EMPLOYER INFORMATION STATEMENTS PRPS RECRUITMENT 2012/13

All employers on the Approved list were asked to provide an information statement regarding their organisation and the arrangements for pre-registration training. Each statement should contain contact information along with details of training sites on offer, general background to the organisation and information on potential opportunities for summer placements, part-time work and visiting each Pharmacy. The purpose of the employer’s information statement is to facilitate prospective trainees in making informed choices about potential employers that they may wish to undertake their pre-registration training with thus enabling them to complete their Preference form. The key to being successful in the recruitment process is to ensure that you are on employer preference lists prior to the Preferencing deadline, the best way to do this is to arrange visitations and work placements with employers. Please be aware that some employers, in their information statements, have listed premises that are not on the NES Approved list. Please note that ONLY premises on the NES Approved list may be used as training bases in the Pre- Registration Pharmacist Scheme (PRPS). There are two different ways of viewing and navigating this document, the first index is listed alphabetically by Pharmacy name, and broken up into sections for Community and Hospital Pharmacies. ORGANISATION BACKGROUND

Based in Burnside, a suburb on the edge of Glasgow, Burnside Pharmacy offers experience in most aspects of community pharmacy. As well as all the core aspects of pharmaceutical care, we participate in a number of local services including a pharmacy Heart Failure service, Falls and Osteoporosis, Keep Well. We are a palliative care pharmacy, and offer a domiciliary oxygen service as well as a supervised methadone service. We also run pharmacist independent prescribing clinics most recently covering Pain as well as Asthma and COPD. We are currently in our third year of participating in the NES Pre-registration Pharmacist Scheme. The tutor, Alasdair Macintyre, has trained a number of pre-registration graduates prior to entry in the scheme, and has found the additional training and support offered by NES to be very beneficial both to himself as well as the trainee.

GENERAL COMMENTS Most of the necessary community experience of a pre-registration pharmacy graduate can be obtained at Burnside Pharmacy itself, however, we strive to increase that experience through visiting a needle exchange pharmacy, a GP practice and giving the trainee an insight into the organisation of other bodies impacting on the delivery of healthcare services e.g. the local CHP, the health board and Community Pharmacy Scotland. We are fully committed to providing the high standards of pre-registration training as required by NES Pharmacy through full compliance with the requirements of the Educational Agreement.

We are a small independent group operating two pharmacies in the Falkirk/Stirling area. Both pharmacies work very closely together and aim to provide our patients with the highest possible standard of service. 2010/11 was our first year participating in the pre-reg scheme and proved to be very successful. The wide variety of services offered from our pharmacies, including oxygen, methadone, needle exchange, mds, flu vaccinations, etc allow us to provide a greater insight into pharmacy. We also have relationships with many local practitioners allowing students to spend time with district nurses, the community alcohol and drug service, stoma nurses, respiratory nurses etc. Our training schedule offers the flexibility for trainees to concentrate on particular skills they may wish to develop.

We have taken Students at our Glasgow branch for about 15 years and Dunblane for 4 years. We participate in the NES study days and local tutors organise other experiences depending on circumstances. Head Office offer some training in management and other relevant topics. If the student has an area of particular interest we are happy to accommodate that if appropriate.

GENERAL COMMENTS As we are a small company and there are limited opportunities for continuing employment. However, most of our pharmacists did their pre-registration year with us. If a position becomes available during the year we would always give consideration to making an offer to a student if possible.

Apple Pharmacy Group have 16 pharmacies. Our Group is based in Scotland with branches in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Paisley. We are a young company always looking to expand and will hopefully add more shops to the group by the end of the year. We have been providing pre-registration places for over six years now.

GENERAL COMMENTS The pre-registration trainees will be given full guidance and training by their tutors in the branch that they are registered in. Once a month we will organise for them to attend a pre-registration training event at a location organised by NHS Education for Scotland. We do look to retain all pre-registration trainees and offer them employment as managers, relief managers and locums when they qualify. Barnton Pharmacy is able to offer one placement over summer for a pharmacy student keen to develop their skills in accordance with their university studies. Recruitment is usually end March for summer placements. During the first summer placement, students focus on counter assistant training and communication. Subsequent years permit development and learning in the dispensary, whilst increasing interaction with patients. Keen to promote pharmacy as a profession, Barnton Pharmacy offers work experience for those contemplating this career pathway. In addition, the organisation has worked closely with Telford College to offer placements for students undertaking dispensing technician training. Promoting multidisciplinary working, Barnton Pharmacy frequently participates in induction training for nurses, GP registrars, prescribers and surgery staff.


