Oral French I: Oral Comprehension and Expression (6410127) – 4 ECTSM.-C. Anastasiadi

Based on a variety of oral documents, the course aims to raise students' awareness of the specificities of speaking and global and selective comprehension techniques. The oral production is done with a precise communicative objective. The language registers/levels (standard, formal, familiar, etc.) used in specific communication situations (professional or official exchanges, exchanges between relatives, between people belonging to the same social group, etc.) will be discussed.

Written discourse I: Texts and Grammar (641015) – 5 ECTSAr. Moustaki

Focusing on essentially authentic texts, this module reflects contemporary French linguistic reality and has two objectives:1. Introduction to basic notions and techniques of approaching the written text and more precisely:• Analysis of various communication situations, focusing on the particularities of the written language (production and comprehension).• The notion of language level / style: familiarization with the recognition and reproduction of different language levels / styles in a written text.• The technique of summarizing and reformulating a written text; vocabulary enrichment.2. The development of linguistic awareness through the analysis of precise grammatical phenomena:• Introduction to the minimum and extended nominal group structure. The constituents of the nominal group; the expansion of the nominal group (propositional or non-propositional/phrastic or non-phrastic)• Substitute pronouns of the nominal group: personal pronouns and relative pronouns. Morphological and semantic-syntactic approach.

From Literature Texts analysis to production of Academic Speech (641023) – 4 ECTSIo.Papaspyridou

This course initiates first semester’s students to the study of French literature’s texts. It covers fiction as well as poetry and theater. Students learn, first of all, how to approach a literature’s text thanks to special “keys” and how to study in a different way fiction (using narratology’s terms, such as intertext, narrative scheme), poetry (the different forms of poems, rhyme, prosody but also imagery) and theater (act, scene, actantial scheme inspired by Greimas theory, stage instructions). We also try to bring students in touch with some of the more characteristic French literature’s texts from the nineteenth and the twentieth century. Students learn progressively how to proceed to a complete analysis of a literature’s text (“explication de texte”) and at the end of the semester they are supposed to be totally standalone and to complete this exercise working by themselves.

French Literature of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance: from the ideal of Chivalry to the Renaissance Humanism (641017) – 5 ECTSE. Condylis

Classical course for future teachers of French language.The premium literature in ancient French in French translation, the beginnings of the stylistics and its aesthetic that will become the canon for various European literatures.

Through the texts, the history of texts, of their writers, and the society where all these, people and texts were born, the student is called upon to enter into the deeper meaning of French humanism that influenced the whole Western Europe and recognize it in its historical continuity.

Studying contemporary France (641019) - 4 ECTSN. Manitakis

This course aims to initiate students into contemporary French Civilization and contemporary French Society. Themes that are explored include geography, immigration, colonial and post-colonial questions, the educational system, gender and family issues, cultural policy, religions, political institutions, urban violence and terrorism. The course, based on the extensive use of texts such as article journals and books, is taught in French.

From Feudalism to Absolute Monarchy: Political Institutions and Social Changes in France (641013) – 6 ECTSIr. Apostolou

This course offers an introduction to the history of French civilization dealing with a long period between the reign of Charlemagne and the death of Louis XIV in 1715. After a brief description of the Middle Ages and medieval heritage, we will analyze the French Renaissance and the « Grand Century ». Our teaching will focus on the passage to absolutism in France and the reinforcement of royal power. Through specific historical examples, we will discuss the political system and its practices as well as the institutions, administration, economy and structure of French society. Following the presentation of the main aspects of feudalism, we will explore French Renaissance, in relation to the cultural movement of the European Renaissance. More specifically, we will study humanism, the Italian wars, the religious crisis (Reformation and Counter-Reformation), religious wars and the economic and social changes. We will also analyze the concept of power and the restoration of peace under Henry IV. In the second part of the course, we will discover the 17th century. After a brief presentation of the regency of Marie de’ Medici, we will explore the reign of Louis XIII and the institution of the ministériat. Moreover, we will analyze the strengthening of royal power and the establishment of a modern administration. In addition, we will discuss the political rebellion known as the Fronde and its struggles against the royal power under the regency of Anne of Austria. A special emphasis will be placed on the reign of Louis XIV, the consolidation of monarchical power, the displays of absolutism and the organization of his government. The Ancien Régime’s society, the colonial and economic policy as well as religious life (conflict with the Pope, the Jansenist Controversy and the persecution of Protestants) will also be considered in this course. Finally, we will examine the crisis at the end of the reign of Louis XIV. Each theoretical part of the course is followed by an analysis of primary and secondary sources and images of different nature (paintings,

