bowERS’ EcodESIGN RANGEAlways at the forefront of new technology and materials, Bowers’ new Ecodesign range of super-efficient transformers is fully compliant with new EU Commission Regulation 548/2014. Since July 2015, all small,

medium and large power transformers that are commissioned must meet strict new minimum energy efficiency requirements. The aim is to reduce CO2e emissions across the EU and in 2021 a second tier of legislation will require transformer designs to be even more energy efficient. The Bowers Ecodesign range,

developed in conjunction with the national and European bodies responsible for producing the new harmonised Ecodesign transformer standards, includes the standard tier 1 range as well as the Eco BEST – a concept based on our top-selling BEST transformer, which exceeds the minimum savings requirements set in place by the EU. Both lines are available now and bespoke

transformers can also be designed and engineered to meet customers’ exact specifications and EU regulations, by Bowers’ in-house team in Heanor, Derbyshire.

There areseveral suppliers of

transformers in the UK but wewanted a company that offered

three things: quality, reliability and, of course, customer service. Bowers supplied high quality equipment on

time and with professional installationas well as customer service.

The transformer efficiency curve highlights the advantage of a 1000kVA Bowers Eco BEST transformer over a standard Tier 1 Ecodesign Transformer.

This effi ciency curve high-lights the advantage of a 1000kVA bowers Eco bESt

transformer over a standard tier 1 Ecodesign unit.

Engineered by the highly skilled team at the Derby HQ, the Bowers Eco BEST transformer takes the energy saving capabilities of the Ecodesign Tier 1 range a step further, having been developed by our in-house designers to offer even greater savings and a quick return on investment. In fact, we believe the losses the Eco BEST range can achieve makes it one of the greenest transformers available on the global market today. Affordable, and with all the guarantees

that the Bowers name brings, this top-selling range is manufactured to BSEN60076 standards to any size and voltage range up to 3150kva at 11kV,both for stock – ensuring a fast turnaround from the time of order – and to meet customers’ specifi c requirements.Featuring an alternative to voltage

optimisation – in the form of a standard six-position tap changer which is built in to allow fi xed voltage adjustment of up to 7.5% – the Eco BEST range promises a considerable reduction in energy losses during operational service. It does so thanks to Bowers’ use of the

highest quality low-loss materials, as well as the use of highly-specialist winding techniques – including wire, strip and foil winding. This combination of fi rst class materials

and expertise enables a substantial reduction in load losses, when compared to a standard Eco transformer. One of the range’s greatest benefi ts is its size; Eco BEST transformers are much smaller than the amorphous core alternatives available elsewhere on the market.Highly effi cient in all instances, but

especially at premises with high load utilisation factors, a typical Eco BEST unit can reduce a client’s annual electricity bills by around £4,500 a year, compared to an equivalent kVA standard transformer.Over the course of a unit’s average

25-year lifespan, savings can total £110,000-£115,000 – without taking into consideration infl ation and rising energy costs: not bad when you consider that customers with sites deemed suitable for voltage optimisation can typically expect to recover the additional supply and installation costs in around two years.

Regardless of changes to voltage regulations or harmonisation, Bowers’ Eco BEST transformers will continue to make savings throughout the lifespan of the unit. Each unit is designed with HV and LV

fl anges to BS2562 facings suitable for the accommodation of bolt-on HV and LV cable boxes or LV transformer mounted feeder pillars/ACB/MCCB cabinets and transformer mounted HV switchgear (built to ENATS standards). All Bowers’ Ecodesign units are also

fi tted with bolt-on panel radiators and have been purposely designed so that HV switchgear can be fi tted without interfering with the radiators – removing the need for extension throats and radiator elbows. Ecodesign Tier 1 and Eco BEST

transformers are available in a comprehensive range of cooling arrangements, from conventional mineral oil to the natural and synthetic esters e.g. FR3 and Midel – often used in high-risk transformer applications, such as indoors or offshore.

Among the benefits of working with Bowers Electricals are the company’s in-house capabilities. With a 70-strong

team of technical, commercial and manufacturing experts, Bowers is in a unique position to create bespoke energy saving solutions for clients, with a fast turnaround. From a project involving a single wind

turbine that earns its pig farmer-owner a £200,000-a-year income, to Egyptian goldmines, African factories with unreliable and irregular power supplies, large-scale solar farms and high-voltage transformers built to fit into the cramped basements of City of London financial establishments, Bowers has a wealth of experience working across many sectors. Commissioning a made-to-order solution

ensures that the transformer’s footprint is kept to a minimum, saving on civils works and transportation. A bespoke unit can be designed so that it can be lifted into place in one piece, rather than a lengthy site installation and, what’s more, non-standard Bowers transformers are available at only slightly more than the price of a standard Bowers unit.Reliability and attention to detail are two

qualities that we hold very dear at Bowers Electricals – that’s why we invite all of our clients to visit our UK factory and oversee the stringent testing of our power transformers before we put them into service.

‘ ‘With our

[wind] turbine and Bowerstransformer, we’re feeding

enough power back into the grid to take care of two entire villages. We’re

seeing a return on investment of around £200,000 a year ... Bowers did

a great job. Everything has been good and worked smoothly and I think it’s

been one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.
