Early Life• I was born on
September 30th, 1631.
• My parents are Israel and Elizabeth Stoughton.
• My family was part of the early settlers in Dorchester, Mass.
Religion I was very interested in the church
from a young age. I was a very religious man and strict
Puritan.
Education I graduated from
Harvard College in 1650 at age 19.
I received a degree in Theology.
Then I went on to continue my studies at New College, Oxford and graduated in 1653.
Career I originally wanted
to pursue a career as a preacher and was offered a job as the Church Pastor.
Once the accusations of witchcraft began I was appointed to Chief Justice of the Court.
Witch Trails I was the Chief Justice of the Court during the
Salem Witch Trials. I was especially harsh during the trials and
allowed spectral evidence to be used in the trials.
I signed many existing death warrants during the trials.
Life After the Trials After the trials ended I was appointed
to Governor. I never apologized for my part in the
Salem Witch Trials I died on July 7th, 1701
