EMU PARK STATE SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Newsletter No: 4 in 2019 Web Site: www.emuparkss.eq.edu.au Phone: 07-49254333 Fax: 07-49254300 A MESSAGE FROM OUR DEPUTY PRINCIPAL: This week has been a hive of activity here at Emu Park State School. Monday and Tuesday saw our annual School Photos being taken. Our Swimming Carnivals followed these on Wednesday and Thursday. Two amazing days with many of our students showing resilience, positivity and happiness. I was extremely proud of all our stu- dents determination and behaviour. A special thanks to Mrs Karner for all of her organisation to ensure the smooth running of the events. Our teacher aides as usual went over and above during these two days playing a major role in smooth and safe running of the carnivals. Thanks to Sarah our referee and to all the teachers for their energetic approach to the days. It was great to see the large number of parents and carers who were there to cheer on the students and share in the results of hard work and for some courage. We all enjoyed a short movie on assembly this morning showing many of the last two days highlights. Next week we welcome Liz, Harold and the Life Education van. This year our visit is fully sponsored by The Smith Family, Communities for Children. This enables every student at Emu Park State School to attend these ses- sions. We all want our kids living to their full potential and believe that all children deserve to lead safe and healthy lives. This is why we are being supported by Life Education. By placing preventive education at the core of their work, Life Education instils in children the confidence to make safer and healthier choices now and in the future. We will be ending Term 1 with an explosion of colour and fun with our Colour Fun Run! All families should have received an email with details for the fun run. I have mentioned a couple of points below but I urge all parents and carers to read the email carefully so you are fully aware of the event and all of the details. The School Run4Fun Colour Explosion will be held on Friday 5 th April 2019 (last day of Term 1) starting at 1:30pm. School uniform must be worn on the day however we do ask that you bring a spare change of clothes to school, most importantly a plain white shirt to change into for the event as the students will be covered in powder from head to toe. The day’s focus is on fun and fitness with the added benefit of raising funds for our school. Colour Powder: The colour powder used in our event has been sourced direct from India, the home of Holi Powder. It is made of high quality corn starch and permitted food colours. It’s non-toxic, biodegradable, skin safe and environmentally friendly. Toxicological Risk Assessment and ingredient listings can be obtained from the School Office upon request. Students with asthma are advised to be careful in their decision to participate. A thought for all parents and carers from well known children’s author Mem Fox School Camps: Year 4, 5 and 6 teachers are beginning early preparations for camps. Year 4 will be attending North Keppel Island Environmental Centre in Term 4. Year 5 will be heading off to Boyne Island at the end of Term 2. Year 6 students will travel to Kinchant Dam in Term 4. While we do not have final costings for the camps yet each of them may cost approximately between $220 -$260 per student. Year 5 parents will be notified of the final cost early next term. “If every parent understood the huge educational benefits and intense happiness brought about by read- ing aloud to their children, and if every parent and every adult caring for a child read aloud three stories a day to the children in their lives, we would probably wipe out illiteracy in one generation.” Mem Fox Ellen - IMPORTANT DATES - Mon 25 March - Fri 5 April: Life Education Van at EPSS Tuesday 26 March: P & C Annual General Meeting 1:45pm in Staff Room. A MESSAGE FROOM OUR HEAD OF LEAP: Prep Vision Screening: Emu Park State School is delighted to inform you that Children’s Health Queens-land is running a free vision screening program for all Prep students. They will be visiting our school on Wednes-day the 27th of March. A white envelope went home to all Prep parents a few weeks ago and many have been re-turned. If you have not yet returned your child’s consent form, please do so as soon as possible. Good vision is vital for learning, physical and social development, so we strongly encourage all members of the family to have regular vision checks. If vision issues are detected early, our young people have better learning outcomes. ‘The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.’ Have a great week. Tiffany A MESSAGE FROM OUR PE TEACHER: Our Junior and Senior Swimming Carnivals were held this week. The overall winning house this year at the Senior Swimming Carnival was Wooree. Congratulations! I would also like to mention how proud I was of every single stu-dent, from both the Junior and Senior Carnival, for their awesome behaviour. I saw many happy, resilient and posi-tive students throughout the day who put in amazing effort and had heaps of fun. Well done! Below are the Age Champions & Runners-Up for the Senior Carnival.

