The Faculty’s scholarship program ensures

that the most talented students, regardless

of their background and financial standing

There are over 22,000 UQ engineering,

architecture and information technology

graduates working in, and leading industries

across the world. From Brisbane’s leading

design firms, to Queensland’s biggest

engineering and resource companies, to

large multinational organisations – our alumni

continue to achieve significant professional

success at all levels, and give back their

advice, guidance and support to further the

educational experience and knowledge of

our current student cohort.

With an annual research budget of

$45million, the Faculty provides a rich and

diverse flow of breakthrough technologies

that are helping to improve communities

around the world. From biomedical

engineering to sustainable architectural

design, our research outcomes are not only

solving problems for local and international

communities, but also our industry partners.

The Faculty is made up of five

Schools and one Centre:

- School of Architecture

- School of Chemical Engineering

- School of Civil Engineering

- School of Information Technology and

Electrical Engineering

- School of Mechanical and Mining

Engineering

- Advanced Water Management Centre

The Faculty brings together some of the world’s

leading researchers, teachers and students

in the fields of engineering, architecture,

multimedia design and information technology.

FACT 1: A world-class education for

domestic and international students

In 2011 the Faculty enrolled over four thousand

domestic students and almost a thousand

international students in undergraduate and

postgraduate programs. These students are,

by independent measure, some of the brightest

and most capable young people enrolling in

Engineering, Architecture and ICT programs

nationwide.

We are ranked in the top one percent of

universities world wide. UQ placed 48th in the

QS World University Rankings, 74th globally by

the Times Higher Education World University

Rankings, and 86th by the 2011 Academic

Ranking of World Universities as published by

Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

the Faculty’s programs. These

programs better prepare students

for the rigour and demands of the

workforce upon graduation and

provide you with access to some

of UQ’s top talent before you make

employment decisions.

provided internships for UQ students for

a number of years due to the numerous

benefits our organization have gained

from this practice. Not only do we keep

in contact with the current curriculum

studied by students, we benefit from the

focus they bring to projects which are

otherwise difficult to be resourced.

As a result of our internship program, we

have subsequently employed a number of

UQ graduates that have shown they have

and Master of Engineering requires students

to undertake a semester placement either in

industry or research, the first program of its

kind in Australia. Both our general internship

CONSULTANCY

The Faculty performs a wide range of

industry relevant research and provides

industry with leading-edge research

capability not found elsewhere. Examples of

research centres within the Faculty include:

- The Aboriginal Environments Research

Centre provides research and consulting

into the culture, environment and

architecture of Australian Indigenous people

- The Advanced Water Management Centre

is an international centre of excellence

in innovative water technology and

management and provides expertise and

capacity to offer high-quality services to

government and industry

- The University of Queensland Materials

Performance provides consultancy and

research in materials and metallurgical

engineering, failure analysis, durability and

degradation of metals and polymers

- Pyrosearch undertakes consulting and

test work for the minerals industry in

pyrometallurgy

UniQuest is able to facilitate industry

engagement with academics in the Faculty

and supervises over 500 consulting and

research projects each year for private, non-

profit and public sector clients.

RESEARCH COMMERCIALISATION

With an annual research budget of $45
