Preface

The Empower 2 Upgrade and Configuration Guide provides the information you need to upgrade and configure the Empower™ Software system. It includes procedures for upgrading the hardware and the software on Empower Personal stand-alone workstations, Empower Workgroup PCs, and Empower Enterprise client/server systems.

This guide is for system installers whose expertise can lie in chemistry or chromatography and who also understand basic Empower operations. Installers should have a mastery of computer concepts and a working knowledge of networks. They should also have experience in working with these:

• Real-time data acquisition systems

• Intel Pentium Server (for Enterprise configurations)

• Windows XP Professional or Windows 2000 Professional operating system

• Networks (for Workgroup and Enterprise configurations)

• Oracle database software

Note: Hardware installation and configuration tasks are typically handled by an IT representative using appropriate product documentation. As with network installation and configuration, general hardware installation and configuration tasks are beyond the scope of this document but are critical to the successful operation of Empower.

Organization

This guide contains the following:

Chapter 1 introduces the product and describes the system requirements and supported devices.

Chapter 2 provides hardware installation and configuration procedures.

Chapter 3 provides software upgrade procedures for the Empower Personal workstation.

Chapter 4 provides software upgrade procedures for a server in an Empower Enterprise client/server configuration or for a primary PC in a Workgroup configuration.

Chapter 5 provides software upgrade procedures for a client.

Chapter 6 provides software upgrade procedures for the LAC/E™32 Acquisition Server

or acquisition client (also called an Empower node).

Chapter 7 provides procedures for installing the WatersService as a separate service on a server (such as a file server) other than the Empower database server.

Convention Usage

Italic Italic indicates information that you supply such as variables. It also indicates emphasis and document titles. For example, “Replace file_name with the actual name of your file.”

Courier Courier indicates examples of source code and system output. For example, “The SVRMGR> prompt appears.”

The Waters Empower™ Software system includes these elements:

• Chromatographic instrumentation

• Chromatographic data acquisition and data processing computers

• Empower software, a 32-bit data acquisition and management software application with advanced integrated database architecture

The system acquires, processes, reports, and manages chromatographic information. Empower converts high-quality, accurate results into usable information while meeting security and regulatory compliance requirements. It is a complete chromatography and results management system that you can adapt to your individual chromatography requirements by using as many or as few Empower software capabilities as you require.

1.1 Typical System Configurations

Empower can operate in the following configurations:

• Empower Personal workstation (see Figure 1-1)

• Empower Workgroup (see Figure 1-2)

• Empower Enterprise system (see Figure 1-3)

Empower can support these devices:

• Up to four busSAT/IN Modules through an I/O distribution box on the stand-alone Empower Personal workstations, Workgroups, and LAC/E32 Acquisition Servers

• Multiple RS-232-based devices (such as gas chromatographs and detectors)

• Up to 14 IEEE-488-based devices using no more than 20 meters (65 feet) of cable in total, and no more than 4 meters (13 feet) of cabling between devices (Table 1-6)

If your system is insufficient regarding some requirements, the installation will continue; however, the installation will not be validated. Chapter 2Installing and Configuring the Hardware

Use this chapter to install and configure the hardware for the Waters Empower Software system.

For all configurations, except an Empower Personal workstation, a network is required in your facility so that the Workgroups and/or the Empower Enterprise System can function. Waters personnel do not run or install network cabling.

Note: If your Waters technical service representative has already installed and configured the system for you, proceed to Section 2.6, Starting Up the System.

2.1 Selecting the Site

Locate the Empower system in a clean area, free from shock, vibration, and extremes of temperature and humidity.

Environmental Requirements

The Empower system is designed to operate within the following temperature and humidity ranges:

• Temperature – 10 to 31 °C (50 to 88 °F)

• Humidity – 20 to 80% relative humidity, noncondensing, maximum wet bulb of 25 °C and minimum dew point of 2 °C

Note: Acceptable temperature and humidity ranges vary according to the specific model of computer and printer.

Bench Space

Allow sufficient bench space for the Empower Personal workstation, Workgroup, or client computers (keyboard, monitor, system unit, and printer) as recommended in the documentation supplied with the computer. You can place the computers on the lab bench or on a desktop near the chromatography instrumentation. The total bench space you require depends upon the number of devices you plan to configure (pumps, detectors, autosamplers, busSAT/IN Modules, and so on).

Cable Lengths

Arrange the components of your chromatographic system to minimize cable lengths. Ensure that you use optimal cable lengths to ensure proper signal transmission. Maximum cable lengths are listed in Table 1-6.

Instrument Arrangement

Make sure the ventilation slots on all instruments are not blocked. Allow at least 6 inches (15 cm) of space on all sides of each instrument to ensure adequate air flow.

For information on the best arrangement of your Empower system and connected instruments, consult your Waters technical service representative.

2.2 Installing and Configuring Computer Systems

This section describes the process for installing and configuring the Empower computer systems and other components.

2.2.1 Empower Personal Workstation

The Empower Personal workstation supports these cards:

• A busLAC/E (IEEE-488 interface) card for connecting Waters IEEE-488 devices

• An optional 8-port serial card for connecting 6890 GCs or other supported serial instruments

• A second network interface card for ethernet instruments

To install and set up the Empower Personal workstation:

1. Unpack and place the workstation in the desired location.

2. Attach the keyboard, mouse, and monitor to the workstation.

3. To install other computer peripherals such as a printer or optional tape drive, see the installation documentation supplied with the device.

4. Ensure that the busLAC/E (IEEE-488 interface) card is installed in the workstation and is set up correctly (see “busLAC/E Card” on page 16).

5. Connect the IEEE-488 chromatography instruments to the busLAC/E card in the workstation using the IEEE-488 cable (see Section 2.3, Connecting IEEE-488 Chromatographic Devices).

6. Connect and configure the serial or ethernet devices (see Section 2.4, Connecting Non IEEE-488 Chromatographic Devices).

7. Power up the workstation (see Section 2.6, Starting Up the System).

2.2.2 Empower Workgroup or Enterprise System

The Empower Workgroup or Empower Enterprise system consists of a server, one or more clients, and one or more LAC/E32 Acquisition Servers. Each computer in the Empower Enterprise system requires at least one network interface card.

Chromatographic devices in an Empower Enterprise system or Workgroup are connected to the LAC/E32 Acquisition Server. The LAC/E32 Acquisition Server provides distributed acquisition for the Workgroup and Enterprise configurations including:

• Data acquisition

• Instrument control

• Remote access to instruments

• Remote data processing in Run and Report modes

To set up the Empower Enterprise system:

1. Unpack and place the server in the desired location.

2. Attach the keyboard, monitor, and mouse to the server.

3. To install other computer peripherals such as a printer or optional tape drive, see the installation documentation supplied with the device.

4. Ensure that the network interface card is installed in the server and is set up correctly (see “Network Interface Card for a LAN” on page 18). If you are using ethernet instruments, ensure a second network interface card is present. If you are using serial instruments, ensure a serial card is present.

5. Set up the clients:

a. Unpack and place each client in the desired location.

b. Attach the keyboard, mouse, and monitor to the computer.

c. Ensure that the network interface card is installed in each client and is set up correctly.

d. Repeat steps 5a to 5c for each client in the Enterprise system.

e. Connect the clients to the network.

6. Set up the LAC/E32 Acquisition Server:

a. Unpack and place each LAC/E32 Acquisition Server in the desired location.

b. Ensure that the network interface card is installed in each LAC/E32 Acquisition Server and is set up correctly.

c. Connect the LAC/E32 Acquisition Servers to the network.

d. Connect the chromatographic instruments to each LAC/E32 Acquisition Server.

2.2.3 Optional Interface Cards

Note: Direct connection to the COM port on an Empower Personal workstation or an acquisition client without a busLAC/E card is allowed when you are acquiring data from a SAT/IN2 Module and a 474 Detector.

busLAC/E Card

The Empower Personal workstation uses a busLAC/E card to function with Empower. Chromatographic devices connect to the busLAC/E card. The busLAC/E card performs two primary functions:

• Acquires data from a detector and transmits the data to the computer

• Controls chromatographic devices

The busLAC/E card is a microprocessor-based interface card that allows Empower to communicate with chromatography instruments. The busLAC/E card transmits commands from Empower to detectors, autosamplers, pumps, and other devices over the IEEE-488 and custom interfaces using an IEEE-488 cable. Data from the devices are transmitted through the busLAC/E card to the computer for analysis.

You can have a maximum total aggregate data rate of 400 points per second for all detectors connected to the busLAC/E card per four systems per four projects, except in configurations including a PDA detector or configurations with a combination of LC and GC instrumentation. Table 2-1 describes the exceptions to the data rate for each instrument type.

8-Port Serial Card

The 8-port serial card transmits commands from Empower to the serial instrument. Data from the chromatograph are transmitted through a single port on the 8-port serial card to Empower for analysis.

The card has eight possible serial connections. Each instrument type requires one connection. The 8-port serial card can connect to the following supported instruments, with the restrictions as indicated:

• 5890S/7673S systems (maximum of four)

• 6890 instruments (maximum of four)

• 6890/SAT/IN2 systems (maximum of four)

• SAT/IN2 instruments (maximum of eight; to be used as four multi-channel systems)

Gas Chromatograph Maximum total data rate of 200 points per second for each 6890 GC system.Maximum total data rate of 20 points per second for the control of two 5890 GC systems and 5 points per second on two addi-tional LC systems.

PDA (Personal) Two systems allowed, each with a 996 or 2996 PDA Detector running at 300-nm maximum range for each system, 1.2-nm resolution, and 5 spectra per second.One 996 or 2996 PDA detector can be running at either half spectrum at 4.8-nm resolution and 5 spectra per second, or half spectrum at 1.2-nm resolution and 1 spectrum per second, and three other LC systems can be running at a maximum aggre-gate data rate of 30 points per second.

PDA (Workgroup) Two systems allowed, each with a 996 or 2996 PDA Detector running at a 1000-nm combined range, 1.2-nm resolution, and 10 spectra per second.

Two-System Acquisition

When you perform a two-system acquisition (one system being a 600/717/486 and the other system being 2695/996 or 2695/2996), the maximum data rate for the 486-based system should be 2 points per second and for the 996- or 2996-based system, 5 spectra per second, with 1.2-nm resolution and a wavelength range of 190 to 800 nm.

Network Interface Card for a LAN

A client, LAC/E32, and/or Personal workstation may have an additional network interface card (NIC) in order to communicate with Ethernet instruments (such as the e-SAT/IN or 2475 Detector). You must assign an IP address to this network card (also called an Instrument Network Card) so that it is able to assign IP addresses to your Ethernet instruments. To set the IP address, Empower must first be installed on the client, LAC/E32, or workstation. Use the Configure DHCP tab of the Empower Node Properties dialog box in Configuration Manager to configure the IP address. For details, see the Ethernet Instrument Getting Started Guide or see the topic “Configuring chromatographic instruments” in the Empower Help.

2.3 Connecting IEEE-488 Chromatographic Devices

Use this section to connect the IEEE-488 components of your chromatographic system to the busLAC/E card in an Empower Personal workstation or a LAC/E32 Acquisition Server.

2.3.1 busLAC/E Card Connections

The busLAC/E card connects to peripheral devices through two ports on the rear edge of the card as follows (Figure 2-1):

• IEEE-488 port – Used for connecting to IEEE-488-controlled devices such as these:

– Waters 2690/2695 Separations Module

– Waters 996/2996 PDA Detector

– Waters 717plus Autosampler

– Waters 2487 Dual λ Absorbance Detector

• I/O distribution port – Used for connecting to serial devices such as these:

– Waters busSAT/IN Module

STOPAttention: Do not use the Equinox driver provided by Microsoft Windows. During the first power-up after installing the serial card, Microsoft Windows detects the new hardware and automatically installs a driver version for the Equinox card. You must update this driver to a supported version. See Section 6.1.2, Updating the Equinox Driver, for instructions.

An IEEE-488 cable connects the 2690/2695 Separations Modules, 996/2996 PDA Detectors, 2487 Absorbance Detectors, and other IEEE-488 devices to the busLAC/E card (Figure 2-2).

An I/O distribution cable connects the I/O distribution box to the I/O distribution port of the busLAC/E card. Serial instruments and devices, including the busSAT/IN Module, connect to the busLAC/E card through the I/O distribution box.

Note: Empower supports the use of one 996/2996 PDA Detector at a full data rate of 10 spectra/sec. At this rate, Empower supports one additional chromatographic system with a data rate of 10 points/sec. If you use a 996/2996 PDA Detector at half spectra or a data rate of 5 spectra/sec, you can run three other chromatographic systems with an aggregate data rate of 30 points/sec.

2.3.2 Interface Overview

The IEEE-488 bus is an instrument interface that connects devices using one communication protocol. In the Empower system, the IEEE-488 interface connects Waters IEEE-488 chromatography devices to the busLAC/E card.

The busLAC/E card is an instrument controller, assigning the role of active talker or listener to each attached device on the IEEE-488 bus. Each instrument designated as an active talker supplies information to the other devices on the IEEE-488 bus. Each device designated as a listener receives information from an active talker device. Only one active talker is allowed at a time, but several listeners can be active simultaneously.

2.3.3 Interface Guidelines

According to IEEE-488 protocol specifications, use the following guidelines:

• Always keep all devices powered up while your system is in use.

• The maximum number of devices that can be connected together to form one interface system is 15 (14 instruments plus the busLAC/E card).

• The maximum total cable length to connect the devices and the busLAC/E card in one interface system is 2 meters (6.5 feet) times the number of devices, or 20 meters (65 feet), whichever is smaller (see Table 1-6).

• The maximum cable length between two devices is 4 meters (13 feet).

• The minimum cable length between two devices is 1 meter (3.25 feet).

Note: For details on setting IEEE-488 device addresses, see Section 2.3.6, Setting IEEE-488 Device Addresses.

• Use addresses 2 through 29 for instruments.

• While a system is active on the IEEE-488 bus, do not power up or down any device on the bus.

2.3.4 Making Cable Connections

The Empower system supports the Waters IEEE-488 devices in Table 1-7.

To connect IEEE-488 devices:

1. Connect the single-receptacle end of the IEEE-488 cable (supplied with the Empower system) to the busLAC/E card (Figure 2-3).

STOPAttention: Cable lengths greater than the maximum values or less than the minimum values can cause IEEE-488 communication failures. Use the minimal cable lengths to ensure proper signal transmission.

2. Connect the other end of the IEEE-488 cable (with the stackable connector for daisy-chaining additional instruments) to the IEEE-488 connector on an instrument.

3. Use one end of another IEEE-488 cable to connect to the stackable connector on the first instrument. Connect the other end of the cable to the IEEE-488 port on the next instrument.

4. Repeat step 3 for each additional instrument, up to 14 IEEE-488 instruments. See Table 1-6 for cable-length limitations.

Note: The order in which you connect IEEE-488 devices to the busLAC/E card is not important. For example, you can connect the injector either before or after the detector.

5. Ensure that all IEEE-488 cable connector screws are fastened finger tight.

2.3.5 Making Device Connections

PCM Connections

The Waters Pump Control Module (PCM) is an IEEE-488 device that controls the 500-Series Pumps. Connect the PCM to the IEEE-488 bus as described in Section 2.3.2, Interface Overview.

TCM Connections

The Waters Temperature Control Module (TCM) is an IEEE-488 device that regulates the temperature of up to three column heaters. Connect the TCM to the IEEE-488 bus as described in Section 2.3.2, Interface Overview.

Pump Connections

If you are using a 2690/2695, 600 Series Pump (Waters 600E, 616, 625 LC, 626, 650E, ActION Analyzer, Delta Prep, and Prep LC), you can connect to the busLAC/E card through the IEEE-488 port or to other IEEE-488 devices in a stacked configuration (see Section 2.3.2, Interface Overview).

Note: If you are using a PowerLine™/Gradient version of software on your 600 Series Multisolvent Delivery System, configure the controller software as a Gradient controller through the front panel keypad (not through Empower). See the appropriate operator's guide for information on configuring the controller.

