EMPOWERING ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES IN EVERY STUDENT
Annual Report 2017-18
Annual Report 2017-2018 P.G. CHAMBERS SCHOOL 3
LETTER OF THANKSDear Friends,
The 2017-2018 year was an exciting year for P.G. Chambers School — one of change, growth, fond farewells, and new beginnings. Led by our guiding principles, to instill a love of learning, develop independence, and establish unshakeable self-confidence in every student, we continued to focus on and strengthen our efforts to do just that. This would not be possible without the support of our generous community who gave selflessly of their time, talent and treasure.
Our continuing work is always informed by the lessons we learn each day from both formal evaluation and anecdotal observations. In collaboration with families, we strive to develop strategies and interventions, therapy approaches, and new technology that will help children achieve important benchmarks as they continue their journey of discovery at PGCS. This year we conducted a needs assessment, called the Healthy Schools Report Card, to identify our strengths and challenges and set the parameters for our evolving strategic plan. From this came our Whole Child, Whole School, Whole Community initiative. Health, fitness, and independence have been strengthened as key themes for the students. These themes extend to staff and families. We held our first “Back to School Health Fair” where many community partners joined with us for a day of health and wellness awareness.
The organization fosters an environment of empowerment for the children and the staff. The children are taught skills and given tools to self-advocate. They participate in increasingly complex decision making and planning. In middle school, they have the opportunity to participate in the Student Leadership Group and in their own student centered visioning and planning process. Likewise, our staff members are offered leadership training. Most notably, the LEAD Program is a year-long training and mentorship program for a selected group of staff who had demonstrated a desire to enhance/develop their leadership skills. As LEAD participants, staff members create a personal vision statement and develop short, mid and long term goals toward achieving that vision. These programs and opportunities have resulted in exciting initiatives for the students and staff and will continue as part of our overall organizational priorities.
In June, we said a very fond farewell to our executive director of 25 years, Susan Seamans. Under her leadership, our organization and school has continued to grow in support of every student and family who is touched by our many programs and services. Most recently, her vision and leadership led to an outpouring of support for The Susan Seamans Legacy Campaign generating $130,000 to help fund the organization’s leadership, early intervention, and endowment efforts. Susan’s impact will be felt for generations to come and we are thankful to the many benefactors who came together in her honor to support our staff, students and families.
With every ending there is a new beginning and we were delighted to welcome Patty Sly as executive director at the end of the year. Her passion for our mission is heartfelt and we look forward to the continuing leadership and excellence that she will bring to P.G. Chambers School.
We also extend our sincere gratitude to the members of the Board of Trustees who completed their terms: Wendy Tait, Joanne Balady, Gwen Packard, James Brazel, and Keith Savel and welcomed new trustees Lesley Draper, Abbey Horwitz, Susan Lodge, Joseph Longo, Peter Porraro, Gabe Sasso and Steve Tuttle. We are thankful for their leadership and look forward to continuing to move the organization forward in the years to come.
Please join us in thanking our many donors and volunteers. Together, we are making possibilities for every child endless and we are extremely grateful for your continued partnership in all that we do.
Unjeria C. Jackson, M.D. President, Board of Trustees 2017-2018

P.G. CHAMBERS SCHOOL GETS RESULTS!P.G. Chambers School gets results! How do we know? We measure the students’ academic skills and progress along with social, communication, physical navigation and personal care skills. When we get positive results, we stay the course and when we don’t, we adjust our approach. For example, results from 2013-2015 indicated a decline in self-care skills in most grade levels. We needed to reverse that decline because self-care skills are a foundation for academic achievement and independence.
Early in 2016, principal Heather Gilliland and occupational therapy director Dawn Hearne analyzed the data and developed a plan that included staff education, curriculum integration, parent communication and additional occupational therapy during peak self-care activity times (e.g. morning arrivals during taking off coats and unpacking of belongings, and mealtimes.)
And the effort paid off!
During the 2017-2018 school year, 76% of our students demonstrated gains in their self-care skills*:
From 2016-2017 our students demonstrated gains in their personal care skills*:
PRESCHOOLERS . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 60% INCREASE
EARLY CHILDHOOD STUDENTS . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 21% INCREASE
ELEMENTARY STUDENTS . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2% INCREASE

Annual Report 2017-2018 P.G. CHAMBERS SCHOOL 5
“ MY FAVORITE MEMORY AT P.G. CHAMBERS SCHOOL IS WALKING LIGHTNING FAST TO CLASS EVERY MORNING.”
This might not sound like much, but for Michael Henry, it means everything. Hospitalized for the first five months of his life, Michael and his twin brother were discharged and immediately started an early intervention program. Michael was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at about 1 year of age.
When Michael turned three, he enrolled at PGCS through the recommendation of two family friends. When first enrolled, Michael was under weight and had difficulty eating; part of his diagnosis was failure to thrive. PGCS head nurse at the time, Dawn Fontana, and the team worked closely with him and, with a lot of oral stimulation, she was successful in getting him to eat pureed foods. Dawn would play two minutes of his favorite movie, Cars, and then pause the movie and get in a few spoonfuls. She would do this everyday. Pretty soon Michael was eating and gaining weight.
Another milestone was when Michael said his first word. “Pre-school teacher Kathy Rossi called me one day and said that Michael had said the word ‘butterfly’”, recalls Michael’s mom Chris. “I rushed to his classroom. He said the word again to me. Amazing for him to speak and even more remarkable he started with a three syllable word!”
Michael’s love of performing blossomed over time. He often would make morning announcements and tell a daily joke over the loudspeaker! He enthusiastically participated in PGCS’ music program and his confidence grew. Through PGCS’ partnership with the Morris Museum, Michael was able to perform at their open mic night telling jokes and singing.
Michael’s transition to high school was a concern for his parents. But, when they went to see PG RISE at Randolph High School they immediately felt a sense of inclusion. When it was announced that Margey Dwyre, an experienced PGCS special education teacher, would be his teacher Michael’s parents knew they had made the right choice.
“Michael always surprises me. Initially people find him to be quiet, but he has a lot to say, it just takes time,” explains Margey. “He is learning to initiate more and speak up regarding his needs. He reads beautifully and has adapted really well to the high school.”
“Michael is a tough little nut. He was never supposed to talk and really was not expected to do much at all,” explains Chris. “But he is strong and he perseveres and always with a sense of humor. PGCS gave him the confidence and this has helped him thrive. Thanks to PGCS and all the love, care and interventions they provided, my little guy who was failing to thrive is now flourishing!”

STUDENTS FINDING THEIR WAY THROUGH PERSON CENTERED PLANNINGIn 2017, PGCS developed its own person centered planning process to empower students in determining their futures. Through MyIDEA, the student, the family, and the team work together to improve each student’s transition to high school. A facilitated planning approach is used building on each student’s strengths and goals, and amplifying their voice as they explore options and preferences.
One participant, Michael Henry, and his family participated in this planning process to create a dream board for his future goals. The school and his family refer to it from time to time to check on his progress. On it you can see his desire to go to the dance, to create his own YouTube channel and to meet girls. Our students share the dreams of every teenager, and thanks to your support those dreams become a reality.