This course is dealing with the fundamental principles of Linguistics, the science which examines language, as a general human ability, through the diversity of natural languages: diachrony/synchrony, paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations, oral/written language, langage/langue/parole, immediate constituent analysis, linguistic sign, double articulation are among the notions to be examined. The second half of the course is dealing with the levels of linguistic analysis: phonetics, phonemics, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, as well as with the main linguistic theories: structuralism, generative linguistics, etc.Language: Greek3 hours weekly assessment: final written assessmente-class available

Oral French II: Oral Reports of authentic audio documents (6410128) – 4 ECTSM.-C. Anastasiadi

The course aims to train students to: - understand oral documents belonging to different types of texts;- develop listening note taking strategies;- present orally the content of the document, in a clear, concise and structured manner.

Written discourse II: Texts and Grammar (641018) – 5 ECTSAr. Moustaki

In this module, students become familiar with the comprehension of authentic texts taken from the French and Francophone press. With the help of keyword retrieval and reformulation technique, they make the text contraction (review).

Students are asked to identify the verbal group (the verb and its possible complements) in written texts.

The following types of sentences are taught: interrogative sentence, negative sentence and injunctive sentence.

Values and archetypes in French theatrical classic texts (641014) – 6 ECTSIo.Papaspyridou

Starting from ideological currents of the seventieth century in France (“la préciosité, le libertinage”) and the configuration of the classic aesthetics by Boileau and Malherbe, we attempt the profiling of values and archetypes in theatrical classic texts. Through representative passages, we raise the ideal of the « honnête homme», the virtuous and sociable person, who lives in the ambient atmosphere of Descartes’s and Pascal’s philosophical ideas.

We present the two greatest tragedians of the seventeenth century, Corneille which emphasizes on human will and strength (we analyze Corneille’s ideals such as generosity), but also Racine, the great painter of human passions. During the second part of the course, students have the opportunity to study Racine’s Phaedra, a representative play of this period. We also study Moliere’s comedy which cauterizes human vices and constitutes a kind of mirror of his era. Passages from Moliere’s play Dom Juan are also examined during this course.

Society and Politics in France from Enlightenment to Revolution (641012) - 6 ECTSL. Efthymiou

This module aims to introduce students to the political, social and cultural history of eighteenth century France (Enlightenment, French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Period) and to familiarize them with the basic concepts of historical studies (time, space, structures, sources etc.).

Syntax of the French language (641067) – 5 ECTSR. Delveroudi

This course is dealing with the syntactic analysis of the French sentence. The examined topics include the differences between traditional grammar and contemporary linguistic analysis, as well as between notional and formal grammar, the notion of inner grammar and the distinction between langue/parole – competence/performance. On the basis of the notional and methodological tools of structuralism and generative grammar students become acquainted with the analysis in immediate constituents of French sentences, the recognition of the groups encountered in a sentence, the relations between them and the recognition of grammatical categories. The notion of structural ambiguity as well as the analysis of complex and passive sentences are also among the topics examined in the frame of this course.Language: French 3 hours weekly assessment: Final oral exame-class available

The humanistic movement of the French Enlightenment (641037) – 6 ECTSE. Tatsopoulou

This course aims at presenting the humanistic movement of the French Enlightenment and focuses on the main philosophers, from the precursors Bayle and Fontenelle to the preromantic Rousseau, bringing out the major role of the Encyclopedia. Selected extracts of representative philosophers’ works will be examined.

Aspects of contemporary French cultural life (641035) – 5 ECTSIr. Apostolou

The course deals with the culture of French society. After an introduction to the cultural studies and cultural history, we will study the characteristics of the dominant French culture as well as the phenomenon of the counter-culture. Furthermore, based on the theories of Bourdieu, Foucault, Ory, Rioux, Sirinelli, the course will analyze the different aspects of elite’s culture and popular culture. Moreover we shall examine the rise of mass culture (after May ‘68), youth culture and the culture of the marginalized members of French society. We will also study French cultural policy (Malraux, Lang). Through examples of the French cultural production (music, cinema, theater, opera, festivals, mode, gastronomy, art, game shows, reality TV show), we will develop students’ understanding of contemporary French culture.