Injector Connections

Detectors and system controllers that are not controlled by an Empower system (for example, 2690/2695, 600 Series controller, and GC) require an inject start trigger signal (contact closure) from the injector as each injection occurs. The inject start trigger signal instructs detectors and system controllers to acquire data or run methods.

Waters autosamplers transmit the inject start signal over the IEEE-488 bus or by trigger wire. If you connect a Waters 2690/2695, 717, or a 717plus to an IEEE-488 interface, you do not need to make any additional connections for an inject start signal.

When under IEEE-488 control, the 2690/2695 Sample Management System, 717, and 717plus Autosamplers transmit the inject start signal directly over the IEEE-488 bus during data acquisition. All controlled devices are triggered simultaneously when an injection is made by these instruments. Trigger wires are not required when all instruments in a chromatographic system are controlled over the IEEE-488 bus and the busSAT/IN Module.

Note: Any instrument that is not controlled by Empower requires an inject start trigger wire connection.

Detector Connections

Detectors with an installed IEEE-488 interface can be connected directly to the busLAC/E card as described in Section 2.3.2, Interface Overview.

Detectors that do not include an IEEE-488 interface must be connected to a busSAT/IN Module for data collection. The busSAT/IN Module then connects to the I/O distribution box or IEEE-488 interface (see Section 2.4.3, BusLAC/E I/O Distribution Box).

2.3.6 Setting IEEE-488 Device Addresses

You must set a unique address for each device connected on the IEEE-488 bus so that the busLAC/E card recognizes each device. Valid IEEE-488 instrument addresses are 2 through 29. Set the IEEE-488 addresses of the Waters instruments in your system through either the software or DIP switches (Figure 2-4) as indicated in Table 2-1.

Figure 2-4 shows the arrangement of DIP switches on a DIP switch block (on the rear panel of a device).

Scanning the IEEE-488 Bus

After you set the IEEE-488 address for a device, the busLAC/E card must scan the IEEE-488 bus. To scan the IEEE-488 bus, see “Configuring chromatographic instruments” in the Empower Help.

Note: For the LAC/E32 Acquisition Server with the WatersService, the busLAC/E card automatically scans the IEEE-488 bus on startup.

Setting IEEE-488 Addresses Using DIP Switches

To set an IEEE-488 address using DIP switches:

1. Ensure that no instruments are connected to the busLAC/E card.

2. Power down the IEEE-488 device.

3. Using the DIP switches on the rear panel of the device (see Figure 2-4), set a unique IEEE-488 address for the device.

Note: Although there are 28 valid addresses (2 through 29), IEEE-488 protocol allows up to 14 devices.

To set the IEEE-488 address for a Waters 600 Series Controller, 410 Detector, 996/2996 Detector, PCM, or TCM, see Table 2-2.

2.4 Connecting Non IEEE-488 Chromatographic Devices

Some non IEEE-488 devices produce analog output signals. A busSAT/IN Module converts the analog output signals to digital signals, then transmits those signals to the busLAC/E card. The busLAC/E card is connected to an I/O distribution box. Supported non IEEE-488 chromatography devices connect through an I/O distribution box, a PC COM port, or an optional 8-port serial card.

2.4.1 Ethernet Instruments

Ethernet instruments can connect directly to the network interface card in the computer. If you are connecting multiple Ethernet instruments, use a Waters-supplied switch to

connect the Ethernet cable from the computer to the switch, and then plug each instrument into the switch.

2.4.2 8-Port Serial Card Instruments

The 8-port cable connects directly to the Equinox serial card. Insert the RJ45 cable into Port 1 of the 8-port cable. Depending on the instrument you are controlling, the other end of the cable either connects directly to the instrument or connects to the instrument through a cable adapter. Use Waters-supplied adapters for this connection.

Note: Port 1 on the Equinox cable gives an address of 3 in Empower software.

2.4.3 BusLAC/E I/O Distribution Box

The I/O distribution box connects to the busLAC/E card. Non IEEE-488 chromatography devices communicate with the busLAC/E card through the I/O distribution box over serial cables. The I/O distribution box allows you to connect up to four non IEEE-488 devices and up to eight non IEEE-488 detectors using busSAT/IN Modules

Follow the instructions in the Waters busLAC/E Card Installation Guide to unpack and install the I/O distribution box.

2.4.4 Non IEEE Device Connections

Table 2-3 lists non IEEE device connections that are supported by Empower.

STOPAttention: For a single direct Ethernet connection, you might need to use cross-over cables to control the A1100, 6850, or EMD 1000.

For multiple Ethernet connections using a switch, you might need to use cross-over cables to control the ZQ mass spectrometer through the switch.

In both cases, if you are using more than one network interface card (NIC), you can modify the settings for the second NIC using the DHCP wizard, after you install Empower.

2.5 Connecting Mass Spectrometers

You can connect a ZQ 2000, ZQ 4000, or EMD 1000 Mass Spectrometer to an Empower Personal workstation or an acquisition client (a client connected directly to one or more chromatographic systems). The computer requires two network cards:

Note: Examples in this section reflect the current system configuration. The specific type of network card that is shipped from Waters is subject to change at any time.

2.5.1 Connecting to Empower

To connect a ZQ or EMD Mass Spectrometer to the Empower system:

1. Locate the computer within 16 feet (5 m) of the instrument.

2. Ensure that the computer has two network cards:

• MS network card

• Network card for connecting to your facility’s network

3. For a direct connection, connect one end of the network cable to the network port (no label) on the rear panel of the instrument.

Note: For the EMD instrument, use a cross-over cable. For the ZQ instrument, use a straight-through cable.

4. Connect the other end of the network cable to the port labeled MS on the rear panel of the Empower Personal workstation.

Note: If you are using a switch, connect the switch to the computer’s MS network card, and then connect the Mass Spectrometer to the switch. Use a Waters-supplied switch for this connection. Depending on your switch, you might need to use cross-over cables to control the ZQ instrument through the switch. To control the EMD instrument, you might need straight-through cable.

5. Start up the system (see Section 2.6, Starting Up the System).

6. Continue with Section 2.5.2, Configuring Mass Spectrometers.

2.5.2 Configuring Mass Spectrometers

Note: In Empower, MS control is supported only on Windows XP.

Configuring a ZQ or EMD Mass Spectrometer involves these tasks:

• Create a Micromass user account

• Configure an MS network connection

• Install Internet Information Services (IIS)

• Set IIS properties for FTP Service and default FTP sites

• Test the connection

2.6 Starting Up the System

This section contains the startup sequence for the Empower system and its peripheral equipment.

Note: For information on starting up the Empower Enterprise client/server system, see the Empower 2 System Administrator’s Guide.

For proper operation of the Empower system, power up equipment as follows:

1. Power up all equipment that is controlled through the IEEE-488 bus. Wait until any internal diagnostic tests finish.

Note: You cannot run methods, or use Run Samples, unless all devices on the IEEE-488 bus that are assigned to a system on the Empower system are powered up and have passed any calibration tests.

Note: Do not power up or down any instruments connected to a bus running any systems. Power on the pumps of an LC system first to establish a flow before powering up the detectors. Also, ensure that the carrier gas is flowing before powering up GC instruments.

2. Power up all equipment controlled by the Empower system that is not under IEEE-488 control, that is, all equipment controlled through the I/O distribution box (busSAT/IN Modules, connected analog detectors, and GC instruments).

3. Power up all equipment not controlled by the Empower system (for example, computer peripherals such as printers).

4. Power up the computers.

STOPAttention: Ensure that the computer power supply is set correctly for your site. If it is set incorrectly, your computer can be damaged.

Chapter 3Upgrading a Stand-Alone or Personal Workstation

Use this chapter to upgrade a stand-alone workstation with Millennium32 version 3.2 or version 4.0 software or an Empower Personal workstation with Empower 1154 software to an Empower Personal workstation with Empower 2 software.

The upgrade process consists of the following procedures:

1. Ensure you have the necessary requirements (Section 3.1).

2. Remove busLAC/E drivers (if applicable) (Section 3.2).

3. Back up all projects and the instsrv.dat file (Section 3.3).

4. Uninstall any license keys and options (Section 3.4).

5. Export the database (Section 3.5).

6. Uninstall the Empower 1154 or Millennium32 software (if applicable) (Section 3.6).

7. Upgrade your operating system (if necessary) (Section 3.7).

8. Install Empower (Section 3.8).

9. Complete the upgrade (Section 3.9).

3.1 Requirements

Each Empower Personal workstation requires the hardware and software specified in Table 1-1.

Note: Do not install Empower or upgrade Millennium32 on a FAT drive. If your hard drives are formatted FAT, you will need to convert them to NTFS. See the Windows documentation for conversion information.

When upgrading the software, take into account the current database size relative to your hard drive, and plan for database expansion. To determine the size of your database, see Section 3.1.2, Checking the Size of Your Database. If needed, obtain a larger hard drive and install it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Before you begin:

1. Log in to an account with Administrator privileges.

2. Back up your Millennium32 and/or Empower 1154 projects using Configuration Manager.

3. Back up and defragment the hard drive (see the Microsoft documentation and Help system) to ensure a smooth installation, and optimum performance, from Empower.

4. Close all applications, and then restart the workstation.

5. Verify that the disk drive has enough disk space to install Empower and provide space for the upgraded database (see the next section, “Determining Disk Space Requirements”). The software can be installed on one or more drives.

3.1.1 Determining Disk Space Requirements

Approximately 600 MB of free space is required on the system drive for temporary files during the Empower installation. Additional space will be required for the export and upgrade of your database.

There are several important issues to consider when determining the total amount of space required for the upgrade:

• The current size of your database

STOPAttention: You can upgrade Empower 1154 options to Empower 2 options. However, you cannot upgrade any old Millennium32 options to Empower options. For Millennium32 options, you will need new licenses.

STOPAttention: When Setup restarts the system at the end of the installation, any unsaved Windows data are permanently lost. Save and close all open files on your system before installing.

• The size of your raw data file directory

• The space necessary for your database to be upgraded

• The amount of free space available on your hard drive(s)

3.1.2 Checking the Size of Your Database

To check the current size of your database, open Configuration Manager and select View > Database Properties. The Database Properties dialog box appears (Figure 3-1). For each tablespace, refer to the line Current Tablespace Usage xx of yy MB.

Note: If you are running Millennium32 software version 3.2 and see zeros for the tablespace usage, the tablespace is greater than 2000 MB. Install Millennium32 Service Pack K to see the actual sizes.

Enter the first value in the Current Tablespace Usage column of Table 3-1 and the second value in the Tablespace Size column.

3.1.3 Space Required for Database Export

The Empower Installer examines your hard drive to determine if there is sufficient free space for it to proceed. To determine the amount of free space required by the Installer, add the values in the Tablespace Size column, multiply the value by 2, and add 100. Then add the total size of your raw data files. The result (in MB) is the amount of free space that must be available.

3.1.4 Estimating the Size of Your New Database

Add the values in the Current Tablespace Usage column and multiply by 2. This value is the estimated size of your new database. To ensure you have sufficient free space available for the database export to succeed, add the values in the Tablespace Size column, multiply by 2, and add 100. You must have at least this much free space available.

3.1.5 Freeing Project Tablespace

Database tablespaces expand to take whatever data you want to import, until the hard drive is filled. If the disk space you need for your new tablespace exceeds the amount of free space on the disk where it will reside, you can archive projects before exporting your old database, or move the new database to a larger drive. You can archive projects by backing up and then deleting them using the Configuration Manager. You can also determine the size of the projects you want to archive in the Projects view of Configuration Manager. You will need to subtract the Tablespace Free from the Tablespace Quota to

get the space used by an individual project. The sum of the sizes of the projects to archive must be at least as big as the space you need to free in the Project Tablespace.

If your database is still too large to be upgraded, please contact Waters Technical Support.

3.2 Removing the busLAC/E Drivers

If you have Millennium32 software running on a Windows 2000 system, or if you are not upgrading to Empower 2 on the same computer, you do not need to remove any busLAC/E drivers. Continue with Section 3.3, Backing Up Projects and the instsrv.dat File.

If you have Millennium32 software on an operating system other than Windows 2000 and you will be upgrading to Empower 2 using the same computer, you must first remove the busLAC/E drivers from your system.

To remove the busLAC/E drivers:

1. Insert the Millennium32 version 3.2 or 4.0 CD and double-click Setup.exe to start the installation program.

2. Select a Program Only installation of Millennium32 version 3.2 or 4.0.

3. At the Install Common System DLLs dialog box, click Yes to install all common system files (recommended).

4. At the Product support registration page, verify the information, and then click Next.

5. The Registration Confirmation page appears. Click Yes if the information is correct or No if you need to change the information.

6. At the BusLAC/E Driver Installation page, select No BusLAC/E driver (default).

7. The Re-Ask BusLAC/E Driver Installation dialog box appears. Click Yes.

The reinstall of Millennium32 software leaves the methods and data intact while removing the busLAC/E drivers.

Note: Be sure to keep track of where your data resides. You will need to know the location of your data for exporting the information to the Empower system during installation.

STOPAttention: Although the free space gained by archiving a project is not displayed in the Database Properties in Configuration Manager, the space is recovered as a part of the export/import process.

STOPAttention: If you have an ISA busLAC/E, you must remove it and uninstall the ISA driver from your system, as ISA busLAC/Es are no longer supported in Empower.

3.3 Backing Up Projects and the instsrv.dat File

3.3.1 Backing Up Projects

Note: The information in this section applies for all upgrade paths.

Use the Configuration Manager to back up your Millennium32 or Empower projects.

To back up your projects:

1. Click Configuration Manager > Projects.

2. Shift-click to select multiple projects to back up.

3. Select File > Backup Projects.

4. Follow the instructions that appear in the Backup Project Wizard.

3.3.2 Backing Up instsrv.dat

Note: The information in this section applies only for upgrades on the same workstation.

In order to preserve your chromatographic system information, back up your instsrv.dat file. Copy the file to the backup location before uninstalling previous versions of Millennium32 or Empower software. After you install Empower 2, be sure to copy the instsrv.dat file to its original location.

Copy the instsrv.dat file from the Millennium\InstrumentServer directory or the Empower \InstrumentServer directory to a safe location (a location other than the Millennium or Empower directory). You want to be able to reference this file after the Empower installation is complete.

3.4 Uninstalling Options

STOPAttention: Consider the following issues before upgrading your system:

• You can upgrade Empower 1154 options to Empower 2 options, with the exception of the Empower AQT option.

• You cannot upgrade any old Millennium32 options to Empower options. For Millennium32 options, you will need new licenses. Before you upgrade or install new licenses or options, uninstall the old Millennium32 options.

• Do not write-protect key disks.

3.4.1 Uninstalling ConnectionsAQT for Systems

If you have installed one of the following versions of ConnectionsAQT for Systems, you must uninstall it before you uninstall the existing software. The Millennium32 v4.0 or Empower 1154 uninstaller does not cleanly uninstall these applications. The affected ConnectionsAQT products are:

• Connections AQT for Alliance Systems

• ConnectionsAQT for Acquity Systems

• Connections AQT for Satins

To uninstall the ConnectionsAQT systems application:

1. Log in to the operating system as an administrator.

2. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

3. In Add/Remove Programs, scroll down the list of applications until you locate the ConnectionsAQT application.

4. Click on the application and then click Remove. Follow the prompts in the uninstaller.

5. Repeat Steps 2-4 for all installed ConnectionsAQT for Systems applications.

3.4.2 Uninstalling Millennium32 v4.0 or Empower 1154 Options

To uninstall a Millennium32 v4.0 or Empower 1154 option:

1. Log in to the Personal workstation as an administrator.

2. Insert the appropriate option key disk into the disk drive of the Personal workstation that currently has the option.

3. Click Start > Run.

4. At the Run dialog box, type disk drive:\Setup.exe, and then click OK.

5. At the Option Setup dialog box, click OK.

6. At the Option Already Installed message box, click OK.

7. At the Setup message box, click OK to close the message box, and then remove the key disk.

3.5 Exporting the Database

Use the appropriate export utility to export your database:

• If you are upgrading from Millennium32, use the Empower Upgrade CD (Section 3.5.1).

• If you are upgrading from Empower 1154, use the Empower Installation DVD (Section 3.5.2).

