Energy metals in BC: projects, potential and playing the market
BY: Luke Longridge & Matt Bodnar
What is an “Energy Metal”
The hype vs the real market
• Long-term (Copper, Uranium)
• Recent (Lithium, Graphite)
• Emerging (Cobalt, Nickel, Vanadium, REE, Zinc)
• New (Tin, PGE)
• Many of the recent/emerging energy metals have other uses, and their use as “energy metals” is only a small component of overall use
A range of metals used in the generation, storage and transmission of energy
The Hype...
The Reality…
• Some metals have a long history of use as “energy metals” (Cu, U)
• Used primarily for transmission and generation of power – large market
• Others are seeing sustained market growth due to emerging EV/energy storage
market (lithium, graphite, cobalt)
The Reality…
• But some of the recently hyped metals are only emerging as energy metals
(nickel, vanadium)
The Reality…
The Reality…
• And some have been forgotten as “energy metals”
The Other Side of the Hype Curve…
The Other Side of the Hype Curve…
Current Projects in BC
• Occurs as vanadiferous-titaniferous magnetite (VTM) deposits or within black shales
• Global Battery Metals (RedzoneResources) Wells Vanadium Project near Barkerville. 11 samples with 1,000 – 1852 ppm V (up to 0.33% V2O5) in phosphatic black shales
• Delrey Metals Corp – Porcher and Star Vanadium Properties. Mafic-ultramafic bodies with VTM mineralization, historical samples grading 0.34-0.84% V2O5.
Vanadium
• Ethos Gold Corp. – Pine Pass, Ursula and Tunnel Projects.
• North Bay Resources Pine River Project. >40 historical samples between 0.219% and 0.47% V
• Argentum Silver Corp. – Vanadium Ridge magnetite deposit, met tests gave a concentrate with 67% Fe and 1.32% V2O5)
Vanadium
• Occurs as brines or pegmatites,
neither are well known in BC
• First Energy Metals Limited –
Kootenay Lithium Property within the
Mount Begbie Li-rich pegmatite field
(Revelstoke)
• LCT pegmatites, with no drilling and
grab samples between 0.77% Li2O and
3.70% Li2O + elevated Rb & Cs
Lithium
• New World Cobalt – Hazelton Co-Cu-
Au project including Victoria Mine
(1918 -1941), where grades averaged
123.4 g/t gold and 2.8% cobalt.
• Blackstone Minerals – Little Gem
Cobalt Project. Co-Au association, +
Ag, Cu.
Cobalt
• Gigametals Turnagain: M&I = 865 mt
@ 0.21% Ni & 0.013% Co, (4 billion lb
of Ni & 250 million lb of Co)
• FPX Nickel Decar: Indicated – 1.159 bt
@ 0.124% recoverable Ni (awaruite)
• Garibaldi Resources Ni Mountain/E&L
- 40.4 m @ 3.9% Ni and 2.4% Cu.
Nickel
Jumbo project – 0.24% - 16% graphitic
carbon in grab samples
BC Sugar –mineralisation up to 2.62%
graphitic carbon
Black Crystal – mineral resources
Eagle Graphite – operating graphite flake
facility
Graphite
Additional Areas in BC
