Empowered Leadership Workshops 2015 Leadership Myths Leadership is about the guy at the top (Many or everyone needs to be involved) Leadership is about individuals and their qualities and skills (It is about the capacity of the whole system) Leaders create and communicate vision (leaders listen and co-create vision) Need for Breakthrough Opportunity FrustrationBreakthrough faith WeaknessStrength resurrectiongrace FailureBattle Threat Breakthrough Leadership From me to we Better relating to others Better relating to the whole Better relating to self Explore edges of system Co-creative Thinking Explore edges of self Open mind Open heart Open will Moving from Me to We Better relating to the Self: identity, awareness, spiritual practice, wisdom Better relating to others: seeing Christ in others, moving beyond our churches, striving for justice, baptismal covenant Better relating to the whole: kingdom perspective, global patterns, movement of the Spirit Discussion What does your congregation do or could begin to do to encourage better relating to the self? To others? To the whole world/cosmos/kingdom of God? Exploring the Edges of the System System thinking Adaptive thinking Entrainment Collective Leadership Transforming systems The Current System Symptoms Themes and Patterns Systemic Disconnects Mental Models Adaptive Thinking Adaptive leadership is the practice of mobilizing people to tackle tough challenges and thrive, and has three characteristics: Preserves essential congregational identity Discards the parts of the congregational culture that no longer serves Creates congregational cultural arrangements for the ability to flourish Mobilizing People Get on the balcony Determine Ripeness of the challenge in the system Who am I, in this picture? (Role in the whole) Think hard about your Framing of the challenge Hold steady Analyze factions that begin to emerge Keep the work at the center of peoples attention Adaptive Process observeinterpretact Entrainment Listen to the whole and at the same time attune ones instrument to the emerging pattern Bend the beam of attention to the Source, to God who is directing Collective Leadership The ability to hold and evolve our collective attention at the same rate at which reality around us keeps changing. We need to develop new collective leadership mechanisms that allow a diverse constellation of players to connect, co-sense, and co-create. This calls for deepening levels of awareness and avoiding the blind spots which keep us from seeing the future possibilities. Leaders and Transformation We cannot transform systems unless we transform the quality of attention people apply to their actions individually and collectively. Quality of results produced by any system depends on the quality of awareness from which people in a system operate. Form follows consciousness. Discussion What shifts are needed for our congregation to become a learning community steeped in quality awareness of the whole and members role in the whole? Exploring the Edges of the Self Theory U Shadow side Absensing Practices of Renewing Leadership Principles of Renewing Leadership Primary battlefield is with ourselves Theory U Avoiding Shadow of the U - Absensing Absensing holding onmanipulating De-sensingDeluding entrenching One will abusing Denying One us Aborting blinding Stuck in one truth disembody DownloadingDestroying Social Structures Absencing Presencing Linear communication Exclusion based transparency Serve the well being of a few Cyclical communication Inclusion based transparency Serve the well being of all Leadership Practices Preparation inner transformation, contemplation Igniting passion commit to pursue inquiry on the edges Observing and Immersing seeing with fresh eyes Letting go mental models, mindsets, world views Indwelling and Illumination surrendering to the Self (identity in God) and Work (Vocation/Mission) Crystallizing and Prototyping Testing and Verifying usable programs/ initiatives Renewing Leadership Principles Energy follows attention shift from what we are trying to avoid to what we want to create Follow movements of the U Go to edges of the self suspend judgment, empathize, let go, let come Go through the Eye of the needle Who is my Self? What is my Work? Transform 3 enemies: VOJ, VOC, VOF Start by attending to the cracks, openings, challenges, disruptions, breakthrough opportunities Principles - continued Hold space for transforming fields of conversation: from debate to dialogue to collective creativity Strengthen sources of presencing to avoid destructive dynamics of absensing Discussion What practices or principles would you like or need to develop to be a more effective breakthrough/renewing leader?