I would also like to congratulate the following for breaking some of the swimming records at the Senior Carnival. Caden broke 12yrs Boys Freestyle, Backstroke, Butterfly and Breaststroke records. Cooper broke 11yrs Boys Freestyle, Backstroke and Butterfly records. Amber broke 8yrs Girls Freestyle, Backstroke and Butterfly records. Sonny broke the 8yrs Boys Butterfly record. What a great achievement! Our school Cross Country trial was held last Friday. Twenty-one students have been invited to attend the KCD tri-als in Week 9 on Friday 29th March at the Barmaryee Sports Complex. Congratulations to the students below.

The School Run4Fun Colour Explosion is fast approaching! The event is on the last day of school this term, Friday 5th April and will start at 1:30pm on the school oval. Don’t forget to wear your school uniform to school but also bring a white t-shirt and some spare shorts that you don’t mind being covered in vibrant, non-toxic colour powder. If you want more information on the colour powder we will use at the event, please request the Test Report at the School Office. The powder we will use is sourced from India, the home of Holi Powder. It’s non-toxic, environmen-tally friendly, biodegradable and skin safe. We encourage you to continue raising funds for our school. Jump online to www.myprofilepage.com.au and share your Profile Page using the share buttons or continue getting cash donations using your sponsorship forms. Looking forward to seeing you all there! Below is an outline of ‘Strength Based’ Pastoral Care.

What you see is what you get………….. Main Beliefs of the “Strengths” Approach: • All people have strengths and capacities • People can change given the right conditions and resources • People change and grow through their strengths and capacities • People are the experts on their own situation • The problem is the problem: the person is not the problem • Problems often blind people from noticing and appreciating their strengths • People have good intentions and are doing the best they can • Behaviour makes perfect sense (to them, and to us if we think about it) • The power for change is within each of us The Stages of the “Strengths” Approach: • Listening to people’s stories, exploring the context and the meaning they give their experience, and identifying

the core issues. • Developing a picture of the future and setting goals through an explanation of people’s aspirations. • Identifying and highlighting strengths and exceptions to problems. • Identifying additional resources that complement people strengths and goals. • Mobilising strengths and resources through a plan of action. • Reviewing and evaluating progress and change. Students can access the Chaplaincy Service through the school office on 4925 4320. Chappy Cherril

Only two weeks to go until the students have the time of their life with the School Run4Fun Colour Explosion. How are you tracking towards your fundraising goal? Hopefully students have been rais-ing funds using their Sponsorship Form together with online fundraising through the www.myprofilepage.com.au. Don’t forget, the more sponsorship donations you receive the better prize you can choose. Also remember just for coming on the day and running you will receive a free pair of UV400 sunglasses, a support wristband, a headband and a Berri Quelch Fruit Juice ice block.

School uniform must be worn on the day, however we do ask that you bring a spare change of clothes to school, most importantly a plain white shirt and an older pair of shorts to change into for the event as the students will be covered in powder and will be wet from head to toe. We also ask that a towel be brought in on the day for your child to use after their run. The Australian Fundraising company recommend that if you are worried about your child breathing in the powder than they could also bring in a bandana to wear. Students who are returning home on the bus will need to be changed back into their school uniform before leaving for the day. The event will start at 1:30pm on the 5th April with the race order being Year 2, Year 1, Prep, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6. Students will run for 10 minutes around the course. Parents and specta-tors are welcome! HOW TO ORDER YOUR PRIZE? EASY! You have two options to order your prizes – by either completing and returning the back page of the Sponsorship Form to the school by April 4th 2019 or login or create a Profile Page at www.myprofilepage.com.au. You have 7 days until the 11th April to order your prize online. I would also like to remind you that a consent form was sent out via email. You only need to com-plete this form and return to the Administration Office if you DO NOT consent for your child/s to par-ticipate in the School Run4Fun Colour Explosion. If we don’t receive this your child will participate on the day.
