A VErY SUCCESSfUL PEACE of MUSIC

our summer event ‘A Peace of Music’ really had it all; an eclectic mix of excellent live acts, a number of

brilliant raffle prizes, lovely free cocktails supplied by Monkey Shoulder Whisky, a rare bit of July sun, and a crowd who were in good enough spirits to laugh at host Ben Shires’ jokes.

The night passed in a blur of good drinks, great music and even better conversation as alumni and supporters of Encompass, together with a whole horde of people new to our charity, mingled in our exciting Camden venue, The forge. The night was a great way of raising the profile of Encompass and reminding people of the continued importance of confronting stereotypes and changing perspectives. As well as helping us raise much needed funds, everyone received a free Encompass wristband, letting them take our message with them.

Juliette’s story Thanks to your gifts enabling me to go on the february 2011 Journey of Understanding, I have been inspired to attend a global Summer School in Korea, during which time I had the chance to meet and get to know people from many countries across the world including: Mexico, China, Japan, USA, Czech republic, Australia, Taiwan and of course Korea and Britain.

I feel very privileged to be joining the Encompass Trust at a time when our work is developing, our impact broadening and the

need for our efforts required more than ever.having been living in the Middle East this

year, I have witnessed the power of collaborative youth action across the region and spoken to many well educated and aware young people who are eager to engage with others from across the world. In the past six months the winds of change have swept through the Middle East, proving that if young people can identify a common cause then they can change their lives. The Arab Spring and Israeli Summer are a springboard from which a more inclusive and respectful world can be built. Now, more than ever, we have the opportunity to foster greater respect and tolerance in a world which has been characterised by increasingly polarised views. This is where the Encompass Trust comes in and why I am so excited to be joining as the new Programme Manager. We will be bringing more and more young people together from across the world to dispel myths, confront stereotypes and address grievances through our Journey of Understanding.

Indeed, this November I will be taking part in the next Journey of Understanding where I will be embarking on my own journey. having spoken with our staff across the world as well as our alumni, I know the programme is deeply impacting and I cannot wait to get out into the

I would like to introduce myself as the Chairman of Encompass Indonesia, heroe Soeprapto and say how happy I am to be writing about the work we have been doing here over the past eight years.

Encompass has been working in Indonesia since the beginning, and in April 2011 we were registered as an official organisation in our own right www.encompassindonesia.com/en/.

our participants have been extremely active in advocating the ideals of inclusiveness, respect and awareness which Encompass works so hard to promote. Alumni have held events such as the Encompass Awards in 2010, which brought together hundreds of children to take part in an art competition on the theme of ‘harmony in diversity’.

Current alumni are preparing for the Encompass Awards for 2011, which will focus on young people performing traditional music from. The team is also building a partnership with Malang State University where alumni will teach a module on multiculturalism to undergraduate students. This all comes on the back of a successful workshop on the theme of stereotyping conducted by the participants from the february 2011 Journey of Understanding.

We believe that the value of our young people taking part in the Journey of Understanding is in developing them as community leaders.

I am lucky enough to be supported by a hardworking team, which includes Bambang Sarasno as Program Coordinator, Bina Yuanita as Treasurer and Silka Abdayati as Secretary. Silka is a great example of the power of Encompass – as an alumnus of the Journey of Understanding, Silka decided to join the team and work to spread the message here in Indonesia.

beautiful Pembrokeshire countryside and jump into a freezing sea!

Whilst I am excited about the forthcoming programme, it is what our alumni do when they return home that is truly wonderful. I have learnt about the impressive work done by past participants in Indonesia, Israel, Palestine, the US and UK, where young people have held an ever growing number of projects to teach their peers about the inclusive values of Encompass. I will be working hard to support our young leaders when they return to their communities to ensure they are able to use their new found skills effectively.

“ Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead

Above all, I cannot express my happiness to be working with Encompass and I can assure you I will be working tirelessly to support our hardworking staff across the world to make sure the impact of our programmes is felt in each of our partner countries.

We are alumni from the February 2011 Journey of Understanding and as part of our Group Action Plan, we held a conference of multiculturalism at the Malang City Library on July 23rd 2011.

We gathered together lots of people from our university, so we could spread the message of our experience on the Encompass Journey of Understanding. We asked Mr. Atmo Asmoredjo (middle picture), a humanist speaker from

Malang, to speak at the conference along with Dr. Khoirul Adib, a lecturer from Malang University, on the subject of multiculturalism in Indonesia.

