On Which Side of the Door?¿En Que Lado de La Puerta?Dear People and Friends of San Juan Bautista,

We continue to sit in theSchool of Jesus, as we listen toanother lesson about discipleshipfrom Luke’s Gospel today. Inresponse to the question whethermany or few will be saved, the LordJesus responded:

“Strive to enter through the narrowgate, for many, I tell you, will attemptto enter but will not be strongenough. After the master of the househas arisen and locked the door, thenwill you stand outside knocking andsaying, ‘Lord, open the door for us.’He will say to you in reply, ‘I do notknow where you are from’.” (Luke13:24-25)

The Lord’s response indicatesthat the path of discipleship is noteasy nor without effort. He furtherexplains that just being around himis not enough; we must make thechoice to embrace the Gospel, mustallow the Good News to transform

us, and then must respond whole-heartedly to it.

The narrow door represents the challenges of Christiandiscipleship and of putting into practice the LORD’s teaching.Recall that two weeks ago Jesus challenged his followers tostore up treasure in the Kingdom, not on earth. Last Sunday heexpressed his desire to light a FIRE on the earth. Although welive in the world, the LORD wants us to understand that wehave been created and redeemed for a life that is eternal, a lifethat revolves around our relationship with the Father, with theSon and with the Holy Spirit.

When we are on fire with love for God and first seek hisKingdom, then we are entering through that narrow door andend up on the inside. In this choice to be Intentional Disciples,we place our trust in Him, not ourselves; we allow God’s loveto be our strength Consequently, we find ourselves strongenough to enter in. When we cling to other priorities—otherpeople, material things, popularity, selfishness, disobedience—then the door is too narrow for us, laden down by theseother concerns. We find that we are NOT strong enough, forwe are relying on ourselves, not on God.

Putting into practice Christ’s teachings is the way toensure we are on the right side of the door. Week by week weunderstand the LORD’s mercy and love for us more deeply,we learn a little bit more about true discipleship, we arestrengthened by God’s grace in the sacraments, especially theEucharist, and we are encouraged by God’s people who arestriving also to enter through the narrow door. May our lovefor God motivate us to enter through that narrow door.

Mientras seguimos sentados en la Escuelade Jesús, hoy escuchamos otra lección sobre eldiscipulado del Evangelio de Lucas. Enrespuesta a la pregunta si muchos o pocos seránsalvados, el Señor Jesús respondió:

"Esfuércense a entrar por la puerta, que esangosta, pues yo les aseguro que muchostratarán de entrar y no podrán. Cuando eldueño de la casa se levante de la mesa y cierrela puerta, ustedes se quedarán afuera y sepondrán a tocar la puerta diciendo: ´¡Señor,ábrenos!´ Pero él les responderá: ´No séquiénes son ustedes´. " (Lucas 13: 24-25)

La respuesta del Señor indica que elcamino del discipulado no es fácil ni sinesfuerzo. Explica, además, que no bastasolamente con estar a su alrededor; sino quedebemos dejar que la Buena Nueva nostransforme y así responderle con todo elcorazón.

La puerta estrecha representa los retos deldiscipulado Cristiano y de poner en práctica laenseñanza del Señor. Recuerda dos semanaspasado Jesús retó a sus seguidores a acumulartesoros en el Reino, no en la tierra. El domingo pasado,expresó su deseo de encender un fuego sobre la tierra. Aunquevivimos en el mundo, el Señor quiere que entendamos quehemos sido creados y redimidos por una vida que es eterna,una vida que gira en torno a nuestra relación con el Padre, conel Hijo y con el Espíritu Santo.

Cuando estamos encendidos por el amor de Dios yprimero buscamos su Reino, entonces estamos entrando poresa puerta estrecha y terminaremos en el interior. En estadecisión de ser Discípulos Intencionales, confiamos en Él, noen nosotros mismos; permitimos que el amor de Dios seanuestra fortaleza, por consiguiente, nos encontramos losuficientemente fuertes como para entrar. Cuando nosaferramos a otras prioridades—otras personas, cosasmateriales, la popularidad, el egoísmo, y la desobediencia—entonces la puerta es demasiado estrecha para nosotros,cargado por estos otros problemas. Nos damos cuenta que NOsomos lo suficientemente fuertes ,porque estamosapoyándonos en nosotros mismos, no en Dios

Poniendo en práctica las enseñanzas de Cristo es lamanera de garantizar que estamos en el lado derecho de lapuerta. Semana tras semana entendemos mejor la misericordiay el amor que el Señor tienes para nosotros , aprendemos unpoco más sobre discipulado verdadero, somos fortalecidos porla gracia de Dios en los sacramentos, especialmente laEucaristía, y nos sentimos alentados por el pueblo de Diosque se esfuerzan también para entrar por la puerta estrecha.Que nuestro amor a Dios nos motive a entrar por esa puertaestrecha.
