Step 1 Search ASP and select records
Enter a search statement in ASP e.g. giant panda and conservation

1 Access ASP: HKUL Homepage > Electronic Resources > Key English E-resources > EBSCOhost research databases

On the result list, click on Add to folder to select the desired records. (Note: Or, click on Add (1-10) to select all records on this page.)

Step 2 Direct Export to Endnote
1 Once all records are marked, click on the Folder icon.
Tick the checkbox to select all records
2 Click on the Export icon. 3
Select Direct Export to Endnote and then click on the Save button. 4

Link to PDF full text
1 Get the PDF Full Text
2 Save the PDF file to your PC, e.g. desktop, or in the S:drive for PCs in HKUL. (Note: After linking it to your Endnote Library, you may delete this file.)
3 Return to your Endnote Library and double click on that article citation. This will open the Reference Window.

From the top bar menu: select References > File Attachments > Attach File Then, select the PDF file from your PC.
The PDF file will be saved under the field, File Attachments.

Note: 1. Another way to insert file attachments is to drag and drop the file onto the reference in either the Library window or the Reference window.
2. You can insert other file types, e.g. Word, Powerpoint, Excel files. 3. Up to 45 files per reference. 4. All file attachments are kept in the Data Folder of the corresponding Endnote
library.

From the result list, check those which you consider as relevant.
Step 1 Search Dragon and select your records
Search Dragon: HKUL Homepage > Dragon (HKUL Catalogue) > Keyword/ Phrase
Click on Save Marked Records.

Repeat 2 and 3 for the other result pages.

Once you have gone through all the result pages, click on Export Saved List.

Step 3 Import the results to Endnote
Click on Import icon 1
Click on Choose File and then select the downloaded file created in step 2.
Click on Import
The results from Dragon will be imported into your library. Click on All References to display all citations in your library.

Select Endnote Import (Dragon, U of Hong Kong) as the Import Option. (See note) 4
Note: 1. Download the Dragon Filter at the http://lib.hku.hk/endnote > Download Endnote.
2. First time users should select Other Filters and locate this Dragon Filter from the list.
Note: Alternatively, select File > Import from the top bar menu.

Note: To search remote databases via Endnote, you must:
(A) Download the HKU Connection files 1. Point to the EndNote@HKU page at http://lib.hku.hk/endnote 2. Click on Download Endnote 3. Click on HKU Connection Files 4. Download and unzip the file 5. Go to C:\ Program Files \ Endnote X3 6. Replace the content of the Connections Folder with the unzipped files (B) For remote access 1. Establish a HKU VPN connection before you search. 2. Find out more about HKU VPN - http://www.hku.hk/cc/home/networks/vpn.htm.

Switch to Online Search Mode. References will be saved to a temporary library.
Select the database from the list. Then, click on the Choose button.
Step 1 Connect to a database and search

Enter Web of Science into the search box and then press Enter. (Note: All connection files customized for HKU users precedes with hkul.)
Complete the Search template.

All records will temporarily be saved in the Online References Group. 3
Step 2 Retrieve and transfer results to Endnote
Once the search is completed, it will show the number of records retrieved.
1 2 Click OK to retrieve the results.
4 Select the reference(s) you wish to keep. Then, click on the Copy to Local Library icon.
Return to the Integrated Library and Online Search Mode. (Note: All references in the temporary Online References Group will be gone once you switch back to this mode.)

Find Full Text
Locate and download full text by matching selected HKUL subscribed resources
Works best on Campus!
Highlight the reference(s) you would like to find full text. Note: For all references: Hold down Ctrl key + A. For individual references: Hold down the Ctrl key and click the references. For a range of references: Hold down the Shift key.
Click on the Find Full Text icon.

Once Find Full Text is completed, Endnote will display: ● Found PDF: Number of PDFs found. ● Found URL: If EndNote cannot find the full text, it will try to find the URL of the
provider’s web page for the article for easier future access. ● Not Found: Number of records without PDF/URL attached.

Open Link
Go to the Database Record to get the full text, if available.
For records with a durable URL, highlight the record and then press on Open Link icon

The article record will open in a web browser. 2
If the full text article is available online, save the document and attach it to the Endnote record. See p. 5 Link to the PDF full text.

Before you begin… Set up your Scholar preferences...
Step 1 Search in Google
Step 2 Direct Export
to Endnote
Under Library Links, select “University of Hong Kong Libraries - HKU Webbridge”. This will establish the shortest path to full text sources from the HKU Libraries. (Note: If the option is not there, locate it using the Find Library search box.)
Under Bibliographic Manager, select Show links to import citations into and then choose Endnote from the pull-down menu.
Once done, click on Save Preferences

Google Scholar allows exporting one record at a time. Click on Import into Endnote

Managing your Endnote Library V
1. Sort Library
Click on the tab, e.g. year to sort by the selected field.
2. Search Library Click on the Search Tab and then fill in the template.
Enter Search Terms
Select Comparison list
Select Field
Add or remove Search Lines

3. Remove Duplicates
From the top bar menu, choose References > Find Duplicates 1
2 Select the record you would like to keep. (Note: If you would like to keep both records, click on Skip.)

4. Custom and Smart Groups (A) Custom Groups Manually add references to a group. The list of references in a custom group will not
change unless you manually add or remove references from the group.

From top bar menu, select Groups > Create Group 1
A new group will be created. You can change the name of the group.
3 Highlight the references you wish to add to this group. Then, select Groups > Add References To > A custom group (Note: Or, you can Drag and drop it to the group)

4. Custom and Smart Groups (B) Smart Groups Groups are created by applying search criteria to the library. This will dynamically update
groups as existing references are edited or new references are added to the library.

From top bar menu, select Groups > Create Smart Group 1
Change the name of the group.

Note: 1. Removing a reference from a smart group will delete it from the library. 2. Maximum 500 groups (custom and smart groups combined)

Both the enl file and the Data Folder will be saved as copy.
Select File > Save a Copy

(B) Compressed Library Save as a single file, making it convenient to send it by email.

(a) Create/ Create and Email the compressed library?
(c) With or without the file attachments? If recipient of the compressed library does not have access rights to the pdf full text, choose “Without file attachments”.
(b) All references or selected references from a group?
Compressed library filename has the extension enlx.
