EMPOWERING STUDENTS For A Lifetime Of Success

2015 Annual Report

EMPOWERING STUDENTS TO SUCCEED IN SCHOOL AND ACHIEVE IN LIFE

DEAR FRIENDS,

Last year, Communities In Schools celebrated 30 years of helping to break the cycle of poverty in Central Texas by providing critical supports to keep students in school and on the path to a brighter future. At the heart of our model are integrated student services and a school-based program manager who brings services and resources into schools to benefit young people at risk of dropping out. It is a model that is both student-focused and data-driven.

As we look back at 2015, I am proud of all that was accomplished, including these highlights:

• Of the thousands of case-managed students receiving targeted interventions during the 2014-15 school year, 99% of the students remained in school and 84% improved grades, attendance or behavior

• CIS expanded programming to 61 campuses with the addition of Barrington and Barbara Jordan Elementary Schools

• Two longstanding and innovative CIS programs were honored as Bright Spots by The White House Initia-tive on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, the CIS ASPIRE Family Literacy Program and the CIS XY-Zone Program

• CIS introduced Trauma Training for Educators, a free, online training designed to give anyone who works with children important trauma-focused information about how student learning and behavior is impacted by trauma and how to help students have a greater sense of safety at school. View the training video at ciscentraltexas.org

We are grateful to our supporters, both public and pri-vate, for allowing us to help tens of thousands of stu-dents, their families, their teachers, and our community.

Sincerely,

Suki SteinhauserChief Executive Officer

ON-CAMPUS STUDENT SUPPORT The founding principle of CIS is to establish one-on-one relation-ships with individual students in order to support them beyond obstacles to success in school. CIS places a full-time social service provider on each school campus to deliver a wide range of services. Campus-based programming includes crisis intervention, individual counseling, support groups, life skills, tutoring, mentoring, basic needs, and enrichment activities – all tailored to meet the individual needs of students so they can fully engage in learning and be academically successful.