Spoken discourse III: oral presentation (6410129) – 4 ECTSK. Forakis

This course aims to refine productive skills in oral. With one or more authentic written documents which can optionally be used as sources of inspiration and information, the student learns how to give a structured presentation on a topic of general interest and specific issues, followed by a brief conversation aiming at clearing up number of the discussed points.

French culture and civilization of the 19th century(641031)– 6 ECTSD. Provata

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the French civilization of the 19th century. During the period from the fall of Napoleon to the Great War, France was experiencing important evolutions and innovations which lead the country towards modernity. The course will examine the political and social transformations as well as the different political regimes that have followed one another (constitutional monarchy, Second Republic, Second Empire and the beginning of the Third Republic). We will also examine aspects of everyday life and the material civilization, the movements of ideas and the artistic movements.

This course deals with French literature during the 19th century. It examines texts of various literary genres (poetry, prose, plays), indicative of the artistic movements of their era.

The object of this course is the morphological analysis of the French word. The course deals with the fundamental linguistic notions relevant to the level of morphology, such as linguistic sign, distribution, paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations, distinction between diachrony and synchrony. Other topics that are dealt with are: the term ‘word’ and the difficulties to define it and the differences between a common dictionary and a linguistic lexicon. The students through this course become acquainted with particular notions and problems of morphological analysis: morphemes, allomorphs, affixes, stems, roots, mots populaires et mots savants, morphological rules, productivity, etc. Through concrete examples they become familiar with the process of morphological segmentation and the mechanisms of derivation and composition.Language: French3 hours weeklyAssessment: Final oral exame-class available

French Phonetics: Theoretical approaches and applications (6410111) – 6 ECTSM. Pateli

Τhe course consists of diagnosing and correcting pronunciation errors of sounds, accents, rhythms and intonation at both levels of spoken language, perception and reproduction/production. Special emphasis is placed on characteristic vocal phenomena of the French phonological system which do not exist in Greek language.

French Grammar (641020) – 5 ECTSAr. Moustaki

The objective of this course is the study of complex sentences: coordinated sentences and subordinate sentences. The study of explicit but also implicit subordination. The classification of subordinate sentences adopts the terminology of traditional grammar. The approach is based on a corpus proposed in the grammar of Riegel et al., as well as on written extracts of various textual genres.

Contrastive Syntax Greek-French and Translation (641061) – 6 ECTSM. Pantazara

The objective of the course is to study fundamental grammatical and syntactic phenomena in both source and target language, from the foreign language perspective, in order to observe and analyze differences in translation when comparing source and target texts; also, to familiarize students with the basic translation strategies and assist them in mastering

This course explores major political, social, economic and cultural events of France in the 20th century. It aims to offer an overall review of the evolution of French society during this century, stressing the importance of changes and continuities in time. The course is taught in French.

From the avant-garde to postmodernism (novel-poetry) (641028) – 5 ECTSE. Tatsopoulou

This course aims at presenting the most important movements in the 20thcentury French literature in diachronic succession and in relation to their historical and cultural parameters. It focuses on the main French novelists and poets from the avant-garde to postmodernism. Selected extracts of representative works will be examined. The course also intends to develop the students’ capacity for critical analysis and literary commentary.

Applied Linguistics and Language Teaching (641063) – 7 ECTSAr. Proscolli

This course examines linguistic theories and models that have been applied in language teaching and the possibilities for exploitation of research and studies results in Linguistics (Pragmatic, Psycholinguistic, Sociolinguistic, Cognitive Linguistics, Acquisition of Second/Foreign Language) and in cognitive sciences(Behaviorism, Cognitive and Social Constructivism, etc.), which are a point of reference to language didactics.

Contemporary French Literature and Translation (641097) – 5 ECTSM. Papadima

Starting right after the post-war period, the students get acquainted with texts that represent of the literary movements and the most important French authors of the second half of the 20th century, such as Simone de Beauvoir, Boris Vian, Françoise Sagan, Marguerite Duras, Claude Simon, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Michel Tournier, Annie Ernaux, Daniel Pennac, Michel Houellebecq, Anne Gavalda, Jean Claude-Izzo, Pierre Lemaître. The reception of these works in the Greek literary system and their translations are also studied. At the same time, representative extracts from their work are translated in class.

Specialized Translation (641095) – 5 ECTSM. Pantazara

The objective of the course is to introduce students to specialised translation issues and familiarise them with the language and terminology of various domains. The course focuses on specialized communication features, and also on general principles of terminology, along with the specialised translator's methodology, as regards terminology identification and translation equivalents, terminological resources and documentation.