Barnton Pharmacy is an independent community pharmacy in north west Edinburgh. Although a long established pharmacy, it has been under new ownership since March 2010. Jointly owned by two enthusiastic and dynamic pharmacists Barnton Pharmacy is now delivering top quality pharmaceutical care in the community. The Boots Summer Placement Programme is a fantastic way to get your pharmacy career up and running. You’ll experience real community pharmacy and see what it’s all about by talking to customers and working alongside experienced healthcare teams. You’ll have the chance to put into practice what you’ve learned at university as well as picking up skills you won’t acquire in a classroom. It starts with a Welcome Day where you’ll get to meet other students. It ends with a ‘Looking to the Future’ session, where you’ll share your successes and celebrate what you’ve achieved in the intervening eight weeks. On a Summer Placement Programme (SPP) you can learn and achieve a lot. The programme has been shaped by previous students to keep it relevant to what you need. You’ll be given a dedicated tutor who’ll be with you all the way, offering advice, assessing your performance and giving you feedback through regular one-to-one reviews. It gives you a picture of your strengths and development needs going forward, and a taste of the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) that’s key to your professional future in years to come. Burrells Pharmacy is a small independent with two pharmacy premises in the same town. Both these premises enjoy close links with the local GP Practice. We have now had three previous, successful pre-registration trainees. Burrells provides a range of services including Core services (eAMS, eCMS and eMAS) and additional services including smoking cessation, EHC, domiciliary oxygen, MDS for homes/community, flu/HPV vaccines, methadone supervision, pilot services for coeliacs and lifestyle assessment and advice. At present Burrells runs a Weight Management Clinic in conjunction with a local dietitian. Burrells also have an independent prescriber, who runs a Weight Management Clinic from the Pharmacy, and Pharmacy Champion.

GENERAL COMMENTS Pre registration trainees attend Regional Training days and are encouraged to attend local pharmacy branch meetings. Trainees and tutors are also supported with in house training guides that complement the RPSGB manuals. These guides contain case studies and activities to be completed by the trainee with the guidance of their tutor. Halfway through their pre registration year, the trainees are invited to apply for Manager in Training positions. There is then a 6 month training programme post-registration to prepare trainees for management. This includes 1-2-1 support immediately post-registration and ongoing support and training.

We have never had a pre-registration student. We are a small pharmacy employing 5 members of staff. We are part of the albapharm pharmacy group and benefit from the staff training programme provided by them through alphega; as well as being a member of the NPA. As Catrine is a small village we are in the fortunate position of having a close working relationship with the local GP practice, and are involved in attending weekly multi-disciplinary meetings to help improve patient care. We have a qualified supplementary prescriber, and participate in the local initiatives being run by the Health Board e.g. Keep Well, NRT, Chlamydia testing, EHC, Dosette boxes, Comminuty MAR chart system.

We are an independent pharmacy group with five branches Our training site on offer is located in the ‘Shawlands’ community of ‘Glasgow South’ We have provided pre-registration placements for over 20 years with all our trainees successfully registering with

the RPSGB as pharmacists. We operate a joint tutorship with Amanda Yung as the lead tutor, 3 days a week, and John Paul Mackie as

second tutor, 2 days a week. Amanda was a pre-registration student with the company in 1997 and returned in 2003. Amanda qualified as a

supplementary prescriber in 2009 and is at the forefront of professional development currently working towards her independent prescriber qualification.

We recognize that the pre-registration year is crucial in the personal and professional development of the trainee. We encourage the trainee to identify and respond to their own training needs using RPSGB competencies and their planning / recording CPD facility. This is supplemented by the GG&C study day program with full tutorial support and review.

Trainee hours are 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday with 1 hour for lunch each day and 6 hours protected learning time each week on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

GENERAL COMMENTS Our healthy NHS, private and OTC trade combined with our participation in every available NHS scheme ensures our trainees obtain the widest possible pre-registration experience. Our activities include ‘palliative care’, ‘falls prevention’, ‘heart failure’, ‘MMy Medicines’, ‘Unscheduled Care’, ‘EHC’ & ‘Smoking Cessation’. Students will also have the opportunity to attend any Health Board training days related to the above activities throughout the year. We comply fully with all the requirements of the Educational Agreement with NES Pharmacy.

This placement is offered in a busy Independent Pharmacy situated within easy reach of the City Centre of Edinburgh. The pharmacy has the luxury of always practicing with two pharmacists on duty and sufficient suitably trained support staff. The tutor has in excess of 10 years experience of helping trainees to successfully complete their Pre-registration year. Students who have completed their training in this pharmacy have a high degree of employability. The pharmacy offers onsite experience of Oxygen, Palliative Care, Smoking Cessation, Minor ailments, Needle Exchange, Emergency Contraception, Methadone dispensing and supervision and Disulfuram and Buprenophrine supervision. Two of our Pharmacists are Supplementary Prescribers and run Diabetic and Hypertension clinics in the adjacent Medical Centre. The Pharmacy is seen as having a progressive outlook.