3.5.1 Exporting the Millennium32 Database

Use the Empower Upgrade CD to export the Millennium32 database. This will ensure that your database is preserved properly and then restored correctly when you import it during the installation process.

To export the database:

1. Browse to the CD location, and then double-click Exportsetup.exe.

2. At the Welcome page (Figure 3-2), click Next.

3. The Empower Export page appears (Figure 3-3). Click OK.

4. At the Oracle Database and Raw Data Export page (Figure 3-4), select the default location (WatersDBexport) or browse to an alternate location for the database export (for example, C:\For_Upgrade). Click Next.

Note: This screen may be minimized in the task bar. If the Oracle Database and Raw Data Empower page does not appear, click the minimized screen in the task bar.

Do not include any spaces in the directory name or path. If you choose an export location that does not have enough space, or if you include a space in the path name, an error message appears. If you do this a second time, another error message appears and the installer will exit.

5. Empower Setup exports the database and data files. When Setup has successfully finished exporting the database and raw data files, the Install Wizard Completed dialog box appears (Figure 3-5). Click Finish.

6. Another Install Shield Wizard Completed dialog box appears (Figure 3-6). Click Finish to exit the wizard.

7. Backup the export file.

8. Do one of the following:

• If you are upgrading to Empower 2 and changing computers, go to Section 3.8, Installing the Empower Software.

• If you are upgrading to Empower 2 and using the same computer, go to Section 3.6, Uninstalling Millennium32 or Empower 1154 Software.

3.5.2 Exporting the Empower 1154 Database

Use the Empower DVD to export the Empower 1154 database. This will ensure that your database is preserved properly and then restored correctly when you import it during the installation process.

To export the database:

1. Insert the Empower DVD into the DVD drive. The Empower Software Install Products page appears momentarily.

Note: If the setup procedure does not start automatically, browse to the Autorun directory on the DVD and double-click Autorun.exe to launch the Empower 2 Installation Interface.

2. At the Welcome page (Figure 3-2), click Next.

3. The Empower Personal Export page appears (Figure 3-3). Click Yes.

6. The Install Shield Wizard Completed dialog box appears (Figure 3-11). Click Finish to exit the wizard. Click OK to close the message box.

7. Backup the export file.

8. Do one of the following:

• If you are upgrading to Empower 2 and changing computers, go to Section 3.8, Installing the Empower Software.

• If you are upgrading to Empower 2 and using the same computer, continue with Section 3.6, Uninstalling Millennium32 or Empower 1154 Software.

3.6 Uninstalling Millennium32 or Empower 1154 Software

Use the information in this section if you are upgrading to Empower 2 on the same computer that you previously used for Millennium32 v4.0 or Empower 1154.

If you are upgrading by installing Empower 2 on a different computer, go to Section 3.8, Installing the Empower Software.

STOPAttention: To preserve your system information, backup the instsrv.dat file before uninstalling the software. See Section 3.3.2.

To uninstall Millennium32 or Empower 1154 software:

1. Stop the Waters DHCP Server Service:

a. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.

b. Right-click Waters DHCP Server, and then select Stop.

2. Use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall the software.

3. Reboot the computer.

3.7 Upgrading the Operating System

Use the information in this section if you are upgrading to Empower 2 on the same computer that you previously used for Millennium32 v4.0 or Empower 1154.

If it is necessary to upgrade your operating system, do so now. If not, continue with Section 3.8, Installing the Empower Software.

After you upgrade your operating system, you must verify that Millennium32 references are not in the path.

To clean up the path:

1. Select Settings > Control Panel > System.

2. Click the Advanced tab.

3. Click Environment Variables.

4. Select Path in System Variables, and then click Edit.

5. Delete any Millennium paths.

6. Click Apply, and then click OK. Continue with the next section, Installing the Empower Software.

3.8 Installing the Empower Software

The Empower software is installed from the Empower DVD. If the workstation where you are installing Empower does not have a DVD drive, share the DVD drive of a network-accessible workstation and map a drive to the share from the workstation where you will be installing Empower.

To install Empower software:

1. If you are changing to a different computer, copy the database export file that was saved by the export utility to the new computer before you install Empower.

3. Click Install Empower Software to access the Install Products page (Figure 3-13).

4. Click Empower Personal. The installation wizard starts.

5. At the Welcome page, click Next.

6. At the Customer Information page, enter a user name and organization. Enter your serial number in the Serial Number field, and then click Next.

7. At the License Agreement page, select “I accept the terms in the license agreement” and then click Next.

8. At the Setup Type page, select Custom if you want to install the software on a drive other than C:. Otherwise, leave Typical selected and then click Next.

Note: If you are performing a custom installation, continue with Section 3.8.1, Finishing a Custom Installation.

9. At the Import Database into Empower page, select Yes to import the database you previously exported. Browse to the location of the export file, and then click Next.

10. At the Ready to Install the Program page, click Install to start the installation.

The Empower Setup wizard installs the Empower and Oracle program files on the hard drive and creates a new database using data from the original database. This can take several minutes. Allow the installer to continue through all the screens of the Universal Installer, until Empower has completed installing Oracle.

11. At the Empower Instrument Control Options Pack, Setup selection page, select “Install new instrument software, or upgrade existing installation(s)” and then click Next.

12. At the Empower Instrument Control Options Pack, Instrument selection page, select the applicable instruments, and then click Next. If no instruments were selected, a “Nothing to do” dialog box appears. Click Yes to continue.

13. When the Confirm Installation of Software dialog box appears, click Yes to continue.

14. At the Empower Instrument Control Options Pack, Setup complete page, click Finish.

15. At the Install Shield Wizard complete page, click Finish. Click Yes at the next dialog box to restart the workstation. Continue with Section 3.9, Completing the Upgrade.

3.8.1 Finishing a Custom Installation

To finish a custom installation (if you selected Custom in step 7 of Section 3.8):

1. At the Custom Setup page (Figure 3-14), specify the installation drives for the application. By default, all locations point to the C: drive. To designate drives other than C:, click an icon (for example, Empower Oracle Files and Database), and then click the Change Feature Location button.

2. At the Change Current Destination Folder page (Figure 3-15), select the desired drive, and then click OK to return to the Custom Setup page. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for all feature locations.

3. After specifying the application installation locations, you can choose whether or not to have the Empower Instrument Control Options Pack (ICOP) start automatically at the end of the Empower installation. Perform one of the following actions:

• Select No to prevent ICOP from starting automatically after installation, and then click Next.

• Select Yes to start ICOP automatically after installation, and then click Next.

4. At the Import Database into Empower page, select Yes to import the database you previously exported. Browse to the location of the export file, and then click Next.


The Empower Setup wizard installs the Empower and Oracle program files on the hard drive and creates a new database using data from the original database. This can several minutes. Allow the installer to continue through all the screens of the Universal Installer, until Empower has completed installing Oracle.

6. If you selected Yes in step 3, continue with the following steps:

a. At the Empower Instrument Control Options Pack, Setup selection page, select “Install new instrument software, or upgrade existing installation(s)” and then click Next.

b. At the Empower Instrument Control Options Pack, Instrument selection page, select the applicable instruments, and then click Next. (If no instruments were selected, a “Nothing to do” dialog box appears.) Click Yes to continue.

c. At the Empower Instrument Control Options Pack, Setup complete page, click Finish. Continue with step 7.

7. At the Installation is Complete page, click “Yes, I want to restart my computer now,” and then click Finish.

8. If your computer contains a busLAC/e card and you are prompted to install a driver for it, click Yes and follow the prompts.

9. Continue with Section 3.9.

3.9 Completing the Upgrade

To complete the upgrade process:

1. Install the Empower base package key and options.

2. Restore your instsrv.dat file (if necessary).

3. Update the database.

4. Change the raw data path.

5. Delete the Millennium node (if applicable).

6. Verify the installed files.

3.9.1 Installing the Empower Personal Base Package Key and Options

About Empower Key Disks

Key disks are required for installation, uninstallation, and reinstallation of the Empower licenses and options. If you need to transfer a license or option from one Empower Personal to another, you must uninstall it from the original Personal workstation before

you install it in a new Personal workstation. Install licenses and options in the following order:

1. Base key (includes 5 named user licenses)

2. Named User Licenses (if you purchased additional licenses)

3. System Licenses

4. Options

The number of allowed named users is based on the number of Named User Licenses you have installed. You can create a number of accounts equal to the number of Named User Licenses you have purchased.

The number of allowed online systems (up to a maximum of 4) is based on the number of System Licenses you have installed.

Note: You cannot install an option intended for an Enterprise system or Workgroup system on an Empower Personal workstation, nor can you install an option intended for an Empower Personal workstation on an Enterprise system or Workgroup system.

Once you have installed an option using the procedures in this section, the option is enabled for all projects. You can disable the option for specific projects (see “Modifying project properties” in the Empower Help).

Installing the Base Package Key

Record the serial number of the Base Package Key prior to installing the key disk. You will be prompted to supply this information during installation so that it can be incorporated into the Verify Files output.

To install the Empower Personal Base Package Key on a Personal workstation:

1. Log in to the Personal workstation (where you installed Empower) as an administrator user.

2. Insert the 3.5-inch Empower Personal key disk into the disk drive.

5. At the Empower Option Setup dialog box (Figure 3-16), click OK to install the Empower Personal Base Package Key.

Note: Allow several minutes for the Empower Option Setup dialog box to appear while the Empower key disk is being read onto your hard disk.

6. At the Enter Serial Number dialog box, enter your serial number. This information appears in the verification file. If no number is entered, a blank line appears in the Verify Files output.

7. When installation is complete, the Empower Option message box appears. Click OK to close the message box.

Installing Empower Options

To install the Empower options:

1. Log in to the Personal workstation as an administrator user.

2. Insert the Empower Option key disk into the disk drive.



5. After a few minutes, the Empower Option Setup dialog box appears. Ensure that the name of the option that is being installed is correct, and then click OK.

STOPImportant: If did not previously record the serial number that is on the disk, DO NOT remove the disk from the drive to view the number. Leave the serial number blank and click OK.

STOPAttention: Record the serial numbers of your options prior to installation. You will be prompted to supply this information during installation so that it can be incorporated into the Verify Files output.

6. Perform one of these actions:

• If the option was not previously installed, an Empower Option message box appears after successful installation. Click OK to close the message box.

• If the option is already installed on your Empower Personal workstation, an Empower Option message box appears. Click Cancel to close the message box.

• If the option is already installed on a different Empower Personal workstation, a Setup message box appears. Click OK to close the message box. To remove the option from an Empower Personal workstation, see Section 3.4, Uninstalling Options.


8. Repeat steps 1 to 7 for each option.

Restoring an Option Sample Project

To restore an option sample project from the Empower DVD, see “Restoring projects” in the Empower Help. You can use the option sample project files as examples.

3.9.2 Restoring Your instsrv.dat File

Use the information in this section only if you are upgrading to Empower 2 on a computer that had previous versions of the software on it. You will need to restore the instsrv.dat file that you backed up in Section 3.3.2.

To restore your instsrv.dat file:

1. Copy the instsrv.dat file you backed up before you started the Empower installation/export procedure.

2. Paste the file into the Empower\InstrumentServer directory.

3. At the Confirm File Replace dialog box, click Yes.

3.9.3 Updating the Database

To update the database:

1. Log in to Empower using an Administrator account.

2. At the Empower Update Database Dialog box, confirm that you want to update your database. Click OK. The database and projects will update.

Note: The update may take a long time to complete, depending on the number and size of your projects.

3. You will be prompted to select the time zone to use for your computer. Select the correct time zone for your location and click OK.

3.9.4 Changing the Raw Data Path

Use the information in this section only if you are upgrading from Millennium32 to Empower 2.

To complete the upgrade from Millennium32 to Empower2, change the raw data path for the upgraded projects and delete the old raw data path.

To change the raw data path for upgraded projects:

1. In Configuration Manager, shift-click to highlight all of the projects that were upgraded, then right-click, and then select Move Project Data.

2. In the New Raw Data Path, select X:\Empower\Projects from the drop-down list (where X = the path chosen during the Empower installation).

Note: Do not select "Copy raw data to new path."

Click OK. Enter any comments, if necessary.

3. At the Message Center message, click OK.

To change the raw data path and delete the old raw data path:

1. In Configuration Manager, select View > Manage Raw Data Files.

2. In the Default Raw Data Path drop-down list, change the path from X:\Millennium\Projects (where X in this case is the original raw data path) to X:\Empower\Projects (where X in this case is the path chosen during the Empower installation).

3. After you choose the new raw data path as the default, highlight X:\Millennium\Projects and click Remove Raw Data Path to delete the Millennium\Projects raw data path. Click OK on the Remove Raw Data path message.

4. Click OK to exit from Manage Raw Data Files. Enter any comments, if necessary.

STOPImportant: The time zone you select will be applied to ALL existing database date fields.

3.9.5 Deleting the Millennium32 Node

Use this information only if you are upgrading by changing computers.

To delete the Millennium node:

1. In Configuration Manager, select Empower Nodes.

2. Select the row of the Millennium node (it should have an Empower Node Type of None).

3. Right-click and select Delete.

The node and any chromatographic systems associated with it should be deleted.

3.9.6 Verifying Installed Files

The Empower Setup wizard creates an Empower program folder in the Start menu. The Empower program folder contains:

• Empower – Starts the Empower software and displays the Empower Login dialog box. After you log in, the program allows you to select one of several Empower applications. For details, see “Starting and exiting from Empower” in the Empower Help.

• Empower Installation Log – Provides information about the current installation.

• Remove Waters Instrument Component Software – Provides a way to uninstall instrument component software. (This appears in the menu list whether or not ICOP instruments are installed.)

• Verify Files – Verifies the integrity of the Empower software files on your hard disk.

Viewing the Installation Log

The Installation Log contains information about your Empower installations. You can read the log file to review your installation choices. In case of a partial or unsuccessful installation, you can review the Installation Log to check for errors.

To view the Installation Log:

1. Click Start > Programs > Empower > Installation Log. The program displays the Empower.log file in Notepad.

2. Review the contents of the Installation Log file. The most recent installation is at the end of the file.

3. Click File > Exit.

Using the File Verification Utility

The File Verification utility checks the integrity of the installed Empower program, data, and database files.

Note: Log in to the newly installed Empower software at least once before you use the File Verification utility. This ensures that your database has been properly upgraded.

After installation and first login, use the File Verification utility to verify the Empower program and data files only (not the database files):

• As part of your installation qualification if you purchased the Empower Qualification option

• To ensure that the Empower files have not changed since installation

To run the File Verification utility:

1. Click Start > Programs > Empower > Verify Files.

2. The File Verification utility compares the installed Empower files checksum with a previously stored checksum number, creates a File Verification Results log, and opens the Checksum.txt file in a WordPad window.

3. Review the contents of the file. You can print or save a copy of the results.

4. Click File > Exit.

3.10 Checking for Empower Service Packs

Waters periodically releases service packs to address existing issues or to provide enhanced functionality. These service packs are available for download from the Waters Elite website and should be installed according to the instructions contained in their respective Release Notes. For those customers who require physical media, note the part number from the web site and contact your local subsidiary to place an order.

This completes the Empower software upgrade procedure for an Empower Personal workstation.

Chapter 4Upgrading an Enterprise Server or Primary Workgroup

Refer to this chapter when upgrading to Empower 2 software.

If you are upgrading from a pre-Millennium32 v4.0 database, you must backup your projects and libraries from the old database. You can then restore these projects when you install a new Empower 2 server. You will need to recreate your system objects (users, nodes, systems, etc.) on the new server.

The Waters Empower DVD contains Oracle software (Oracle 10g™) and Empower software. After you upgrade your server, follow the procedures in this chapter to perform the standard installation of the Oracle software and the Empower software.

The Empower Upgrade CD contains the System Object Export Utility, which you can use to export only your system objects from your old database.

The System Object Export Utility provides an automated means to quickly migrate your existing user information, acquisition servers and systems, system policy settings, audit trails, messages, libraries, and plate types to Empower 2. Project information is not included in this export. After the system object export and Empower 2 installation are complete, you can selectively restore projects using the Configuration Manager Restore Projects wizard. System Object Export is the only supported direct upgrade path from Millennium32 V. 4.0. This is the recommended method for upgrading your database.

