C ent ans après les premiers coups de feu de lapremière révolution sociale et culturelle du 20èmesiècle, ce film propose un voyage historique entre mythes etréalités. En partant sur la piste du révolutionnaire mexicainPancho Villa, il suit les empreintes qui ont forgé l’identitémexicaine d’aujourd’hui. Ce documentaire est uneréférence, grâce aux nombreuses photos et documentssélectionnés, mais surtout aux rares images animées dePancho Villa qu’il contient. A l’heure où le Mexique s’apprêteà fêter le centenaire de sa révolution, ce film est letémoignage d’une révolution qui inspira des générationsd’aventuriers et de romanciers…

R éalisé en extérieurs au Nord du Mexique et aux USA,ce film raconte l’histoire de ce personnage mythique,héros de cinéma, de bandes dessinées et de chansonspopulaires. Sous forme d’un road-movie - à cheval, en train,à moto et en voiture - le film emprunte les chemins dupaysan inculte, devenu gouverneur, du bandit sanguinairedevenu « Robin des bois » romantique, du hors-la-loidésormais idole des pauvres, qui fonda 50 écoles en unmois sans son état du Chihuahua. Devenu général d’unearmée de 30.000 hommes, il échappa à 150 attentats etinventa la « guerre moderne » en combinant l’artillerie, lacavalerie, mais aussi les trains et l’aviation naissante etréussit à échapper aux troupes américaines du généralPershing, lancées à sa poursuite.

P ancho Villa et Emiliano Zapata, son fidèle ami du Sud,ont été les deux instigateurs et les deux héros de larévolution mexicaine de 1910. Ils ont connu la même fintragique, dans des embuscades probablement organiséespar les forces gouvernementales.

M aria Guadalupe Villa, dernière fille en vie durévolutionnaire, nous offre un témoignage rare ennous livrant ses souvenirs. Paco Ignacio Taibo II, célèbreécrivain mexicain, auteur d’une biographie majeure surPancho Villa, ponctue le film de ses analyses et offre unevision humaine et militante du personnage.

At a time where Mexico is preparing the centennialcelebrations of its revolution, this film is the account of arevolution that inspired generations of adventurers andauthors..

F ilmed on location in Northern Mexico and in the UnitedStates, this film tells the story of this mythical character,hero of movies, cartoons and popular songs. In the style ofa road-movie – on horseback, by train, on motorcycle and bycar – the film follows the paths of this uneducated peasant,who later became governor, of the bloody bandit whobecame the romantic « Robin Hood », of the outlaw whonow is the idol of the poor, and built 50 schools within amonth in his home-state, Chihuahua. Later as general at thehead of a 30.000-men army, he escaped 150 assassinationattempts and invented the « modern war » by combining theartillery, cavalry, but also trains and the burgeoning aviationindustry, and managed to escape the American troops ofGeneral Pershing that were after him.

P ancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata, his loyal friend of theSouth, were the two instigators and the two heroes ofthe 1910 Mexican Revolution. They both met the sametragic death in ambushes probably set up by thegovernmental forces.

M aria Guadalupe Villa, the last living daughter of therevolutionary, offers a rare testimony by revealingpersonal memories. Paco Ignacio Taibo II, the famousMexican writer, author of a major biography on Pancho Villa,sprinkles the film with various views and offers a human andactivist portrait of the character.

A blend between modern era western movies andhistorical documentary, this film draws the viewer intoan epic journey, into battles and among grandioselandscapes, to the sound of the harmonica and of the hoofsof galloping horses, and brings back an era marked by thevery first war reporters and motion picture pioneers, in abrutal and photogenic Mexican revolution…