We are a family run company with 6 busy pharmacies in Aberdeen. The company is owned and overseen by Brian and Fiona Arris who are both pharmacists. Each pharmacy has a pharmacy manager many of whom are previous pre-registration students. We run 2 supplementary prescribing clinics in local surgeries specialising in asthma and COPD and have strong links locally with the medical profession whom also use us to train their medical students. The business is diverse and the variation contributes to a broad grounding in all aspects of community pharmacy. Services provided in our Aberdeen pharmacies include Emergency hormonal contraception supply, Chlamydia testing, Needle exchange, Minor ailment services, Flu vaccines, Nursing Home supplies and advice and Methadone provision, Oxygen, Hep B immunization, Smoking cessation. Our Torry branch is involved in drug misuse and works with NHS Grampian on pilots and projects locally. There is a good staff mix and we employ a lot of students from RGU which adds a cosmopolitan, fun, friendly atmosphere to the pharmacies and trainees settle in quickly. All pharmacies are refitted with consultation rooms and the 3 training sites on offer are fitted to an exceptional standard within the last year. The pharmacies are used to pre-registration students and we have been pre-registration training for over 10 years now. We offer on the job training experiencing all of our pharmacies services. Off – the job development includes weekly study afternoons at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with hospital pharmacists allowing peer support. NES study days (National and regional). Assigned shadowing of other healthcare professionals within primary care. 2 week hospital placement. Mock exams to maintain companies high 1st time exam pass rate.

We work closely with a number of Schools of Pharmacy to provide Pharmacy practice placements and are keen to support students throughout their studies. We recruit pharmacy students to work part time within our pharmacies, giving them the opportunity to learn more about team working within the community pharmacy setting. retain and develop each Pre reg into a professional and focused Pharmacy Manager. Graduates are recruited from a range of schools of pharmacy. All graduates have access to dedicated team of people working within the Training Department and within their own pharmacy, to help them develop their skills and experience in practice and to prepare them for the registration exam.

All pre registration tutors have ongoing training support and tutors meet up twice per year for residential training.

All pre registration graduates working with Rowlands attend 4 residential sessions per year and sit a mock pre reg examination. The emphasis on residential sessions is encouraging team working, developing professional and management skills & preparation for practice.

At the end of the pre-registration year we look to offer a Relief Manager or Pharmacy Manager position to successful students. We can offer:

Stewart Pharmacy has been owned by Chris Daly since December 1991 and trading from its current premises since August 1997. We have successfully helped 8 pre-registration pharmacists qualify and take pride in our 100% Success rate. Robert Meikle took over as official Pre-registration tutor in 2009 when Chris opened a new contract pharmacy in Dalrymple but she acts as joint tutor and is another source of help and experience that the student can use. Stewarton is a small town in East Ayrshire about 4 miles from the Fenwick turnoff on the M77/A77. We have had pre-regs from Glasgow, Largs, Ayr, Johnstone and Bridge of Weir so it is well situated for drivers and there is now a half hourly train service to and from Glasgow Central. We tend to know all our customers and are a true community pharmacy. We are also a “palliative care” pharmacy and involved with all public health and local initiatives.

My company has two branches(formerly three), both in the busy market town of Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, 1 mile apart. We have two full time pharmacist, ( three including myself, although supervision is my forte!), and three part time pharmacists. At the bigger branch, two pharmacists are present all day. The town is served by a twelve doctor practice, and both our branches are busy dispensing pharmacies. Both branches also participate in flu vaccination programmes, and a full prescribing and vaccine administration travel clinic. Two of our pharmacists are independent prescribers.

Our primary and secondary care Pharmacy teams have a central base at Borders General Hospital in Melrose facilitating close working relationships and enhanced patient care. NHS Borders is the NHS service provider for the Scottish Borders, employs approximately 3,200 staff and serves a growing population of about 116,000 at October 2010. We provide acute and primary care services from the Borders General Hospital, 4 community hospitals and a network of mental health and learning disability inpatient, community and day facilities. Fife has a population of 356 000 with the acute hospital services provided through three Operational Division hospitals; the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, the Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline and Forth Park Hospital in Kirkcaldy. There is the opportunity to experience a broad range of services provided through NHS Fife hospitals including cardiology, general medicine, inpatient and outpatient haematology/ oncology, general surgery, vascular surgery, paediatrics and intensive care. NHS Fife Operational Division Pharmacy has a workforce of 29 pharmacists and 57 other staff which serves NHS Fife’s hospital sites from two Pharmacy Departments in the Victoria Hospital and the Queen Margaret Hospital. We have a proven track record as a learning environment with a number of very experienced pharmacists, technicians and other staff supporting the trainee throughout the year. We are experienced in supporting trainees at all levels and have a number of staff undertaking a range of studies through various universities and colleges including Pharmacist Independent Prescriber Courses and MSc postgraduate degrees in Clinical Pharmacy. other professions such as Nursing, Medical and Allied Health Professionals. Forth Valley Royal Hospital is an acute hospital based in Larbert in Central Scotland, approximately 30 miles from both Glasgow and Edinburgh. ORGANISATION BACKGROUND GJNH has been involved in pre-registration training (accepting community cross sector trainees for the past 5 years. We have also been involved in supporting University of Strathclyde undergraduates in both 3rd and 4th year clinical placements) The hospital is based at a single site in Clydebank and specialises in elective surgery (mainly Orthopaedic Joint Replacement) and is the West of Scotland Regional Heart and Lung Centre. Because of the acute nature of the patients the hospital has a large number of critical care beds. Pharmacy offers a clinical pharmacy and medicines management service to the hospital.