Translation: Theory and Practice (641075) – 5 ECTSE. Tziafa

a. Theory: A Review of translation theories. Presentation of main translation theories and of the relevant terminology. Analytical approach of the translation process.b. Practice: Translation of texts from various genres (written or oral discourse) from French to Greek, translation strategies, development of professional translation skills.The course’s objective is the connection of theory and practice, taking into account that the elements that form a translation theory are derived from translation practice, while, at the same time, a firm theoretical background is necessary for a well-rounded translation practice. Another objective is to introduce students to fundamental translation theories and to connect them with the current translation skills and practices, which are strongly connected to labor market.

New novelistic and poetic forms in the 20th and 21st centuries (641093) – 5 ECTSE. Tatsopoulou

This course aims at presenting innovative novelistic and poetic forms in the French and Francophone literature of the 20th and 21st centuries, bringing out the new narrative techniques or poetical creative processes. Selected extracts of representative works will be examined as well as the full-text of 14, the novel by Jean Echenoz. The course also intends to develop the students’ capacity for critical analysis and literary commentary.

History of the French Revolution (641071) - 5 ECTSN. Manitakis

This course offers an in-depth analysis of the period of the French Revolution 1789-1799. It focuses on various themes such as the causes, outcomes and phases of the revolutionary movement, the revolutionary violence, memory and historiography as well as “radical” and “conservative” reviews. The course is taught in French.

Corrective Phonetics using ICTs (6410149) – 5 ECTSM. Pateli

The course aims mainly at improving/correcting the perceptive and productive skills of the students in an effort to develop their phonological competence. Students learn through acoustic exercises to recognize, distinguish and correct sounds, rhythms and the intonation of the French phonological system.

The aesthetics of modern and metamodern theater of the 20th century (641091) – 5 ECTSAdjunct lecturer

This course studies literary movements concerning the theater from the beginning of the twentieth century until nowadays. It starts with a review of the nineteenth century (romanticism, realism and naturalism) to study then “The Free theater” of André Antoine, Jarry, the Cartel, Dadaism and surrealism in theater, traditional theater (Anouilh, Giraudoux), the theater of Cruelty by Antonin Artaud, plays of Claudel, Montherlant and Mauriac and existentialism in theater (Camus, Sartre). We examine afterwards the theater after 1945 (Arrabal, Genet) and the Theater of the absurd (Ionesco, Beckett). During the last part of our course, we study contemporary theater (from 1968 until nowadays) focusing especially on Bernard-Marie Koltès. Characteristic passages are proposed to the students for each of these courses.

Comparative Literature (6410104) – 5 ECTSD. Roboly

The aim of this course is the definition of the various aspects of passion and, more specifically, passion for the game. Focusing on three major texts of European literature (Balzac, The Magic Skin – Dostoevsky, The Gambler – Zweig, The Royal Game), this course investigates the ways which of each writer deals with this subject.

The parameters of foreign language teaching (641080) – 7 ECTSM. Vihou

The course examines the parameters that define the teaching/learning of a foreign language and determine the effectiveness of the teaching process. These parameters are related to the most recent learning theories and are considered in the context of modern pedagogy, such as student-centered teaching, differentiated pedagogy, task-based learning, etc.

Through the study of concepts such as learning needs and motivation, objectives and contents of the course, teaching practices and methods, teaching materials, evaluation, etc., students - as future teachers of French - come in contact with the complexity of teaching language and the interaction relationships of the different educational environment parameters

History of the French language (641032) – 5 ECTSK. Forakis

Serving as an introduction to diachronic linguistics, this course aims at reviewing the historical periods of the French language: old and middle French; French of the Renaissance; classical French; modern and contemporary French. The attention is drawn to textual samples just as representative of the period studied as likely to illustrate the main aspects of the phonetic, morphosyntactic and lexical evolution of the language system.

Inverse Translation from Greek into French (641068) – 5 ECTSM. Pantazara

The objective of the course is to assist students in developing linguistic skills in the foreign language as target language through written mediation activities; also, in producing both grammatically and expressively correct texts from Greek into French and in developing translation strategies to render specific cultural elements of the Greek culture.

