ALBERTINA KERR REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 2015–16

Empowering Lives & Community

109 YEARS STRONG

Albertina Kerr has a strong 109-year history in Oregon and I am humbled to be only the fifth leader over all those years. I want to thank Chris Krenk who served as Albertina Kerr’s CEO for 26 years and retired in June. The legacy he left behind and the work he did over his tenure has been instrumental in helping serve more Oregonians. My passion since graduating from college has been to support and empower children and families who find themselves often living on the margins of our community. My goal is to lead Albertina Kerr and our 860 team members into the future by continuing to create the awareness that leads to more acceptance and inclusion of those we serve in our community. Our employees are the true backbone of what makes Albertina Kerr an amazing and special place – consistently giving above and beyond my expectations.

This past year saw many highlights for Albertina Kerr including serving 2,201 children, adults, and their families; we officially dedicated our 10-acre Campus as part of our Community Promise campaign, a $6.3 million investment. We launched our Legacy Phase of the campaign to increase our Guardian Angel Society Memberships to at least 150 Planned Gift Supporters. You can read more about the Legacy Phase in this report. Another highlight we’re proud of is starting our second Project SEARCH intern class with a new partner, Embassy Suites by Hilton Portland Airport. Project SEARCH is a nine month internship program which provides young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities valuable job skills, meaningful employment, and a start to their career path. You’ll find more about this exciting program in this report as well.

We appreciate all you do to support Albertina Kerr and we thank you for being part of our Army of Angels.

ON BEHALF OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

AND FOUNDATION TRUSTEES, THANK YOU.

Thank you to the donors and volunteers who generously advance Albertina Kerr’s mission with their time and resources. Thank you to Albertina Kerr’s front-line, direct service providers who, day in and day out, deliver often difficult but consistently outstanding care to many of the most vulnerable members of our communities. Thank you to Albertina Kerr’s leadership team who guides the organization, with particular thanks to recently retired CEO Chris Krenk. Chris did an outstanding job of leading the agency’s growth and programs during the 26 years that he served as our CEO and he deserves much gratitude. And thank you to Jeff Carr for joining us as our current CEO after we conducted a national search. Jeff brings a demonstrated track record of outstanding executive leadership, team-building, and fundraising skills to help shape Albertina Kerr’s future vision to meet the community’s needs. He is already making a positive impact.

Over the past year, Albertina Kerr has continued to grow due to your generous support. The ongoing commitment by our donors, supporters, and partners, along with the strong team members at Albertina Kerr, continues to help educate, advocate, and empower. Support for children’s mental health crises and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities is crucial to help those most vulnerable. The more our community advocates and educates, the stronger our community is and those we serve become empowered to live richer lives.

It is an honor for us to serve Albertina Kerr and we sincerely thank you for your ongoing support and for being part of our Army of Angels.

2015–16 HIGHLIGHTS

LONG TERM CEO CHRIS KRENK RETIRED

After 26 years of dedicated service, Chris Krenk retired from Albertina Kerr in June. The number of lives that were empowered under Chris’ guidance is countless. With Chris’ retirement, we welcomed Jeff Carr as the next CEO. Jeff brings a demonstrated track record of outstanding executive leadership, team-building, and fundraising, and will lead Albertina Kerr to continually impact and empower the lives of the most vulnerable members of the community, help shape our future vision to meet the community’s needs, and continue strong stewardship of its resources and the community’s generosity.

ALBERTINA KERR CAMPUS

In May 2016, we gathered as a community to dedicate the completed 10-acre Albertina Kerr Campus with more than $6.3 million in donor investments from the Community Promise Campaign. The campus furthers an important transition away from reliance on institutional care of children with acute mental health challenges and toward community-based care. It expands services and meets the community need for this vulnerable, high-risk population by wrapping around critical services for children and their families directly in their homes, schools, and communities. The campus will provide care for nearly 1,000 children and their families each year.

ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORDS

Children’s Developmental Health Services was the first of our service lines to go live with Epic, our new electronic health records platform. By the end of 2017, Epic will be implemented across Albertina Kerr to bring all our services and clients under a single, integrated electronic health record platform.

PROJECT ECHO

Children’s Developmental Health Services (CDHS) launched Project ECHO, a tele-mentoring model that uses video conferencing technology to give primary care physicians throughout the tri-county area access to mentorship from clinical and behavioral specialists at Albertina Kerr, allowing them to expand their level of expertise to work more effectively with children who have developmental delays and disabilities. This enables providers to treat patients with common complex conditions, rather than referring them on to CDHS or other specialty clinics. Increased patient retention and satisfaction keeps patients at their local health center, and treated within their own community.

2015–16 HIGHLIGHTS

The Community Promise Campaign Invests $11 Million to Ensure Albertina Kerr is Always There for Oregon Families. In May 2016, we formally dedicated the Albertina Kerr Campus, a $6.3 million investment bringing together leading practitioners, critical programs, and community-based mental health services for children throughout the state of Oregon.

The final phase of the campaign is our Legacy Phase, to ensure that Albertina Kerr will be here for those in need for generations to come. The goal of this phase is to increase Guardian Angel Society memberships to at least 150 planned gifts – roughly 100 new Guardian Angels over the next two years. Guardian Angels are those who have made a provision for Albertina Kerr through their will, living trust, life insurance, retirement plan, or made a life income gift.

Project SEARCH Empowers LivesAlbertina Kerr’s employment program, Project SEARCH, helps young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities gain job skills, find jobs, and maintain their employment and transition to careers in integrated workplaces.

Project SEARCH is a nine-month internship and employment training model where participants receive classroom instruction, career exploration, and relevant job skills training through strategically designed internships. Interns rotate through unpaid internships with continual feedback for improvement with the outcome goal of gaining employment in the community.

Learning work/social skills, the interns work alongside the host company’s employees, as well as learn marketable skills through daily 5-hour shifts. At the end of the nine months, graduates are job ready and have worked on technical skills and soft skills including communication, accountability, and customer service. Interns also build resumes and prepare for job interviews.

These personal benefits contribute to breaking down negative stereotypes of people who have an intellectual or developmental disability. 85 percent of Albertina Kerr Project SEARCH participants have found jobs in integrated, competitive work places.

The Harris Family: Scott, Austin and Claudette

“Albertina Kerr looked at Austin’s strengths and what he can do. Albertina Kerr always looked at what he could do and achieve and learn.”

—Claudette Harris

AUSTIN HARRIS, PROJECT SEARCH GRADUATE

Austin, a 25 year-old from Forest Grove, was volunteering at ReStore, Habitat for Humanity’s home improvement outlet, and didn’t have any set career goals or plans. Austin applied to participate in Project SEARCH and went through the nine month program to help his confidence, social skills, and work skills for a better future. With the help of Project SEARCH, Austin found a full-time job at Intel with stable hours, a Monday through Friday work week, full benefits, and a salary higher than minimum wage.

“I had to hide knives and anything that Nathan could have used as a weapon. Albertina Kerr literally saved our lives. We were on our way to someone being seriously hurt or put in jail. Someone finally listened and said the situation is getting worse, not better and what can we do? For the first time, there was a sense of hope.”