Technical Services The function of this section is to provide specialist aseptic dispensing services on an individual patient basis and also to assemble and manufacture medicines under a licence issued by the MHRA. Aseptic dispensing includes preparation of total parenteral nutrition fluids, radiopharmaceuticals and cytotoxic injections in response to prescriptions from clinicians. An integral part of the Technical Services is a Quality Assurance laboratory. As well as ensuring that all manufacturing and assembly operations are carried out in a manner which complies with legislation laid down in the Medicine Act 1968, the Quality Assurance team also deals with process and operator validation, product analysis and stability, environmental monitoring, organisation of drug recalls, control of documentation, pharmaceutical audit and medical gas testing and certification. All clinical trials carried out in NHS Grampian are co-ordinated from the design stage to completion and include protocol review, set-up, randomisation, dispensing, documentation and closure procedures. Clinical Pharmacy Services The current team of approximately 30 clinical pharmacists aims to improve medicine use by working with patients and the multidisciplinary ward team to provide advice and information promoting the safe, rational and economic use of medicines. The important role played by pharmacists includes:

Screening patients in order to identify pharmaceutical care issues Working closely with doctors and other healthcare professionals to resolve these issues Writing in-patient drug charts to ensure clear and unambiguous prescriptions to minimize drug prescribing and

Medicines Information Service The Medicines Information Centre based at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is a regional specialist centre, which provides a service to both hospital and community medical, nursing, pharmacy and other healthcare staff throughout Grampian, Orkney and Shetland. It is a clinically orientated service providing a focus for the accumulation, organisation, evaluation and dissemination of information pertaining to all aspects of medicine use. It has at its disposal a range of information sources including textbooks, medical and pharmaceutical journals, computerised databases and online searching facilities. Support services Our dispensaries are responsible for the provision of our one-stop medicines management system where individually dispensed medicines are supplied for inpatient use and for discharge. They also provide drugs for patients attending specialist out-patient clinics. Drug procurement and Supply Services are based within Aberdeen Royal Infirmary supplying medicines to wards, clinics and departments within Grampian, Orkney and Shetland Health Boards as well as a comprehensive vaccines service to the childhood immunization programme and school health service.

GENERAL COMMENTS A comprehensive tutorial program is provided for pre-registration trainees on Thursday afternoons in addition to regular weekly lunchtime learning sessions open to all staff. On completion of training newly qualified Pharmacists are encouraged to undertake postgraduate study for Stage II vocational training, clinical diplomas and prescribing courses. NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde has the biggest hospital pharmacy team in Scotland. Pre-registration training is provided for 17 graduates and the organisation has supported pre-registration training for a very long time with a very good track record thanks to the excellent support provided by the Pre-registration Tutors. The hospital pharmacy service in Greater Glasgow & Clyde provides a comprehensive range of services and the main focus is the delivery of high quality pharmaceutical care to patients across all hospitals and clinical specialities. The geographical size of the Health Board is relatively small for the size of its population (almost ¼ of the population of Scotland).

Recent redesign of services has produced a centralised robotic procurement and distribution service and this will enable the hospital teams to further develop existing ward based services so that most patients will have their medicines in the bedside locker and the pharmacy team will be on hand to take drug histories, provide clinical advice, prescribe medicines and educate patients and staff. The pharmacy service has also consolidated its information and governance arrangements and created appropriate specialist teams to provide expert advice across the single system service to ensure consistency of approach. Pre-registration trainees will participate in most areas of service delivery and gain broad experience and evidence to demonstrate completion of the Performance Standards. NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde provides the full range of clinical specialities including cardiology, respiratory, gastroenterology, neurology, nephrology, urology, vascular surgery, plastic surgery, dermatology, intensive care medicine, paediatrics, neonatology, fetal medicine, psychiatry, care of the elderly and several more. The West of Scotland Cancer Centre is based at the Beatson Oncology Centre in Glasgow and has a well developed pharmacy service. Pre-registration trainees will get the opportunity to train in several of these areas during their year. There are close working relationships with Pharmaceutical Public Health, Prescribing Support Services, and Community Pharmacies and all of these areas contribute to pre-registration training. Pre-registration trainees will attend West of Scotland hospital pharmacy pre-registration training days and local tutorial sessions as well as participate in all aspects of training associated with the NES Pre-Registration Pharmacist Scheme.

About Raigmore Raigmore Hospital is the major hospital for the Highlands serving a population of just over 200000 over a large geographical area. It is situated in Inverness, one of the fastest growing cities in Europe where the quality of life is hard to beat. Raigmore boasts an enviable reputation for the quality of the services provided and for the friendliness of its staff. Pre-registration trainee pharmacists can be assured of a warm welcome. Raigmore currently has two places for pharmacy preregistration training, this may vary according to demand and capacity. Application should be made through NHS Education for Scotland (NES). About the Pharmacy Like the city in which it is situated, the Raigmore Pharmacy is developing rapidly. There are about 80 staff at the main site, Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, and about 90 within the overall Pharmacy Services Unit which also includes some primary care pharmacists and support staff. Amongst upgraded facilities at Raigmore Pharmacy Department are an Aseptic Dispensing Unit, a Medicines Information and Training Centre, a Dispensary, a Store and Clinical Pharmacy Office facilities. In 2008 much of the Department’s clinical trials activity shifted to the newly opened Clinical Research Facility.