Translation Tools (641060) – 5 ECTSE. Tziafa

The subject of this course is the introduction to modern computational tools, assisting the translation procedure. The course’s objective is to help students develop skills, such as use of electronic dictionaries and term-bases, text corpora and linguistic tools, to familiarize themselves with conducting online search, to learn about translation memory systems (including creating, importing and exporting translation memories, aligning documents and creating a translation memory by using the aligned documents) and machine translation. Students are required to attend all sessions, as it is a workshop course. Finally, the purpose of the course is to improve students’ technological skills, as regards translation and modern practice, directly connected to the labor market.

The Poetry of Parnassianism and Symbolism. Literary Production of Realism and Naturalism (641070) – 5 ECTSIo.Papaspyridou

This course has the aim of studying the evolution of poetry and fiction during the second part of the nineteenth century in France. Starting from the current of Parnassianism, we try to examine how writing poetry changes through time and how poetic form become more and more important despite of the words’ sense. The end of the romantic current is examined through the work of eminent poets who changed artistic creation such as Gautier and Baudelaire, but also the so called cursed poets Verlaine and Rimbaud. Evolution in fiction is studied with Flaubert’s works (the main author of the Realism’s current), Zola, the father of the Naturalism and Maupassant, a great novelist of the century influenced by both Realism and Naturalism. We complete this spiritual travel with the current of Symbolism and his main representative StéphaneMallarmé, the creator of undecipherable poetry which prepares the field for new experimentations and the birth of modern poetry.

French works of Arabic literature and intercultural study of their reception in the Arab and French world. Debate between the reader, the text, its author and the society of origin and reception. The student is invited to evaluate the coexistence, relationship, strength of literary works that offer much in both the French and the Arab world. It should be noted that francophony in the Arab world is indeed something unique, which must be emphasized and properly evaluated in French studies.

This introductory course to francophone literature emphasizes on the literary production in French of the Maghreb countries following the Second World War. We analyze the social, cultural and historical context in which the French language was chosen in order to picture the Arabic and the Berber identity, particularly in the aftermath of Independence. We examine a diverse range of representative texts by novelists such as Jean Amrouche, Mohammed Dib, KatebYacine, Rachid Boudjedra, Assia Djebar, Albert Memmiand Driss Chraïbi. The following novel is analyzed in detail: L’enfant de sable (1985), Tahar Ben Jelloun.

Literary texts of the 18th century (641073) – 5 ECTSK. StefanakiThis course examines the 18th century comedy in France. Emphasis is placed on the contribution of the Commedia dell’Arte to the French plays and the role of the Comédie-Italienne. We focus on the verbal and the non-verbal sources of humor, the characters, and the themes of the disguise, as well as the relationship between servants and masters. The followingplays are analyzed in detail : Le Jeu de l’amour et du hasard (1730), Pierre Marivaux;Le Barbier de Séville(1773), Pierre Beaumarchais.

This module explores the way the meanings of masculinity and femininity have changed over time. In this course we focus on gendered social, political, and cultural transformation of France from Enlightenment to the present.

Art and Society (641072) – 5 ECTSIr. Apostolou

This course gives an overview of the French painting from the neoclassicism to surrealism. Though the study of various masterpieces of French painting, we will study the various movements of the 19th century (Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Barbizon School, Realism, Impressionism, Neo-impressionism Post-impressionism) and of the first half of the 20th century (Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism, Dada, Surrealism). The course will also treat theoretical questions and will analyze the creative techniques of major French painters (David, Ingres, Millet, Courbet, Manet, Monet, Degas, Renoir, Seurat, Signac, Matisse, Derain, Picasso, Braque).We will also explain the artistic and historical context in which French paintings representing modern life were created.

Sociolinguistics (10163) - 5 ECTS Adjunct lecturer

The course provides an introduction to sociolinguistics that can be briefly defined as the study of language in its social context. Beginning from the foundation of sociolinguistics as a field, the course gives an overview of the research conducted in France. Overall, its main analytical focus is synchronic variation in French. A special attention is given to examples of variation in French phonology, morphology and syntax and some references are made to variation in lexicon and discourse features. The individual units of the course cover: variationist sociolinguistics, language variation and social networks, phonological and grammatical variation in contemporary French, language contact and societal multilingualism, language attitudes and standards, diglossia and sociolinguistic inequality. The course is of special interest to future teachers of French as a second or foreign language, working with students from linguistically, socially and ethnically diverse backgrounds.