We talked about our experience with Encompass and how we need to unify as a country and world in order to live in peace with each other. We asked all attendees to sign a declaration that we must fight for a unified Indonesia, where everyone is considered equal regardless of religion or ethnicity (bottom picture).

It was the first conference of its kind in Malang, and we believe it was a very important way of ensuring our youth have open minds and the ability to treat everyone as equals. We know that the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow, so we want to spread the message of inclusiveness to all the youth in Indonesia.

We are very happy the conference was a success and we hope that if we continue our work, the possibility of racial conflict in Indonesia will be reduced as the youth will be well informed and able to foster greater unity across our country.

LEADErShIP TrAININg IN CANgAr

I am Puthu Akbar Duta and I, along with seven other alumni from the Journey of Understanding (JoU), recently organised

two weeks of survival training for applicants to the next JoU. I attended the february 2010 Journey, and since then I have been actively involved in helping others be prepared for going on the programme.

We took 20 young people who applied to the JoU on a leadership training course at Cangar in Indonesia. We took responsibility for organising and facilitating the course, making use of the skills we learnt whilst in the UK with Encompass.

I took on the role of Training & facilitation Leader, in which I was determined to test the ability of the applicants to deal with stressful situations and develop their ability to work together as a team. With the help of my colleagues, all alumni from 2009-2011 Journeys of Understanding, I took the participants through activities such as high ropes, water & fire as well as mountaineering. This included climbing Lembah Kembar hill,

which has a peak at over 3,000 metres above sea level! We know from the JoU that when you have to work as a team in stressful circumstances you develop leadership and organisational skills. We wanted to make sure the applicants were well prepared for the programme in the UK, so we worked them hard and tested their ability to deal with stressful situations. Also, we know that when you return from the Journey of Understanding it is important to spread the message of Encompass, so we held sessions on photography and documenting skills.

We really loved taking responsibility for the training of prospective Encompass participants and especially being able to take our experience from the Journey of Understanding to the next level! As the management team was made up of alumni, we know just how important it is to develop leadership and teamwork skills prior to going on the programme, all of which we feel we achieved during the two weeks of survival training in Cangar.

Does your company have a Charity of the Year?

If so, how about nominating Encompass? We are looking to join with companies so we can use each other’s skills to get our

message louder. This partnership is a fantastic way to help us build greater tolerance and understanding between young people to stop events such as the Bali bombing in 2002, or the attacks in July 2005 occurring again. This is a great way for staff to do something a bit different and will open the eyes of staff to different ways of confronting issues of conflict, stereotype and identity in their own lives.

Through our Charity of the Year scheme, staff from your company could meet participants from all of our countries, and get to see the impact of our work first-hand. We can run workshops in your place of work, letting you get involved and be on the receiving end of our work, while you can offer your skills, time and gifts in kind. As all of this takes place, we can work together to raise the profile of Encompass.

Why not do so for Encompass!

Each year people take part in runs for Encompass, and in 2012 we want to have even more runners! We are looking at getting places in every kind of run, from a 5k fun run to a full marathon, but we want to make sure we can fill them. If you, or some you know,

is interested in running in an event of any distance, please email or call Katie. By running for Encompass, you’re not only raising much needed funds, but you will also be challenging yourself and keeping fit. We will provide you with a sponsorship page, a running vest, training tips and support both in the run up to the event and on the day itself.

Taking part in an overseas event for Encompass is, like our Journey of Understanding, an experience you will never forget. Encompass has opportunities for people to cycle or trek in India, Jordan, Vietnam, South Africa and more. Each of these offers a challenge and the opportunity to experience new cultures, environments and natural wildlife.

For more information, please contact Katie: [email protected] or 0207 430 0247.

Your donations enable us to hold events such as A Peace of Music, where we can let more people hear the Encompass message. Thanks to all of you that attended the event, and a special thanks to the sponsors of the evening, and the musicians that provided some

fantastic entertainment. If you came to the event and want to hear Natascha Leonie’s beautiful voice again, we have a limited number of CDs of her latest album for sale. Please contact Katie for more information.

Thanks to our music event, we made many contacts and we’re pleased to say that partnerships are already building, which we’ll be reporting on in the next newsletter.

Thank you to all those that donate to Encompass. Whether you give once a year, once a month or somewhere in between, we want to say thank you. Your support helps young people to confront their stereotypes and change their perspectives, ensuring more people are confident and self-aware amongst other cultures.

If you would like to support our work, please fill in and return the form provided.