Redesign of medicines usage supporting implementation of national strategy is designed to deliver improved evidence-based services to the public and patients, using the skills of the pharmaceutical profession to deliver effective care. In conjunction with other initiatives, including skill mix review, this will also address quality standards and targets for medicines management. These are designed to ensure that medicines policies throughout Highland are consistent with best practice. With this overall programme for change and the increase in staff establishment already achieved, comes the opportunity both for the development and promotion of existing staff and for new staff to join the Department at an exciting time. Combining the present pace of change of scientific and technical developments with the structural reorganisation and current developments in professional practice for Pharmacy staff (such as the introduction of supplementary and independent prescribing), there can be little doubt that this is a challenging time for the Pharmacy profession. It is also a time of great opportunity for the individual.

GENERAL COMMENTS About the Pre-registration Year Pre-registration trainee pharmacists based at Raigmore enjoy a full and varied year tailored to their individual needs and interests. The year follows the GPhC Performance Standards Programme in the context of experiencing work in a variety of specialities and settings. Trainees usually start with a brief spell in the distribution and procurement sections of the department. This provides them with an understanding of the vital roles, which these core sections have in ensuring the continuing availability of medicines for patient care. Experience is then gained in all the other sections of the department: Quality Assurance, Medicines Management & Information, Production / Aseptic Dispensing, Dispensary and Clinical Pharmacy. A clinical placement in Mental Health Pharmacy at New Craigs in Inverness is included. Trainees also spend time with Primary Care colleagues and learn of the work of specialists such as NHS Highland’s Formulary Pharmacist. Trainees are given a choice of projects for the NES scheme. About the sections Pre-registration trainees will experience a variety of challenges in a variety of settings. Whilst most pharmacy students aspire to be clinical pharmacists, the pre-registration year introduces trainees to a wider range of activities where the particular skills and knowledge of the pharmacists are equally important.

Often the experience gained in the pre-registration year can set a trainee off on a quite different career path and therefore it is important that trainees have the opportunity to sample the different roles of the hospital pharmacist. It is also vital to sample these roles in order that, as a qualified pharmacist, you have an understanding of how the department functions as a whole and of how the different sections support each other. More detailed information on the different sections follows. a) Clinical Pharmacy The service is provided by a team of senior, middle grade and junior clinical pharmacists through a multidisciplinary clinical directorate structure. Clinical pharmacists provide pharmaceutical care to patients in the Medical, Surgical and Woman and Child Health Directorates. A Senior Pharmacist Renal Services also provides specialist care to renal in-patients and to patients attending the Renal Unit. New posts of Area Antimicrobials Pharmacist and Clinical Trials & Research Pharmacist were appointed in 2008. The clinical pharmacy service is evolving all the time and is being developed to ensure that clinical pharmacists spent more time delivering patient focused care working within multiprofessional clinical teams. Monitoring the cost-effective use of medicines also forms part of the clinical pharmacist’s role, in order to inform the drug budget setting process. Clinical pharmacists are also involved in training health care professionals on issues relating to medicines management, to facilitate safe and effective prescribing. Several clinical pharmacists at Raigmore are qualified as supplementary and / or independent prescribers. These skills will be targeted to areas of specialist care. It is intended to develop improved clinical management processes and improved access for patients to appropriate drug treatments. You will gain experience in all these areas in which the development and application of integrated models of care within managed care processes enables the delivery of evidence-based treatments and pharmaceutical care at the point of patient contact. The pre-registration trainees’ schedule includes taking responsibility for first-line clinical pharmacy services to a dedicated group of patients within a context of supervision by an experienced practitioner. This aims to develop the skills and confidence necessary to practice as a clinical pharmacist immediately on registration.





b) Medicines Management & Information The service is provided by pharmacists and administrative staff who provide both an enquiry answering service to health care professionals across NHS Highland and support to a variety of projects around medicine use in the hospital setting. The Medicine Information service answers over 100 enquiries per month, approximately a quarter of which come from primary care. Medicines Management workload is dictated by national directives e.g. from National Patient Safety Agency, NICE, SMC; also local initiatives such as the local formulary development and support for the Area Drug and Therapeutics Committee. c) Production & Oncology/Haematology (Raigmore Hospital is one of Scotland’s five cancer centres). The Aseptic Dispensing Unit (ADU) provides a specialist aseptic dispensing service for adult and neonatal total parenteral nutrition (TPN), chemotherapy necessary for oncology/haematology/rheumatology patients and other products requiring aseptic manipulation. Pharmacists working in the ADU are also able to advise on drug compatibility and stability queries concerning the dispensed products. The Production Pharmacist is also a member of the Raigmore Hospital Nutrition Team. The Non-Sterile Production Unit manufactures extemporaneous products to a standard that ensures the stability and quality of the final product. These products include creams, pastes and suspensions that are not readily available commercially. The Repackaging Unit repackages medicines to MHRA License standard for NHS Highland ward use and patient supply packs are provided to the same standard for A & E departments. Pharmaceutical care is provided to selected oncology and haematology patients. Raigmore Pharmacy Department was the first in the UK to appoint a fully funded Macmillan Principal Pharmacist in Oncology. d) Medicines Procurement The procurement section is responsible for the cost effective purchase of medicines for the managed service. This involves the maintenance of nationally and locally negotiated contracts and purchase agreements and the ordering of pharmaceuticals in line with those contracts and purchase agreements. Incoming goods must all be checked on receipt and booked onto the computer system. The section then assists the finance department in the processing of invoice queries. Whilst much of the work is routine it can be highly rewarding