History, politics and literature in the 19th century (641074) – 5 ECTS D. Provata

This course proposes to study how politics, history and literature meet in the work of some writers and thinkers of the nineteenth century who, thanks to their active participation in French political life, contributed effectively to the formation of the dominant ideology of their time. The focus will be on the role of politics in literary works, the political and social issues which concerned the writers, the role of the press in the literature-politics relationship, and the writer's place in the political reality of his time. Within the frame of the course, the texts which will be examined are by Victor Hugo, Lamartine, Chateaubriand, Madame de Stael, Benjamin Constant, George Sand, Eugene Sue, Balzac, Zola and others.

History of Education in France and of Teaching the French Language in Greece (641098) – 5 ECTSD. Provata

In this course, which will be of particular interest to those who are preparing for a career in education, we will discuss some fundamental themes in the history of education in France, as well as, the history of French language teaching in Greece. After briefly discussing the school organization under the Ancien Régime, we will discuss the different stages taken in order to enable the creation and development of a system of public education in France and subsequently, a teaching body. The role of education during times of social transformation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries will also be examined. With regard to the history of French language teaching in Greece, we will study the factors that allowed the diffusion of the French language in the country (school and cultural institutions, learning manuals), as well as the role of teachers as cultural mediators. Students will be introduced to the history of intercultural relations between France and Greece.

The aim of this course is to develop the student's ability to put to use his/her theoretical knowledge in Foreign Language Pedagogy and Didactics so as to better organize the language's teaching. The ultimate goal is to provide future teachers will all the necessary tools for planning effectively their teaching paths in order to support their pupils in the acquisition of linguistic elements and socio-cultural phenomena in the studied language and to select teaching/learning contents and methodological approaches suitable to the target audience by taking into account their age and level of language proficiency as well as the specific learning environment(s).

History of the French Colonization (641089) – 5 ECTSAdjunct lecturer

The course presents different aspects of the colonial politics of the Second French colonial Empire (1830-1946). The aim of the course is to contextualize the French colonization within the international framework, through the exploration of certain crucial moments in colonial imperialism, e.g. the case of the partition of Africa in 1884. The course also explores and highlights certain patterns of the examined period: the formation of the notion of the nation, that of the Empire, the notion of imperialism, the affiliations of political ideologies with colonialism, orientalism, the resistance of the colonized and their right to violence, the subtle relations between the Metropole and the colonies, the gaze of the other.

The documentation presented and discussed in class draws on a selective bibliography and is reinforced by the meticulous analysis of different sources and authentic documents that students critically examine. Schoolbooks of the Victorian era, the Italian opera, the international and universal Exhibitions, French posters and the cinema simultaneously constitute facades and hegemonic cultural representations that allow us to approach and critically explore the history of the French colonization.

Given the importance of ICTs in education, we propose to train students/future teachers in using ICTs and exploring the latter’s full potential in foreign language teaching and learning.More specifically, students are trained to: - search, find and bookmark websites, Internet services, and tools referring to multimedia resources, digital data, and materials (authentic as well as created) that can be used in the foreign language classroom; - use software (such as Microsoft Office, Hot Potatoes, Netquiz, and others) as well as web-based programs to create digitized multimedia interactive learning material for teaching/learning purposes;- fully explore 2.0collaborative tools capabilities, which contribute to a socio-cognitive and collaborative/cooperative-based approach to learning.

The primary purpose of language teaching and learning is to communicate. In order for the learner to communicate with members of a group who do not master his or her mother tongue, he or she will must, in addition to knowledge of the foreign language, be able to recognize and perceive the filing systems that manage this social group. More specifically, the course examines: - the main key concepts of intercultural education (civilization, culture, multiculturalism, stereotypes, identity and alterity, intercultural awareness, etc.);- the place of the concepts of civilization and culture in the different methods and approaches to teaching and learning French as a Foreign Language; - how to design classroom activities that will develop intercultural awareness and intercultural communication skills.

Idiomatic expressions to teach French and to translate (641025) – 4 ECTSAr. Moustaki

In this module, we study the phenomenon of idioms/frozen expressions, a phenomenon that characterizes all natural languages, using the lexico-grammar theory (Gross 1975) that describes natural languages and aims at their automatic translation. As part of this course, we have adapted this theoretical model to the teaching-learning of French as foreign language and to translation.

The parameters that must be taken into account for the translation of idiomatic expressions from French into Greek are noted, more precisely, the meaning of an imaged expression, the image/metaphor, its connotation, the level of language, its frequency, the cultural elements conveyed, and finally, its functioning in a precise context.