You can also choose to export your entire database. Exporting the entire database is a manual procedure, and requires more time to complete. It also requires more disk space, as the database export files are much larger than the system object export files.

4.1 Server Planning

4.1.1 Overview

The database server runs two applications:

• WatersService – Responsible for writing raw data files from Empower nodes, copying raw data from project to project (through the Empower application), and creating new projects.

• Oracle Database – Stores methods, audit trails, and specific raw data file parameters (the data points are stored as external files controlled by WatersService).

The Empower Server installation program reads the amount of physical memory that your system contains, then configures the Oracle initialization parameters based on available resources.

The installation program assumes that the server will be exclusively used as the Empower database server. If other applications will be running on the server, you may need to adjust the initialization parameters accordingly.

4.1.2 Network Considerations

A domain-based network infrastructure is required for the Empower Enterprise/Workgroup system. In addition, all Empower related computers (clients, LACEs, and servers) must be synchronized to a time server.

In a Windows 2000/2003 based-domain, the domain controllers are automatically configured to act as time servers to the domain.

To maximize uptime and minimize network environment related issues, Waters recommends that you follow these guidelines:

• All Empower related accounts, computer and user, should reside within the same domain.

• If you are using real-time virus scanning, exclude all Empower-related folders and their sub-directories. Some real-time virus scanners mistake normal Empower functionality for virus activity and this can cause problems with data buffering.

Group Policy Objects

Group Policy Objects (GPOs) are used by System Administrators to define and enforce settings in an active Directory network. Administrators are able to apply settings to users and computers based on locally defined group and site membership criteria. Before defining GPOs in an Empower network, keep in mind that Empower is a distributed chromatography data acquisition system which relies on remote access and DCOM in

order to carry out its activities. Empower makes use of information stored in the database and in individual flat files, such as instsrv.dat (instrument configuration information) and channel_id.dat (actual raw data file).

If GPOs are used in an Empower network, Waters recommends that you follow these guidelines:

• Place Empower nodes in their own Organization Unit (OU). Define GPOs for that OU which minimize allowable changes; for example, test Microsoft hot fixes and service packs before applying them to the environment.

• Grant Administrators full access to the registry and file system so that they can properly install software.

• Limit changes to the file system protections expected by the Empower application.

GPOs may interfere with successful Empower operation. For example, data buffering may occur if the anonymous access to the raw data share is altered or the editors for the COM instruments may not operate properly if the access control list for the HTML directories is altered.

4.1.3 Memory Considerations

The server in an Enterprise system or Workgroup requires sufficient memory for Oracle10g and Empower software to operate. The amount of required memory depends on the number of applications, users, and the operating system. The largest quantity of memory is used by Oracle. When Oracle initializes, it creates a space in memory for most of the Oracle functions, called the SGA (for more information about the SGA, see the Oracle documentation or your database administrator). The server must have adequate memory, and the memory must be configured correctly. The amount of required memory depends on the number of client and LAC/E32 computers, users, chromatograms per project, and number of integrated peaks per channel.

The virtual memory on the server should be set to at least four times the amount of installed physical memory (see Section 5.1.1, Changing the Page File Size).

4.1.4 Disk Space Considerations

Each Workgroup or Enterprise system requires sufficient disk space for Oracle10g (database) and Empower software (see Table 4-1).

The various software components should be installed on multiple drives to maximize performance and the ability to recover from disk failures. Table 4-1 contains the minimum requirements at installation. However, you must also account for additional disk space when the system is operational.

The following considerations should be made when sizing drives for future use.

Empower Program Files

• Empower and Oracle application files – Fixed size at installation, approximately 1.6 GB.

• Archive log files – 1 GB each, allow space for 50 logs. This value is based on the number of database changes (new chromatograms, results, calibration curves, methods or changes to existing methods). You should have at least enough disk space to hold a day’s worth of archive logs. The number of archive log files maintained on the server depends on how often a database is backed up and the overall activity. If you are performing backups on a daily basis, the log files will be deleted as they are backed up.

Note: There are two locations for archive logs. Each contains a full set of logs. Archive logs are essential for recovering databases. If you fill up the space for archive logs, the database will hang waiting for more space to copy the logs.

Empower Raw Data files

• Default project raw data files – Fixed size at installation, approximately 1.0 GB.

• Chromatography raw data files – Variable, based approximately on sample rate times run time times number of samples. PDA and MS files are bigger because wavelength/mass range must be included. The total space requirement is based on how often you archive projects and how many systems are creating raw data files.

Note: Raw data files can grow very quickly. Hundreds of GB may be needed. If you use up too much space, you can archive older projects to regain space on the raw data drive.

Estimating the Size of Your Current Database

Before you begin the upgrade procedure, you need to estimate the size of your current system, user, and index tablespaces in order to estimate the size of your upgraded database. You will need at least this much disk space for the new database. Waters recommends you have double the free space on the drive intended to hold the database tablespace files in order to successfully upgrade the database and provide room to expand.

To estimate the size of your tablespaces:

1. In Windows Explorer, browse to the location of your database datafiles.

2. Sum the size of the files, and then double that value.

3. Compare this value with the amount of free disk space on the database drive.

Empower Database

The database datafiles are configured to autoextend. As projects, raw data files, and results are created, the initial database datafile autoextends as necessary to store all information.

Most information stored in the database consists of results. The actual tablespace used for each result is based on the number of integrated peaks (named or unknowns). Additional space is required when the system Suitability or Pattern Match option is enabled, or the data is from a 3D detector and additional processing is requested (for example, a PDA channel with multi-pass purity enabled).

4.1.5 Changing Operating Systems

If you are upgrading the operating system, Waters Corporation recommends you perform the following tasks:

1. Perform a full back up of the database.

2. Back up all projects.

3. Export the system objects using the Empower Upgrade CD.

4. Uninstall Millennium32 V4.0 or Empower 1154 software.

5. Upgrade the operating system (see your Microsoft Windows documentation).

6. Install Empower 2 software with the import of system objects.

4.2 Upgrading to Empower 2 Using System Object Export

Use this procedure to upgrade directly from Millennium32 v4.0 or Empower 1154. The System Object Export utility exports all database object information with the exception of projects. To complete the upgrade, projects must be backed up from the previous version of the software, and then restored to Empower 2.

This upgrade path consists of the following tasks:

1. Use the Backup Wizard in Configuration Manager to backup all projects in the database to a neutral location.

2. Use the Export CD to export the database system objects.

3. Copy the export file to the new server (if you are changing servers; otherwise the file can remain where it was generated).

4. Uninstall Millennium32 v4.0 or Empower 1154 (if you will be using the same server for Empower 2).

Note: If you will be using a new server for Empower 2, you can leave the old server up until such time as the upgrade is complete and you have verified that all of your previous information is accessible. To maintain compliance with Oracle licensing, the Millennium32 v4.0 or Empower 1154 software must be uninstalled prior to running your Empower 2 server in Production mode.

5. Install Empower 2 from the DVD, choosing the option “Create a database into which system objects will be imported.”

6. Complete the upgrade.

4.2.1 Backing Up Projects to a Neutral Location

Before exporting the system objects, log in to Empower, access the Configuration Manager, and backup all projects you wish to upgrade. The project backups should be stored in an accessible, neutral location (a secure location that will not be deleted when Millennium32 v4.0 or Empower 1154 is uninstalled).

STOPAttention: Before installing or upgrading any hardware or software, shut down the database and perform a full backup of your hard drives (see the instructions provided by the manufacturer of your computer). If errors occur during the upgrade procedure, you can restore the original database from the backup.

STOPAttention: Ensure that all users are logged off the database and all acquisition is complete before you start the database upgrade.

4.2.2 Exporting System Objects

To export the system objects from your Millennium32 v4.0 or Empower 1154 database:

1. Log in to the database server as an administrator user.

2. Insert the Export Upgrade CD into the CD drive.

3. Browse the contents of the CD and double-click ExportSetup.exe.

4. At the Empower Export Welcome page, click Next.

5. At the Empower Export page, click OK to export the current database system objects.

Note: The next page of the installer might open minimized in the Task Bar. To continue with the upgrade, maximize this page.

6. At the Export System Objects User Name page, enter the name of the Oracle user who has rights to export the database, and then click Next. (Typically, this user is the Oracle System user account.)

7. At the Export System Objects Password page, enter the password for the Oracle user account entered on the previous page, and then click Next.

Note: The default password for the Oracle system user in Millennium32 v4.0 and Empower 1154 was manager.

8. At the Export System Objects Export Destination Directory page, click Next to accept the default location or click Browse to specify a different location. The database export will start.

Note: The export folder will be automatically created, as long as the user running the export utility has write access to the specified location.

9. At the InstallShield Wizard Completed page, click Finish.

10. At the second InstallShield Wizard Completed page, click Finish.

When the export is complete, the C:\WatersSchema directory (Figure 4-1) contains the export file (WatersSchema.dmp) and a log of the export (SchemaExport.log). Waters recommends that you copy the WatersSchema directory and the project backup folders to an archive location.

If you will be installing Empower 2 on a different server, copy the WatersSchema directory to an accessible drive on the Empower 2 server.

4.2.3 Uninstalling the Empower 1154 or Millennium32 Software

To uninstall the previous version of the software:

1. In the Command Prompt window, remove the database instance by entering the command C:\> oradim -delete -sid WAT5 and pressing Enter.

Note: For Empower 1154, the default SID is WAT5. For Millennium32 v4.0, the default SID is MIL3. Verify the SID by accessing Services and examining the OracleSIDService value. If you customized the SID during the Empower 1154 installation, use the appropriate SID in place of WAT5.

2. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.

3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

4. Select Empower or Millennium32, and then click Change/Remove.

5. Click Yes at all the uninstall dialog boxes that appear.

6. At the Uninstall Complete dialog box, click OK to restart the server.

STOPAttention: This procedure is necessary only if you intend to install Empower 2 on the same server that ran the previous version of the software. If you are moving to a new server, the old server can remain up until the upgrade is complete and verified.

7. In Windows Explorer, delete the mirrored control file ctl2wat5.ora (or ctl2mil3.ora) and the redo log files. The default location is the raw-data-drive:\empower (or raw-data-drive:\millennium) directory.

8. Delete all files in the \empower\database or millennium\database directory. The default location is the database-drive:\software\database directory.

4.2.4 Uninstalling Oracle

If you installed Oracle separately, use the following procedure to uninstall Oracle. If Oracle was installed as part of the previous Millennium32 or Empower installation, proceed with Section 4.2.5, Installing Empower 2.

To uninstall Oracle software:

1. Stop the Oracle Services:

a. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools.

b. Select Component Services > Services.

c. Stop all Oracle services by right-clicking on each Oracle service and selecting Stop.

d. Disable the Oracle Listener Service by right-clicking on the service, selecting Properties, and changing the Startup type to Disabled.

2. Select Start > Programs > Oracle Installation Products > Universal Installer.

3. Uninstall as follows:

a. Click Deinstall Products....

b. Click the + sign by Independent Products and select all items.

c. Click the + sign by OraHome91 and select Oracle9i.

d. Click Remove.

e. At the Confirmation dialog box, click Yes.

f. At the Inventory dialog box, click Close.

g. At the Welcome dialog box, click Exit.

h. At the Exit dialog box, click Yes.

STOPAttention: Do not delete the Empower\Projects (or Millennium\Projects) directory on the raw data drive.

STOPAttention: This procedure is only necessary if you intend to install Empower 2 on the same server that ran the previous version of the software. If you are moving to a new server, the old server can remain up until the upgrade is complete and verified.

i. Restart the server.

4. Log in as an administrator and open the Registry Editor:

a. Select Start > Run.

b. Type regedit.exe, and then click OK.

5. Select the Oracle key (directory), HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SOFTWARE, ORACLE, and then delete the Oracle key.

6. At the Confirm Key Delete message, click Yes.

7. Close the Registry Editor by clicking Registry > Exit.

8. From Windows Explorer, delete the Oracle folder on the operating system drive under the Program directory.

9. Restart the server.

10. From Windows Explorer, delete the Oracle folder on the program_drive.

4.2.5 Installing Empower 2

To start the installation using the wizard:

1. Insert the Empower DVD into the DVD drive. The Empower 2 Software Installation page appears.


STOPAttention: Incorrectly editing the registry can severely damage your system. At the very least, you should back up any valued data on the computer before making changes to the registry.

STOPImportant: By default, the Empower 2 installer installs both Oracle 10g (including the 10.1.0.4 patchset) and Empower 2. If your site has its own Oracle license and prefers to install Oracle 10g as a separate application, consider these installation issues:

• Install Oracle 10g software only (without a database) prior to installing Empower 2.• The Oracle 10.1.0.4 patchset must be manually applied after Empower 2 is installed,

according to the instructions provided by Oracle. At the time of release, the only supported Oracle 10g patchset is 10.1.0.4.

• The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Oracle\NLS_Lang registry key value must be changed to AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1.

• During installation, you will be asked if you wish to use your installed Oracle software. Select Yes and supply the location of the Oracle program files.

3. Click Empower Enterprise.

4. At the Empower 2 Enterprise Software page, click Install Empower Server. The Install Shield wizard starts.

8. At the Custom Setup page (Figure 4-4), specify the installation drives for the application. By default, all locations point to the C: drive.

To designate drives other than C:, click an icon (for example, Oracle Application), and then click Change Feature Location.

Note: Oracle Application refers to the Oracle program files. Empower Oracle Database specifies the location for the Empower Oracle database datafiles. Empower Projects specifies the location for the raw data files. Empower Program files specifies the location for the Empower program files.


STOPAttention: Waters recommends that you DO NOT install all components on drive C:. For best performance and fault tolerance reasons, spread the components across multiple drives, as recommended in the rest of this procedure.

10. After specifying the application installation locations, click Next.

11. At the Empower Database page (Figure 4-6), select “Create an empty database into which system objects will be imported,” and then click Next.

12. At the Import System Objects page (Figure 4-7), enter the path to the location of the folder containing the export file, and then click Next.

13. At the Database Options page (Figure 4-8), specify the locations of the archive and mirror directories by changing the drive letter of the provided paths, and then click Next.

Note: Typically, the mirror directory (containing mirrored controlfiles and redo logs) and the first Archive directory are installed to the raw data drive. The second Archive directory is installed to the program file drive.

STOPImportant: If you are installing a server with less than 4 physical drives (such as a workgroup Primary PC), the path to the EmpowerMirrorDB directory should be to a drive other than the drive selected for the Empower Oracle Database in step 9. If the location of the mirrored files is on the same physical drive as the database, database recovery may be incomplete or, in some cases, impossible.

14. At the Oracle Database Domain Name and SID page (Figure 4-9), enter the Oracle Service Identifier (SID) and the Oracle Database Domain Name, and then click Next. The database domain name typically consists of computername.domain (for example, EMPSRVR1.WATERS.COM, where the computer name is EMPSRVR1 and the domain is WATERS.COM).

Note: The database SID can be any combination of alphanumeric characters, up to 8 characters. However, it must start with WAT to automatically populate the Empower 2 database field in the login window.

STOPImportant: Waters recommends you change only the drive letter of these database options, and keep the default path. Be sure to record this information with your system configuration records.

15. At the Ready to Install the Program page, click Install to start the program file installation.

16. When the installation is complete, restart the server and continue with Section 4.4, Completing the Upgrade.

4.3 Upgrading to Empower 2 Using the Complete Database Export

Use this procedure to upgrade directly from Empower 1154.

Note: This is not the supported path to upgrade from Millennium32 v4.0 to Empower 2. To upgrade from Millennium32 v4.0, use the System Objects Export utility on the Empower Upgrade CD.

STOPAttention: Before installing or upgrading any hardware or software, shut down the database and perform a full backup of your hard drives (see the instructions provided by the manufacturer of your computer). If errors occur during the upgrade procedure, you can restore the original database from the backup.

Waters Corp. recommends backing up all projects and libraries before continuing with this procedure.

6. Import the database.

4.3.1 Backing Up Projects to a Neutral Location

Before exporting the database, log into Empower, access Configuration Manager, and backup all projects you wish to upgrade. The project backups should be stored in an accessible, neutral location (a secure location that will not be deleted when Empower 1154 is uninstalled).