Life saving medicines are often required urgently at short notice and it can be very challenging to ensure supplies are sourced in time from suppliers more than 500 miles away. Usually staff and patients are blissfully unaware of the dramas that have unfolded in getting the drug on time but those involved know, and can take pride in a job well done. e) Medicines Distribution Like the Procurement section, the Distribution section is something of a “Cinderella” section but absolutely crucial to the functioning of the department and the well being of the patient: if you haven’t got the stock it doesn’t much matter what anyone else does! Distribution staff have a key role in maintaining stock and processing requisitions in order to ensure continuity of supply to wards, departments, clinics, GPs, community nurses etc. The Raigmore Pharmacy distributes medicines and other pharmaceuticals to hospitals and healthcare staff across an area the size of Wales. Transport links are often poor and this presents staff with considerable challenges. Support staff also provide a “top-up” service of stock items to wards and departments in Raigmore. The importance of the role of support staff is now being properly recognised by the profession and the GPhC requires that all staff processing orders should be accredited with the Society. f) Dispensing Most discharge prescriptions at Raigmore are now computer generated. This aids legibility and speed of processing and allows GPs to receive a note of the discharge medication before the patient has left the hospital. The role of the pharmacist is to provide a clinical check providing an assurance of the appropriateness of the prescription. Pharmaceutical Care Issues identified are recorded and fed into a database for analysis and follow-up. Pharmacy Technicians process the prescriptions prior to accuracy check by a pharmacist or a suitably qualified checking technician. Errors are recorded and fed into a database for analysis and follow up. Outpatients are offered counseling about their medicines and a private counseling room is available for use if required. g) Quality Assurance (QA) Current provision is concentrated on traditional QA functions such as environmental monitoring, assessment of goods returned from wards, handling of defective and potentially defective products, and testing of medical gas pipeline systems. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) from all sections are now authorised by QA. At a national level, there is input to strategy and policies through the Scottish Pharmacy Quality Assurance Group (SPQAG).





It is planned to extend QA services to other pharmacy departments in Highland and in support of medicines management and clinical pharmacy services at ward level. This extension of QA activity will enable audit of all sections within all departments. h) Information Technology (eHealth) Experience has shown that it is essential to have computer literate pharmacists involved in developing and maintaining IT systems used in pharmacy. This is another essential “behind the scenes” activity. Main activities at present include management both of the pharmacy computer system across NHS Highland, and the electronic Immediate Discharge Letter (IDL) system drug dictionary, as well as managing user accounts for all pharmacy staff. Medicines usage data is also provided and is being further developed. In the future, information on pharmaceutical services will be developed for use on the intranet. Also, in conjunction with wider developments within the organisation, it is intended that progress will be made towards the development of a full electronic prescribing and patient record administration system. About Help and Support Raigmore Hospital Pharmacy is a friendly place to work and help is always at hand. Jim Bannerman is the overall pre-registration manager and a former tutor. Jim will co-ordinate the year’s training, and your tutor will guide you through the requirements of the GPhC training programme and offer general guidance and support. They are ably supported by experienced and enthusiastic pharmacists, technicians and others who provide the key roles as trainers in the different areas of activities. Usually, there will also be junior pharmacists who have recently completed the pre-registration year and who are only too willing to offer support and advice, or act as mentors. On a wider level, Raigmore acts as the base for a Research Institute, has academic links with schools of pharmacy and participates in the training both of medical and nursing students. There is a Centre for Health Science on site, which includes an excellent Health Services Library and clinical skills centre. There is local support for research and development through the Research & Development Office. The Research & Development Manager and staff organise training courses and provide some funding and general support for researchers. It can therefore be seen that Raigmore offers an environment where learning is encouraged and where those learning are supported. Each of the three hospitals has its own pharmacy department operating from modern facilities. Hairmyres and Monklands hospitals each have a central pharmacy department that accommodates the dispensary, aseptic unit, medicines information, procurement and clinical offices. The pharmacy service within Wishaw General is provided from a network of nine pharmacy workstations and two aseptic areas located over the two floors of the hospital. Wishaw General and Hairmyres Hospital use the patients’ own drugs (POD) scheme during their inpatient stay and on discharge. This scheme involves pharmacists and technicians working together in teams on wards to document accurate drug histories on admission, ensure the quality of patients’ own drugs brought into hospital, reduce waiting times on discharge and educate patients about their medicines. This scheme is due to be implemented at Monklands Hospital in 2011. Pharmacy staff across the three sites work closely together and there are a number of posts which carry area-wide responsibilities. Many of the pharmacists working within the three sites have clinical responsibilities, many of which are within specialist areas. During the pre-registration year, education and training is given a high priority and pre-registration trainee pharmacists rotate through a structured programme to gain experience in all aspects of pharmaceutical care including clinical pharmacy, medicines information, dispensing, aseptic dispensing and procurement. Each pre-registration pharmacist will be assigned an experienced senior pharmacist as a tutor who will meet with them regularly throughout the pre-registration year to support progress. There will be opportunities to gain experience in specialties including emergency receiving, haematology, oncology, neonates, paediatrics, cardiology, respiratory, mental health, infectious diseases, renal medicine and intensive care. A one month secondment to a community pharmacy is provided.