We then learn how to locate pictorial expressions in literary extracts but also in the French press and we familiarize ourselves with tools that help to store and process them, such as scoop.it and google.doc.

Finally, we focus on the syntactic structure of fixed expressions in order to reveal their morphosyntactic "regularity".

French verb syntax (6410167) – 4 ECTSAr. Moustaki

In this lesson, semantic, editorial, lexical and stylistic information is initially identified as given in the lexicon entries (such as the Florea& Fuchs Verbs Dictionary, 2010), with a teaching orientation and a suggested non-authentic context.

We then concentrate on the Greek rendering of the recorded uses of a verb as contained in an electronic dictionary (especially the LADL dictionary) and designed to support the description of French and automatic translation. The term in a dictionary of this kind is not a verb but a simple proposition (e.g. a sentence including the verb and its immediate components without other peripheric elements). The context here is not authentic.

Finally, based on an original text or body of texts (extract from French literature or an extract from an electronic newspaper), only one of the possible and recorded uses of a verb is found. For this use, semantic, editorial, lexical, and textual information (language level) is given to the classroom to compile a lexicon as the one that our students have already consulted in the dictionary.

Introduction to the basic concepts of teaching French as a foreign language (641059) – 5 ECTSM. Vihou

The main concepts of teaching French Language as a foreign language are explored through the observation of videotaped courses and the analysis of study programs, manuals, etc. The proposed material helps students to approach critical concepts related to teaching foreign language. Students are assessed on the basis of the work proposed during the semester (40%) and the final oral presentation (60%).

Writing methods of an academic assessment (6410150) – 4 ECTSM. Vihou

The course aims at the introduction to the rules of writing an academic assessment. As a tool for studying, deepening and evaluating, the academic assessment is not just a simple presentation of ideas but follows special rules of writing and methodology on its structure, content and form. This is a different written language, the use of which presupposes the development of a structured way of working and thinking. Τhe main axes of the course are: (i) the formulation of a specific question, (ii) the attempt to systematically analyze and study it through the use of bibliographic sources, and (iii) the formulation of documented arguments. Students are evaluated on the basis of their participation and performance during the course throughout the semester, and by final written examination.

Error analysis (641090) – 4 ECTSK. Forakis

After a concise presentation of the theoretical framework and research tools specific to the notion of linguistic error, this course aims to expose students to techniques of identifying and examining deviations in productions of French language users, native or not. In the case of the non-native users of French, attention is particularly drawn to deviations that may bear the imprint of the L1. Linguistic rather than didactic oriented, the approach is sensitive to the main components of the language sciences: phonetics-phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics.

Critical Analysis of Literary Translation and Theoretical Approaches (641099) – 5 ECTSM. Papadima

The subject of this course is French authors and their most translated work in Greek, such as Saint-Exupéry’s Little Prince, for which there are 22 translations in Greek.

Through the comparison of the various translation of the same work – poetry, theater, novel – the translation strategies applied are studied and analyzed, according to contemporary translation approaches.

Literary Translation Workshop (6410108) – 4 ECTSM. Papadima

This is an introduction to the literary translator's profession. All the stages of the translating and editorial activity, the working conditions and assumptions of a literary translator, the tools and rules of the profession are presented. The class puts together a collective translation project.

The Question of Theory: Language, Literature, Translation (641040) – 4 ECTSG. Varsos

This elective course is mainly addressed to 8th semester students interested in studying, commenting and discussing questions of literary theory. The course is taught in Greek and is also open to students outside the Department of French Language and Literature. It aims at introducing students to a number of selected theoretical texts from Greek Antiquity to the present. Emphasis is placed on how the language of literature affects translation processes and how literary translation involves relations between literature and history.

Poetics and Translation (641050) – 4 ECTSG. Varsos

This elective course is addressed to students of the 5th and 7th semesters with relatively advanced linguistic skills (prerequisite: 641092). The first part pf the course deals with basic

questions of poetic from and structure and examines their pertinence with respect to the reading of a poem and to its translation. A number of methodological and theoretical implications are thus brought to the fore. The second part of the course involves the study of specific poems and the comparative analysis of selected older and more recent translations in Greek. Emphasis is on French 19th century poetry involving traditional versification techniques, including rime and meter. For the past few years, Baudelaire’s Fleurs du Mal has constituted a basic part of our corpus.

