From the Director...

Waves completed a rewarding year of providing services and supports for

people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Forty-one adults

increased their independent living skills and provided an average of 91

hours per month in community service/volunteer work. Thirty-two children

were involved in learning through play activities in the new early learning

classroom and eighty-eight children received intervention in their home or

a community setting. Twenty-nine individuals received residential services.

Two middle aged women had the opportunity to experience a beach

vacation for the first time in their lives.

Our strategic plan guided our efforts in relocating the administrative office

and children’s classroom to 145 Southeast Parkway. A special grant

through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act provided for the

construction of a playground and other furnishings and equipment for our

Early Learning Classroom. The addition of a Development and

Community Relations position allowed for the expansion of our efforts to

secure grant funding for music therapy services, increasing awareness of

Autism Spectrum Disorders, and expanding the scope of our annual Art

Show featuring work from Middle Tennessee area artists with disabilities.

A continued emphasis on strengthening relationships within our commu-

nity included the provision of two workshops for preschool directors and

educators and a memorandum of understanding with Community Housing

Partnership of Williamson County to provide social services to residents of

homes they secured and renovated specifically for individuals with

developmental disabilities. Relationships with businesses, churches and

United Way of Williamson County led to increasing involvement by

volunteers in many program operations.

We continue to be strengthened from the strong support of our board, staff,

families, United Way of Williamson County, local and state governments

and the community as a whole. Thanks to everyone for another year of

joining together to ensure that people we serve enjoy an enhanced quality

of life, have a sense of personal value, and are successfully included in

community activities.

Throughout this past year, Waves, Inc. was blessed by corporations, organizations and individuals who

were willing to volunteer their time, talents and energy to the programs of Waves. From providing home

improvements to offering a helping hand in our Early Learning Program, volunteers made so many lives

more meaningful. We appreciate the opportunity to recognize and thank the many volunteers for their

generosity.

Since our partnership began in 1980, United Way of Williamson County has provided valuable

volunteer opportunities at Waves. This past year was no different. Through the United Way of

Williamson County’s annual Day of Caring, Waves was partnered with: Merck, Journal

Communications, Strategy Corporations, Reliant Bank and AT&T Pioneers. Work for this day

included: office support, home maintenance and painting the rooms at our day program. The Youth

Advisory Council of United Way held a Christmas party, provided dinners and established a book club

for one of our residential homes. Waves is grateful for the United Way of Williamson County’s support

over the past thirty-eight years.

Waves also received an enormous number of volunteer hours from area churches. Members of Historic

Franklin Presbyterian Church, St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church,

Church of the Latter Day Saints, First United Methodist Church of Franklin and Rolling Hills

Community Church have taken part in activities ranging from yard work, sponsoring parties, sharing

produce from a community garden, providing an Angel Tree over the holidays to providing space for our

programs and in-services. The sponsors and youth of Catholic Heart Association spent one week in July

improving the facilities at our residential homes and day programs.