In addition to on site support, our pre-registration trainee pharmacists participate in the West of Scotland Pre-registration study days. Pre-registration trainee pharmacists will also undertake and present a project and time will be provided in which to study for the pre-registration exam and undertake and complete the relevant aspects of the core learning programme.


Hairmyres, Wishaw General and Monklands Hospitals all provide vocational employment for undergraduates during the summer months as part of the Scottish Hospital Pharmacists Vacational Training Scheme. This involves a three week placement providing a variety of training in the dispensary, medicines information, aseptic unit and clinical pharmacy as well as completion of a small audit. The Board also welcomes any students who wish to visit any of the hospitals to discuss pre-registration training opportunities. ORGANISATIONAL BACKGROUND

Lanarkshire is approximately halfway between Glasgow and Edinburgh. All acute hospital sites are served by rail links to Glasgow city centre and are within 30 miles of Glasgow Airport. NHS Lanarkshire consists of three hospitals:

Hairmyres Hospital, East Kilbride (492 beds) Hairmyres Hospital offers a full range of inpatient, outpatient, diagnostic and clinical support services and is also home to Lanarkshire’s only Cardiac Catheterisation Centre consisting of two new, state of the art catheterisation laboratories for diagnosis and treatment of blood vessel blockages around the heart. Monklands Hospital, Airdrie (535 beds) Monklands Hospital has a £3.7m renal unit providing an unprecedented level of care for Lanarkshire’s renal patients and also houses Lanarkshire’s centralised services for inpatient ENT, dermatology, haematology, blood borne viruses, HIV and infectious diseases. Wishaw General Hospital, Wishaw (626 beds) Wishaw General Hospital includes the third largest maternity unit in Scotland, a paediatric and neonatal unit and an Emergency Care Unit containing an integrated Accident and Emergency Unit with a 36 bed ward.

The pharmacy team in NHS Lanarkshire is fully committed to the Scottish Patient Safety Programme focusing on how to change our practice to improve patient safety. All three pharmacy departments have been involved in the LEAN process which improves work flow allowing departments to work more efficiently. A number of staff in our pharmacy team including pre-registration trainee pharmacists have had their research / audit work published in journals or presented at both national and international conferences. The pharmacy team has also won awards through the United Kingdom Clinical Pharmacy Association in Education and Training, Pain and Leadership.

There will be six pre-registration trainee pharmacist posts available, two in each hospital and these posts will have placements in the three hospitals to obtain a wide breadth of experience. Each hospital has been involved in the training of pre-registration trainee pharmacists for a number of years.

GENERAL COMMENTS The pharmacy service within NHS Lanarkshire is fully committed to the further education and training of all pharmacy staff. Junior pharmacists are encouraged and supported to undertake the Scottish Hospital Pharmacists’ Vocational Training Scheme. Once this is successfully completed staff are encouraged to study for an MSc in Clinical Pharmacy. We currently have a number of staff working towards these qualifications. We also have a number of pharmacists who have completed the independent prescribing qualification. There are also weekly pharmacist peer review meetings and we are actively involved in multidisciplinary education. NHS Lanarkshire Acute Hospital Pharmacies will fully comply with the requirements of the Educational Agreement with NES Pharmacy.

Voluntary summer placements (2-4 weeks) are available in NHS Lothian at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Western General Hospital, St Johns Hospital, Royal Edinburgh Hospital and Royal Hospital for Sick Children. The number of placements is reviewed on an annual basis. Students registered at Strathclyde or Robert Gordon Universities are advised of the recruitment process through their websites. Students from other Universities should contact Caroline Souter, Principal Pharmacist, NHS Lothian Education, Research and Development (ERD) for further information. NHS Lothian hospitals, when possible, try to accommodate student visitors to be shown around one of the departments to gain an awareness of work within a hospital pharmacy service. The NHS Lothian Pharmacy Service is managed as a single system within which primary and secondary care services are integrated and aspire to meet patients’ pharmaceutical needs as they move across care settings. The service serves a population of approximately 800,000 people living in Edinburgh and the Lothian region. Users of the service have influenced the recently developed Pharmacy Strategy which details a delivery plan for Pharmacy services over the next few years. Many specialist clinical services are delivered from Lothian hospitals. For example, the Western General Hospital, an 800 bedded hospital hosts the Regional Cancer Centre, Infectious Diseases and Clinical Neurosciences Units. The Royal Infirmary which has in excess of 900 in-patient beds hosts the Scottish Liver Transplant Centre and other specialist services such as maternity, accident & emergency, cardiac surgery, renal unit and orthopaedic surgery. St Johns hospital hosts the burns and plastic surgery unit and there is a separate Royal Hospital for Sick Children. All acute sites provide general clinical services. The Regional Medicines Information Centre which hosts the Scottish yellow card centre for reporting adverse drug reactions is located in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. Hospitals within the primary care division include mental health, care of the elderly and rehabilitation services. The Pharmacy service is delivered by over 300 members of staff illustrated by a complex organisational structure. There is a structured approach to personal and workforce development to ensure Pharmacy services continue to meet developing patient needs. Formal links with academic institutions and with NHS Education for Scotland facilitates a partnership approach to the development and delivery of formal education and training for Pharmacists and Pharmacy support staff. Provision of pre-registration training has been delivered in NHS Lothian hospitals for a number of decades and is a priority in terms of staff development. Pre-registration trainees are based at one of three main hospital sites (see below) and follow an extensive rotational programme which takes them to other sites to experience specialist services such as paediatrics, mental health and primary care. There is some flexibility within the programme to provide trainees with the opportunity to learn about specialist services offered from any of the sites. Team-working among the group of 7 trainees is encouraged through project work and small group training events.