Literary Style and Translation (641066) – 4 ECTSG. Varsos

This elective/compulsory course is addressed to 6th and 8th semester students with relatively advanced linguistic skills who have already completed 641092. It mediates between introductory translation courses and seminars of advanced literary translation practice. Its main objective is to systematically identify and study basic problems concerning the translation of literary texts, especially problems involving the identification and transposition of their stylistic characteristics. After an introductory survey of basic issues of French and Greek stylistics and rhetoric, the course focuses on selected literary texts. Emphasis is placed on various moments and trends within the tradition of the French prose poem since the second half of the 19th century. Students are invited to compare already published translations with their own translations and to explain the role of translation choices with respect to stylistic and rhetorical devices. The course thus combines literary criticism with translation skills.

Translating theoretical and philosophical essays (641042) – 4 ECTSG. Varsos

This elective course is addressed to students of the 5th and 7th semesters with relatively advanced linguistic skills (prerequisite: 641092). Objectives: a) to familiarize the student with the essay as a discursive genre within the setting of French and Greek literatures b) to develop the students’ capacity to read, appreciate and translate essays pertaining to theoretical issues, especially those regarding the cultural and political role of literature. Students study and translate selected texts depending on their specific skills and interests.

Discourse Analysis and Production in Greek Language (641094) – 4 ECTSM. Pantazara

The objective of the course is to assist students in writing in target language by improving their proficiency in Greek language, in order to convey ideas and information clearly and correctly in translation. Another objective is to motivate them to study various levels of linguistic description and analysis (vocabulary, morphology, syntax, semantics), work with standards of textuality, registers, text types and genres, and also review translated texts and master the specific issue of proper nouns in all their variety.

The subject of this course is the subtitling of audiovisual material (videos of TED Talks, movies, TV series, YouTube videos, news, documentaries, animation, etc.), and also localization of video games, subtitling for the deaf and hard-of-hearing (SDH), and audiovisual description for blind and visually impaired consumers of visual media. The courses objective is to introduce students to the use of relevant software and tools, and the development of translation skills, such as condensation, synchronization, etc.

In the context of historical, humanistic and sociological knowledge, it is necessary to reflect upon and distinguish between the ever-growing civilization and humanity, and the religious thought, which refers to the Eternal and its interpretation.

The course deals with the phenomenon of acculturation between the French and Arab worlds in the fields of literature and culture. Its aim is to highlight the interactions between France and the Arab world in the field of culture (in general) and literature (in particular), so that the student can focus on the peaceful expansion of the coexistence of the two worlds in Europe and the Mediterranean.

History of the training of French teachers in Greece- 19th-20th centuries. Comparative approaches (6410124) - 4 ECTSL. Efthymiou

This module explores the history of the cultural policies of Great Powers in the field of the initial training of the Greek Teachers of foreign languages since the ninetieth century. It aims to provide students with a critical understanding of various projects, creations and reforms related to the organization of an initial training and the development of the cultural curricula. In this course we focus on the case of the initial training of the Greek Teachers of French.

The rediscovery of the Orient: French Travelers in the Orient (15th-20th century) (641052) – 4 ECTSIr. Apostolou

French traveler’s narratives in the Mediterranean East are linked to French diplomatic, commercial and cultural relations with the Ottoman Empire and Modern Greece. The course will discuss a selection of texts of French travelers (Bélon, Spon, Tournefort, Choiseul-Gouffier, Volney, Chateaubriand, Lamartine, Nerval, Gautier). It will focus on their impressions and descriptions in the context of the diplomatic, political and scientific presence of France in the Levant. Its iconography will be also explored. The course will also discuss Bonaparte's campaign in Egypt and the archaeological activities of the members of the French School in Greece. Moreover, we will study the presence of Greece in the magazine Le Tour du monde (1860-1914) and in its supplement A travers le Monde. These narratives will be studied by various lenses (political, historical, postcolonial, aesthetic). Students will be equipped with a critical framework (narrative theory, postcolonial theory) in order to examine questions of identity and otherness, race and gender.

This course has a twofold purpose. First, to present students a general overview of French literature, from Middle Age to our days. Second, to familiarize students with the elements of different literary genres (poetry, prose, plays).

Intercultural Translation (641076) – 4 ECTS Adjunct lecturer

This course focuses on intercultural translation between the Greek speaking and the French speaking world. It enables students to use tools from both Cultural and Translation Studies in order to interpret multiple facets of intercultural translation. It uses the gesture of translation under the junta in Greece as a case-study, with an emphasis to texts translated from French into Greek.