4.3.2 Exporting the Entire Empower 1154 Database

To export the entire Empower 1154 database:

1. Open a Command Prompt window and change the path to wherever you want to locate the export file. (For example, C:\DBexport, where the folder DBexport was created as the backup location.)

Note: The path must already exist and there must be sufficient room on the drive.

2. Enter the command backup_drive:\DBexport> exp in the Command Prompt window and press Enter.

STOPAttention: Ensure that all users are logged off the database and all acquisition is complete before you start the database upgrade.

The database export begins. The size of your database affects the time needed to export the database. The export is complete when the Export Terminated Successfully message appears in the Command Prompt window.

Copy the export file and all raw data folders to an archive location.

4.3.3 Copying the Export File to the Empower 2 Server

To install Empower 2 on a different server, copy the export file to an accessible location on the Empower 2 server.

4.3.4 Uninstalling Empower 1154

Uninstalling ConnectionsAQT for Systems

If you have installed one of the following versions of ConnectionsAQT for systems, you must uninstall it before you uninstall the existing software. The Empower 1154 uninstaller does not cleanly uninstall these applications. The affected ConnectionsAQT products are:

Uninstalling a Previous Version of the Software

To uninstall the previous version of the software:

1. In the Command Prompt window, remove the database instance by entering the command C:\> oradim -delete -sid WAT5 and pressing Enter.

2. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel. The Control Panel appears.

3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

4. Select Empower, and then click Change/Remove.

5. Click Yes at all the uninstall dialog boxes that appear.

6. At the Uninstall Complete dialog box, click OK to restart the server.

7. In Windows Explorer, delete the mirrored control file ctl2wat5.ora and the redo log files. The default location is the raw-data-drive:\empower directory.

8. Delete all files in the \empower\database directory. The default location is the database-drive:\empower\database directory.

4.3.5 Uninstalling Oracle

If you installed Oracle separately, use the following procedure to uninstall Oracle. If Oracle was installed as part of the previous Empower installation, proceed with Section 4.3.6, Installing Empower 2.

To uninstall the Oracle software:

1. Stop the Oracle Services:

a. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools.

b. Select Component Services > Services.

c. Stop all Oracle services by right-clicking on each Oracle service and selecting Stop.

d. Disable the Oracle Listener Service by right-clicking on the service, selecting Properties, and changing the Startup type to Disabled.

2. Select Start > Programs > Oracle Installation Products > Universal Installer.

STOPAttention: This procedure is necessary only if you intend to install Empower 2 on the same server that ran the previous version of the software. If you are moving to a new server, the old server can remain up until the upgrade is complete and verified.

STOPAttention: Do not delete the Empower\Projects directory on the raw data drive.

3. Uninstall as follows:

a. Click Deinstall Products....

b. Click the + sign by Independent Products and select all items.

c. Click the + sign by OraHome91 and select Oracle9i.

d. Click Remove.

e. At the Confirmation dialog box, click Yes.

f. At the Inventory dialog box, click Close.

g. At the Welcome dialog box, click Exit.

h. At the Exit dialog box, click Yes.

i. Restart the server.

4. Log in as an administrator and open the Registry Editor:

a. Select Start > Run.

b. Type regedit.exe, and then click OK.

5. Select the Oracle key (directory), HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SOFTWARE, ORACLE, and then delete the Oracle key.

6. At the Confirm Key Delete message, click Yes.

7. Close the Registry Editor by selecting Registry > Exit.

8. From Windows Explorer, delete the Oracle folder on the operating system drive under the Program directory.

9. Restart the server.

10. From Windows Explorer, delete the Oracle folder on the program_drive.

STOPAttention: Incorrectly editing the registry can severely damage your system. At the very least, you should back up any valued data on the computer before making changes to the registry.

4.3.6 Installing Empower 2

To start the installation using the wizard:

1. Insert the Empower DVD into the DVD drive. The Empower 2 Software Installation page appears.

4. At the Empower 2 Enterprise Software page, click Install Empower Server. The Install Shield wizard starts.




8. At the Custom Setup page (Figure 4-12), specify the installation drives for the application. By default, all locations point to the C: drive.

To designate drives other than C:, click an icon (for example, Oracle Application), and then click Change Feature Location.

STOPAttention: Waters recommends that you DO NOT install all components on drive C:. For best performance and fault tolerance reasons, spread the components across multiple drives, as recommended in the rest of this procedure.

Note: Oracle Application refers to the Oracle program files. Empower Oracle Database specifies the location for the Empower Oracle database datafiles. Empower Projects specifies the location for the raw data files. Empower Program files specifies the location for the Empower program files.

10. After specifying the application installation locations, click Next.

11. At the Empower Database page (Figure 4-14), select “Create an empty database into which you will import a full database,” and then click Next.

12. At the Database Options page (Figure 4-15), specify the locations of the archive and mirror directories by changing the drive letter of the provided paths, and then click Next.

Note: Typically, the mirror directory (containing mirrored controlfiles and redo logs) and the first Archive directory are installed to the raw data drive. The second Archive directory is installed to the program file drive.

STOPImportant: If you are installing a server with less than 4 physical drives (such as a workgroup Primary PC), the path to the EmpowerMirrorDB directory should be to a drive other than the drive selected for the Empower Oracle Database in step 9. If the location of the mirrored files is on the same physical drive as the database, database recovery may be incomplete or, in some cases, impossible.

13. At the Oracle Database Domain Name and SID page (Figure 4-16), enter the Oracle Service Identifier (SID) and the Oracle Database Domain Name, and then click Next. The database domain name typically consists of computername.domain (for example, EMPSRVR1.WATERS.COM, where the computer name is EMPSRVR1 and the domain is WATERS.COM)

Note: The database SID can be any combination of alphanumeric characters, up to 8 characters. However, it must start with WAT to automatically populate the Empower 2 database field in the login window.

STOPImportant: Waters recommends you change only the drive letter of these database options, and keep the default path. Be sure to record this information with your system configuration records.

14. At the Ready to Install the Program page, click Install to start the program file installation.

15. When the installation is complete, restart the server.

4.3.7 Importing the Database

To import the database:

1. Open a command prompt and change the path to the drive and directory containing the previous database export file.

2. Enter the command drive:\> imp, and then press Enter.

3. Respond to the prompts as follows:

Note: The import utility reports the warnings caused by the Oracle data dictionary that exist in both the import file and the new database. The import process should complete with no errors. When the import is complete, the password for the Oracle user (such as Sys, System) will be set to the same password used for the Empower 1154 database.

4.3.8 Updating Roles

The imported database roles must be updated for Empower 2.

To update the roles:

1. Click Start > Run and enter CMD.

2. At the C:> prompt, change the directory and path to the Empower\Script directory.

3. At the drive:\Empower\Script> prompt, enter sqlplus /nolog.

4. At the SQL> prompt, enter connect system.

5. At the Enter password: prompt, enter the Empower 1154 password for the Oracle System user (manager was default password for the Oracle System account in Empower 1154).

6. At the SQL> prompt, enter @roles.sql (Figure 4-17).

4.4 Completing the Upgrade

4.4.1 Configuring a Database Service Name

Use the following procedure to create a new service name or modify the existing database service name.

To configure a database service name:

1. Select Start > Programs > Oracle - Empower10g > Configuration and Migration Tools > Net Configuration Assistant.

2. At the Welcome page of the Net Configuration Assistant wizard, select Local Net Service Name configuration, and then click Next.

3. At the Net Service Name Configuration page, ensure the Add is selected, and then click Next.

4. At the Service Name page, enter the global database name (Figure 4-18), and then click Next. The global database name is the combination of the Oracle Service Identifier (SID) and the database domain name, as supplied during installation.

For example, if you supplied an SID of WAT6 and a database domain name of Empower1.Waters.com during installation, the global database name is WAT6.Empower1.Waters.com.

5. At the Select Protocols page, ensure that TCP/IP is selected, and then click Next.

6. At the TCP/IP Protocol page, enter either the host name or the TCP/IP address of the server in the Host Name field. Leave the default port selection at 1521, and then click Next.

7. At the Test page, select “Yes, perform a test,” and then click Next. The test is automatically performed. The test will fail with the ORA-01017 - invalid username/password error.

8. Click Change Login. In the Change Login dialog box, enter System in the username field and the appropriate password for the Oracle System account in the password field. Click OK.

Note: If you upgraded using the System Object Export/Import process, the password for the Oracle System account was reset to empower. If you upgraded using the full database import process, the password for the Oracle System account remains the same as it was for Empower 1154 (the default password was manager).

9. At the Net Service Name page, enter a name in the Net Service Name field, and then click Next.

Note: The name that you enter appears in the Database field of the Empower Login dialog box. When using a client with a LAC/E32Acquisition Server, the client and the LAC/E32 Acquisition Server must use the identical net service name.

10. At the Another Net Service Name? page, Select No, and then click Next.

11. Click Next until the Welcome page of the Oracle Net Configuration Assistant wizard appears, and then click Finish.

4.4.2 Configuring a Shared tnsnames.ora File

The Empower 2 client/LACE32 installer allows you to create an environmental variable named TNS_ADMIN. The value for this environmental variable is the path to the location of a shared folder containing a pre-configured tnsnames.ora file. Using this variable on clients and LACE32s removes the need to manually configure and maintain individual tnsnames.ora files on each computer. If you use this feature, be sure to place the tnsnames.ora file in a share on a server that must be accessible in order for your users to login to Empower 2.

STOPAttention: If you performed a full database import, and did not modify the Oracle system password from the 1154 default, the test will pass. If the test fails for any error other than ORA-01017, contact Waters Technical Support.

STOPImportant: Waters recommends the shared tnsnames.ora file be located in the \Empower\Projects directory, as this folder is shared with the appropriate security settings applied and must be available for normal Empower 2 functionality.

In order to use the TNS_ADMIN environment variable with Empower database servers running Windows 2003 Server, the default Local Security Policy must be modified as follows:

1. Log on to the Empower database server as an administrator.

2. Access Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy.

3. In the left hand tree, click Security Settings.

4. Double-click on the policy “Network Access: Allow Everyone permissions to apply to Anonymous,” and then select Enabled.

5. Click Apply, and then click OK.

6. Exit the Local Security Policy.

To configure a shared tnsnames.ora file:

1. On the Empower database server, locate the drive installed with the Oracle program files and browse to the Empower\Oracle\Oracle10g\Network\Admin directory.

2. Locate the tnsnames.ora file, right-click the file, and then click Copy.

Note: If you have more than one Empower Database server, add them to the tnsnames.ora file using the Net Configuration Assistant (see Section 4.4.1, Configuring a Database Service Name) prior to copying the tnsnames.ora file.

3. Browse to the raw data drive:\Empower\Projects directory and paste the tnsnames.ora file into the folder.

4.4.3 Configuring the Empower Projects Directory

STOPAttention: Waters recommends that the share be placed in the same directory that will hold Empower raw data. Custom directories may be used, but if so, the share permissions must be set as described in Section 4.4.3, Configuring the Empower Projects Directory.

STOPAttention: Configuring the Empower Projects directory by setting Waters_projects$ file access to “Read-Only Access for Everyone” and “Full Access for the System” is critical for security.

Configuring the Empower Projects Directory on Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2000 Advanced Server

To configure the Empower Projects directory for Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2000 Advanced Server:

1. Using Windows Explorer, select the \Empower\Projects folder from the data drive, right-click, and then select Sharing.

2. At the Sharing page of the Projects Properties dialog box, select Share this folder, enter Waters_Projects$ in the Share name text box (Figure 4-19), and then click Apply.

3. Set the security settings as follows:

a. Click the Security tab.

b. Clear “Allow inheritable permissions from parent to propagate to this object” (Figure 4-20).

c. At the Security message box, click Copy (Figure 4-21).

d. Select Everyone from the Name box and clear all permissions except Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, and Read.

e. Select System from the Name box and enable all permissions.

4. If System is not listed, add it as a user:

a. Click Add.

b. Scroll down the Name box and select System (Figure 4-22).

c. Click Add, and then click OK.

d. At the Security page of the Projects Properties dialog box, select System from the Name box and enable all permissions.

5. Apply the security settings to all Projects subdirectories as follows:

a. At the Security page of the Projects Properties dialog box (Figure 4-20), click Advanced.

b. At the Access Control Settings for Projects dialog box (Figure 4-23), click the Permissions tab, and then select “Reset permissions on all child objects and enable propagation of inheritable permissions.”

c. Ensure that “Allow inheritable permissions from parent to propagate to this object” is clear, and then click Apply.

d. At the Security message box, click Yes. The permissions are applied to all subdirectories of the Project directory.

e. Click OK to save the changes and close the Access Control Settings for Projects dialog box.

f. Click OK to exit the Project Properties dialog box.

Configuring the Empower Projects Directory on Windows 2003 Server

To configure the Empower Projects directory on Windows 2003 Server:

1. Using Windows Explorer, select the \Empower\Projects folder from the data drive, right-click, and then select Sharing.

2. At the Sharing tab of the Projects Properties dialog box, click Share this folder, enter Waters_Projects$ in the Share name text box (Figure 4-24), and then click Apply.

e. In the Permission entries table, remove the extra user accounts with the exception of the SYSTEM account as follows:

1. Click on the permission entry (for example, Name = CREATOR/OWNER) to highlight the row.

2. Click Remove.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for all permission entries except SYSTEM (Figure 4-28).

f. Add Everyone to the Permission entries as follows:

1. Click Add.

2. At the Select User, Computer, or Group dialog box (Figure 4-29), type everyone in the “Enter the object name to select” field, and then click OK.

Note: The appropriate domain must be listed in the “From this location” field. If the domain name does not appear by default, click the Locations tab and select it from the list. You must have domain administrator privileges to perform this action.

3. In the Permission entries table, select Everyone, and then click Edit.

4. In the Permission Entry for Projects dialog box, allow Traverse Folder / Execute File, List Folder / Read Data, Read Attributes, Read Extended Attributes and Read Permissions, and then click OK (Figure 4-30).

4.4.4 Installing Empower Licenses and Options

Key disks are required for installation, uninstallation, and reinstallation of the Empower licenses and options. If you need to transfer a license or option from one Empower server to another, you must uninstall it from the original Enterprise system before you install it in a new Enterprise system. Install licenses and options in the following order:

1. Base key

2. Named User Licenses

3. Concurrent Users (Workgroup only)

4. System Licenses

5. Options

Note: Empower 1154 licenses and options carry over during the upgrade process, except for AQT. All Millennium32 v4.0 licenses and options will no longer be valid. You will need to install an entire new set of licenses and options, including base licenses. For upgrades from Empower 1154, any new licenses or option types (such as systems or SDMS) will need to be installed as well.

The number of allowed named users in the database is based on the number of Named User Licenses you have installed. You can create a number of accounts equal to the number of Named User Licenses you have purchased. You install the licenses from any client, then install all options, and then set up your named accounts (up to the total number of Named User Licenses).

The number of allowed online systems in the database is based on the number of System Licenses you have installed.

Note: You cannot install an option intended for an Empower Enterprise system on a Workgroup or an Empower Personal system, nor can you install an option intended for a Workgroup or an Empower Personal system on an Empower Enterprise system.

For project-configurable options, once you have installed an option using the procedures in this section, the option is enabled for all projects. You can disable the option for specific projects (see “Modifying project properties” in the Empower Help).

Installing an Empower License or Option

Record the serial numbers on your key disks prior to installation. You will be prompted to supply this information during installation so that it can be incorporated into the Verify Files output.

Note: To install an Empower license or option, Empower must already be installed. You must also be able to contact the database. To ensure successful installation, Waters strongly recommends that Empower not be running during installation.

To install an Empower option:

1. Log in to the operating system as an administrator user.

2. Insert the Empower license or option disk into the disk drive on the server.

Note: Options can be installed directly at the server or from a client.

3. Select Start > Run.

4. At the Run dialog box, type the disk drive letter, then :\Setup.exe, and then click OK.

5. At the Empower Option Setup dialog box, ensure that the name of the option that is being installed is correct, and then click OK.

Note: Allow a few minutes for the Empower Option Setup dialog box to appear.