which includes induction, manual handling, healthcare associated infection, health & safety, equality & diversity, food hygiene, adult & child protection, information governance and management of aggression. To compliment cross sector training and regional training events, the NHS Lothian Pharmacy service provides an additional programme of direct learning events which includes an initial clinical induction course followed by regular study days throughout the year. There may also be opportunities for pre-reg trainees to attend study days delivered by other training providers if appropriate to their learning needs. However the focus is on experiential learning in the workplace as a sound basis for continuing professional development following the pre-registration year. Each trainee has a tutor at their base site who monitors their progress and facilitates their professional development. Trainers within each department support trainees through provision of training plans and feedback on performance. Tayside Hospitals Pre-registration training year has been designed both to fulfil the registration requirements of the General Pharmaceutical Council and to provide a comprehensive introduction to hospital pharmacy. A modular approach is applied to training with each pre-registration pharmacist rotating through 6 placements of approximately 2 months duration, specific modules being under the supervision of specialist trainers. Each pre-registration trainee is allocated an experienced senior pharmacist as their tutor throughout their training. Tutors meet weekly with their trainee to monitor progress throughout the year and provide assistance in resolving any problems, which may arise. Further details of the Tayside Pre-registration programme are provided in the Tayside Pre-registration Pharmacist Training Manual, which is available on request.


NHS Tayside participates in the Scottish hospital vacational programme offering four-week summer placements to students who apply through the NES supported scheme. Visits to the department(s) can be arranged by contacting the service as described below.


NHS Tayside Acute Hospitals include Ninewells Teaching Hospital and the Dental Hospital in Dundee; Perth Royal Infirmary and Stracathro Hospital (Angus). The Division has a total of over 1000 beds covering a wide range of acute specialities including General Medicine, General and Specialist Surgery, Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Neurosciences, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Paediatrics and Orthopaedics.

The main centre of the Organisation is the 870 bedded Ninewells Teaching Hospital situated on the outskirts of the City of Dundee. Ninewells provides a comprehensive range of acute health care services to the population of Dundee and Northeast Fife and a range of specialist services to patients referred for treatment from Tayside and other areas. Perth Royal Infirmary (PRI), with 200 beds, provides medical, surgical, orthopaedic, gynaecology and care of the elderly inpatient services. Principal Clinical Pharmacists lead the provision of pharmacy services to each clinical specialty supported by Senior Specialist Clinical Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Pharmacists are well integrated with the clinical teams and are involved with the provision of education and training for medical students, junior medical staff and other health care professionals. Twelve rotational junior pharmacists receive training in these sections and support the work of the Senior Pharmacists. Dispensary services are provided from four main sites - Ninewells, Perth, Stracathro and Carseview led by Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians, supported by teams of pharmacy technicians, rotational pharmacists and support staff. The Medicines Information Centre is integrated with, and provides day-to-day support to the Clinical Pharmacy team. The service is widely used by doctors and pharmacists in hospitals and primary care throughout Tayside.

GENERAL COMMENTS NHS Tayside are committed to providing training for Pre registration trainee pharmacists and will comply with the requirements of the Educational Agreement. Junior Pharmacists (Band 6) gain experience on a training rotation of several placements under the supervision of Principal and Senior Pharmacists. In addition, each trainee is allocated a tutor to supervise progress through the Scottish hospital pharmacists Stage II vocational training scheme. Training is provided in the clinical specialties of Medicine and Surgery, as well as dispensing, aseptic dispensing and medicines information. Within the senior rotational programme, pharmacists gain experience and assist Principal/Senior Pharmacists in the planning/delivery of clinical services and patient services. Clinical pharmacy rotations within Ninewells include the specialties of General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, Critical Care, Oncology and Specialist Services. We are fully committed to training and staff development, with many members of staff currently undertaking post-qualification courses including Diploma/MSc in Clinical Pharmacy, Prescribing Sciences, Independent Prescribing and HNC in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Less formal study is also undertaken and we are involved in multi-disciplinary training. We are actively involved in practice research and audit in all sections of the pharmacy. Accommodation is generally available and staff facilities include a swimming pool, squash courts and a crèche. A benefits package is also available for all staff.
