local Engineering firms have got to get more involved to make ASHRAE successful. Engineers in NWA that need to be targeted to get more involved:

· HP · Henderson · Benchmark · Core States · HFA · Engineering Elements

TME is the only significant engineering presence in NWA ASHRAE. Will also talked about how much it would benefit the section to get Scott Turley and the University of Arkansas in-volved. Davin noted that he believes the NWA section is still two years away from becoming a standalone chapter. Sam agreed. Sam discussed Full Circle and everyone on the NWA BOG getting involved and doing their part. The goal is for it to be done by the end of next week (November 13). Davin would like everyone to work more at filling out POEA points. Davin also alerted everyone to new budget line items for this fiscal year. One item is money for members of the BOG whose company won't help pay for CRC attendance. Jim talked about how ASHRAE members use to bring their families and spouses to events years ago. Davin encouraged everyone to work towards getting spouses more involved in possible Social events. Davin talked about documenting points for the upcoming student trip to Ruskin. Davin wants to start involvement in the newsletter. He will look for an old Razorback Report template. Aric will begin putting together a YEA event to be held the week after the December ASHRAE meeting. Airetech has volunteered to be a sponsor of the event. Davin moved to adjourn. Debbie seconded. Arkansas ASHRAE History Russell Black – Historian

Leadership Recall Interview: Kent Pettit (March 30, 1999, Interviewer: Tim Staley – Arkansas Chapter Historian)

Kent Pettit was president of Arkansas ASHRAE in 1958. Earlier, Kent had worked in conjunction with his father (Ernest

M. Pettit) to start the Arkansas Chapter of ASHRAE (ASHVE) in 1952. Together, Kent and his father represent the foun-

dation of ASHRAE in Arkansas, and both have been elected into the Arkansas ASHRAE Hall of Fame.

(Special Note: 1999 Gold Ribbon Award Interview)

QUESTION #1: Would you give a brief biographical sketch of your life. (Place of birth, family size, early schooling, higher

education, employment background, current family, etc.)

Mr. Pettit was bom in 1925, at St. Vincent Infirmary Hospital when it was located on High Street. Mr. Pettit is an only child of

Mr. Ernest N. Pettit and Rosalee Pettit. Mr. Pettit attended a few years of elementary school at Centennial Elementary in

Little Rock. He completed his lower education in Kansas City. Mr. Pettit obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the Uni-

versity of Texas at Austin. After college, Mr. Pettit helped his father start Pettit and Pettit Consulting Engineers in Little Rock.

Mr. Pettit became a licensed engineer in Texas prior to moving to Little Rock and obtained an Arkansas license through reci-

procity. The consulting engineering firm was started in 1949.

QUESTION #2: Please describe what attracted you to the engineering industry as well as your first job in the engineering

industry.

Mr. Pettit's father and grandfather attracted him to the engineering industry.

QUESTION #3: How and when did you get involved in ASHRAE?

Mr. Pettit's father (Ernest) became a member of ASHRAE while living in Houston. Ernest Pettit, Jim Brown, and others

wanted to form a chapter in Arkansas. Jim Brown was the first president of Arkansas ASHVE before obtaining an official

charter. Ernest Pettit was president of Arkansas ASHRAE when it received its charter in 1952. Kent Pettit was one of the

founding members and assisted the chapter in obtaining its charter.

QUESTION #4: Please describe the Chapter, Regional, and Society positions that you have held.

Mr. Pettit has held numerous positions at the Chapter, Regional, and Society level. These include routing through the com-

mittee chairs and officer positions at a chapter level, Regional Vice Chairman, a number of ASHRAE Society Technical Com-

mittees, and a Director at Large Position in Society. Mr. Pettit is also an ASHRAE Fellow, an Arkansas Chapter Life Member,

a recipient of the Regional Award of Merit, and a recipient of the ASHRAE Distinguished Service Award.

QUESTION #5: Can you recall what challenges faced you and others as founding members of Arkansas ASHRAE?

Mr. Pettit stated that the charter was reasonably easy to obtain. He could not recall any specific challenges.

Page 10: ENGINAIRE...Arkansas ASHRAE History Page 9-10 NWA Trap Shoot Page 11 ASHRAE Learning Institute Page 12 ASHRAE Events & Ads Page 13 The holidays are here which hopefully means great

QUESTION #6: How do you think the involvement in Arkansas ASHRAE today compares to the involvement in the 1950's,

1960's, and 1970's?

Initially, engineers and plant managers were very involved in ASHRAE. There was an excitement about ASHRAE in Arkan-

sas when the chapter was first founded. Since this time, it appears that engineers have had less involvement in Arkansas

ASHRAE.

QUESTION #7: As a past Arkansas ASHRAE President, what were some of the major issues facing the HVAC industry at

that time?

Providing quality programs and involving more people in the industry to foster growth of a new chapter.

QUESTION #8: What was the single greatest challenge that faced you during the years you served as an officer for the

Arkansas Chapter?

During his presidency, the Arkansas Chapter hosted a Region VIII CRC. This was by far his biggest challenge.

QUESTION #9: Who were your supporting Chapter Officers?

Howard Lammons - Treasurer, Otis McCallister, Jr. - Secretary, and Allen Bullard - Vice President QUESTION #10: What

people stand out as influences on you?

Mr. Pettit's father, Ernest N. Pettit, has the largest influence on Kent Pettit's life.

QUESTION #11: What advice would you give a young individual starting out in the HVAC industry today?

A young engineer must obtain his or her professional engineering license. This individual must also become involved in

ASHRAE and be willing to serve at all levels.

QUESTION #12: What advice would you give a current or future ASHRAE Chapter Officer?

Be willing to serve. Give something back to an industry that has given so much to you. An individual must serve locally before

serving regionally and nationally.

QUESTION #13: Please describe any humorous and/or significant historical event(s) that you recall from your ASHRAE

experience.

Mr. Pettit recalls that ASHRAE was a very joyful and rewarding part of his professional and personal life. It provided numer-

ous opportunities that he and his family may not have otherwise experienced. He recalls that an interesting part of the in-

volvement with ASHRAE was when Arkansas hosted the CRC during his presidency. The CRC tour that year was a tour of a

Titan missile site. Mr. Pettit unfortunately did not get to attend.