6. Perform one of the following tasks:

• If an Empower Option message box appears after successful installation because the option was not previously installed, click OK to close the message box.

• If an Empower Option message box appears because the option is already installed on your Enterprise system, click Cancel to close the message box.

• If a Setup message box appears because the option is already installed on a different Empower Enterprise System, click OK to close the message box. To remove the option from an Empower Enterprise System, use the procedure outlined in Section 3.4, Uninstalling Options.


8. Repeat steps 1 to 7 for each option.

Note: The Verify Files utility displays the currently installed licenses and options. To run Verify Files, select Start > Programs > Empower > Verify Files.

Restoring the Option Sample Project

If you install a new option, you can restore the option sample project files from the Empower DVD (see “Restoring projects” in the Empower Help). You can use the option sample project files as examples.

4.4.5 Updating the Database

To complete the server upgrade:

1. Log in to the Empower software using an Administrator account.

2. For Enterprise only: At the C/S Update Server Database dialog box, enter the password EMPOWERCSUPDATE (enter in all capital letters; password is case sensitive), and then click OK.

3. At the Empower Update Database dialog box, confirm that you want to update your database.

4. You will be prompted to select the time zone to use for your computer. Select the correct time zone for your location and click OK.

Note: The update can take a long time to complete, depending on the number and size of your projects.

4.4.6 Restricting Access to the Message Center Properties

In Empower 2, the Message Center properties are global for Enterprise\Workgroup environments and should be secured prior to your server going into production mode. Enable password protection of the Message Center properties immediately after the database is updated in order to ensure that the properties can be modified only by authorized personnel.

To restrict access to Message Center Properties:

1. Log in to the Empower software using an administrator account.

2. Right-click on the Message Center icon in the Sys Tray and select Open.

3. In the Message Center, select View > Properties.

4. Click the Passwords tab. Enable Password Protection then enter and confirm a password. Once enabled, users must supply the correct password in order to access the Message Center properties.

4.4.7 Verifying the Installed Files

The Empower Setup wizard creates an Empower program folder in the Start menu Programs folder. The Empower program folder contains the following program items:

• Installation Log – Contains information about the current installation.

STOPImportant: The time zone you select will be applied to ALL existing database date fields.

• Remove Waters Instrument Component Software – Provides a way to uninstall instrument component software. (This appears in the menu list whether or not ICOP instruments are installed.)

• Verify Files – Verifies the integrity of the Empower software files on your hard disk. Also displays installed license and option information on the server.

Viewing the Install Log Text

The Install Log contains information about your Empower installation. You can use the log file to review your installation choices. In case of partial or unsuccessful installations, you can view the Install Log to check for errors.

To view the Install Log:

1. Select Start > Programs > Empower > Installation Log. The program displays the empower.log file in Notepad.

2. Review the contents of the file. You can print a copy by selecting File > Print.

3. Select File > Exit.

Using the File Verification Utility

The File Verification utility checks the integrity of the installed Empower program, data, and database files.

Note: Log in to the newly installed Empower software at least once before you use the File Verification utility. This ensures that the utility checks the correct files on your system.

After installation and first login, use the File Verification utility to verify the Empower program and data files only (not the database files):

• As part of your installation qualification, if you purchased the Empower Qualification option

• To ensure that the Empower files have not changed since installation

To use the file verification utility:

1. Select Start > Programs > Empower > Verify Files. The File Verification utility compares the installed Empower files’ checksum with a previously stored checksum, and then creates a File Verification Results log.

2. Review the contents of the file. You can print or save a copy of the results.

3. Select File > Exit.

4.5 Registering Printers

To register printers for Empower reports:

1. Select Start > Programs > Empower > Register Empower Node Printers.

Note: You must be logged in to the Empower node as an administrator or as a user with rights that enable you to write to the registry in order to register Empower node printers.

2. At the Register Empower Node Printers dialog box (Figure 4-33), review the list of printers that are currently registered.

Note: The Register Empower Node Printers dialog box only shows printers that are added using the control panel. To add a new printer, click Start > Settings > Printers.

3. If you need to register additional printers, click Get Printers, select the printer(s), and then click OK.

4. Click OK to save the changes and close the dialog box.

Chapter 5Upgrading a Client

Refer to this chapter when upgrading Millennium32 v4.0 or Empower software on a client in an Empower Enterprise system or a Workgroup to Empower 2.

If the client has a Windows NT operating system, you must first uninstall Millennium32, then upgrade to either Windows XP or Windows 2000 before continuing with the installation. If the client has a Windows XP or Windows 2000 operating system, continue with Section 5.1, Preparing the Client.

5.1 Preparing the Client

Note: If you have an acquisition client, use the procedures outlined in Chapter 6, Upgrading a LAC/E32 Acquisition Server.

The Empower software on a non-acquisition client with the Windows XP or Windows 2000 operating system requires the hardware and software as specified in Table 1-1.

To prepare a client, you need to take these action:

• Change the page file size (Section 5.1.1)

• Configure the event viewer to overwrite events as needed (Section 5.1.2)


STOPAttention: If you plan to change the computer name of a client, Waters recommends that you change the name before installing Empower.

STOPAttention: If you plan to change the operating system, uninstall Millennium32, upgrade the operating system, and then install Empower.

5.1.1 Changing the Page File Size

Empower requires a minimum page file size of 1024 MB.

To change the page file size:

1. Select Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management.

2. Right-click Computer Management, and then click Properties. Click the Advanced tab (Figure 5-1).

3. Click the Performance Options button in the Performance field.

Note: For Windows XP systems, click the Settings button in this field.

4. If the page size is already 1024 MB or greater, click Cancel (there is no need to change the size). Continue with Section 5.1.2.

If the page size is less than 1024 MB, click Change in the Virtual Memory area. Go on to the next step.

5. At the Virtual Memory dialog box (Figure 5-2), under Paging file size for selected drive, enter a minimum of 1024 in Initial size (MB) and a minimum of 1024 in Maximum size (MB), and then click Set.

6. Click OK. At the System Properties dialog box, click OK.

7. Click OK in the Performance Options box, then click OK on the Computer Management Properties box.

8. At the Systems Settings Change dialog box, click Yes to restart the computer.

5.1.2 Configuring the Event Viewer

To configure Event Viewer, perform the following steps on the client:

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.

2. In the System Tools tree, click Event Viewer.

3. Right-click Application, and then click Properties.

4. At the Application Log Properties page, click “Overwrite events as needed” (located in the Log Size field of the General tab). Click Apply, and then click OK.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for Security and System.

6. Close the Event Viewer page.

5.2 Upgrading the Client

To upgrade a client, first uninstall the existing Millennium32 v4.0 or Empower 1154 software using Add/Remove Programs. Then, install Empower2.

Note: If your upgrade includes a change in operating systems, you must uninstall the old software before upgrading the operating system. Uninstall the software, upgrade the operating system, and then continue with the Empower 2 installation.

5.2.1 Uninstalling the Millennium32 v4.0 or Empower 1154 Software


If you have installed one of the following versions of ConnectionsAQT for systems, you must uninstall it before you uninstall the existing software. The Millennium32 v4.0 or Empower 1154 uninstaller does not cleanly uninstall these applications. The affected ConnectionsAQT products are:










Uninstalling Previous Versions of the Software

Uninstall Millennium32 v4.0 or Empower 1154 software using the Add/Remove Programs utility. After uninstalling, delete any remaining Millennium32 v4.0 or Empower 1154 folders and their entire contents from the hard drive before continuing.

After you uninstall the old software, install the Empower 2 software, following the procedure in Section 5.2.2.

STOPAttention: You must uninstall Millennium32 v4.0 or Empower 1154 before you can install the Empower 2 software. A direct upgrade to Empower 2 is not supported.

5.2.2 Installing the Empower Software

Waters supplies Empower software on a DVD. If the PC where you are installing Empower does not have a DVD drive, share the DVD drive of a network-accessible workstation and map a drive to the share from the PC where you will be installing Empower. Allow approximately 15 to 20 minutes to install the software.

You can perform a typical installation to install the software on the C: drive or default location, or a custom installation to specify a different drive.

To install Empower on a client:

1. Insert the Empower DVD into the DVD drive. The Empower 2 Software Installation page appears momentarily.

Note: If the setup procedure does not start automatically, browse to the Autorun directory on the DVD, and then double-click Autorun.exe to launch the Empower 2 Installation Interface (Figure 5-3).


• Install Oracle 10g Enterprise Client software prior to installing Empower 2.• At the time of release, the only supported Oracle 10g patchset is 10.1.0.4.• The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Oracle\NLS_Lang registry key value must be

changed to AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1.• The permissions on the Oracle Home directory (and sub-directories) must be changed

to allow the Group Users all rights except for Full Control.• During installation, you will be asked if you wish to use your installed Oracle software.

Select Yes and supply the location of the Oracle program files.

4. At the Empower 2 Enterprise Software page, click Install Empower Client. The Install Shield wizard starts.

8. At the Setup Type page (Figure 5-5), select Custom if you want to install the software on a drive other than C:. Otherwise, leave Typical selected. Verify that the correct Empower Installation Type is selected, and then click Next.

9. At the Installation Options page (Figure 5-6), make the following selections:

a. In the Install instruments field, select Yes if you want the Waters Instrument Control Pack (ICOP) installer to launch when the client installation is complete Otherwise, leave No selected.

Note: You can also run the Waters ICOP installer after installation, using the installation DVD.

b. The TNS_ADMIN environmental variable setting adds an environmental variable to the client that points to a pre-configured tnsnames.ora file, which is located in a network-accessible share. This allows large installations to maintain a single tnsnames.ora file in a share instead of configuring a tnsnames.ora file on each client and LAC/E32. If you do not intend to use this configuration option, leave No selected and click Next.

If you want to enable the TNS_ADMIN variable, select Yes. Enter the network path to the share containing the pre-configured tnsnames.ora file (for example, \\servername\sharename$), and then click Next. (Use the TNS_ADMIN directory that was set in Section 4.4.2, Configuring a Shared tnsnames.ora File.)

11. If you selected Yes in step 9a, continue with these steps (otherwise, go to step 12):




STOPImportant: If the TNS_ADMIN environmental variable is set, the client will disregard local tnsnames.ora files until the environmental variable is manually deleted.

12. When the installation is complete, restart the client and log in to the operating system as the local administrator.

13. If you are not using the TNS_ADMIN environmental variable, see Section 5.3, Configuring a Database Service Name, to configure a local tnsnames.ora file.

5.2.3 Finishing a Custom Installation

To finish a custom installation (if you selected Custom in step 10):

1. At the Custom Setup page, specify the installation drives for the application. By default, all locations point to the C: drive.

To designate drives other than C:, click an icon (for example, Empower Oracle Files and Database), and then click the Change Feature Location button.

2. At the Change Current Destination Folder page, select the desired drive, and then click OK to return to the Custom Setup page. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for all feature locations.

6. At the Installation is Complete page, click Yes, I want to restart my computer now, and then click Finish.

7. After the computer restarts, log in using an account with Administrator privileges. This allows the drivers to register properly.

5.3 Configuring a Database Service Name

You must configure a net service name (previously called a database alias) on each client and each LAC/E32 Acquisition Server to connect to the Empower database, unless you are using the TNS_ADMIN environment variable.




2. At the Welcome page of the Net Configuration Assistant wizard, select “Local Net Service Name configuration,” and then click Next.


4. At the Service Name page, enter the global database name (Figure 5-8), and then click Next. The global database name is the combination of the database name and the database domain name, as supplied during installation.

For example, if you supplied a database name of WAT6 and a database domain name of Empower1.Waters.com during installation, the global database name is WAT6.Empower1.Waters.com.

Chapter 6Upgrading a LAC/E32 Acquisition Server
Use this chapter to upgrade Empower software on a Waters LAC/E32 Acquisition Server and/or an acquisition client.

Each LAC/E32 Acquisition Server requires the hardware and software listed in Table 1-3. The software is normally installed by Waters Corp. before the system is shipped to you.

6.1 Preparing a LAC/E32 Acquisition Server

The Empower software on a LAC/E32 Acquisition Server and/or an acquisition client requires the hardware and software in Section 1.2, Hardware and Software Requirements.

Use the following procedures to prepare a LAC/E32 Acquisition Server and/or an acquisition client:

• Connecting remotely to a LAC/E32 Acquisition Server (see Appendix A)

• Updating the Equinox driver (see Section 6.1.2)

• Changing the page file size (see Section 6.1.3)

• Configuring the event viewer (Section 6.1.4)

STOPAttention: If you plan to change the computer name of an Empower node or acquisition client, Waters Corp. recommends that you change the name before installing Empower software.

STOPAttention: If the LAC/E32 upgrade requires an operating system change, you will not be able to upgrade through the remote access software. For more information, see the documentation included in the upgrade package or consult your data specialist.

6.1.1 Connecting Remotely

Use the Remote Desktop feature of Windows XP to access your LAC/E32 Acquisition Server from a remote location. For Windows 2000 systems, use ControlIT. (See Appendix A, Connecting Remotely to a LAC/E32 Acquisition Server.)

6.1.2 Updating the Equinox Driver

Empower for Windows XP (or Windows 2000) supports only Equinox Driver v. 5.30.0.5. If the acquisition client has an Equinox 8-port serial interface card, Windows detects, during the first power-up after installing the serial card, the new hardware and automatically installs a driver for the Equinox card. Check the driver version and install v. 5.30.0.5 if needed. If your Empower node does not have an Equinox driver, continue with Section 6.1.3, Changing the Page File Size.

The installation procedure for the Equinox driver v. 5.30.0.5 is described first for Windows XP and then for Windows 2000.

Installing the Equinox Driver on Windows XP

To install the Equinox driver v. 5.30.0.5 on Windows XP:

1. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel. Double-click System.

2. Select the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

3. At the Device Manager window (Figure 6-1), select the +, to the left of Multi-port serial adapters.

To upgrade the LAC/E32 Acquisition Server, use the following procedures:

1. Back up your instsrv.dat file.

2. Uninstall Millennium32 v4.0 or Empower 1154 using Add/Remove Programs.

3. Install Empower using the Empower Setup wizard.

6.2.1 Backing Up the instsrv.dat File

To preserve your chromatographic system information, back up your instsrv.dat file.

To back up your instsrv.dat file:

1. Stop and disable the MillenniumService or WatersService by performing these steps:

a. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel.

b. Double-click Administrative Tools.

c. Double-click Component Services, and then select Services.

d. Right-click MillenniumService or WatersService, and then click Stop.

e. Change the startup type to Disabled.

2. Reboot the LAC/E32.

3. Copy the instsrv.dat file from the Millennium\InstrumentServer or Empower\InstrumentServer directory to a safe location (a location other than the Millennium or Empower directory). You want to be able to reference this file after the Empower installation is complete.

6.2.2 Uninstalling the Millennium32 v4.0 or Empower 1154 Software

12. When the installation is complete, restart the LAC/E32 and log in to the operating system as the local administrator.

13. Restore the instsrv.dat file:

a. Stop the WatersService as follows:

1. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel.

2. Double-click Administrative Tools.

3. Double-click Component Services, and then select Services.

4. Right-click WatersService, and then click Stop.

b. Copy the instsrv.dat file you backed up before you started the Empower installation procedure and paste it into the Empower\InstrumentServer directory. At the Confirm File Replace dialog box, click Yes.

c. Restart the WatersService by right-clicking WatersService, and then selecting Start.

14. If you are not using the TNS_ADMIN environmental variable, see Section 6.3, Configuring a Database Service Name, to configure a local tnsnames.ora file.

Note: Remember to reboot your LAC/E32 Acquisition Server a second time for the busLAC/E driver to be properly registered and detected by the Empower software.

6.3 Configuring a Database Service Name

You must configure a net service name (previously called a database alias) on each client and each LAC/E32 Acquisition Server to connect to the Empower database.




2. At the Welcome page of the Net Configuration Assistant wizard, select Local Net Service Name configuration, and then click Next.


4. At the Service Name page, enter the global database name (Figure 6-26), and then click Next. The global database name is the combination of the Oracle Service Identifier (SID) and the database domain name, as supplied during installation.

For example, if you supplied an SID of WAT6 and a database domain name of Empower1.Waters.com during installation, the global database name is WAT6.Empower1.Waters.com.

Note: You must be logged in to the Empower node as an administrator or user with rights that enable you to write to the registry in order to register Empower node printers.

4. Click OK to save the changes and close the dialog box.

6.5 Setting the LAC/E32 Time Zone

Empower records the date and time of data acquisition and processing for different countries and time zones.

To specify the time zone for the LAC/E32:

1. Log in to Empower as an administrator from any client.

2. Access Configuration Manager and click Empower Nodes.

3. Right-click the LAC/E32 and select Empower Node Properties.

4. Select the appropriate time zone for the LAC/E32, and then click OK.



To complete the upgrade of the LAC/E32 Acquisition Server, restart the LAC/E32 and leave it in a logged out state (do not leave it in a shutdown state).

STOPImportant: A restart of the LAC/E32 is required after the following conditions: you change the time zone of the operating system, and/or the LAC/E32 drops its network connection If either of these conditions occurs and you do not restart the LAC/E32, the time stamps on all injections acquired during buffering may be displayed incorrectly. Changes made to the operating system time zone setting do not take effect until the LAC/E32 is restarted.

Chapter 7Upgrading a File Server

Use this chapter to upgrade an existing file server on Empower 2.

Note: If you are installing or adding a new file server, see Chapter 7 in the Empower 2 Installation and Configuration Guide.

7.1 Considerations and Requirements

Considerations

The WatersService allows specific computers that are running the WatersService to have raw data shares configured for them in Empower. Users can store project raw data on these file shares.

The WatersService provides secure access to Empower raw data files through the Empower application. While the operating system permissions on the files can be set to read-only for Empower users, these same users can have write privileges through the WatersService when running Empower software.

Requirements

• Valid client and server network connections

• Windows 2003 Server or Windows 2000 Server

Note: Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP are supported on a file server; however, the number of incoming connections on each operating system is limited to 10.

7.2 Uninstalling the Existing WatersService

This procedure requires that you delete your existing raw data folders by uninstalling WatersService.

To uninstall the WatersService:

1. Log in as an Administrator user.

2. Access Add/Remove Programs.

3. Click Programs.

4. Select WatersService (or MillenniumService), and then click Remove.

5. Confirm the removal.

7.3 Renaming the Existing Share

This procedure allows you to use the shares that are already configured in your database by renaming the existing share and disabling the sharing function, and then reenabling sharing by configuring the raw data directory.

7.3.1 Renaming the Share

To rename the existing share:

1. Browse to the location of the shared raw data folder.

2. Right-click the folder and select Properties. Click the Sharing tab and record the current Share name of the folder. Click “Do Not Share this folder,” and then click Apply (the share name of the folder will disappear when you click Apply).

3. Rename the folder (for example, OldProjects).

7.3.2 Configuring the Raw Data Directory

To configure the raw data directory:

1. Create a directory for your raw data files (for example: \Empower\Projects).

2. Using Windows Explorer, select the directory you created in step 1. Right-click the directory, select Properties, and then click Sharing.

3. At the Sharing page of the Projects Properties dialog box, select Share this folder, enter the share name you recorded in step 2 of Section 7.3.1, and then click Apply.

STOPAttention: Do not delete your existing raw data folders unless you are sure they have been archived or backed up to a neutral location.

STOPAttention: This procedure applies ONLY to an upgrade using the System Objects export and import process. Do not use this procedure if you exported the entire database. If you exported the entire database, continue with Section 7.4, Installing the WatersService.

7.4 Installing the WatersService

To install the WatersService on a server that does not currently have Empower software:

2. Click Install Empower Software to access the Install Products page.

3. Click Optional Components.

4. Click WatersService.

5. At the Welcome to the InstallShield Wizard for WatersService page, click Next.

6. The Custom Setup page allows you to select the destination of the program files. You can select the default destination or click Change to specify a different path, and then click Next.

7. At the Empower Raw Data Share page, enter the share name you recorded in step 2 of Section 7.3.1, and then click Next.

8. At the Ready to Install the Program page, click Install.

9. At the InstallShield Wizard Complete page, click Finish.

STOPAttention: Before continuing with the installation procedure, verify that all logs in the Event Viewer are set to override events as needed.

7.5 Configuring Raw Data Directory Permissions

The raw data share on the file server is created with the default security settings supplied by the installed operating system. In order to ensure the proper level of access and security, the security permissions must be set exactly as described in Section 4.4.3, Configuring the Empower Projects Directory, in this guide.

Chapter 8Configuring Empower Software in a Citrix MetaFrame Environment

8.1 Introduction

In an Empower software environment, the basis for using Citrix consists of an Enterprise system running two servers (minimum). One is the database server. The other server runs Windows 2000 Server (with Terminal Services installed) and Citrix MetaFrame XPe™.The Empower client is loaded onto the Citrix terminal server. Client computers can then connect to the Citrix server to access and operate the Empower software. Access to Empower is available using the Independent Computing Architecture (ICA) protocol developed by Citrix.

Note: Waters recommends that you install only Empower on your Citrix server.

Before you can use a Citrix server with Empower software, you need to connect to Windows Terminal Services.

There are three licenses required when connecting to Windows Terminal Services. If you do not have the following licenses, then your Terminal Services are not properly licensed.

• The server license - Windows 2000 Server with Terminal Services enabled in application server mode.

• Windows 2000 CAL - The CAL must be the same version or higher as the server being used. When using the Server CAL to support Terminal Services you may only do so in the Per Seat mode. If the client PC is running Windows 2000 Professional (or Windows XP Professional), you do not need to purchase a TS CAL to run applications on a Windows 2000 Terminal Server.

• Either one of these:

– a Terminal Server CAL (version to match or be higher than server being used)

– Windows 2000 Professional (or Windows XP Professional) installed on the desktop itself (version to match or be higher than server being used)

You can also use the Citrix Web Interface Server to provide web-based access to Citrix Empower servers.

8.2 Configuring the Citrix Server

To use the Citrix server with Empower clients, first verify that you are using the required Microsoft operating system and version, and ensure that Citrix XPe software is installed on the server. Then set the system up as follows:

1. Configure Event Viewer.

2. Install the Empower client on the Citrix server.

3. Configure database service names.

4. Publish Empower.

8.2.1 Configuring Event Viewer

To configure Event Viewer, perform the following steps on each Citrix server:

1. Click Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer.

2. At the Event Viewer page, right click Application Log (located in the Tree tab) and select Properties.

3. At the Application Log Properties page, select Overwrite events as needed (located in the Log Size section of the General tab). Select Apply, and then click OK.

4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 for the Security Log and the System Log.


8.2.2 Installing the Empower Client on the Citrix Server


If you have installed one of the following versions of ConnectionsAQT for systems, you must uninstall it before you uninstall the existing software and install Empower 2. The Millennium32 v4.0 or Empower 1154 uninstaller does not cleanly uninstall these applications. The affected ConnectionsAQT products are:

Before you install the client software, determine if you have a previous version of Millennium32 or Empower 1154 software on the Citrix server. If so, uninstall Millennium32 or Empower 1154 using Add/Remove Programs. Then install the client software.

Installing Empower Client Software

To install the Empower client software:

1. Put the Citrix server into install mode by opening a Command Prompt and entering the command change user /install.

Note: This is the equivalent to using Add/Remove Programs to perform the installation.


Note: If the setup procedure does not start automatically, browse to the Autorun directory on the DVD and double-click Autorun.exe to launch the Empower 2 Installation interface.

3. Click Install Empower Software to access the Install Products page.


5. At the Empower 2 Enterprise Software page, click Install Empower Client. The Install Shield wizard starts.


7. At the License Agreement page, read the agreement, select “I accept the terms in the license agreement,” and then click Next.


STOPAttention: Do not attempt to install Empower client on the Citrix server from a staged network location. The Citrix server installation must be performed using the Empower DVD from a local or mapped DVD drive.

9. At the Setup Type page, select Custom if you want to install the software to a drive other than the default. Otherwise, leave Typical selected. Verify that the correct Empower Installation Type is selected, and then click Next.

10. At the Installation Options page, make the following selections:






12. When the installation is complete, restart the Citrix server and log in to the operating system as an administrator.

8.2.3 Configuring the Database Service Names

To configure the database service names, see Section 5.3, Configuring a Database Service Name. At the Net Service Name page, remember that you must define the same net service name on both the Citrix server and the LAC/E32 acquisition servers.

8.2.4 Publishing Empower in Citrix MetaFrame XPe1. Log in to the Citrix Management Console.

2. Select Actions > New > Published Application.

3. At the Publish Application page, enter a Display Name and an Application Description, and then click Next.

4. At the Specify what to Publish page, select Application and then click the Browse button.

5. At the Choose Application page, double-click the appropriate Citrix server and locate X:\Empower\bin\empower.exe (where X is the drive on which you installed Empower). Click OK, and then click Next.

6. At the Program Neighborhood Settings page, select how you want the application to be launched, and then click Next. (The typical setting is Add shortcut to client’s desktop.)

7. At the Specify Applications Appearance page, select your session window size, set colors to True Color (24 bit), and clear Maximum application at startup. Then click Next.

8. At the Specify ICA Client Requirements page, click Next.

9. At the Specify Application Limits page, click Next.

10. At the Specify Servers page, choose the Citrix servers that the application will run on. If you have multiple Citrix servers in a farm and you want to publish Empower as a load balanced application, add each Server that has the Empower Client Stack installed to the Configured Servers list. Then click Next.

11. Select the appropriate domain from the Look in list, then select the accounts that will have access to the application, and then click Add.

For multiple domains, click the folder icon located to the right of the Look in list. Select the next Domain and repeat this step.

Click Next once all accounts have been configured.

12. Click Finish to exit the Citrix Management Console.

Note: If you are using multiple databases and multiple Citrix servers configured in a server farm, you may wish to configure roaming profiles to ensure that each Windows user has their default database set correctly. The last database a user successfully logged in to will be the default database.

Chapter 9Upgrading Empower Web Software

The Empower Web software is a Web-based application that provides Empower software functionality over the Internet or an intranet. Empower Web allows read-only access to Empower data. Through Empower Web, you can log in to an Empower database, generate reports from acquired data, and view the current status of the chromatographic system(s).

Generally, an Empower Web system consists of a server and one or more clients. Empower Web is compatible with Empower software configured as a Workgroup or Enterprise system. For real-time acquisition, Empower Web interacts with Empower acquisition clients or LAC/E32 modules. Empower must be loaded on the Empower Web server; Empower Web clients are not required to have Empower software.

The installation process for Empower Web includes:

• Uninstalling the previous version of Empower WebServer

• Installing Empower WebServer software and client software

• Configuring Empower WebServer and clients

9.1 Upgrading Empower Web Software

To upgrade the Empower web software, you must first uninstall Empower WebServer software and Empower Web client software. Then, install the new client and WebServer software. If you are using local naming, be sure to preserve the tnsnames.ora file.

9.1.1 Uninstalling a Previous Version of Empower WebServer

To uninstall Empower Web from the Empower Web server, use the Windows 2000 Server Add/Remove Programs feature. After you uninstall the Empower Web software, uninstall the Empower client software.

STOPAttention: If you uninstall the Empower Web software but do not uninstall the Empower client software, your Empower client installation will be invalidated.

9.1.2 Installing Empower WebServer

To install Empower WebServer, you must have a Windows 2000 Server (with Service Pack 4) and be able to successfully log in to Windows 2000 Server with the appropriate permissions for installing software applications.

The installation process for Empower WebServer software includes:

• Installing Internet Explorer 6.0 and Microsoft IIS

• Installing Empower client executables

• Installing Empower Web software

• Installing Acrobat Reader

Installing Internet Explorer 6.0 and Microsoft IIS

Before you can successfully install your Empower Web software, the Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 browser and the Microsoft IIS software must be installed. If both of these applications are not installed, your Empower Web installation will fail.

The Empower Web installation program installs all required files to their correct locations, provided that Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and the Microsoft IIS software are correctly installed. The Empower Web starting point folder (also called the application root) is located under the Microsoft IIS Default Web Site folder.

Check the system to determine if the Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 browser and the Microsoft IIS software are installed. If you need to install the Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 browser or the Microsoft IIS software, refer to the Microsoft documentation.

Installing Empower Client Executable Files

Refer to Chapter 5, Upgrading a Client, to properly configure Empower client software.

Installing Empower WebServer

To install the Empower WebServer software:

1. Insert the Empower DVD into the DVD drive. The Empower 2 Installation Interface appears.

2. Click Install Empower Software. Click Optional Components, and then click the WebServer button.

3. The setup wizard scans the computer for Empower software.

• If Empower is not found, the Empower Web installation fails.

• If an unvalidated Empower software installation is found, the Empower Validation dialog box appears. You can choose to continue or to end the installation. If you continue, the Empower Web installation will not be validated.

• If a valid Empower software installation is found, the Welcome dialog box appears (Figure 9-1).

4. Click Next. The License Agreement dialog box appears (Figure 9-2).

5. Read the license agreement, click “I accept the terms in the license agreement,” and then click Next. The Information dialog box appears (Figure 9-3).

6. Click Next to accept the default destination. The Setup Status dialog box appears (Figure 9-4). A status bar indicates the progress of the file transfer to the hard drive.

When the Setup wizard finishes transferring and setting up the Empower Web files, the Wizard Complete dialog box appears (Figure 9-5).

7. Click Finish to complete the Setup process.

Installing Adobe Acrobat Reader

To use the Empower Web server as a client, Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0 is required on the server to install Empower WebServer. If Adobe Acrobat Reader is not installed, the installation will fail.To install Adobe Acrobat Reader, follow the installation instructions provided with Adobe Acrobat Reader.

9.2 Installing Empower Web Client Software

To use a computer as an Empower Web client, the following software must be installed on the client computer:

• Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0

• Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0

9.2.1 Installing Internet Explorer

Each Empower Web client must have Internet Explorer loaded to display WebServer data.

Note: Internet Explorer 6.0 is the only Web browser tested for use with Empower Web.

To install Internet Explorer, follow the instructions provided with the product.

9.2.2 Installing Adobe Acrobat Reader

Empower Web displays real-time plots and reports using Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0. Install Acrobat Reader on each Empower Web client as described in the installation instructions provided with Acrobat Reader.

9.3 Configuring Empower WebServer

9.3.1 Configuring Virtual Directories

Note: This procedure assumes that an Internet Information Services snap-in exists on your system. If you do not have this Windows component, you must install it using Add/Remove Programs/Windows Components. See the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server documentation for more information.

To configure the Empower WebServer, you need to set up virtual directories in the Internet Services Manager. First configure the Empower WebServer Properties virtual directory, then configure the Empower WebServer Reports virtual directory.

Configuring the Empower WebServer Properties Virtual Directory

To configure the Empower WebServer Properties virtual directory:

1. Select Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Internet Services Manager.

2. In the left pane of the window, navigate to the your server name\Default Web Site\EmpowerWebServer folder.

3. Right-click the EmpowerWebServer folder and select Properties. The EmpowerWebServer Properties dialog box appears.

4. Click the Virtual Directory tab. Set the fields on this tab as indicated in Figure 9-6:

a. In the Local Path field, ensure that only Read and Log Visits are checked. Ensure that “Index this resource” is cleared.

b. In the Application Settings field, ensure that Application Protection is set to High (Pooled).

5. Click the Configuration button. At the Application Configuration dialog box, click the App Options tab. Set the fields on this tab as indicated in Figure 9-7:

a. Check “Enable session state” and enter a value of 20 in the session timeout field.

b. Check “Enable buffering” and “Enable parent paths.”

c. In the ASP Script timeout field, enter a value of 600 or greater.

6. Click the App Debugging tab. Ensure that you check both “Enable ASP server-side script debugging” and “Enable ASP client-side script debugging” (Figure 9-8).

7. Click OK. When the EmpowerWebServer Properties dialog box reappears, click the Documents tab. This tab should display Default.htm as the default document (Figure 9-9).

8. Click the Directory Security tab. Click the Edit button in the “Anonymous access and authentication control field.”

9. At the Authentication Methods dialog box, ensure that “Anonymous access” is cleared and that “Integrated Windows authentication” is checked (Figure 9-10).

10. Click OK. When the Empower WebServer Properties dialog box reappears, click OK.

11. Close the Internet Services Manager window.

Configuring the Empower WebServer Reports Virtual Directory

To configure the Empower WebServer Reports virtual directory:

1. Select Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Internet Services Manager.

2. In the left pane of the window, navigate to the your server name\Default Web Site\EmpowerWebServer folder.

3. Select Reports Directory and right-click Properties. The Reports Properties dialog box appears.

4. Click the Directory tab. Set the fields on this tab as indicated in Figure 9-11:

a. In the Local Path field, ensure that Read, Write, and Log Visits are checked. Ensure that “Index this resource” is cleared.

b. In the Application Settings field, ensure that Execute Permissions is set to Scripts only.

5. Click the Documents tab. This tab should display Default.htm as the default document. Click OK.

6. When the Empower WebServer Properties dialog box reappears, click OK.

7. Close the Internet Services Manager window.

9.3.2 Configuring Database Service Names

You must set up and configure all Empower database servers you want to access before you can view the results using Empower Web. For information on setting up and configuring Empower database server names using Oracle Net Configuration Assistant, see Chapter 5, Section 5.3 on page 113.

9.3.3 Setting Report Directory Permissions

Setting report directory permissions involves:

• Enabling write permissions

• Adding the server’s IUSR_servername account to the list of authorized users

To set the report directory permissions:

1. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the C:\inetpub\wwwroot\EmpowerWeb folder.

2. In the EmpowerWebServer folder, right-click the Reports folder and select Properties from the cascade menu. The Reports Properties dialog box appears.

3. Click the Security tab.

4. Click Add. The Select Users or Groups dialog box appears.

5. In the Look in drop-down list, select your server name.

6. In the list of users, select the IUSR_servername server account, then click Add.

7. Click OK to return to the Reports Properties dialog box.

8. In the Permissions section, select the Full control check box.

9. Click OK to save your changes and close the Reports Properties dialog box.

9.3.4 Setting Event Viewer Preferences

WebServer sends information events to the Application, Security, and System logs in the Event Viewer. During periods of heavy use, the information events can quickly fill the logs. Monitor the logs periodically and clear messages to keep the system operating.

You can eliminate monitoring tasks and prevent the logs from filling by enabling the logs to overwrite events.

To enable the application, security, and system logs to overwrite events:

1. Select Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer.

2. In the Event Viewer Tree pane, right-click System Log and select Properties from the cascade menu. The System Log Properties dialog box appears (Figure 9-12).

3. Click the Overwrite events as needed option button.

4. Click OK to save your changes and close the System Log Properties dialog box.

5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 for the security and the application logs.

6. Close the Event Viewer.

9.4 Configuring Clients

After you configure the server but before you use Empower Web, you must make configuration changes to each of the Empower Web clients. The procedure for configuring the clients varies depending on the Web browser installed on the client.

9.4.1 Configuring Internet Explorer Clients

Waters recommends keeping the default Internet Explorer settings. Select the security settings as specified in the following procedures.

To configure Empower Web clients that run Internet Explorer, you must set the:

• Cache settings, which control how often the browser checks for newer versions of stored pages

• Security settings, which enable JavaScript and control whether the browser allows cookies

• Acrobat Reader magnification preference

Cache and Security Settings

To ensure the Empower Web software functions properly, set the cache and security properties as follows:

1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. Select Internet Options from the Tools menu. The Internet Options dialog box appears.

3. On the General tab, click Settings. The Settings dialog box appears (Figure 9-13).

4. Select Every visit to the page, then click OK.

5. When the Internet Options dialog box reappears, click the Security tab.

6. In the Web Content Zone area, select Local intranet.

Note: This guide assumes that you use a local intranet to access the Empower Web server. If you access the server using the Internet or if the server address is classified as a trusted or restricted site, select the appropriate Web Content Zone and set the security settings as described next.

7. Click Custom Level. The Security Settings dialog box appears.

a. For Internet security, select the settings as shown in Table 9-1.

b. For intranet security, select the settings as shown in Table 9-2.

Acrobat Reader Magnification Preference

By specifying the Acrobat Reader magnification preference, you can ensure that the Empower data plots are displayed in the Empower Web plot window with no scrolling.

To set the Acrobat Reader magnification preference:

1. Close Internet Explorer and Acrobat Reader.

2. Start Acrobat Reader outside of Internet Explorer.

3. Select Edit > Preferences, and then select Page Display from the list on the left side of the Preferences dialog box.

4. In the Magnification section, select Fit in Page from the Default Zoom drop-down list (or enter a value, such as 50%).

5. Click OK.

6. Close Acrobat Reader.

9.4.2 Configuring LAC/Es

To configure a LAC/E for use with Empower Web software:

1. Click Control Panel > Administrative Tools.

2. Double-click Local Security Policy. Expand Local Polices and then click Security Options (Figure 9-14).

3. Right-click “Network Access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users,” and then click Properties.

Appendix AConnecting Remotely to a LAC/E32 Acquisition Server
The LAC/E32 Acquisition Server has Remote Desktop Connection administration software installed on it. The software is installed by default during Windows XP installation. If you have an XP system, use the Remote Desktop application to control the LAC/E32 Acquisition Server remotely. If you have any Windows 2000 LAC/E systems, you need a Windows 2000 workstation to control them remotely, and you must use ControlIT software on that system. ControlIT will not work on XP systems.

Use the information in this appendix to install remote administration software on a viewer client or server computer. The preferred method for remote control is to use Remote Desktop Connection. (If you already have Terminal Services Client software on your client, you can use that instead.) You can also use ControlIT for controlling the server remotely, but only on Windows 2000 systems.

A.1 Configuring Remote Desktop Connection

To configure Remote Desktop Connection software:

1. Click Programs > Accessories > Communications > Remote Desktop Connection.

2. Click the Options button at the Remote Desktop Connection dialog box.

If you wish to have Remote Desktop Connection start without having to enter an administrator password, type the Administrator password in the password box and select the Save my password check box.

Note: The LAC/E32 is shipped from Waters with the Administrator password set to password.

3. Click the Display tab. Leave the desktop size at Full Screen. Select 256 color or High Color (16 bit) in the Colors box.

4. Click the Local Resources tab and perform these actions:

• In the Remote computer sound selection box, select Do not play.

• In the Keyboard selection box, select In full screen mode only.

• In the Local devices box, clear the check boxes for Disk drives, Printers, and Serial ports.

5. Click the Experience tab. In the Allow the following: check box list, clear the Desktop background check box and select all the remaining options.

6. Click the General tab.

7. To save all these settings, click the Save As button in the Connection settings box.

If keep these as the default settings for starting Remote Desktop Connection, then allowed them to be saved in the default settings file named Default.rdp.

Note: Different settings can be saved with different file names and then selected with the Open button at the General screen. When you save the Remote Desktop configuration settings file to a filename that already exists, you will get a warning message. Click Yes to replace the file.

To start a Remote Desktop connection:

1. At the Remote Desktop Connection General tab, type the IP address of the remote LAC/E32 computer into the Computer box, and then click the Connect button.

Note: The Windows XP LAC/E32 is shipped from Waters with an IP address of 10.10.10.xxx, where xxx are the last 3 numeric digits of the Waters LAC/E32 serial number. For example, for Waters Serial Number E02L32105W, the IP address would be 10.10.10.105.

For Remote Desktop Connection to work, both the Client Viewer computer and the Remote Host computer must have the TCP/IP Protocol installed on the network connection, and there must be a TCP/IP address assigned.

2. If the Viewer client and the Remote LAC/E32 are configured in the same Domain with the same IP address range/Subnet mask, then it is also possible to connect to the remote LAC/E32 system using the remote system’s computer name.

Note: The Windows XP LAC/E32 is shipped with a computer name of Waters-xxx, where xxx are the last 3 numeric digits of the Waters LAC/E32 serial number.

3. If the computer is not found, then an error message appears. If the computer name was used to connect to the computer, then try again using the IP address. Connecting using the IP address should always work.

4. If you select Browse, then the network browse dialog box appears.

Note: If you double-click to continue the Browse, an error message appears if there is no Terminal Server installed on your network.

5. In full screen mode, there is a Connection bar at the top of the remote LAC/E32 Host screen. The host computer is called the remote computer in Remote Desktop Connection terminology.

This Connection bar has the remote computer name (IP address) that you entered. This shows you which LAC/E32 computer you are remotely controlling. In addition, the Connection bar has the following controls:

• Minimize button (-) which, when clicked, minimizes the remote host desktop and returns you to the viewer computer desktop with the remote host session minimized on the task bar.

• Close button (x) which disconnects the remote host session.You can also disconnect from the remote host by clicking Start >Disconnect.

• Restore/Maximize button which allows the remote host desktop be a window on the viewer computer desktop. When the remote desktop is a window, the Connection bar is no longer necessary and is no longer displayed.

6. If you change the IP address is at the remote LAC/E32 computer during a remote connection session, and then click the OK button in Local Area Connection Properties, you should immediately issue a session Disconnect. You can then re-establish the connection using the new IP address for the Computer name (or the computer name if the systems are now in the same domain/IP address range/subnet mask).

7. To disconnect from the remote system but keep your logon session active, click the ‘x’ on the connection bar in full screen mode. Alternatively, at the remote system desktop, click Start > Disconnect. The Disconnect Windows Session message box appears. Click OK.

When you disconnect from the LAC/E32, the remote session is still active and you are still actively logged on to the system. If you want to end your remote session, you must log off from the system.

8. To log off and end a remote session, at the remote system desktop, click Start > Log Off. The Log Off Windows dialog box appears. Click the Log Off Button.

The LAC/E32 system will now be at the logon screen, ready for logon if another Remote Desktop Connection session is initiated.

Note: Empower services will run on the LAC/E32 while it is at the logon screen.

If a system Restart occurs at the remote host during a remote session, desktop (for example, after a program is installed and does a Restart) you will be automatically logged off from the remote system and you will be returned to the viewer desktop.

To initiate a system Restart or Power-down:

1. Click Start > Windows Security. This will bring up the same menu as pressing Control > Alt > Delete at the LAC/E32 Desktop with local logon.

2. Click the Shutdown button. This will bring up the Shut Down Windows dialog box. Select Restart or Shutdown and then click OK.

For the Windows XP LAC/E32 system to accept incoming remote connections, it must be enabled in System Properties. This has already been done on the Windows XP LAC/E32 system as follows:

a. Right click the My Computer Icon on the desktop and select Properties.

b. Click the Remote tab. Select the Allow users to connect remotely to this computer check box. Click OK.

System Administrators can use Remote Desktop Connection by default. However, it is possible to Add other users or Groups with this capability using the Select Remote Users button in the Remote tab of System Properties (at the LAC/E32).

A.2 Installing ControlIT Software

Note: ControlIT will not install in Windows XP systems.

To install ControlIT® Remote Administration software on a viewer computer:

1. Log in to the viewer client or server computer as its local Administrator.

2. Insert the ControlIT Advanced Edition CD into the DVD drive.

If the ControlIT Setup wizard does not start automatically, select Start > Run. Type cd_drive:\intel\setup.exe, and then press Enter.

3. At the Initial Install page (Figure A-1), click ControlIT.

4. At the License Agreement page, click I Agree.

5. At the Select the Type of ControlIT Environment page, select “Install Non-Managed Viewer and Host Components,” then click Next.

6. At the Welcome to ControlIT Installation wizard page (Figure A-2), use the default selections, and then click Next.

STOPAttention: To use the ControlIT procedures as written in this guide, ensure that you select “Install Non-Managed Viewer and Host Components.” If you do not, ControlIT installs many additional tools and options.

7. At the Emergency Repair Disk page (Figure A-3), leave the check box cleared, and then click Next.

8. At the ControlIT Directory Selection page (Figure A-4), use the default directory, and then click Next.

9. At the Create ControlIT Program Icon page (Figure A-5), use the default selection, and then click Next.

10. At the Ready to Install Files page (Figure A-6), click Finish.

11. The files are copied, the ControlIT Program group is created, and the message ControlIT Installation is complete appears. Click OK.

12. At the message Your system must be restarted. Restart now?, click Yes.

13. Remove the ControlIT DVD from the DVD drive.

14. After the system has restarted, log in as local Administrator.

15. Close the ControlIT Program group window.

16. Click ControlIT in the taskbar to maximize ControlIT.

A.3 Setting Preferences

To set the preferences:

1. At the ControlIT Main window, select File > Preferences.

2. At the Change Preferences dialog box (Figure A-7), set the Viewer preferences as follows:

a. Double-click Viewer in the Preferences list to expand it, and then scroll down the list and select Disable Host keyboard, Disable Host mouse, and “Start in full screen mode.”

b. Clear “Hide application during Host session” (Figure A-8).

3. Set the Host preferences as follows:

a. Double-click Host in the Preferences list to expand it, and then clear “Hide application during Host session” (Figure A-9).

b. For the viewer computer, clear Enable Host Mode.

4. Set the Internet (TCP/IP) preferences as follows:

a. Double-click Internet (TCP/IP) in the Preferences list to expand it.

b. Select “Allow incoming calls.”

c. Verify that “Multiple incoming connections” is also selected (Figure A-10).

5. Set the General preferences as follows:

a. Double-click General in the Preferences list to expand it.

b. If you want the ControlIT software to automatically start at each login, and then click “Start before login” (Figure A-11).

c. If TCP/IP is not already configured on the viewer client or the LAC/E32 Acquisition Server, then select NetBIOS/NetBEUI.

d. Near the bottom of the General Preferences list, verify that “Listen on startup” is selected (Figure A-12).

e. Verify that “Set computer name” is cleared so that ControlIT can read the computer name and use it when communicating with other computers.

f. If NetBIOS/NetBEUI is selected from the General Preferences list, then scroll down the list and double-click NetBIOS/NetBEUI (Figure A-13).

g. Select “Allow incoming calls.”

h. Verify that “Multiple incoming connections” is selected.

i. Click OK to save the changes. The ControlIT Main window appears.

6. If you cleared Enable Host Mode, then click Yes at the message to restart the system.

7. Log on as local Administrator.

8. If you selected “Start before login” from the General Preferences list, then click ControlIT on the taskbar to maximize it.

Otherwise, select Start > Programs > ControlIT > ControlIT, and then click ControlIT on the taskbar to maximize it.

9. Edit the access codes as follows:

a. Select File > Edit Access Codes.

b. Type waters in the User Name, ControlIT Login Name, and ControlIT Login Password fields (Figure A-14).

c. Click Add, and then click OK.

A.4 Remotely Controlling the LAC/E32 Acquisition Server

To connect to and remotely control the LAC/E32 Acquisition Server from the viewer computer:

1. Select Connect > Connect Remote.

2. At the Remote Workstation Browser dialog box, if TCP/IP is not configured, and then click the Netbios tab (Figure A-15).

3. Select the LAC/E32 Acquisition Server from the Networks to browse list, and then click Copy.

4. At the Enter Address dialog box (Figure A-16), type waters in the Login Name and Login Password fields, and then click OK.

5. From the ControlIT Main window, click Viewer. The LAC/E32 Acquisition Server desktop appears with remote keyboard and mouse control (Figure A-17).

6. If you prefer to see the LAC/E32 Acquisition Server screen as a window in the ControlIT application, right-click the blinking red box in the upper-left corner of the screen and select Switch to Windows Screen from the blinking red box menu.

Note: At this point, you can install the LAC/E32 Acquisition Server software (see Chapter 6, Upgrading a LAC/E32 Acquisition Server).

7. To exit Remote Control of the LAC/E32 Acquisition Server:

• In Full Screen mode – Right-click the blinking red box in the upper-left corner of the screen and select Normal Disconnect.

• In Windows Screen mode – Select ControlIT Disconnect > Normal.

8. At the Disconnect confirmation message box, click Yes.

Note: ControlIT is compatible with Remotely Possible™32 (its predecessor).

However, if you remotely connect from a ControlIT viewer to a computer running Remotely Possible32, then a message appears (Figure A-18) because Remotely Possible32 is using RP/32 Proprietary encryption, while ControlIT is using 40-bit Windows XP encryption. To prevent future repetition, select “Do not show this warning message again,” and then click Yes.
